The Lord of the Rings, 1st US Edition, Early Impressions with Dusjtackets

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1955. First Edition. Original Cloth. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1955/1955/1956 1st Editions, 2nd imp./3rd imp./1st Impressions respectively. A beautiful set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is housed in a custom slipcase to show and protect this beautiful set. The set is all original cloth with the correct original dustjackets. The Fellowship of the Ring corresponds to the 3rd impression of the UK 1st Edition, but is the 2nd US impression, as Houghton Mifflin did not order any of the 2nd UK impressions. The Very Good dustjacket of the Fellowship exhibits a small amount of loss to the corners and tips of the spine area, along with some minor chips to the back panel and flap fold area. The spine is lightly faded but the front panel still shows nice bright colors. There is a couple of small pinholes on the spine, and a larger chip at the rear bottom spine fold area. The Two Towers Near Fine dustjacket exhibits all the correct issue points for this early copy, including the "stripe, gap and cufflink" points. There is only minor rubbing at the spine fold area, no loss or chips, beautiful bright colors, a tiny bit of fading to the spine, hardly noticeable. The Fellowship dustjacket has the photo of Tolkien in a 'V' on the rear panel, is not priced, and has the 'w' nicked on the front flap, line 11. The Return of the King dustjacket has the oversized '5' in the price with double uprights, the correct issue point for a true 1st Impression. The Very Good Plus dustjacket on The Return of the King shows some rubbing and minor loss at the spine tips and along the flap fold with minor loss to the tips. One closed tear with a pinhole sized loss to the front panel, the only other fault, a bit of soiling to the white areas, mainly on the back panel and flaps The books are tight and clean without inscriptions or writing, no foxing or offsetting noted. The Fellowship does have a book plate on the front pastedown, hidden by the dustjacket flap. None of the dustjackets are price clipped, and all lack any foxing whatsoever. Besides being a truly beautiful looking set, this set is very scarce and collectable. The original maps are present in all three volumes, no extra folds or tears noted. A small bookstore sticker on the rear pastedown of the Return of the King. Additional digital images can be supplied on request. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

Davey, illustrated endpapers, 1958 gift inscription from "Tommy" Douglas to "Sandy" Robertson. Alexander "Sandy" Duff Robertson was born on April 28,1926, in Dunkfield, England. He received an M.B. from the University of Edinburgh in 1949, a D.P.H. from the University of London in 1955, and an M.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961. In 1958, Robertson became head of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan where he remained until accepting the executive directorship of the Milbank Memorial Fund in New York City in 1962., The ffep bears an warm and heart felt inscription " To Dr. "Sandy" Robertson Saskatchewan's most recent acquisition in the field of Social Medicine from [signed] T. C. Douglas Premier of Sask. Sept 24th 1958" , In November 2004 a nation wide vote by over one million Canadians selected Tommy Douglas as "The Greatest Canadian of all Time." Known as the 'Father of Medicare' - he launched it in Saskatchewan when he was premier of that province, first universal hospital insurance in 1947, then medicare in 1959. He has been described as, "the most influential politician never to be elected Prime Minister." Tommy Douglas was a great Canadian he had many roles: a minister, a family man, a persuasive public speaker, a comedian, an advocate for the poor, unemployed and farmers. But those roles just combine into one title to most Canadians: a great politician who cared about people. He was not in politics for prestige or the money of political life, he was there because he wanted to make life better for all Canadians. Always able to adapt and change his approach if one method did not work. For Tommy Douglas democratic socialism was really his only political choice because it was the only philosophy that valued all people as much as he did." quoted from Wayne Fisher on-line article Tommy Douglas Making Canada Better!

The Lord of the Rings, First UK Edition, Early Impressions, with Dustjackets

London: Allen & Unwin, 1955. 1st Edition. Original Cloth. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. An early matched set of this classic of fantasy literature. George Allen & Unwin, 1955/55/55 1st UK Edition. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 3rd impression published in January 1955. The Two Towers is a 2nd impression published 1955, with the date (1955) on the title page, which identifies it as a true 2nd impression. The Return of the King is a 1st impression dated 1955, the 1st State without the signature mark '4' and the infamous slipped type on page 49, as per Hammond's revised opinion. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition. All three books are in their original Very Good Plus dustjackets, with almost no tanning, and in beautiful matched condition. None are price clipped, and have only the most minor of chipping or loss to the edges. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition. A beautiful Near Fine/Very Good Plus set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. A custom slipcase to house these treasures is included in the price. Fellowship of the Ring - 1st UK Edition, 3rd impression. Book is in Near Fine condition, with previous owners name and inscription to the front endpaper, no other writing. The gilt is bright and untarnished on the spine. The boards are very clean and bright, with no shelf wear on the bottom edge. The dustjacket is unclipped and shows beautifully, a small chip to the front upper flap fold. No tanning of the spine and only the lightest soiling, a beautiful, correct 3rd impression dustjacket. The Two Tower's - 1st UK Edition, stated 2nd impression, has the date (1955) on the title page, which would indicate a true 2nd imp. Book is in Near Fine condition. No names or writing, and with some foxing/offsetting on the ffep. The boards are very clean and tight, with no shelf wear on the bottom edges. Gilt is bright and untarnished. The dustjacket is not clipped, and is only slightly sunned to the spine, otherwise is virtually perfect. No tanning, no chips or tears, a beautiful example of a true 2nd imp dustjacket. The Return of the King - 1st UK Edition, 1st impression, 1st state without the slipped type and the signature mark '4' on page 49. This is Hammond and Anderson's original definition of the 2nd state, but this has been revised, and is now considered the 1st state. This was confirmed thru correspondence with Wayne Hammond. This book would grade at Very Good Plus condition. Previous owners name and inscription and no foxing/offsetting on the free endpapers. The boards are very clean and bright, one tiny spot to the rear boards, a couple of mildly bumped corners, and light shelf wear is evident, mainly to the bottom edge. Gilt is still bright on the spine. The 1st state dustjacket is not clipped, with the red lettering slightly faded. The spine is lightly soiled and untanned. A couple of small chips on the tips of the flap folds, and a 1" closed tear to the front spine fold, reinforced with archival tape to the verso. A very nice example of the 1st impression 1st state dustjacket lacking the blurbs to the rear flap. A beautiful, Near Fine/Very Good Plus, early impression set of this classic of modern fiction. Housed in custom marbled paper slipcase to show and protect these 'precious' books. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Very Good Plus.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1955 7th Impression in Dustjacket

