Jazz west coast: a portfolio of photographs.

Hollywood, CA: Linear Productions, Inc., 1955 - Quarto. Wire-stiched in the original illustrated card wrappers. Wraps a little rubbed and with a few creases and chips, text-block browning at the edges, but overall very good. 76-pages, plus ads., profusely illustrated from Claxton's photographs. Extremely uncommon collection of Claxton's superb evocations of the West Coast jazz scene, his first publication, this copy boldly signed by Claxton on the half-title. Art-directed by Lee Friedlander and Stuart Fox, edited by Claxton himself together with Nesuhi Ertegun, soon to be VP at Atlantic, and Richard Bock, founder of Pacific Jazz, who had hired Claxton as his art director, and for whose enterprises this would appear to be a promotional item. WorldCat locates twelve copies, ten in the US and two in Europe, one of them at the US Information Service in Rome. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        The Less Deceived.

Yorkshire: The Marvell Press, 1955 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled, tips a little worn, front hinge starting; an excellent copy in the bright jacket with lightly toned spine, some loss to spine ends and middle of spine, with small tape repairs to verso. First edition, first impression, in the first issue binding, presentation copy, inscribed by the poet to "Harry – remembering many happy meetings. Philip" on the front free endpaper, above the recipient's gift inscription "A parting present to Rawdon & Marguerite, hoping they'll come again soon! Harry, 29th September 1956". The recipient is most probably the critic and scholar H. A. Mason, whose name appears in the subscriber's list at the end of the book. Presentation copies of The Less Deceived, which contains some of Larkin's best poems including "Church Going", are extremely uncommon: this is the first such copy we have handled. With the relevant issue point for the first impression: the misprint "floor" for "sea" on p. 38, here with Larkin's holograph correction in blue ink. Bloomfield A6a. Voyez cela. Votre Jean Cocteau." [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Edition, one of 38 numbered copies on Holland paper, head print. Nice copy. Our copy is enriched by an autograph letter dated and signed by Jean Cocteau, of a page, addressed to (Jacques) Festy of Gallimard in which he is sorry to have confused Jean with Jerome Tharaud in whose chair he came from to succeed in the Immortals: "1st Nov. 1955. My home Festy, how to do for the slip calami Jean in place of Jerome? - seat vacated by the death of John - instead of Jerome- It should find a simple formula for a butterfly because I'm afraid it's too late to draw a leaf, see that, your Jean Cocteau. My First Seventy-six Years: The Autobiography of Hjalmar Schacht

Allan Wingate, 1955. vi, [2], 552 pages. Index. Black and white photographic plates. "One of the most important autobiographies of the post-war period, for there can be few personalities still alive who have been so intimately connected with the march of world events for so many years... His first great triumph was to rescue the German Mark from the inflation of 1921... As the Nazi avalanche swelled, Hitler persuaded him to occupy the Presidential chair at the Reichsbank... but (Schacht) soon saw that the Fuhrer was driving relentlessly towards war. A quarrel resulted and he left the Government, remaining under a cloud until he was arrested towards the close of the regime." - from dust jacket. Schact was later aquitted of war crimes at Nuremberg. Average wear to unmarked book. Above-average wear and soiling to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. Kehr & Langmaid 1217.
