        Christmas Card.

[1955] Mounted, original lithograph, 330 x 210mm, central fold, otherwise a very good copy. Barnett Freedman's personal Christmas card for 1955, using a proof of the card he designed for The Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Company. This copy only printed on one side and without the text "The Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Company". We presume that Freedman printed off a handful of proofs before entering the lettering for Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Company to use as personal cards. This is signed "Claudia and Barnett Freedman". From the collection of fellow artist Kenneth Holmes, O.B.E., A.R.C.A.

Each on a single folded "Aerogramme" sheet, addressed by Cockerell on verso; one page each. 8vo. Cockerell to Paul Standard. Charming letters from the aging museum director, collector, and calligrapher, to his American counterpart Paul Standard, founding member of the Typophiles and champion of calligraphy. In the first, Cockerell expresses his delight on receiving the news that he "will have the great pleasure of seeing you and Mrs. Standard here in June - by the same post came one from RUTH DRAPER saying exactly the same thing ... I shall be delighted to show you my Bembo ms and other fine specimens of Italian calligraphy." In the second, Cockerell touchingly apologizes for his tardiness in answering: "I am going through rather a tiresome phase of my malady (Old Age), which makes me lethargic and rather disinclined to answer letters ... Stella dear, I think of you lovingly and wish speedy completion to your new book, with much applause to follow. Dear Paul, I feel that we understand each other and have a mutual affecton which wll not wear thin ..." In the last letter, Cockerell is glad to know that "'Italian Food' [by Elizabeth David] has been an acceptable addition to Stella's culinary library ... Also I was glad to have news of STANLEY MORISON, for whom I have great admiration ... BR is another old and dear friend to whom I am glad to have had my recalled - He is maturing but I believe he's not eager to grow old - what a lot he has done for printing both in America and here ...".

The Structure of sodium thymonucleate fibres, parts 1, 2 & 3. , signed by Raymond Gosling

Offprint from Acta Crystallographica 6 (1953). 673-677pp. (2) The structure of sodium thymonucleate fibres. II. The cylindrically symmetrical Patterson function. Offprint from Acta Crystallographica 6 (1953). 678-685pp. (3) The structure of sodium thymonucleate fibres. III. The three-dimensional Patterson function. Offprint from Acta Crystallographica 8 (1955). Together 3 offprints. 268 x 202 mm. Without wrappers as issued. Fine copies, each one signed by R. G. Gosling on the first page. First Separate Editions. In January 1951, after having learned X-ray crystallography techniques in Paris, Rosalind Franklin arrived at the MRC Biophysics Unit at King's College, London, to pursue research on the structure of DNA. The head of the MRC, John T. Randall, arranged for Gosling, a graduate student previously associated with Maurice Wilkins, to work with her. At the same time, James Watson and Francis Crick were pursuing their own DNA investigations at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge, which culminated in their famous double-helix model of DNA structure (based in part on information derived from one of Franklin's x-ray photographs). In March 1953, before they were aware of the Watson-Crick model, Franklin and Gosling submitted two papers on DNA structure for publication in Acta Crystallographica. "The first describes the observations on the types of X-ray diagram given by highly orientated specimens of sodium DNA at different humidities. Two forms of DNA fibres, named A and B, are described and the conditions are given for producing them. In this paper are reproduced the beautiful X-ray photographs which were used in the subsequent analysis of both forms. The accompanying paper describes quantitative measures on the X-ray pattern of the A form. . . ." (Klug, "Rosalind Franklin" [1968], p. 808). Two years later Franklin and Gosling submitted their final paper in the series, "contain[ing] an interpretation of the three-dimensional Patterson function of the A structure in which the orientation of the helical molecules in the unit cell of the crystal is analysed and a detailed picture of the arrangement of the phosphate groups is proposed." (Klug, p. 808). [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Photo Album]: Several Botany Trips by the Harvard Botany Club [hand-lettered title page]: Photographs Volume II. Summer 1954 concluded to [1955]"

1955 - Three-ring bound loose leaf binder. 153 mounted black-and-white photographs, most approximately 3.5" x 5", mostly fine, with a small group (perhaps ten or fewer) of commercial images of park locations. Virtually all are captioned. Internal evidence seems to indicate that American botanist, author, and photographer Sherwin Carlquist (recipient of the 1993 Asa Gray Award) was most likely the compiler of this album. The first sections consists of well-composed images of a botany trip in the West, primarily in California (Morro Bay, Carmel, Bolinas Bay, Lagunitas), Oregon (Pistol River, Brandon, Harris Beach State Park, and many other locations), and Washington (Pacific Beach, Olympia National Forest, Sekiu, Kalalock Beach, Friday Harbor). These are followed by images of trips to Long Island (only a few images), followed by images of several trips with the Harvard Botany Club to Mt. Washington (several trips), Plum Island, Horn Pond Mt., and a trip to Illinois. With few exceptions the images are devoted largely to Botany and geology. The later Harvard Botany Club's trips are well-captioned and identify several participants notable in scientific (not surprisingly botany) circles such as Robert Dressler and A.Q. Dickson. Curiously we have found mention of a second volume that was sold on Ebay (it annoys us mightily that they have been separated), but this is as we found it, and is at least interesting and can clearly stand alone.         Original Charles "Teenie" Harris Photograph of Roberto Clemente Receiving a Trophy

Pittsburgh, 1955. Very Good. ca. 1955 silver gelatin photograph print of Roberto Clemente receiving a trophy award at Forbes Field, Pittsburgh. Image measures 8 x 10 inches, housed in archival museum-quality matting, 14 x 16 inches. SIGNED by Harris in the lower right corner. A very good photograph with minor surface wear, small spot on the microphone stand. Light discoloration to the verso of the photograph where it was removed from a foamcore mounting. Still a very nice image. Likely a reprint from the 1960s, with an original signature. Charles "Teenie" Harris (1908-1998) photographed Pittsburgh's African American community from c. 1935 to c. 1975. His archive of nearly 80,000 images is one of the most detailed and intimate records of the black urban experience known today.
