Settle is the author of the highly-acclaimed Beulah quintet, which is considered one of the finest sets of American historical novels ever written, and she also won the National Book Award for her novel Blood Ties. A very fragile proof, retaining wartime production standards: the front cover is printed on the verso of a Richard Aldington cover, a not-uncommon cost-saving phenomenon in post-war British publishing. Cocked, with small chip to upper rear corner; spine-tanned and covers beginning to separate there. Reviewer name (noted author and critic Oswell Blakeston) and address front cover. All told, a very good copy struggling to remain so. Rare. The first edition itself is scarce; we've never seen another proof copy. First Edition. Softcover.

Archival ink jet print, image measuring 10 inches by 10 inches, paper size 11 by 14. #1 of 2 in the Artist's Edition, identified as such in the photographer's hand and signed by her on the reverse. Original printed in 1954, reprinted in this format in 2012. Fine; no flaws. From a portrait session with Bettie Page, which is shown on the front pastedown and front free endpaper of 'Bunny Yeager's Darkroom' (Rizzoli; New York; 2012) and is reproduced as a stand-alone image on page 80 of that title as well. There are few if any comparable associations in contemporary American art between artist and model as is the one between Bunny Yeager and Bettie Page. A beautiful, somewhat mysterious and deeply resonant image.

Furthermore, Brigadier Carver took part not only in all the desert operations but also in those of the Italian campaign with which the Regiment was concerned. He therefore writes from great personal knowledge and first-hand experience … " (Preface).

