        Profiles In Courage.

Harper & Brothers, New York 1956 - First edition. Octavo, original half black cloth. Inscribed by the author to Massachusetts Senator Leverett Saltonstall, "To Senator Saltonstall- with the very highest regards of his colleague John Kennedy." Leverett Saltonstall was the senior senator of Massachusetts while, John Kennedy was the junior senator. An excellent copy in a bright near fine dust jacket. Saltonstall served as Republican Whip from 1949-1957 and as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1953-1955. Saltonstall attended the wedding of John Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953, and the two served together in the Senate from 1953 to 1960. Saltanstall and Kennedy worked together closely over the course of several years, as evidenced of one of their constituents thought the two had an even closer relationship, mistakenly assuming Saltonstall to be Kennedy's uncle. "If you are ready to admit it," Kennedy kidded in a 1963 letter, "I am." An excellent association copy. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."         1) Three models for the description of language. (2) The zero error capacity of a noisy channel. (3) The logic theory machine.

1956 - (1) Chomsky, Noam (1928- ). Three models for the description of language. In IRE Transactions on Information Theory IT-2 (September 1956): 113-24. (2) Shannon, Claude E. The zero error capacity of a noisy channel. In IRE Transactions on Information Theory IT-2 (September 1956): 8-19. (3) Newell, Allen & H. A. Simon. The logic theory machine. In IRE Transactions on Information Theory IT-2 (September 1956): 61-79. Whole number. Original green printed wrappers. 278 x 218 mm. (1) First edition. Chomsky's revolutionary investigations of the underlying structures of natural languages were first presented in the above paper, read at a symposium on information theory held at MIT a few months before the publication of his Syntactic Structures . In the paper Chomsky introduced two key concepts, the first being "Chomsky's hierarchy" of syntactic forms, which has been widely applied in the construction of artificial computer languages. "The Chomsky hierarchy places regular (or linear) languages as a subset of the context-free languages, which in turn are embedded within the set of context-sensitive languages also finally residing in the set of unrestricted or recursively enumerable languages. By defining syntax as the set of rules that define the spatial relationships between the symbols of a language, various levels of language can be also described as one-dimensional (regular or linear), two-dimensional (context-free), three-dimensional (context sensitive) and multi-dimensional (unrestricted) relationships. From these beginnings, Chomsky might well be described as the 'father of formal languages'" (Lee 1995, 164).The second concept presented here is Chomsky's transformational-generative grammar theory, which attempts to define rules that can generate the infinite number of grammatical (well-formed) sentences possible in a language, and seeks to identify rules (transformations) that govern relations between parts of a sentence, on the assumption that beneath such aspects as word order a fundamental deep structure exists. As Chomsky expressed it in his abstract of the present paper,"We investigate several conceptions of linguistic structure to determine whether or not they can provide simple and "revealing" grammars that generate all of the sentences of English and only these. We find that no finite-state Markov process [a random process whose future probabilities are determined by its most recent values] that produces symbols with transition from state to state can serve as an English grammar. We formalize the notion of "phrase structure" and show that this gives us a method for describing language which is essentially more powerful. We study the properties of a set of grammatical transformations, showing that the grammar of English is materially simplified if phrase-structure is limited to a kernel of simple sentences from which all other sentences are constructed by repeated transformation, and that this view of linguistic structure gives a certain insight into the use and understanding of language" (p. 113). Minsky 1963, 484. Origins of Cyberspace 531. (2) First Edition. "The zero error capacity C0 of a noisy channel is defined to be the least upper bound of rates at which it is possible to transmit information with zero probability of error. Various properties of C0 are studied; upper and lower bounds and methods of evaluation of C0 are given. Inequalities are obtained for the C0 relating to the 'sum' and 'product' of two given channels. The analogous problem of zero error capacity C0F for a channel with a feedback link is considered. It is shown that while the ordinary capacity of a memoryless channel with feedback is equal to that of the same channel without feedback, the zero error capacity may be greater. A solution is given to the problem of evaluating C0F" (p. 8). Shannon 1993, no. 109. Origins of Cyberspace 890.(3) Newell and Simon's logic theory machine (LT), first described in this paper, is a computer program that discovers [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Hits, Runs and Social Errors. Choice Cartoons from Sports Illustrated

