        Watercolor drawing of Madeline

1956 - Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 11 by 8 1/2 inches (28x22cm). Matted and framed. Signed by Bemelmans. This shoulder-length portrait of Bemelmans's most enduring character is done in the later, bold style encountered in Madeline and the Bad Hat, and it shows red-headed Madeline wearing her characteristic wide-brimmed hat trimmed with a blue ribbon and high-collared shirt with a blue neckpiece. Although Bemelmans was quite prolific, original drawings of Madeline seldom appear on the market. Slight mat burn, else fine in a lightly worn wood frame, painted pink to complement the color of Madeline's rosy cheeks. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A History of the English Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell and Co., 1956-58.. FIRST EDITIONS. 4 volumes, octavo. Elegantly bound in contemporary three quarters mid blue calf for Sotheran's (likely by Morell Bookbinders, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, twin title labels, gilt decoration, pale blue buckram sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Internally clean. Some rubbing/wear to joints otherwise fine. A most attractive vintage leather binding. Uncommon Published shortly after Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, this is the author's last great work, only available some twenty years after he wrote the first draft, which then lay dormant whilst he attended to National and Parliamentary matters. In his preface he remarks that the book 'slumbered peacefully, until 1956, 'when things had quietened down'. Reading reports of the last decade of his life, one is struck by the central interest his history represented in his final years, and how rapidly he sank into decline and depression after the final volume was published.

        Three Calendars

Two Serizawa kataezome calendar folios, for the years 1956 and 1962, together with a third similar Serizawa-style calendar folio for 1967, each calendar with a separate sheet for each month, produced using the traditional Japanese kataezome technique of stamping stencils on handmade untrimmed Japanese mulberry paper. Folio. Cardstock portfolio, contents loose as issued. N.p. 1956-1967. Keisuke Serizawa was a master of the art of stencil dyeing and a leader of the Japanese Mingei (folk art and craft) movement. He combined two textile dyeing techniques, the bingata of Okinawa (traditional resist-dyeing) and the Japanese ise-katagami (paper stencils) to create his own kataezome stencil dyeing process. He used this process to dye kimono fabrics, screens, wall hangings, fans, scrolls, calendars, and quilts, produced illustrated books, and painted on paper, wood, ceramic, and glass. He also helped to design the Kurashiki Ohara Art Museum. In 1956, he became one of the first living artists given the honorific designation "Living National Art Treasure" by the Japanese government, which provided him with a small stipend to train apprentices to continue with his craft. As of June 2016, WorldCat does not show any listings for calendars from these years.

Nuclear Warfare Survivability & Post-Attack Reorganization

1956 - Rare Document on Post-Attack Assessment.* Carbon-paper copy of "Organization and Staffing Damage Assessment Division Production Area", August, 1956. 8x10. 25pp. Printed on thin, onion-skin like paper. Contents Very Fine; original manila folder wrappers in Fine condition. Yes. Well. All things being equal, such things as an Afterlife in the United States needed to be contemplated because that is what we do--we make the situation possible for end-of-the-world stuff to happen, and so we have to plan for building things up again with radioactive detritus once all of the keys get turned and buttons pushed, as it is just a natural course of that historical river. That the bomb would be built was a given; that the Soviets would develop the a bomb and delivery capacities was just a matter of time, and that they would be our sworn death-enemies was also a fait accompli. To develop a way to somehow survive a nuclear war may have been a major deterrent to not launching an attack, especially when linked with a Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) arms build up (where everyone and everything would be obliterated if there was a nuclear war, or at least so by 1965 (and probably earlier than that). All this insane stuff may have worked, and somehow we managed not to ignite the world, because (to paraphrase Frank Zappa) there would be no real estate left. On the other hand, building all of these weapon systems and planning for attack and the post attack world could have pushed us into a final confrontation, making all of this sound "winable", "doable" somehow, that once the bombs had all exploded and nothing worked anymore, that there would be enough to pull together of our civilization to declare that we had indeed "won'". And the only way to declare a winner was to have something to stand on besides pieces of green glass and Earth, and so plans for communications and a military, police force, fire brigades, medical care, food distribution, banking, and all the rest--the pieces of a recognizable backbone of American society--would have to be undertaken. All of this could very well accomplish the creation of an illusion in the mind of the adversary that you are capable of surviving a nuclear war, and so there would be no great gain in attacking; or it could send the message that by doing this preparation that you were preparing a first strike scenario, and so the adversary would attack while the odds were still not horribly out of balance. And on and--it all looks like a lose-lose endgame to me, which is hardly a "game" at all when all players are losers. But still there was a need to staff the thousands of positions that went into the theoretical end of figuring out the non-weapon-end world after nuclear war, and the above "position description" is an example of that, a necessarily pro forma form, just another job in a ea of jobs. This one's job descriptions read like any other, except of course that the content was much different. Form the same, sentence structure the same, vocabulary basically invariable. This position description was for "Chief, Damage Assessment Division", was was the part of the Office of Emergency Preparedness (which operated under the auspices of the Executive Office of the President, and then under the Office of Defense Mobilization (ODM), and then under the Production Area, and then, finally, the Damage Assessment Division DMA). The job of the DMA was to identify what would happen to the essential production facilities that would keep the country going--industrial, technical, medical, biological, and so on--how they would be targeted, and how they might survive an attack. This also applied to the people who would be required to be in charge of all of this. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Grimms' Other Tales, A New Selection by Wilhelm Hansen: Translated & Edited by Ruth Michaelis-Jena and Arthur Ratcliff: Illustrated With Ten Wood-Engravings by Gwenda Morgan (with Prospectus)