        The Long Goodbye

      Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1954 - 316 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") Bound in publisher's half blue cloth with green edges with black lettering to spine and cover. (Bruccoli A10.1.b.) First American edition, first printing. The English edition preceded the American by a few months. The Long Goodbye is a 1953 novel by Raymond Chandler, centered on his famous detective Philip Marlowe. While some critics consider it inferior to The Big Sleep or Farewell, My Lovely, others rank it as the best of his work. Chandler himself, in a letter to a friend, called the novel "my best book" and recalled the agony of writing it while his wife was terminally ill. The novel is notable for using hard-boiled detective fiction as a vehicle for social criticism, as well as for including autobiographical elements from Chandler's life. In 1955, the novel received the Edgar Award for Best Novel. The Long Goodbye is Chandler's most personal novel. He wrote it as his wife was dying and her illness and eventual death had a profound effect on him, driving him into fits of melancholy as well as talk of and even attempts at suicide. The novel contains two characters obviously based on Chandler himself and both of them highlight Chandler's awareness of his own flaws such as alcoholism as well as his insecurities (e.g., in the value of his writing). The most obvious Chandler substitute is the usually drunken author Roger Wade. Like Chandler, Wade had a string of successful novels behind him but as he got older he found it more difficult to write. Also, like Chandler, Wade's novels (romantic fiction) were viewed by many as not real literature and Wade obviously has the desire to be thought of as a serious author. Wade also stands in for Chandler in discussions about literature, e.g., praising F. Scott Fitzgerald. The other Chandler stand-in was Terry Lennox. Lennox was also an alcoholic. Also, like Chandler he had been in a war and the war had left emotional scars. In Lennox's case it was the Second World War; in Chandler's case it was the first. Lennox was a Canadian citizen but he had spent a great deal of time in England and retained the more restrained and formal attitude of an English gentleman. This made him somewhat of an anomaly in the fast paced and more informal world of wealthy Los Angeles that he inhabited due to his wife's money. Chandler was also raised in England and received a classical education there. Chandler also retained a great love for the English and what he viewed as their more civilized way of life compared to the shallowness and superficiality of Los Angeles. This frequently put him at odds with screen writing collaborators such as Billy Wilder as well as with most of Los Angeles and Hollywood society. Condition: Light rubbing to spine ends, small clip to front end paper, corners gently bumped and lightly rubbed. jacket restored by Octavaye Studios. The play firmly established Beckett's reputation, although acclaim was slow to follow. It took theatre critic Harold Hobson to begin to stem the tide of negative criticism; he urged that everyone "Go and see Waiting for Godot. At the worst you will discover a curiosity, a four-leaved clover, a black tulip; at the best something that will securely lodge in a corner of your mind for as long as you live" (Bair, Deirdre, Samuel Beckett: A Biography. New York: Summit, 1990, p. 454). Ad 1: True First Edition. Beckett's Waiting for Godot, a milestone in a long productive career, this play has become the symbol of the "Theater of the Absurd." A fine copy. Ad 2: First Illustrated Edition of Godot. This volume exactly reproduces the 1952 "Editions de Minuit" first edition but includes for the first time 4 pages of black and white photographs of the original cast performing Godot at the Théâtre de Babylone. Short tear to page 54, else a fine copy. Ad 3: The playbill for the original French production of Godot at the Théâtre de Babylone, a diminutive theater in Paris. With photos of the first actors to perform in Godot, i.e., Julien Verdier, Lucien Raimbourg and Pierer Latour. The play opened on January 5th, 1953, and ran for over 300 performances. Ad 4: First Edition in English, Presentation Copy, inscribed by Samuel Beckett: "For Jack affectionately from Sam 20.11.87!" The recipient of this copy was the actor / director Jack Garfein (b. 1930 in Mukaccvo, Czechoslovakia); young Garfein survived a stay in the Auschwitz concentration camp during WWII. In 1945, he emigrated to the U.S. and studied at the New School for Social Research before going into the theater. Garfein was the primary force behind The Actors and Directors Lab in both Los Angeles and New York, as well as the artistic director of The Harold Clurman Theatre in New York. He staged productions of Beckett's works, including an Alan Schneider directed triple-bill of "Ohio Impromptu" - "Catastrophe" - "What Were" in 1983, and a series of works by Beckett at New York's Samuel Beckett Theater. Dustjacket with light wear to top extremities, spine ever so slightly darkened. Presentation copies of any edition of Waiting for Godot are now very rare on the market. Ad 5: Original playbill from the first New York production of Godot. The cast included Bert Lahr, E.G. Marshall, and the chimerical Luchino Solito de Solis. Good condition, light dampstain to covers. Ad 6: First English Edition. With publisher's note tipped-in announcing that "When Waiting for Godot was transferred from the Arts Theatre to the Criterion Theatre, a small number of textual deletions were made to satisfy the requirements of the Lord Chamberlain. The text printed here is that used in the Criterion Theatre production". Dustjacket with light fading to spine, one short tear closed, a few miniscule signs of wear to spine extremities. Ad 7: Later Edition of the Faber and Faber London printing. Presentation Copy from Beckett to George Hall "with all best wishes Samuel Beckett 29.11.83." Presumably the recipient was the Broadway actor, George Hall (1916- 2002), who was a theater, TV, and movie actor, best remembered by his role as the elderly Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones in the TV series "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" (1992). His Broadway debut was in 1946. Fine copy. Ad 8: Playbill for the infamous Criterion Production which when Godot was transferred from the Arts Theatre to the Criterion Theatre, a number of textual deletions were made to satisfy the requirements of the Lord Chamberlain. The complete text was not performed in England for another nine years. Ad 9: Playbill for the acclaimed National Theater production of Godot with John Alderton as Estragon, Alec McCowen as Vladimir and Terence Rigby as Pozzo. This production used Beckett's revised text, based on his 1975 Schiller-Theater production, and the program reproduces three pages from his production notebook, along with a few photographs of the author and actors. Includes extracts from Michael Rudman's visit with Beckett in Paris in 1987, as well as extracts from the original reviews by Norman Mailer, Tennessee Williams, Clive Barnes et al. A fine copy.       1954 - The typed letter is written from the 46th Street Theatre where Hepburn and her future husband, Mel Ferrer, were appearing in "Ondine".       1954 - Mixed media on brown composition board with gum arabic. Signed and dated "Hammond 6 - 8- 54" A beautiful concept for a large, two door luxury car The name and logo on the car are so vague that it is not clear whether this beautifully drawn concept is for the Lincoln Continental or not, but it certainly could be. A long, slightly downward sloping line runs from the headlight to the backlight, similar to the Ford Fairlane, but this a larger, more aggressive car with a long hood that comes to a point over a pointed front bumper. The roof is a small missile-like figure. The chrome back fenders and hubcaps add to the richness, as does the two-tone, cappuccino and brown coloring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

