Titel fleckig, ansonsten frisches und feines Exemplar. First Edition - Middeldorpf "improved the galvano-cuatry and introduced it in major surgery." The Lord of the Rings, True 1st US Edition 1st Impression Set, with Custom Slipcase

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1954/1955/1956 1st US Editions, 1st impression/1st impression/1st impression, respectively. An exceptional and lovely set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is housed in a custom full burgundy leather clamshell case to show and protect this beautiful set. The case features the Doors of Durin stamped to the triple spined case, along with Tolkien Ring & Eye Device, title and author in Tengwar Script, all stamped in gold to the front panel, the JRRT monogram to the rear. The set is all original cloth with the correct original dustjackets. The Fellowship of the Ring is the true 1st US printing or impression, from the same print run as the UK edition, with the 1954 date to the title page. The book shows a stain at the top of the front panels spine fold area. The dustjacket of the Fellowship of the Ring has a 1" closed tear at the upper rear flap fold area, with a tiny amount of scuffing or loss to the tips of the folds. The dustjacket shows a small amount of soiling, but still presents beautifully. It has the correct issue points with the ascender clipped on the 'd' in 'Frodo' on the tenth line of the blurb on the back flap. The following 'o' is not nicked as is found on later dustjackets. The photo on the back of the dustjacket is cut straight across, not in the 'V' shape found on the 3rd & 4th impressions. Overall Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition. The Two Towers is also the true 1st impression, with the 1955 date to the title page, from the same print run as the UK 1st. The dustjacket shows the 1st printing points of the 'stripe' at the upper and lower edges of the front panel, and the 'notch' in the 'r' of Towers. The notch is only found on the 1st impression dustjacket, where the stripe defect is found on some later printings. The dustjacket has some foxing mainly along the upper portion of the front panel, and the verso. The book and dustjacket are both in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, no names or writing, no offsetting on the endpapers. The map is still attached to the rear pastedown, in Near Fine condition, no tears or extra folds noted. The Return of the King has some soiling and scattered foxing on the dustjacket, mainly to the rear panel. The dustjacket exhibits the correct issue point for the book, including the oversized '5' in the price with double uprights on the Return of the King, and shows no tears or loss along the edges, spine or fold areas. The books are tight and clean without inscriptions or writing. None of the books are price clipped, though the Fellowship is unpriced as issued. Besides being a truly beautiful looking set, this set is very scarce and collectable, with the 1st Two Towers being the scarcest of the original 1st Editions, both US & UK, with only 1000 printed. The original maps are present in all three volumes, no extra folds or tears noted, 1st state maps in the Fellowship and Two Towers with the red dot on the coast of the Havens of Umbar. The Return of the Kings map is the correct 1st impression, with the size being approx. 16.5 X 14 inches, with a 'Borough Mill Bond' watermark, no tears or extra fold noted. Further digital images can be supplied on request. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

        Live and Let Die.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1954. First edition of the second James Bond novel. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket without credit for the jacket design and art, with some light rubbing to the spine. The first edition consisted of 7,500 copies. A very attractive example, scarce in this condition. "Fleming accomplished an extraordinary amount in the history of the thriller. Almost single-handedly, he revived popular interest in the spy novel, spawning legions of imitations, parodies, and critical and fictional reactions Through the immense success of the filmed versions of his books, his character James Bond became the best known fictional personality of his time and Fleming the most famous writer of thrillers since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" (Reilly, 571). The inspiration for these changes came from Fleming's experiences of travel in the U.S. and his knowledge of Jamaica itself, where Live and Let Die was written at Fleming's 'Goldeneye' estate. The novel's innovations were positively noted by The Sunday Times when they wrote "[h]ow wincingly well Mr. Fleming writes." And the Times thought Live and Let Die "is an ingenious affair, full of recondite knowledge and horrific spills and thrills - of slightly sadistic excitements also - though without the simple and bold design of its predecessor."

