Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) discussing theology and the arts

1955. Dated October 25, 1955, on Magdalene College stationary. A single sheet, written on two sides, with the original mailing envelope, addressed in the author's hand. "Dear Mr. Middleton, Thank you for your kind and encouraging letter. I am distressed you should have thought for a moment that I affirmed "a time when the Holy Ghost was not" The Blessed Trinity, as the Persons within it and their relations are of course eternal. But there was (as we know from scripture) a time before the Holy Ghost was "given" to us. In the same way, though the Son is from everlasting, St. Paul speaks of this being "born in us" in time. It is possible that the continued temporal reiteration within us of the timeless operations within the Deity is precisely the mode in which to us eternity is reflected? I see what you mean by saying "our point of conscious contact with God is at Jesus, this point of real contact is at the Holy Ghost," but one would like to avoid the implication that the conscious contact is not real. I'd [summarize?] "We move to God in Christ, we move with God in the Spirit." We are both seemingly, of the same type - the type to whom God speaks through beauty both natural and artistic. One must then never for a moment forget the believers, often far further on the way, with whom He has dealt quite otherwise. The arts, I should say, were not false gods, nor true gods. I'd say of them as D. de Rougemont says of (erotic) love 'it ceases to be a demon when it ceases to be a god.' The modern cultured world makes a sort of religion of the arts, with fatal results not only for religion but for the arts themselves. There's some good devotional poetry in the work of Ruth Pitter. I have written a fair amount of verse, but I doubt if it is so good. Yours very sincerely, C. S. Lewis" A fascinating and hitherto unknown letter by Lewis, not collected in "The Letters of C.S. Lewis," edited by W.H. Lewis (1987).

Twelfth Night: 10 Original Costume Designs with Swatches of Cloth

Germany/ Czechia: Unpublished, 1955 Book. Fine. No Binding. 1st Edition. A collection of ten original costume designs on 7 leaves of costumes for a 1950s production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night by the German artist and designer, Ellen Carola Carstens. The colourful designs are accomplished in pen and watercolour with small swatches of cloth tipped onto the sheets for guidance to the wardrobe makers. The designs are on thick creamy yellow paper, mounted on black cardboard (17×24cm to 24×28cm). Each design is contained within a round-cornered pencilled box and each is annotated in pen with the character's name and sometimes in pencil with further names, some slightly Slavonic, that may refer to the actors involved in the production. The designs are for: 'Viola Sebastian', 'Tabia' (Sir Toby Belch), a pair of lavish female costumes, probably Olivia, 'Pagen' (likely Valentine and Curio), 'Nann' (apparently Feste), 'Orsino', 'Malvolio', two images - the second cross-gartered. Ellen Carola Carstens worked for the Badisches Staats-theater in Karlsruhe in the 1950s and created costumes for the Operafilm of Weber's Der Freischütz by the Hamburg Staast-oper in 1968. We've not been able to locate this production of Twelfth Night but the Slavonic tinge to the actors' names, particularly 'Horak' for Feste, suggest a Czech rather than German production of the play - Miroslav Horak played Malvolio in a production of the play in Zlin in 1952. Sets of costume designs of this kind are most uncommon in trade. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book..

Four original costume designs for the film "Artists and Models" done by Edith Head (Original artwork for the 1955 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount, 1955. Four original costume designs intended for Jerry Lewis's character in the 1955 film "Artists and Models," with holograph notations and illustrations painted by costume designer Edith Head. The illustrations largely feature simple shirt-and-pants combinations. One, a white t-shirt and nerdily rolled-up blue jeans, features a silk scarf belt next to which Head has emphatically written "NO!" A later film of the popular Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis duo, "Artists and Models" depicts comic book writer Martin stealing ideas his kooky roommate comes up with in his dreams, while the pair simultaneously attempt to woo their very attractive neighbors. Unarguably the most famous costume designer in the history of cinema, Edith Head was known for her work with director Alfred Hitchcock, and for extensively consulting with leading actresses, becoming highly sought after as a result. Head was nominated for thirty five Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, winning eight. She still holds the record for the largest number of Academy Awards won by any woman. 15 x 20 inches, pencil and gouache on illustration board. Near Fine, with the occasional toning, soil, or bumped corner. Hirschhorn, p. 349.

        The Less Deceived

The Marvell Press, Hessel 1955 - First edition, first issue - one of 300 copies bound from a total impression of 700. This copy bound with a flat spine - a point on which Barry Bloomfield's description of A6 appears to contradict itself: he notes that "A later binding has no strip of stiffening mull inserted" but also that "The early copies . . are bound with flat spines". I have seen copies of the stated "second edition" (that is, in fact, the second issue of the first impression, being the 400 copies bound after the first 300 had been sold) with both flat and rounded spines. While I'm at it, another dodgy or misunderstood point is that only the 120 subscribers' copies have the list of subscribers at the rear - it appears to be common to the whole impression. Contemporary owner's presentation inscription to front free endpaper else an excellent copy in dustwrapper very slightly faded at spine and with miniscule loss to lower corners of fore-edge.       1955 - VERLAINE, Paul. Oeuvres Poétiques Complètes. (Paris): Editions Vialetay, (1955-56). Five volumes. Octavo, original full dark green morocco, top edges gilt, uncut. $1600.Limited edition of Verlaine's complete poems illustrated with original color lithographs by French artists Vertès, Gaston Barret, Georges de Sainte-Croix, Valentine Hugo, and Simon Goldberg, number 762 of 2500 sets printed on Rives and bound in morocco.Verlaine was associated first with the French Décadents, and then with the early Symbolists. Best known for his influence upon and his affair with poet Arthur Rimbaud, he nevertheless "wrote some of the finest and most musical lyrics in the French language". [and] had a considerable influence on French prosody. He did not countenance all the Symbolist innovations, such as le vers libre, but chose at most to employ the freed alexandrine" (Harvey & Heseltine, 738-39). Each volume contains 12 original color lithographs by one of the contributing artists: Vertès (Volume I), Gaston Barret (II), Georges de Sainte-Croix (III), Valentine Hugo (IV), and Simon Goldberg (V).         Autograph letter signed

