        de Stijl 1917-1931

London: Alec Teranti, Ltd, 1956. 8vo (9¼ x 7 inches). viii, 293 pp. Four color plates showing designs by Mondrian, Rietveld, Van der Leck, and Van Doesburg and Van Eesteren; and 48 black-and-white plates at end on 24 sheets. Original cloth. Light age-toning to sheet edges; minor handling wear to binding. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY GIVEN BY HANS SCHLEGER TO PAUL RAND IN 1969, inscribed in Rand's hand on the title-page: "London Oct 3.69 from Hans Schleger." EXTENSIVELY ANNOTATED BY RAND: 71 pages bear a total of 164 of Rand's pencilled notes, underlinings, and doodles. In total, 91 phrases or sentences are underlined, 63 notes in margins repeat or amplify ideas, and there are five doodles, four annotated commentaries, and one correction. Rand, the leading American modern graphic designer of the day, visited Schleger (1898-1976) in the autumn of 1969 in London. Rand admired Schleger, or Zero as he was known, once praising his role in modern design: "Hans Schleger was a graphic designer before the concept of graphic designer was invented." Zero pioneered the concept of corporate identity, working on logos and branding for John Lewis, Penguin Press, and Finmar Furniture, among other companies. The two designers met soon after the war at the Arts Club in Dover. "It was only a short time after we left the club that we were walking arm-in-arm along Picadilly, destined to be friends" (Paul Rand, quoted in Stephen Heller, 'Paul Rand.') Rand shows an active engagement with Jaffe's text on de Stijl, early in the text marginally noting "dynamic equilibrium" (p.5) as an ideal of the movement. A number of Rand's notes mark points of comparison with Bauhaus tenets, and at one point he makes special reference to the concept of play in de Stijl practices (p.100). There are several notes in the section on Van Doesberg's writings on a new architecture (pp.160-61). A rather vehement note of "No Math!" accompanies Jaffe's writings on the need to step away from mathematical composition (pp.104-105). This important association copy, connecting two twentieth century masters to one of its major design movements, is accompanied by two evocative documents of the trip: 1. Paul Rand's boarding pass from his flight aboard the Concorde. Rand's name is written in twice on the die-cut ticket. He sat in seat 1B. 2. Rand's manuscript notes and drawings on a sheet of lined paper. Two pages on one sheet, 8 x 5 inches. Includes a dozen small drawings in blue ink, and notes for a lecture on de Stijl (including a reference to Matisse): "The story of modern art is the story of The Transformation of the 3 dimensional world of the documentary to the 2 dimensional world of the imaginary."

[Promotional Sign]: Match Your Thirst Drink Coke

[Atlanta, Georgia: Coke-Cola Co, 1956. Very Good. Promotional sign. Stiff cardboard measuring 34" x 18.5, in original aluminum 40" x 24" frame. Very good only with rubbing, a few puncture holes, dampstain and 3" tear at the bottom center of the image; the aluminum frame is moderate scraped and with only three of the remaining endcaps. A point-of-sale sign featuring an African-American couple staring into each other's eyes while drinking bottles of Coke. Coke debuted its first "Negro Market" ad campaign in 1953, the brainchild of African-American pitchman Moss Hyles Kendrix, who understood the importance of the untapped black consumer market. The campaign started with ads featuring popular black athletes and celebrities of the day drinking Coke before switching its focus in 1955 to feature "everyday" African-Americans men and women working and playing sports, young people studying and flirting, and children riding bicycles and playing with friends. These images were a departure from Coke advertisements of the past which portrayed African-American in stereotypical ways or subservient roles, while this campaign featured black models acting and doing the same things as their white counterpart. A nice example a scarce and important early Coke advertisement with its original frame.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. The Birth of Britain; The New World; The Age of Revolution; The Great Democracies.

London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1956–8 - 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges red. With the dust jackets. An excellent set in the dust jackets, with a few tiny blemishes and very slight creasing at extremities, spine panels very lightly faded. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. First editions, first impressions. Churchill began his history of the British Empire and the United States during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s, but did not complete it until after his retirement in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States. Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history: around a quarter of the third volume, The Age of Revolution, is dedicated to the War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, The Great Democracies, contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Chongya jue ju bai shou

[New York-?]: the author, 1956. 100p., slender paperback, bound with thread in traditional style, very good. Scarce booklet of poetry by Chiang Yee, the author of the "Silent Traveler" series, inscribed to Huang Keyi (the collector in San Francisco whose English name was Carl Wong), with a signed card laid in; also included is the original hand-addressed envelope that Yee used to mail the booklet to Wong. The title label on the front cover has ghostly traces of handwriting in reverse. The preface is datelined 1955, Oxford, but the return address on the envelope is in New York. Poems inspired by Yee's travels, especially in England.

        de Stijl 1917-1931

Rand admired Schlegel, or Zero as he was known, once praising his role in modern design: "Hans Schleger was a graphic designer before the concept of graphic designer was invented." Zero pioneered the concept of corporate identity, working on logos and branding for John Lewis, Penguin Press, and Finmar Furniture, among other companies.

This allowed for inclusion of material that was still classified when five of the other six volumes were published, but as a result complete sets are somewhat more difficult to compile.         Zoo Quest to Guiana [with] Zoo Quest for a Dragon [with] Zoo Quest in Paraguay [with] Quest in Paradise [with] Zoo Quest to Madagascar [with] Quest under Capricorn. THE 'ZOO QUEST' SERIES COMPLETE IN DUSTWRAPPERS

Lutterworth Press. 6 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with coloured frontispieces and very numerous coloured and monochrome plates throughout, neat signature on front free endpaper of first volume; original cloth (green/red/green/red/blue/green respectively), gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean set in dustwrapper, the wrappers mildly chipped at extremities but with no major loss. A bright, fresh set in the original colourful wrappers of Attenborough's earliest books, recording his 'Zoo Quest' animal-foraging expeditions in many different territories. Well-illustrated and delightfully written, these early titles display much of the talent and infectious charm that has since made their author a naturalist, broadcaster and presenter of world renown. The series captures well the appeal of his first-ever television series 'Zoo Quest' that ran on the BBC from 1954-1964. It also gave rise, incidentally (in those far-off pre-computer days), to a highly popular board game! The sequence comprises 'Zoo Quest to Guiana' (1956), 'Zoo Quest for a Dragon' (1957), 'Zoo Quest to Paraguay' (1959), 'Quest in Paradise' (1960), 'Zoo Quest to Madagascar' (1961) and 'Quest under Capricorn' (1963). Two omnibus volumes of extracts were published for a new generation of readers in the 1980s. COMPLETE SETS IN THIS CONDITION ARE SELDOM OFFERED FOR SALE.

        Malone Dies

Grove Press 1956 - The middle volume of Beckett's landmark trilogy, the first American edition of Malone Dies came with a plain blank canvas cover with the title and author's name stamped in black on the cover and spine, and an extremely fragile plastic dust jacket, completely blank except for the price ($3.75) stamped on the inside flap. This edition was numbered, 1-500, and this is copy number 211. The book itself is in fine condition, with only some tanning on the front flyleaf to indicate this is not a new book. The glassine dust jacket has two noticeable tears, but the price is intact. A truly striking and unique package, a key work of 20th-century literature, and a worthy addition to any Beckett collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