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1955. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A fantastic copy of an early printing of The Hobbit. The 1955, 7th overall printing, or the 3rd printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Near Fine copy in Very Good Plus/Near Fine original dustjacket, designed by Tolkien, featuring his Mountains & Dragon design, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 7th impression on front flap, price clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain. One of probably only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The text block is clean and bright, bound in the light brown colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows no shelf wear, slight rubbing to the dustjacket at the folds, no soiling to note, or bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. A previous owners name and date to the first blank page, no other names or any other writing. The dustjacket shows the smallest amount of wear to the top of the spine, and the folds at the flaps have the smallest of chips, none larger that 2 or 3 mm. The jacket shows a light amount of soiling in the white sections, and the spine is lightly tanned. Overall a beautiful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in this condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Very Good Plus.

        Lolita

Paris: Olympia Press. (1955). The correct first edition of Nabokov's masterwork, published in Paris by the Olympia Press, which was most widely known at that time for the pornography published in its "Travelers Companion" series. This novel, which is now viewed as one of the high spots of 20th century literature, was not published in that series, but was bound in wrappers that are essentially identical to the Travelers Companion books -- presumably so that potential buyers might purchase it thinking they were buying the more hard-core erotica. Shortly after it was published, it was banned in France for three years (1956-1959). Published in an edition estimated at 5000 copies. Two volumes in wrappers, this being the first issue, distinguished from the second by the absence of a price sticker over the original price on the back cover of Volume II. Mild foxing to the edges of the text blocks; gentle creasing to the spines and trace rubbing to the folds. Near fine. . First Edition. Softcover.

Gargantua. Lithographs by Antoni CLAVÉ (Clave)

Toulon: Les Bibliophiles de Provence, 1955, first Clavé edition, number XXXIII of CC (200) impressions (total edition in book form 200; there also was a portfolio edition of 20 deluxe suites of plates) on grand velin d'Arches, produced for André Cordesse. The great Rabelais classic is here illustrated by Antoni Clave with 61 original color lithographs (including 4 double-page and 15 single-page, all hors-texte) + 61 original color woodcuts for lettrines and cul-de-lampe. The complete book with about 250 pp. (text and the lithos); loose leaves with tissue guards in publisher's wrappers, chemise and slipcase, the latter two with a lithographic design by Clave. Overall size 16 x 12 x 3 in. (41 x 30 x 8 cm); in excellent condition. References: Strachan ”The Artist & The Book in France”, pp. 146 & 329: ”… Gargantua (Rabelais), a work to which Clavé brought all his inventiveness of design. Apart from the brilliant color combinations (some involving five to eight separate stones)… Clavé devised a large number of initial letters… Certainly this book lives up to Rabelais's exhortation ”Vivez joyeux”; it is also Gargantuan in scale with its format”. Strachan goes on declaring this work as sequel to Derain's Pantagruel. Other references: Monod 9388; Rauch 191; ”The Artist & The Book” p.47. This book is Clave's masterpiece, by far his most important graphic work and a good example of the French Expressionist Realism. It took Clave 5 years (1951-1955) to complete this project. Provenance: André Cordesse collection.

        LEOPOLDO LUGONES. Signed

Buenos Aires: Editorial Troquel, Colección Diálogos del Presente, Number 5, 1955 From A Great Poet To a Great Poet About A Great Poet. Inscribed by Borges to his close friend, the Argentine poet, Vicente Barbieri. First edition. A fine fresh copy in the original printed wrappers. [Helft p.77; Becco 105], 8vo,, "Para Vicente Barbieri, afectos y un abrazo. Jorge Luis Borges" [For Vicente Barbieri, affections & a hug. Jorge Luis Borges]. Leopoldo Lugones (1874-1938) was a journalist & short-story writer. His poetical work reflects the Spanish American modernist movement headed by Ruben Darío, i.e., Lunario sentimental, (1909) & Romancero (1924). To Borges, Lugones represented his Argentinian side - finding the paths of his own literature by opposing Lugones' Baroque style with a more Classical stance, in which real ity is always a provisional postulate. Borges returned to Lugones again & again. A Great Literary Association Copy.. 1st Edition.
