Very near fine in a like dustjacket (offsetting to the endpapers, which is common for this title, but otherwise a lovely copy) A 'mirrors within mirrors' story of time travel, one which explores the complexity and paradoxes inherent in it.         Eros and Civilization: A Philosophical Inquiry Into Freud

Boston: Beacon Press, 1955. First Edition, First Printing. INSCRIBED by Herbert Marcuse on the front free end paper and dated in the year of publication: "To / Dr. Abram L. Sachar / With sincere regards / Herbert Marcuse / November 1955." Abram Sachar was the first president of Brandeis University, where Marcuse taught. A nice association. One of Marcuse's most influential books. It contains his famous essay, "Critique of Neo-Freudian Revisionism," where he claimed, rather mockingly, that its proponents had succumbed to the Power of Positive Thinking. 8vo., xii, 277 pages. A Near Fine book, with some color fading to the spine and along the top and bottom edges, in an unclipped Very Good dust jacket. Some shallow chipping and soiling to front and rear panels of the jacket and slight darkening to the jacket spine. Copies of the first edition are uncommon in the market, and inscribed copies are even more elusive, particularly association copies like this one. RARE. In the 1960s, the New Left celebrated Herbert Marcuse (1898-1979) for his Marxist critique of capitalism. His most famous student, according to a page one New York Times obituary, was left-wing activist Angela Davis, whom he taught at Brandeis. Marcuse was there from 1954 to 1965 and taught courses in the history of ideas, politics, social science, and philosophy.

        The Americans

New York: Grove Press. FIRST EDITION. Original cloth, original dust jacket. Fine/Very Good. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF FRANK'S MASTERPIECE, possibly the most influential of all American photobooks, SIGNED BY FRANK on half-title. With introduction by Jack Kerouac. In 1955, Frank "was at work on a project supported but the Guggenheim Foundation that was to present a radically different vision of America and the world… Frank's photographs--taken during travels across the United States in 1955 and 1956--would arguably become the most influential achievement of the entire postwar period in terms of their impact on photographers, artists, and writers.

"Frank's book was called, simply, The Americans. It was first published in France in 1958 and then in America in 1959 with a preface by Frank's friend, writer Jack Kerouac. Frank depicted America as a society with a deep-rooted sense of psychological isolation, what sociologist David Riesman called 'the lonely crowd.' America for Frank was a melancholy, even bleak or frightening place marred by racial and class divisions and enlivened only occasionally by a glimpse of lyrical sadness or joy. Frank's photographs, shot in black and white with a 35mm camera, seemed deliberately casual. The lighting and composition of the images were highly unconventional compared to most photojournalism or fine art photography at the time. Frank was after something more personal, more immediate and spontaneous" (Goldberg and Silberman, American Photography).

"Even the design of the text was somewhat revolutionary. Reflecting Walker Evans's book American Photography, Frank's book was sparse and the photographs were only printed on the right-hand side of the pages. The left-hand side was blank except for the page numbers. Thus, from Frank we get a vision of a foreigner's response to his adopted country that is a kind of 'anguished visual poetry rather than graphic art.' Jack Kerouac… wrote in the introduction to the book 'he sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world'" (Encyclopedia of Twentieth-century Photography).

New York: Grove Press, 1959. Oblong quarto, original black cloth, original dust jacket. Book fine, dust jacket price-clipped and with some edgewear. An exceptionally good copy with a particularly strong Frank signature of a book that is notoriously difficult to find in collectible condition.

        Life Savers Promotional Photo Archive

1955 - A collection of more than 150 promotional photographs and advertising mock-ups for Life Savers Candies from the 1920s to the early 1950s housed in three binders, including magazine spots, signage, counter displays, and in-person sampling, as well as celebrity endorsements and product placement in motion pictures. The photographs measure between 3.5" x 2.5" and 11.5" x 14". Most are loose, with a third of them mounted on artists boards and about a dozen with backmarks from various photographers, such as Guy Gillette, Hyman Fink, and Ewing Galloway. Overall near fine with scattered wear at the corners and creases to several of the oldest images; many of the mounted photographs have been touched up with China white or gray paint to highlight, crop, or remove details for publication, which was typical for print reproduction at that time.Life Savers were a ubiquitous part of American culture during the early and middle parts of the 20th Century and this collection of photographs documents their popularity with numerous signs, window displays, bill boards, bus ads, counter displays, and at point-of-purchase via "sample girls" who distributed the candies in the 1920s dressed in custom Life Savers outfits and with a custom Life Savers car. The collection also features numerous Hollywood stars holding the candy such as Jack Benny, George Raft, Lou Costello, Ralph Edwards, and Edgar Bergen with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. There are also a number of stills that show the candy in films such as *The Crooked Way* (1949), *Gun Crazy* (1950), *Red Light* (1949), *One Too Many* (1950), *Quicksand* (1950), *Destination Murder* (1950), and *A Bullet for Joey* (1955).This collection was likely owned by a representative from an advertising agency that worked for the Mint Products Company, which owned Life Savers, or possibly the company's own in-house marketing department. In addition to the advertising mock-ups are photographs of the Mint Products headquarters in Port Charles, New York, and over 30 photographs (and seven negatives) showing the workers and machinery used to produce the candy. A charming collection of vintage advertising image from one of America's most iconic brands.

Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 8.5 x 13.5 inches. Near Fine. Selby, p. 82.

        BRAIN WAVE.

Melbourne, London, Toronto: William Heinemann Ltd, [1955] - Octavo, boards. First British (and first hardcover) edition. "BRAIN WAVE, perhaps his most famous single novel, remains very nearly his finest. Its premise is simple: for millions of years the part of the galaxy containing our solar system has been moving through a vast force field whose effect has been to inhibit "certain electromagnetic and electrochemical processes", and thus certain neuronic functions; it is a concept Vernor Vinge would exploit and expand in his A FIRE UPON THE DEEP (1992). When Earth escapes the inhibiting field, synapse-speed immediately increases, causing a rise in intelligence; after the book has traced various absorbing consequences of this transformation, a transfigured humanity reaches for the stars, leaving behind (it is a conclusion evocative of Clifford D. Simak at his best) former mental defectives and bright animals to inherit the planet." - John Clute, SFE (online). Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-22. Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 242-6. A fine copy in bright, very good dust jacket with shelf wear at spine ends and corner tips with shallow loss at upper spine end and upper corner tips, small abrasion to spine panel just below "WAVE," and dust soiling to rear panel. Overall, an attractive copy of a book that is quite scarce in superior condition. (#146080) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Moonraker - Very Rare 1st w/High Grade original Dust Jacket

MacMillan 1955 - IAN FLEMING - MOONRAKER, published by MacMillan, copyright 1955, First Printing (states "First Printing" on copyright page with no references to subsequent printings - there was never a 2nd printing in this format), lists to "Live and Let Die" on list of Fleming books to left of title page, white endpapers with light green cloth boards and black lettering to spine and front board, $2.75 price on DJ front flap. VERY RARE BOOK - HARDER TO FIND THAN THE 1ST PRINTINGS OF BOTH LIVE AND LET DIE & CASINO ROYALE - EASILY THE RAREST OF ALL U.S. IAN FLEMING 1ST PRINTINGS. Book has flat pages with one creased page corner, very slight dust soiling/age darkening to page edges, no foxing to pages or endpapers or outer page edges, endpapers are clean and free from erasures/soiling, former owner's name to inside front board (covered by DJ front flap), top right corner of ffe has been clipped (either to remove a used bookstore price or remove a former owner's name), otherwise no former owner's markings or used bookseller stamps/stickers inside, no wear to board edges, corners or spine tips, no bumped board corners, NO scotch tape marks or 'black' edging mark (caused by those old style DJ protectors - common defect found with this book) to boards, no discoloration/soiling to boards, no wear to spine or front board lettering. Dust jacket has no tearing, chipping or creasing, almost no wear to spine tips, no wear to front flap crease, virtually no edge wear, no spine fading to spine lettering (either the green title or red publisher's name), very faint stain to left edge on rear panel otherwise no soiling or staining, no dust rubbing to white rear panel, no color tears/color rubbing, no scotch tape marks to flaps, faint foxing to edges of flaps. Overall a FINE-/N-FINE book in FINE- condition dust jacket (not price clipped) of an Ian Fleming U.S. 1st printing rare hardcover book. While the last 4 Ian Fleming James Bond books are very common in the U.S. trade printing state, all of the U.S. Fleming books before On Her Majesty's Secret Service are quite scarce as the U.S. print runs were very very small (in comparison to the U.K. print runs) as the "bond mania" craze had not really hit the U.S. until after the release of Dr. No in the movie theatres in late 1962. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Ian Fleming James Bond 1st printing hardcover appearances up for sale. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
