1954 4- Page Letter Signed By Paul Strand: Production and Design of 'Un Paese,' Photo-Book Collaboration with Cesare Zavattini, (with) a Very Detailed 1955 3-Page Follow-up Letter on that Project & Other Topics

Not Published, Orgeval France 1954 - The letters give much background to the creative process of Strand and were written to the designer-artist couple William Golden & Cipe Pineles, (here addressed as 'Bill & Cipe') who were friends and professional colleagues, extending back to their collaborations as participants in the Group Theater in New York, in the 1930s. Paul Strand (1890 -1976) American photo-artist Strand and his fellow-photographer wife Hazel (Kingsbury) took up residence in Orgeval France, after moving to Europe in 1950, " driven into self-exile, Strand later would suggest, by the repressive anti-Communist climate in America (after publishing) La France de Profil (1952), a portrait of postwar, small-town French life Strand would spend the rest of his life assembling and completing similar book portraits celebrating primarily rural cultures " (as Un Paese & others) " Many established photographers, from Walker Evans to Eliot Porter have admitted to having been strongly influenced by Strand's impeccably rich and detailed prints, concern for formal relationships, respect for his subjects, and ability to distill the essence of his subjects. However, through much of the 1950s and 1960s his reputation fell into eclipse. His dedication to view cameras and fine printing, his largely frontal compositions, and his devotion to creating politically motivated celebrations of traditional, largely rural cultures did not fit an artistic world fascinated with the hand camera and the constant change of contemporary life. By the late 1960s, however, Strand received renewed acclaim first through European exhibitions and then by means of a retrospective exhibition sponsored by the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1971)." (John B. Rohrbach in the ANB) Cipe Pineles (1908 - 1991) Austrian-born American graphic designer & art director, associated with Conde Nast Vogue & others; William Golden (1911 - 1959) American graphic designer, especially noted for his work at CBS. Letter 1: Four handwritten pages with very good content throughout; dated May 10, 1954, just prior to the publishing of "Un Paese," the Italian-produced photograph & text collaboration between photographer Paul Strand and neo-realist screenwriter Cesare Zavattini. Written in blue ink on airmail paper: " just back from Milan with very good news. The book is finished and accepted by Einaudi, one of the best and biggest publishers in Italy. Zavattini has written a fine and moving text, very direct, very simple this outcome after months of nothing happening made us both feel pretty good. Printing is going to be done by Pizzi in Milan one of the best around for gravure. We had one conference and find that the nephew of the boss speaks English and seems both intelligent and cooperative. Won't be any problem of putting my finger in the pie, I think. We have to be back in Milan on the 20th with the negatives and Pizzi offered to make a few quick tests for us to see. Einaudi is being very flexible as to size and format, cover etc. They seem to want to do a good job and one that doesn't look like the present rash of photo book. I mentioned that my good friend Golden might take a crack at the cover and they were only too pleased. We decided on a slightly larger page size than La France de Profil, both to get away from the standard thinking and also to give more space for text. Size we chose was 23 x 29 cms. Naturally the cover will be a little larger. I would say add about 3mm for the cover size, length & width. The title so far chosen is "Un Paese." In Italian this has the double meaning of a village and the whole country. This is Zavattini's title and we think it is good - Simple and excites curiosity by not being too explicit. As for other printing on the cover - Cesare Zavattini and Paul Strand. He is a big name in Italy and I have the feeling that both names can be larger and more effective than in "La France de Profil." Lastly this publisher usually puts his own name, Einaudi, on the cover, not too conspicuously. Now a [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        The Lord of the Rings

London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954 Three volumes. Folding map in each volume. Return of the King is second state with sig. 4 and slipped type on p. 49 (this was formerly Hammond's first state, but the bibliographer has revised his opinion). Original red cloth and printed dust jackets. Bookplate. Fine in very good fine dust jackets with slight wear, minor stains, tanning to the spines. An attractive set. FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS. This is a very attractive set of the celebrated Lord of the Rings trilogy. The size of the edition was small: The Fellowship of the Ring (3000 copies), The Two Towers (3250 copies), and The Return of the King (7000 copies). Tolkien worked on this epic, not so much a trilogy as a long novel, from the publication of The Hobbit (1937) until the early 1950s. Beginning with the appearance of the second edition of 1966 and the nearly simultaneous appearance of the paperback edition in America, The Lord of the Rings became one of the best-selling works of fiction of the century. This is the "paradigmatic work of modern heroic fantasy. . . . Its success was not immediate, but its publication in paperback was an event sufficiently momentous to transform completely the market situation of heroic fantasy, and hence bring about a new era in its history. The Lord of the Rings made fantasy a significant publishing category and inspired a deluge of new works. The astonishing reception and influence of this work qualify it as one of the most remarkable literary phenomena of the 20th century" (Barron, ed., Fantasy Literature).