      First Edition, review copy service. Precious autograph dedication signed by the author Maurice Blanchot, "with friendly and very faithful thought ..." Dos and slightly flat and marginally dives and passed. "Three years to a book, five lines for ridicule - and false quotes" The reception of The Stranger by Camus critics was a painful disappointment. In his refuge Panelier, Camus received the "serials" that sends Pascal Pia often disillusioned with some comments on the article as Henriot appeared in Time. "I never doubted qu'Henriot It was a con held to confirm this opinion. " Besides some glowing items Gallimard wishes to emphasize: "The criticism was absurd indeed Yet there was a good article in Arland Coemedia and another equally favorable in the NRF.." But these are articles "Home" and also not necessarily bright "And some reservations that we make with regard to this thought (...) it is important that the position of Mr. Camus is sincere ... "Camus is not fooled:" Criticism: poor free zone, excellent in Paris Finally everything rests on misunderstandings "... So when Pia sends Blanchot's article appeared in the summer of 1942 (and repeated in Misstep in 1943) adds that assessment: "I think it's far, what has been written more smart about your book. " The interest that the two writers are doing is immediate. In the month of August 1942, Camus is sending two novels and Blanchot devotes a paragraph in his diary: "Thomas discovers her death foreshadows the future (...) All lights - but light. dull bathing asphodel mortal experience. " In autumn, Blanchot devotes a lengthy discussion again Sisyphus: "... the book of Mr. Camus deserves to be appreciated a little more than a literary remarkable book." Bound by a mutual admiration, Camus and Blanchot meet regularly to the jury of the Pleiades or committees of the Ark and Gallimard they are both members. Their literary career also sometimes strangely echo like "The Plague" and "Very High", "political allegories based on the imaginary development of an epidemic in the city." Published one year of interval. In 1954, publication of the Summer, Blanchot published several analyzes of the work of Camus, sometimes severe critical reflections, but still doing a careful and thorough reading which reflects the intellectual proximity of the two men. On the death of Camus, Blanchot make him tribute (later included in "Friendship"): "Death struck Camus (...) has made us in a profound part of ourselves, already dying, we felt how happy we were to be [his] contemporary and how treacherous this happiness was at once revealed and obscured, even more, as if the power to be contemporaries of ourselves, in which time we belong with [him], suddenly found himself severely impaired.         Living the Good Life [Inscribed in the Year of Publication]

      Harborside: Social Science Institute. (1954). An account of the authors' homestead in Vermont, which they described as a 20-year project in self-subsistent living and subtitled this volume (in part) "How to Live Sanely and Simply in a Troubled World." The Nearings were radical pacifists who essentially "dropped out" of most aspects of contemporary American society after World War II, and set about making their Vermont farm self-sustaining. In the Vietnam War era this book became the Bible of the back-to-the-land movement, and that, in turn, led to the movement toward revitalizing small farms, the "slow food" movement, and the "locavore" phenomenon -- which are pervasive cultural influences in the U.S. and western Europe today. Inscribed by the authors in the year of publication: "To Eva & Hans & their good life in Yonkers/ Helen & Scott/ Oct 12 1954." All written in Helen's hand but for Scott's name, which Scott has written. From what we've been able to discern, Hans [Simons] was Dean of the School of Politics of the New School for Social Research. Foxing to the spine cloth; a very good copy in patterned boards, lacking the dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover.

        Live and Let Die

      London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and roundel to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Contents a little browned couple of small, marginal stains but a very decent copy in the mildly toned dust jacket with a light vertical crease to the lower panel and some trivial rubbing at the tips. First edition, first impression, in the first issue jacket without the design credit slug to the front flap. The earliest dust jackets issued made no mention of Kenneth Lewis and at some point the need was recognised to credit his work. A stamp was made and as a stopgap existing jackets were overstampped beneath the blurb on the front flap. This slightly amateurish solution was swiftly abandoned and the jacket was reset and reprinted to include the Lewis credit. Copies of the first impression exist with all three states though we note that the third state dust jacket may readily be found on reprints and ought therefore be regarded with some suspicion. Copies of the first issue in such condition as the present example are increasingly hard to find.