New York: Random House,, 1956. Selected by Charles Preston, Tall quarto. Original pictorial boards. With the dust jacket. Illustrations throughout. Boards slightly rubbed and dulled, lower corner bumped, light uneven tanning to front free endpapers from inserted material. A very good copy in the rubbed and creased jacket with a small chip from the head of the spine panel. First edition, first impression. From the library of Laurence Olivier, inscribed to him by Elizabeth Taylor on the front free endpaper, "Dear Sir Laurence, Thank you for always being so kind. Love, Elizabeth. Sept 14, 1960". Olivier had been good friends with Richard Burton for some years, and it was Burton who hosted the party at which Olivier's marriage to Joan Plowright (which had taken place quietly earlier the same day) was announced. Olivier may have encountered Taylor in 1953, when she replaced Vivien Leigh in Elephant Walk, but they did not become close until after Taylor's marriage to Burton in 1964. In September 1960 the filming of Cleopatra was still taking place in London, and it is possible that Olivier had offered advice on the roles, having previously played the leads in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra and Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra.

Autograph Letter Signed on personal 4to letterhead with the town of "Corona" California crossed out and replaced with "Box 266 Monrovia," January 3, 1957

. To Mr. Greenfield regarding "J.L." and Sinclair's book "The Cup of Fury." J.L. refers to Jack London, one of the writers Sinclair discusses in his book. Regarding "J.L.," "To the public he is a romantic figure & has to be that to sell the book. But to me he is an alcoholic tragedy. I have made him a leading figure in 'The Cup of Fury'...." Sinclair discusses the book, saying, "A score of NY publishers said it wouldn't sell & I had to go to a church group. They have sold 65000 copies... I send you my 'Didymus' of which also US publishers are afraid. It has been published with success in London, Paris...." He signs, "U. Sinclair." "The Cup of Fury" was published in 1956; it is an attack on alcohol, the tragic stories of talented American writers whose drinking destroyed them and caused grief to others, people like Jack London, O. Henry, Sinclair Lewis, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Dylan Thomas. Sinclair also refers to another book, "Didymus." He is talking about the book "What Didymus Did," published in the UK in 1954, which would, in 1958, be published in the US as "It Happened to Didymus." In 1919, he published the muckraking exposé about "yellow" journalism, "The Brass Check," revealing the limitations of the "free press" in the United States. Four years later, the first code of ethics for journalists was created. Sinclair also ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Socialist, and was the Democratic Party nominee for Governor of California in 1934.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell and Company Ltd.,, 1956–8. 4 volumes, octavo (240 × 155 mm). Contemporary binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in red half morocco, spines gilt in compartments, red cloth sides ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. All volumes illustrated with maps and genealogical tables. Spines a little faded, board edges somewhat worn, some spotting to the cloth and foxing to the edges. Cloth worn in patches to Vol IV, with a small dent to the spine. Overall a good set in an attractive binding. First editions, first impressions. An attractively bound set. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations – the British Empire and the United States – was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship": "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently, he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history. Around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

