Kinsey Reports] Sexual Behavior in the Human Female

      W. B. Saunders, Philadelphia 1953 - First Printing of this landmark work on human sexuality. Thick, tall 8vo: xxx,841[1]pp, with numerous charts, graphs, tables, and figures in the text. Publisher's maroon cloth, upper cover blocked in black and navy blue, spine stamped in gilt, yellow typographic dust jacket printed in black and priced $8.00 on rear flap. A stunning, virtually pristine example, in a vibrant, unfaded jacket. Garrison-Morton 7038. Kinsey and his colleagues at the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University based their study on personal interviews with approximately 6,000 women. The data were analyzed for the frequency with which women participate in various types of sexual activity, and Kinsey and his colleagues considered how such factors as age, social-economic status, and religious adherence influenced sexual behavior. The evidence suggested that women were less sexually active than men, but many of the study's other conclusions were immediately controversial, causing shock and outrage, both because they challenged conventional beliefs about sexuality and because they discussed subjects considered taboo. The Kinsey Reports together (this one was preceded by Sexual Behavior in the Human Male) sold three-quarters of a million copies and were translated into thirteen languages, making them among the most successful and influential scientific books of the twentieth century.         TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS)

22 December 1953, London - One-page letter on both sides of Faber & Faber stationery SIGNED by the poet. Addressed to Anne Munro-Kerr of London's League of Dramatists. In part: "I am not quite clear, I am afraid, as to how we have been dealing with productions of my plays in the French translation, outside of France itself--that is to say, in Brussels and Geneva. I excepted France in my arrangements with you for the reason that Monsieur Henri Fluchere, the translator, who had taken the whole initiative in getting the successful production of MEURTRE DANS LA CATHEDRALE in 1945, likes to deal with these matters himself, as he has theatrical connections and also considerable financial interest in the success of my plays in his translation, he has seemed wholly competent to do so. He would like, however, to make his responsibility inclusive--that is to say, have the four plays that he has translated whenever they are produced in French . and I am prepared to sign an agreement to that effect. This will not, of course, have any retroactive value for any of the productions previously in Brussels or Geneva that have been arraigned by yourselves." The letter is 6-1/2" x 7-1/2" and is double-matted with a portrait and framed to an overall size of 18-1/2" x 14-1/2". Fluchere was a prominent literary critic and translator, best known for his studies of Shakespeare, who served as Eliot's primary French translator. In addition to his plays, Fluchere translated several of Eliot's poems and critical essays; the collaboration was mutually beneficial, with Eliot contributing the foreword to the English version of Fluchere's 1956 scholarly work SHAKESPEARE AND THE ELIZABETHIANS. This letter, in particular, refers to the translation of MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL, which was first performed in 1935. A fabulous letter revealing the worldwide appeal of Eliot's acclaimed literary work. Central vertical and horizontal folds with staple holes to one upper corner. Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Antlitz der Kinder

Zurich: Rosellina or Werner Bischof, c.1953-1960. Some photos detached from their pages, light wear; envelope lightly worn.. Unbound square octavo. Housed in original blue envelope with handwritten title in an unknown hand. Unique prototype for a planned, but unrealized book on the face of childhood. 88 pages, numbered, with thirty-seven gelatin silver prints mounted to sheets beginning at page 25. The first section consists entirely of lovely childlike pencil drawings, probably by Mrs. Bischof; the drawings continue interspersed with the photographs as the maquette unfolds. Some images later appeared in Bischof's posthumous book, Kinder, but in a wholly different format. It is not known definitively if Bischof had a hand in this maquette; more likely it was assembled by his wife, Rosellina, from existing prints, after Bischof's death. Werner Bischof was the first photographer invited to join Magnum alongside its founding members in 1949. Known for his documentation of poor children around the world during and in the aftermath of WWII, Bischof died in 1954 when his car careened off a mountainside in the Andes. Only nine days later, Magnum cofounder Robert Capa was killed in Indochina.