Pictures from an Institution: A Comedy

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1954. Octavo, original green cloth stamped in blind and gilt, top edge stained red, original unclipped dust jacket. Small dampstain to bottom corner of front board, light rubbing to jacket, spine slightly faded. First edition of poet Randall Jarrell's only novel, a comedy of manners set at a progressive women's college, inspired by his experience teaching at Sarah Lawrence. "Most of the people of Benton would have swallowed a porcupine, if you had dyed its quills and called it Modern Art; they longed for men to be discovered on the moon, so that they could show that they weren't prejudiced towards moon men." The calculating character of Gertrude Johnson, a writer-in-residence on the prowl for material, was widely taken to be a portrait of critic Mary McCarthy. This copy is inscribed by Jarrell to fellow scholar and professor Cleanth Brooks and his wife. One of the most important twentieth-century American critics, Brooks co-founded the Southern Review with Robert Penn Warren. He is best remembered for The Well-Wrought Urn, the key New Critical text on the reading of poetry, and for his pioneering later work on William Faulkner. Both Jarrell and Brooks were graduates of Vanderbilt, and influential teachers of poetry, although their interpretive approaches differed: as professors, they were well acquainted with the academic politics satirized in Pictures from an Institution. A near-fine copy, with an excellent literary association.

        Survival Through Design

Tan and brown cloth with brown spine lettering. ix, 384pp. Very good. Spine lightly rubbed. A tight and lovely first edition handsomely signed and inscribed in brown ink in the author's wonderfully calligraphic script on the front flyleaf: "To Adlai Stevenson / hope and inspiration / of his countrymen / Cordially / Richard Neutra / 54." Neutra (1892-1970) was an Austrian-born architect hugely influential in modern architecture, and recipient Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65) was the Illinois governor who twice ran unsuccessfully for president (1952, 1956) against unbeatable WW2 hero Dwight D. Eisenhower. "Egghead" Stevenson was famed for attracting intelligentsia, academics and Hollywood elite to his campaigns, so it's not surprising that an intellectual architect such as Neutra would be drawn to Stevenson's liberal platform. Above Neutra's inscription appears Stevenson rubberstamped ownership signature.

        Lord of the Flies.

"A collection of modern fiction would never be complete without it" (Connolly, 136). Originally published in 1954, The Lord of the Flies was named to Modern Library?'s 100 Greatest Novels List of the twentieth century. "[T]his brilliant work is a frightening parody on man's return (in a few weeks) to that state of darkness from which it took him thousands of years to emerge. Fully to succeed, a fantasy must approach very close to reality. Lord of the Flies does. It must also be superbly written. It is" (The New York Times Book Review).

Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "p. 145, misquotation, p.282, a careless error. W. Somerset Maugham, for Robert Partridge. Nov. 15, 1955. In London." Maugham has marked the offending passages: The misquotation on p. 145 from Hamlet ("What's he to Hecuba, or Hecuba to him?") should in fact read "What is Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba?"; the careless error on p. 282 refers to the flow of the Rhône, which is inverted in the book and wrongly described as flowing from the city of Geneva to meet Lake Leman. The book was first published in the US in 1948, under the title Great Novelists and their Novels; these essays were written as introductions to a reissue of the ten novels by the publishers John C. Winston Company.

The Lord of the Rings, True 1st US Edition 1st Impression Set, with Custom Slipcase

Paris: Plon, 1954. Fine. Plon, Paris 1954-1959, 14,5x23cm, 3 volumes brochés. - Edition, one of the numbered copies on Alfa paper for each copy. autograph dedication of the author signed autograph of Charles De Gaulle to Jean-Bernard Badaire ... in memory of the great trials ... "on the first volume. Pale clear wetting at the feet of the back of three volumes, a slight hitch minor head back in the second volume.

        Live and Let Die.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and roundel to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, contents lightly toned, small stain to foot of spine. An excellent copy in the toned jacket with rubbed and nicked extremities and minor loss to spine ends, not affecting text. First edition, first impression, in the first issue jacket without the design credit slug to the front flap. The earliest dust jackets issued made no mention of Kenneth Lewis and at some point the need was recognised to credit his work. A stamp was made and as a stopgap existing jackets were overstamped beneath the blurb on the front flap. This slightly amateurish solution was swiftly abandoned and the jacket was reset and reprinted to include the Lewis credit. Copies of the first impression exist with all three states though we note that the third state dust jacket may readily be found on reprints and ought therefore be regarded with some suspicion.
