        Tom Ripley

Coward McCann, Alfred A. Knopf, Doubleday, Lippincott and Crowell. All first American editions 1955-1992, New York - The five Tom Ripley novels - The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955), Ripley Under Ground (1970), Ripley's Game (1974), The Boy Who Followed Ripley (1980) and Ripley Under Water (1992) - aka Ripliad. Tom Ripley is a not untypical protagonist for the second half of the twentieth century – a likeable sociopath, heroic and demonic, energetic and amoral, overcivilised and undersensitised, with, as an American in Europe, some literary ancestry – who has been so thoughtfully constructed for the reader that "Reading the book[s] becomes exquisitely uncomfortable. [They are] perfectly engineered to make us give our sympathies to the wrong man. To rejoice, even, when luck is on his side . we get so deep inside his head". Twenty-six years after the last Ripley, and twenty-two years after his creator’s death, his appeal continues. He has been played in movies, television and radio, to date, by Alain Delon, Jonathan Kent, Matt Damon, John Malkovich, Barry Pepper and Ian Hart. Or, the search continues for the definitive Ripley.Ripley’s Game is inscribed by the author in 1976; laid in are three aerogrammes from Patricia Highsmith to the recipient, all typed, letters signed, 1976-1977, literary news, her work, plans to meet, "Yes, I no sooner struck ------ with a little buckshot, than I was whammed in the Observer 20 Nov. With an awful photo and a not very sympathetic article. So much for 8 hours of my time." The Talented Mr. Ripley has some edgewear, label of the Jaffe Agency, otherwise fine in first issue dustwrapper evenly sunned on the spine. The Boy Who Followed Ripley is a review copy with promotional material, including a photograph of the author, laid in. Ripley's Game is near fine in a fine dustwrapper. Ripley Under Water is fine in dustwrapper. The five vols. and three aerogrammes [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Original blue paper wrappers printed in black. 4 colour folding maps to rear pocket. Ownership inscription to front wrappers.         The Body Snatchers [wraparound band]

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1955. First Impression (no further printings noted), with the uncommon promotional wraparound band, "The Star Thriller of the Month." Small 8vo: 192pp. Publisher's scarlet cloth, spine lettered in black, dust jacket priced 10s/6d. Faint spotting to top edge, leaves toned at margins (as usual), touch of wear to edges of jacket, but a Fine, bright, unread copy. Anatomy of Wonder II-401. Horror Literature 4-116. Originally published in Colliers, in 1954. Finney's chilling classic, retitled Invasion of the Body Snatchers for its four film incarnations, takes place in the idyllic rural community of Mill Valley, which is invaded by seeds that have drifted to Earth from space. The seeds replace sleeping humans with perfect physical duplicates grown from plant-like pods, while their victims turn to dust. The author's second (and most important) book, originally serialized in Colliers. Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        UNTITLED - PHOTOGENIC DRAWING

1955. Original and unique cameraless image 11 x 14 inch [ 27.9 x 35.5 cm.] on double weight silver gelatin stock, drymounted to card stock just slightly larger. On the mount reverse is printed in pencil her name and the number 51, which likely designates the year, and an arrow pointing upwards to designate the print orientation. The original owner has written his name and address in pencil near the bottom of the mount. There are a few instances of rippling where the adhesive has given way but has caused no damage to the print surface. There is a very small and faint crease at the top left corner. A very good vintage print. Lotte Jacobi was primarily a portrait photographer, born in Thorn, West Prussia in 1896, of a long line of German photographers. She operated a photographic studio in Berlin and later in New York and Deering, New Hampshire. Beginning in 1946 and largely concluding in 1955, Jacobi experimented with cameraless photography, "painting" the photographic paper with modulated light sources, cellophane and glass. She named these Photogenics. Given the patina visible in the darkest black, this unique image is certainly from this period.
