The Quiet American.

London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1955. First edition of Greene's classic novel of exploration of love, innocence, and morality in Vietnam. Octavo, original blue cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to his editor and publisher at Heinemann, "For Frere, This book with all my gratitude and affection, and in hope that there will be a few more to bother you with. Love, Graham." A.S. Frere, was the chairman of William Heinemann and a major figure in British publishing and a close friend of Greene's. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A wonderful association. Against the intrigue and violence of Vietnam during the French war with the Vietminh, Alden Pyle, an idealistic young American, is sent to promote democracy, as his friend, Fowler, a cynical foreign correspondent, looks on. Fowler's mistress, a beautiful native girl, creates a catalyst for jealousy and competition between the men, and a cultural clash resulting in bloodshed and deep misgivings. Written in 1955 prior to the Vietnam conflict, The Quiet American foreshadows the events leading up to the Vietnam conflict. The Quiet American proves "urgent, mournful and unsparing there's not another book quite like it" (Salon). Adapted to the screen in 1958, and again in 2002 starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser.

[Broadside]: The Poets' Theatre presents a return engagement of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake in Scenes Arranged by Mary Manning

Cambridge [Massachusetts]: The Poets' Theatre Workshop, 1955. Good. Broadside illustrated in color on stiff cardstock. Measuring 10.25" x 13.75". Two incorrectly used printed apostrophes are whited-out by hand, some horizontal creases, and a small, light stain, near very good. Poster for Manning's stage adaptation of Joyce's novel that Manning arranged in 1955 as The Voice of Shem. Manning was a regular cast member at the Abbey Theatre, a playwright, and was a filmmaker. After a distinguished career in Ireland she moved to Boston where she served as managing director of the Idler Theatre at Radcliffe College in the 1940s and was one of the founding members of the Poet's Theatre in Cambridge in 1950. The poster notes that tickets were on sale at the Mandrake Book Store on Boylston Street in Cambridge. Interesting period-style illustration of a beer quaffer blathering over the cantilevered corpse of Finnegan. The original performances were in April of 1955; this return engagement ran for little more than a week in late November and early December 1955. OCLC locates no copies of the poster, although copies of Manning's adaptation in book form published by the Harvard University Press are plentiful. We found a black and white rendition of the poster image online on a French blog but could find no illuminating information there. Presumably these posters would have been extremely ephemeral.

        The Sweet Flypaper of Life.

Simon & Schuster, New York 1955 - First edition of the classic collaboration between Roy DeCarava and Langston Hughes. Small octavo, original photographic wrappers. Signed by DeCarava. In near fine condition. Roth 101, Parr & Badger, The Photobook I, 242; The Open Book, 160. "Acknowledged as the most influential black writer of his generation, and as one of the greatest American poets of all time here composed a fictional story to accompany DeCarava’s images, creating a lyrical tale about imaginary characters to go with photographs of real people" (Roth, 138). Hailed as "an important step forward" in the history of photobooks, Sweet Flypaper of Life proved especially significant in its "design, featuring a pacy, cinematic style. It is also a book that had more impact in its cheaper paperback edition, since, radically, Hughes’ text begins on the cover" (Parr & Badger II:242). "The book won two awards, received critical acclaim in The New York Times Book Review sold out its first edition, and was reprinted many times. It is one of the most successful collaborations between a great writer and a great photographer ever published" (Roth, 138). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Waterfront.

New York: Random House, 1955. First edition of Schulberg novel adapted from his Academy Award-winning screenplay. Octavo, original beige cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Best wishes Budd Schulberg Nov. 1978." Fine in an excellent dust jacket with some of the usual peeling to the lamination. Building on his Academy Award-winning screenplay of the classic film, Budd Schulberg's On the Waterfront is the story of ex-prizefighter Terry Malloy's valiant stand against corruption on the New Jersey docks. It generates all the power, grittiness, and truth of that great production, but goes beyond it in set and setting. It is a novel of strength and fallibility, of hope and defeat, of love and betrayal. "Intensely personalized, white-hot fiction with all the menace, suspense, narrative flow, fresh characterization and social message anybody could reasonably expect in a novel It's the best of Schulberg, a full-fledged performance by a gifted American writer" (New York Times). Elia Kazan directed the film On the Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando and features Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, Pat Henning, and, in her film debut, Eva Marie Saint. The soundtrack score was composed by Leonard Bernstein. received twelve Academy Award nominations, winning eight, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Brando, Best Supporting Actress for Saint, and Best Director for Kazan. In 1997 it was ranked by the American Film Institute as the eighth-greatest American movie of all time. In 1989, the film was deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Information about Job Conditions in the Near and Middle East.

San Francisco: Bechtel,, 1955. Prepared by Bechtel Corporation acting under and Pursuant to its Subcontract with International Bechtel Builders, Inc. Oblong-octavo-size pamphlet (198 × 136 mm), 26 leaves wire-stitched in original light card printed wrappers. Area map showing the Trans-Arabian pipeline. Covers marked, slightly creased along joints, contents clean. Very good. Mimeographed handbook issued to Bechtel employees preparing to travel to the oil fields of Saudi Arabia or Bahrain. Bechtel, now one of the world's largest construction companies, first became established in the Middle East in 1943, when it was awarded a contract to enlarge the facilities of the Bahrain Petroleum Company at Awali, and another contract to build the Aramco refinery at Ras Tanura on the Saudi mainland. In 1947 it began work on the Trans-Arabian Pipeline, which was completed in 1950. At the time this handbook was issued the company was active mainly in Dhahran, Ras Tanura, Abqaiq and Ain Dar — all Aramco sites — and Bahrain; the introduction summarises previous contracts with the Kuwait Oil Company, the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, and the Iraqi Petroleum Company. In addition to a brief vocabulary and reading list, together with extensive logistical information, there is a tellingly elementary survey of Arab culture and religion (most Arabs are "followers of the religion founded by Mohammed and are called Moslems … The religion is called Islam", p. 9). Stipulations regarding behaviour often suggest tense relations between Americans and locals ("NEVER STRIKE OR CURSE AN ARAB EMPLOYEE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES", p. 29). Other recommendations might appear to strike an alarmist note: "If you wander in the vicinity of an Arab Mosque, positively do not enter the building. The mosques are sacred to the Moslems and you may suffer bodily injury by the Arabs … If you should find yourself near a Mosque, head in an opposite direction and don't be curious enough to get any closer" (p. 9). An interesting survival illuminating the rough-and-ready expansion of American business interests in Arabia and the Gulf during the first years of oil.