        Maria

New York: Salamander Editions, [1954]. 4to (5½ x 4¼ inches). Engraved vignette, small color image of the Manhattan skyline mounted on last page; original blue tissue preserved. Stapled in original printed wrappers. A virtually untouched example. Provenance: Sylvia Pedlar (1900-1972), American fashion designer. A SUPERB COPY OF CORNELL'S SCARCE ARTIST'S BOOK, printed in an edition of 100 copies, this one of those with an original image Cornell mounted in personalized copies, and accompanied by a letter presenting the pamphlet to American fashion designer Sylvia Pedlar (1902-1982). [With:] CORNELL, Joseph. Typed letter signed ("Joseph Cornell") to Sylvia Pedlar, 3708 Utopia Parkway, Flushing, NY, 27 May 1956. One page, 4to, on Valley Onion Skin. Reading: "Long before the EGAN GALLERY suspended operation I have thought back to the pleasant occasion of meeting you there with Mr. [Bradley Walker] Tomlin. It is hard to take, - the news of his passing. Enclosed something more nostalgic than the WEATHER PROPHET [his 1954 assemblage], a little private printing of an aspect of 'exploration' which I hope to have more news of one of these days." Cornell had his first show at the Charles Egan Gallery in 1949. By 1956, when Cornell presented this book, Sylvia Pedlar was a leading designer of lingerie, having studied at Cooper Union and the Art, Students League. She launched her business, Iris Lingerie, in 1929. Though she hated the term, she is credited with creating the super short "baby doll" nighties - a clever response to the fabric shortage during the Second World War. She is also known for adapting the Roman toga to the American nightgown. Cornell refers to the New York Abstract Expressionist Bradley Walker Tomlin, who had died in May 1953 having had a heart attack after visiting Jackson Pollack in Long Island. 'Maria', an appropriated text translated by Cornell from Elise Polko's original prose-poem, reflects Cornell's obsession with opera, and with Maria Malibran in particular. A cache of the pamphlets were found in Cornell's estate after his death, all lacking the blue tissue guard and the mounted image at end. This early example is among those Cornell specially personalized for notable friends. Lynda Roscoe Hartigan proposes that Cornell turned to other creative activities in the 1950s due to his ambivalent attitude towards his constructions. He was periodically expanding his 'Portrait of Ondine, GC44' from 1951 on, filling it with printed matter, notes, and excerpts in the manner of Duchamp's Valises. He published 'Maria' and 'Bel Canto Pet' (1955) at his own expense, in the manner of the French feuilletons (see Hartigan, "Joseph Cornell: A Biography" in 'Joseph Cornell,' ed. Kynaston McShine, New York: MOMA, 1980, pp. 108-109).

        Vivien Leigh

April 26, 1954. Their signatures, <i><b>"Vivien Leigh"</i></b>, <i><b>"L Olivier"</i></b>, beside their images on the inside of a program for the 1953 play, <i>The Sleeping Prince</i> at the Phoenix Theatre in London. Front cover partly separated from spine, usual folds, small loss to lower margin of cover, minor soiling, else very good condition.<br /> <br />In January, 1953 while filming <i>Elephant Walk</i> with Peter Finch, Leigh suffered a nervous breakdown and returned to England to recover (her role was taken over by Elizabeth Taylor). While convalescing at home in England, and in between periods of incoherence, she admitted to Olivier that she had been having an affair with Finch since 1948. Her infidelity, together with her manic depression, strained her marriage with Oliver and the pair divorced in 1960.<br /> <br />The program is for the first run of Terence Rattigan's 1953 play of a young actress who meets and captivates a prince. The play later appeared on Broadway in 1956 at the Coronet Theatre. Marilyn Monroe purchased the rights to the play and from it produced the 1957 film of the same name with Laurence Olivier reprising his role. In 1963 Noël Coward adapted the story into a musical, <i>The Girl Who Came to Supper</i>.

Housed in a custom clamshell case. This copy inscribed to long-time CBS programming director Harry Ackerman, who was responsible for creating the radio series based on Chandler's iconic private detective, "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe." Meant as a summer replacement for The Bob Hope Show, "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" premiered on NBC Radio on June 17, 1947, initially starring actor Van Heflin as Marlowe; the show ran for two and a half seasons (114 episodes) before being cancelled in 1951. A significant copy; while Chandler was more than sparing when it came to inscribing copies of his books, the present copy was inscribed for someone with whom he had a significant working relationship.