1955 - PORTER, Cole. Autograph letter signed. Bussaco, Portugal: April 17, 1955. One octavo leaf of Palace Hotel stationery (5-1/2 by 8 inches), writing on recto and verso. WITH: GUBERT, José Ensesa. Typed letter signed (to Cole Porter). Barcelona: March 30, 1955. One quarto leaf of stationery (8-1/2 by 11 inches), typing on recto only. $2200.Autograph letter signed by Cole Porter, praising the lack of rain during his travels, expressing pleasure that the recipient likes her new office and complimenting his travel companion."The least imitable songwriter of America's golden years of popular song, and in many ways the least 'American,' Cole Porter". epitomized 'sophistication' during decades when that commodity was in shortest supply" (ANB). Porter's letter, on stationery from the Palace Hotel in Bussaco, Portugal, reads, in full: "Sun., April 17, 55. Dear Mrs. S "" up here to see some treasures we missed before we went to Lisbon. Please get book & keep for me, Napoleon III by Albert Guerard, pub. Knopf. Since I hit Milan we have had only one-half day of rain & that was on the day I hit Milan. I can't tell you how happy I am that you like your new office so much. All well "" Paul is a wonderful traveller. He has such fun with my 39 bags. Best, C.P." "Paul" is certainly a reference to "Cole's faithful valet, Paul Sylvain. "After a near-fatal riding accident on Long Island in 1937, in which a frightened horse rolled on him and crushed both his legs, the permanently lamed Porter had to be carried virtually everywhere by his valet Paul Sylvain" (The New Republic). Sylvain died in July 1959; "in appreciation of Sylvain's long and zealous service, Cole subsequently set up a $75,000 trust fund in his will to assist Sylvain's two young daughters" (Schwartz, Cole Porter, 264). Accompanied by a typed letter signed by José Ensesa Gubert to Porter, at the bottom of which Porter has written, "Show me this when I return, please." Gubert established the upscale s'Agaró resort on the Costa Brava in Catalonia in the early 1920s; in addition to Porter, it attracted such celebrities as Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Gubert's letter concerns several records of traditional Catalonian melodies (sardanes) he sent the composer. Book title in Porter letter underline in blue pencil. Later marginal annotation, "Cole's hand" with arrow, to Gubert letter.Old fold lines to both letters. Faint creases, tiny closed tears to edge of Porter letter; old marginal tape residue to Gubert letter. Fine condition and suitable for framing. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Moonraker.

London: Jonathan Cape. 1955.. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.256. This is the scarce variant on the thin paper stock with 'shoo' for 'shoot' printed to p.10. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards, titled in silver, in 'flame' design dust-wrapper by Kenneth Lewis. The paper stock is toned as expected (this state 'prone to browning' - Gilbert p.95), otherwise contents and binding are near fine, with a small bump to the upper corner. The dust-jacket is a little edgeworn else near fine, exhibiting the usual condition issues inherent with this title; 'the panels are prone to browning and the bright colours suffer from fading' (p.96). A pleasing copy of a rare variant. The 'shoo' version accounts for "as few as one in five copies of the first impression". A true Bond highlight.

1955 - HUGHES, Langston and DECARAVA, Roy. The Sweet Flypaper of Life. (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955). Small octavo, original photographic and textual paper wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $1750.First edition of this landmark collaboration between Hughes and DeCarava, the preferred softcover edition, containing Hughes' lyrical text and 141 engaging photogravures by DeCarava.Guggenheim Award-winner Roy DeCarava is considered "the spiritual 'father' of much contemporary African American photography" (New York Times). Langston Hughes, already "acknowledged as the most influential black writer of his generation, and as one of the greatest American poets of all time here composed a fictional story to accompany DeCarava's images, creating a lyrical tale about imaginary characters to go with photographs of real people" (Roth, 138). "An important step forward" in the history of photobooks, Sweet Flypaper of Life proved especially significant in its "design, featuring a pacy, cinematic style. It is also a book that had more impact in its cheaper paperback edition, since, radically, Hughes' text begins on the cover" (Parr & Badger II:242). "The book won two awards, received critical acclaim in The New York Times Book Review". sold out its first edition, and was reprinted many times. It is one of the most successful collaborations between a great writer and a great photographer ever published" (Roth, 138). Scarce preferred first softcover edition with text beginning on front wrapper, text block on page 3; published the same year as the first cloth edition. "First Printing" stated on copyright page. Open Book, 160. Two small bookseller inkstamps at rear.Only lightest toning to spine. A fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