Important Pair of Daguerreotypes: Black Nurse with White Baby and the Child’s Parents

Talbot County, Maryland, 1953 - IDENTIFIED SLAVE AND MASTER DAGUERREOTYPES. Two sixth-plate daguerreotypes, cased together. Left: nurse and child (“Bradford & Ellen Sherwood his nurse”), right: parents (“Jonathan P. Harrison & his wife Caroline Denny Harrison”). White family’s cheeks are hand-tinted and the baby’s dress is hand-colored. Some spots, edges tarnished. A tremendous pair. Jonathan P. Harrison (born 23 December 1829) and his wife Caroline Denny Harrison (born c. 1834) are in one portrait, while their son Bradford (born c. 1853) and his black nurse Ellen Sherwood are in the other. The Harrison family moved from Talbot County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to Texas in the 1850s to pursue ranching and farming opportunities. According to the U.S. Census, in 1860 the family lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, with Jonathan reported as 29 years old, Caroline 26, and Bradford 7, indicating a date of 1853 for this photograph. The Harrisons and Dennys were prominent Maryland and Texas families. Jonathan served with the 1st Texas Cavalry during the Civil War. Identified daguerreotype portraits of slaves are rare, and linked pairs such as this set are very rare. It is conceivable that Ellen Sherwood was a free black, but given the status of the Harrison and Denny families, it seems probable that she was a slave. This splendid pair of photographs vividly demonstrates the complexity of black-white relationships in the antebellum South. Provenance: “Jonathan P. Harrison & his wife Caroline Denny Harrison / Their child Bradford & Ellen Sherwood his nurse,” identified in a manuscript note, beneath the right daguerreotype, in the hand of Jonathan’s niece Patty Belle Tilghman (1851-1931). See Hanson, Old Kent: The Eastern Shore of Maryland, p. 96.

Signed and Inscribed by the author in red felt-tip pen on a large piece of white paper that is NOT a bookplate (instead a piece of letter-sized stationery trimmed to fit) pasted on the book's front pastedown: 'Mar - 1974 For Robert Yaspan - This copy of the regular trade edition of "451" signed by Ray Bradbury.' Mr. Bradbury was of course differentiati ng between the 1st hardback trade edition owned by Mr. Yaspen vs. the asbestos-covered limited edition issued at the same time. The book is bound in red cloth with yellow printing (Curry binding D, no priority). Straight, clean, tight book with no soiling and no handwriting other than the author's in it, with crisp, clean pages, and with just a mere touch of shelfwear to spine ends/corners and 2 small 'very' slightly darkened cloth areas at the bottom edge of the boards. The price intact ($2.50) dustjacket is clean and crisp with some of the usual fading of the red '451' on the spine (though still quite legible), and with some small, shallow edge chips and tears along its edges, primarily at spine ends, upper back edge and flap fold ends, none affecting any dustjacket lettering or the design (less than it looks like in our photos; there's some flash glare from the DJ protector). The dustjacket is entirely original - no restoration. It is now protected by a clear, removable dustjacket cover. The book is housed in a custom red cloth slipcase dating to the Yaspans in the 1970s that is in excellent condition. Very handsome presentation, and excellent provenance! Made into a very good movie in 1966 by Francois Truffaut, starring Julie Christie and Oskar Werner. This book is what really made Mr. Bradbury into a household name.; Signed by Author, 10, 20, 24, NF/VG+

        Tornado Damage Snapshot Albums

Holden, Massachusetts: N.p., 1953. Two of the photographs loose in the album, otherwise near fine. Among the 93 photographs, the albums contain three duplicate prints, and seven images of an unrelated school ceremony.. Possibly unique photo albums. Small oblong octavos, comb-bound. A collection of seven original "Super Pak Snaps" photo albums, each measuring 5 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches, containing a total of 93 black and white, deckle-edged black and white snapshots, bound directly to the plastic comb. An ink-stamped text, found in two of the albums, identifies the contents as "Tornado Damage / Holden, Mass. / June 9, 1953". (A third album lists Worcester, Mass.) The images document the damage of what was one of the deadliest tornados in US history; 94 died, over a thousand were injured, and at least 4000 buildings were destroyed. Though apparently amateur snapshots, the photographs provide an overall typology of destruction and disaster; insurance claim adjustor meets Ed Ruscha.

        The Adventures of Augie March.

The Viking Press, New York 1953 - First edition of Bellow's first National Book Award winning novel. Octavo, original cloth, salmon topstain. Signed by Saul Bellow on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a very good first issue dust jacket. The Adventures of Augie March comes on stage with one of literature's most famous opening lines. "I am an American, Chicago born, and go at things as I have taught myself, free-style, and will make the record in my own way: first to knock, first admitted." Bellow quickly found a receptive audience for his new energetic style. The critic Irving Howe took note of Bellow's "free style" manner, calling it "the first major new style in American prose fiction since those of Hemingway and Faulkner." This novel went on to win the National Book Award for 1954. Both Time magazine and the Modern Library Board named it one of the hundred best novels in the English language.