        The Sweet Science

New York: The Viking Press,, 1956. Octavo. Original fawn cloth-backed black boards, title in black to the spine, impressed boxing ring device in red to the upper board, red top-stain. With the dust jacket. A little used, worn at the corners, minor splitting at the tail of the spine, top-stain faded but present, front hinge just starting after the front free endpaper, light toning, the jacket rubbed, sunned, with some splitting and chipping, damp-stain at the fore-corner of the upper panel onto the turn-in, remains very good. First edition, first impression. This copy superbly inscribed on the front free endpaper; "July 18, 1960 - Happy Birthday - Pap - This is partly because of the many times you took me to the Ridgewood Grove on Saturday nigths to watch the fights many years ago - Joe." A collection of Liebling's pieces for The New Yorker which in 2002 was hailed by Sports Illustrated as the No.1 Sports Book of all time; "Pound-for-pound the top boxing writer of all time, Liebling is at his bare-knuckled best here, bobbing and weaving between superb reporting and evocative prose. The fistic figures depicted in this timeless collection of New Yorker essays range from champs such as Rocky Marciano and Sugar Ray Robinson to endearing palookas and eccentric cornermen on the fringes of the squared circle. Liebling's writing is efficient yet stylish, acerbic yet soft and sympathetic … He leavens these flourishes with an eye for detail worthy of Henry James. The one-two combination allows him to convey how boxing can at once be so repugnant and so alluring" (Sports Illustrated, Dec. 2002). The 4,000-seater Ridgewood Grove Arena in Brooklyn was one of the great, old-school fight clubs of New York. Decidedly uncommon inscribed.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Here is a premium, collector-worthy British first edition set of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The first British edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall red volumes and striking, illustrated dust jackets. Churchill seems to have taken an active and detailed interest in the aesthetics of the publication. He told his doctor: "it is not necessary to break the back of the book to keep it open. I made them take away a quarter of an inch from the outer margins of the two pages and then add the half-inch so gained to the inner margin." He was clearly satisfied with the result, remarking with pardonable exuberance "It opens like an angel's wings." (Gilbert, Volume VIII, p.1184) Unfortunately, as beautiful as the first editions are, they proved somewhat fragile. The dust jackets commonly suffer significant fading, wear, soiling, and spotting, and the books typically bear spotting and fading of the red-stained top edges. This set is a notable exception - a full set of exceptionally clean, fine volumes in fine dust jackets, with terrific shelf presentation. All four volumes are first edition, first printing in correct, unclipped first printing dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are flawlessly clean and square with sharp corners, vivid color, and bright spine gilt. The contents remain crisp, bright, and tight. We note absolutely no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The sole trivial flaw is a hint of sunning to the top edges, which still retain strong color. The dust jackets are likewise noteworthy examples - unclipped and bright with no losses or tears. We note none of the usual spine sunning and only the slightest incidental soiling and trivial wear at a few spine ends. We see many first edition sets, but few thus. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A267.1(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A138(aa), Langworth p.315.

London Educational Book Company 1956 - 4 volumes. First Edition and the First Complete Illustrated Edition and the First Chartwell Edition. With a profusion of maps and illustrations throughout. 8vo, publisher’s original blue buckram lettered and decorated in gilt on the spines and covers, red morocco lettering labels gilt. xviii, 431; 355; 340; 329. Index to each volume. A fine set. As pristine and in very pleasing condition with only very light evidence of age. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. This Chartwell edition was the first illustrated edition, issued by subscription only. It includes a profusion of illustrations, maps, and genealogical tables. By the beginning of World War II, Churchill had already penned half a million words of this manuscript. Lying dormant through almost six years of war followed by an even longer period in which Churchill wrote his war memoirs, this work finally was brought to fruition in 1956. The first two volumes of this set were published in April and November 1956 respectively, the third in October 1957, and the last in March 1958. Whereas the first two volumes sold briskly, the final two were less successful and were not reprinted for years. Sir Winston Churchill ranks among the greatest men of history. He was born in 1874, a descendent of the great Duke of Marlborough. After an education at Harrow and Sandhurst he entered the army in 1895 and embarked on one of the most varied and distinguished careers of the century. He acted as a correspondent for the Morning Post during the Boer War and his dramatic escape from prison in Pretoria brought him to public attention. He embarked on his political career in 1900 by entering Parliament. While there he held many major offices of state: Home Secretary, Secretary of State for War, First Lord of the Admiralty in which he oversaw naval operations for the First World War, Colonial Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and eventually in 1940, Prime Minister. The latter office he would hold throughout World War Two and again from 1951 to 1955. He was a prolific writer, always submerged in simultaneous multi-facted projects. He finished both A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES and his other great multi-volume work THE SECOND WORLD WAR during the same period as he was perfecting his style of painting and writing PAINTING AS A PASTIME. His death in 1965 sent the whole world into mourning and his funeral was on of the most moving public events of the century. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