Archive]: A Collection of Love Letters and Personal Correspondence sent to Yulla Lipchitz

1955 - An extraordinary collection of nearly 300 letters, consisting of about 250 love letters and 50 letters of related personal correspondence, sent to Yulla Lipchitz, sculptor and photographer, and the wife of the renowned sculptor Jacques Lipchitz. Included in the collection are 12 holographic letters by Jacques Lipchitz, eight black and white photographs of Yulla with two of her lovers taken before her marriage to Lipchitz, several telegrams and post cards, a few of Yulla's draft replies, and several pieces of manuscript and printed ephemera. Nearly all of the letters are in English, with about 20 in German. Mostly near fine. Although Yulla, her first husband Frederick Mott, and most of her correspondents were German-Jews who fled Germany in the late 1930s, nearly all of the letters are written in English (with occasional flourishes in German), and nearly all abound with deeply felt emotional passions for her, as indicated by such frequent salutations as: "Darling Pussilein, my love!" -- "Darlichingen! Ich Kusse dich" -- "Yullalein, love, Kisses!" Over 150 of the letters are from Walter J. Fischel, an important German-Jewish scholar known internationally for his pioneering studies of Oriental Jewry, and two other men (about 25 letters each) with whom Yulla was having illicit affairs during the War years. The letters of all three men are remarkable for their impassioned, often wild declarations of love, and their frequent pleas to arrange meetings and to get married, if Yulla's husband would grant her a divorce. In the end, after an attempt to reconcile with her husband in 1945-1946, all four men were no match for Jacques Lipchitz, who first met Yulla in 1944, and married her in 1948.The letters also contain frequent references to the status of family members in Europe during the war. For example, her first lover (known only as Abe), provides an account of the 1941 passage of Yulla's brother on the infamous S.S. Navemar (a Spanish freighter built for a capacity of 28 passengers, used to evacuate over 1,100 Jewish refugees to the United States): "There is no delay -- now -- the ship sailed from Cadiz, Spain on July 28 - from Seville on 30th, from Lisbon on Aug. 2nd . Your brother's visa cannot have expired since the regulations are concerned with his port of departure, i.e. Cadiz . As I write I'm getting more angrier by the minute -- wrath & disappointment are concurrent emotions -- & you -- my sweet -- have the honor of stirring up both in me to the highest pitch in ages of its existence ."In the fall of 1945, when Yulla broke with her lover Walter Fischel in an attempt to reconcile with her husband, Fischel's grief, compounded by a family crises, is heartbreaking: "I came home . after having performed somehow the role of a consoler to my mother in her new grief and sorrow about the very possible, though not definite death of her sister and brother-in-law at Theresienstadt. The angel of death (if one can call this so) is terrible cruel towards us . Why retreat just now, when our long cherished hope of living together comes almost near to its fulfillment . Darling dearest, words really can't express my feelings, whenever I am with you. Every hour, every minute -- a kind of holy exaltation. There are no [words] for our love. I want you to avert that "unedles Ungluck" which you are talking about. Please call me, write me, meet me, love me, Kiss me, and be what you have all along meant to me -- my dearest dearest dearest darling -- please call me ."In the 12 letters from Jacques Lipchitz that date between 1949 and 1955, he also repeatedly declares his profound love for her and their newborn daughter. For example, in May 1949 while on a lecture tour, he writes from Chicago: "Darling Puchinka, good morning, I slept very well (alone) and I feel today more rested. But it will be a busy day for me . I accepted an invitation to have lunch with the students of the Department of Architecture of the University of Illinois . then I will have t

Each on a single folded "Aerogramme" sheet, addressed by Cockerell on verso; one page each. 8vo. Cockerell to Paul Standard. Charming letters from the aging museum director, collector, and calligrapher, to his American counterpart Paul Standard, founding member of the Typophiles and champion of calligraphy. In the first, Cockerell expresses his delight on receiving the news that he "will have the great pleasure of seeing you and Mrs. Standard here in June - by the same post came one from RUTH DRAPER saying exactly the same thing ... I shall be delighted to show you my Bembo ms and other fine specimens of Italian calligraphy." In the second, Cockerell touchingly apologizes for his tardiness in answering: "I am going through rather a tiresome phase of my malady (Old Age), which makes me lethargic and rather disinclined to answer letters ... Stella dear, I think of you lovingly and wish speedy completion to your new book, with much applause to follow. Dear Paul, I feel that we understand each other and have a mutual affecton which wll not wear thin ..." In the last letter, Cockerell is glad to know that "'Italian Food' [by Elizabeth David] has been an acceptable addition to Stella's culinary library ... Also I was glad to have news of STANLEY MORISON, for whom I have great admiration ... BR is another old and dear friend to whom I am glad to have had my recalled - He is maturing but I believe he's not eager to grow old - what a lot he has done for printing both in America and here ...".
