        CASINO ROYALE

Cape 1953 - First edition. Original black cloth with red heart vignette on upper cover and titles on the spine, in gun metal grey dustwrapper designed by the author. A fine copy in a very near fine dustwrapper which just shows the slightest trace of wear at the head of the spine and a tiny hole to the top edge of the upper panel. Otherwise exceptionally bright and crisp, notably so on the white rear panel. An exceptional copy. The author's first book and the first appearance of James Bond, who has probably had a greater impact on society and popular culture than any other fictitious character since Sherlock Holmes. 4,728 copies of the first impression were printed, although no more than 3000 were issued in the first state dustwrapper, the remainder having a favourable Sunday Times review overprinted on the front flap. A significant proportion of the first printing would have been sold to libraries and the remainder were well read, making well preserved copies ever more uncommon. "Ian Fleming has discovered the secret of narrative art. the reader has to go on reading" - John Betjeman (review in The Daily Telegraph). Gilbert A1a(1.1) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Faster Than Thought.

London: Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, Ltd.,, 1953. A Symposium on Digital Computing Machines. Octavo. Original cream cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Photographic frontispiece of Ada Lovelace, 13 plates, and 2 folding tables. Spine ends and corners lightly bumped, otherwise a bright and fresh copy in the nicked dust jacket with a few closed tears to extremities, spine sunned, and some loss to upper spine. First edition, first impression, of "the most widely read early English introduction to electronic computing" (Origins of Cyberspace), a collection of 24 essays by leading experts in the field, including a chapter on computer chess that was one of Alan Turing's final published pieces. The author, Bertram Vivian Bowden (1910–1989) was educated as a physicist at Cambridge before joining the Ministry of Defence Telecommunications Research Establishment where, during the Second World War, he investigated radar and made advances that remained vital to the industry more than twenty years later. Between 1950 and 1953 he worked for the Ferranti corporation, a computer company that specialised in machines for defense and electrical systems, and which introduced the first commercially available computer, the Ferranti Mark I, in 1951. Bowden "was particularly effective in explaining, with uncanny prescience, the dramatic effect that the digital computer was destined to have" (ODNB). In the preface he describes some of the tasks, such as engineering calculations, that computers will soon take over from humans, and writes, "It seems probable that we shall have a second Industrial Revolution on our hands before long… In the next revolution machines may replace mens' brains and relieve them of much of the drudgery and boredom which is now the lot of so many white collar workers". His thoughts on this future were collected in the present volume, together with pieces on the history of computing and case studies of contemporary "computing machines" in Britain and America. The extensive section on future applications for computers includes articles on crystallography, meteorology, ballistics, engineering, government calculations, business and commerce, astronomy, and games.

WORLD GEOGRAPHIC ATLAS: A COMPOSITE OF MAN'S ENVIRONMENT

(BAYER, HERBERT). Bayer, Herbert, Editor and Designer. WORLD GEOGRAPHIC ATLAS: A COMPOSITE OF MAN'S ENVIRONMENT. Chicago: The Container Corporation of America, 1953. First Edition. Folio. Gilt-Embossed Burlap. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. 368pp, profusely illustrated in color, foredge gilt. A classic example of twentieth century Modernist book design, the "World Geographic Atlas" was published by the Container Corporation of America in 1953 to commemorate their twenty-fifth anniversary. Issued hors commerce as a keepsake, this exquisite item was never made commercially available. Its graphs, charts and maps designed by CCA art director Herbert Bayer and his associates are still visually arresting over fifty years later. A handsome example of this lovely book itself whose gilt foredge and cover debossing are still bright. The cream colored burlap covers show some very light soiling and discoloration, while the textblock and binding are tight and without any notable flaws. Its fragile, increasingly uncommon printed cardboard slipcase is present and intact, though scratched and heavily worn and abraded (especially along the extremities) with some attendant paper loss at the joints. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.