The Golden Cockerel Press, [London] 1956 - ONE OF 75 COPIES BOUND IN MOROCCO out of a total edition of 500, this copy SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR, AND WITH ORIGINAL PROSPECTUS. Per the book's prospectus: "Among treasures sent out of Berlin for safety during the war were the notebooks of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Among the manuscripts are a large number of the fairy-tales collected with tireless enthusiasm by the brothers, and for various reasons a considerable proportion of these are not available to the general reader and [are] virtually unknown. Already in 1823, when Taylor made the first English translation, it was realized that a further selection should be published in English, to contain excluded stories which Taylor described as 'most curious' and 'of great merit'. He had felt bound to suppress them, he wrote, 'in deference to the scrupulous fastidiousness of modern taste, especially in works likely to attract the attention of youth'. The fifty tales now printed in the Golden Cockerel selection are the cream of what we have called the Grimms' 'Other Tales', since none was included in their definitive German edition, nor in Taylor's classic English translation". ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full purple morocco, gilt vignette on front board of a giant, gilt vignette on the back board of a village with a castle on a hilltop in the distance, top edge gilt, wood-engravings by Gwenda Morgan (N.B., the prospectus and bibliography both state that there are eleven wood-engravings, the title page of the book states ten; we count nine full-page engravings, the publisher's device on the title page, and a headpiece that opens the first tale); printed in Poliphilus type on mould-made paper, octavo size (just over 9.25" tall), pagination: (1)-160; limited edition of 500 copies overall, this no. 35 of the 75 specially bound in purple morocco, signed by the illustrator in blue ink on the colophon page. The prospectus mirrors the title page on the front page, page two has one of the full-page wood engravings, page three the opening of one of the tales with the decorative headpiece, page four tells about the book - the original cost for this book, bound in morocco, was $32.50. ***CONDITION: Near fine overall, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some sunning to the spine to a mellow brown colour, some sunning also to the board edges, one extremely small area of light wear to the upper back corner, vintage bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown, else fine. The prospectus is near fine with some toning to the edges and very light overall edgewear. ***CITATION: Cock-A-Hoop 205. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Nuit et brouillard [Night and Fog] (Original French moyenne poster for the 1955 short film)

Paris: Argos Films, 1956. Original French moyenne poster (affiche) for the 1955 film, printed for use as part of a program with other films during its initial release. Winner of the 1956 Prix Jean Vigo and Grand prix du cinéma française. Rare, with no copies found in OCLC or Ciné-ressources. Set to premiere as part of the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, Alain Resnais' starkly unsentimental masterpiece of documentary filmmaking caused waves immediately. After robust journalistic criticism and threats of mass protest, and following a nearly successful attempt by the German embassy to bar the film from screening, festival organizers decided to screen the film out of competition, where it received high critical praise before going on to receive two of France's most prestigious cinematic prizes. Alain Resnais relied on original footage shot by Ghislain Cloquet and Sacha Vierny, with whom Resnais would continue to work throughout his career, as well as archival news and documentary reels and the unflinching commentary of author, poet, and sometimes filmmaker Jean Cayrol, who was imprisoned in the Gusen Concentration Camp in 1943, for a uniquely devastating look at the human toll of war. Shot on location in Auschwitz and Majdanek. 23.5 x 31.5 inches (60 x 80 cm), printed in red, blue, and dark blue, folded as issued. Very Good plus with bottom right corner repaired with scotch tape on verso, very minor fold separation at center, and holograph notations to verso. A very presentable overall appearance for an unrestored and rare ephemeral piece for one of the most important documentaries ever made. Criterion Collection 197.
