        Dada 1916-1923

NY: Sidney Janis Gallery, 1953. Fine. Offset lithograph, 38 inches wide by 25.25 inches high. . A fine example, folded as issued, unfolded once to confirm condition. Schwarz 336. "The Dada catalogue took its place among Duchamp's unique publishing events. Designed as a poster on a 25-by-38-inch sheet of thin, foldable parchment paper, it listed all 212 items and included four short essays by Arp, Tzara, Huelsenbeck and Levesque. These essays were set in blocks of contrasting type running diagonally down the sheet--a text descending a staircase. Duchamp then overprinted the whole page in a bright red-orange, announcing the exhibition with letters that recall original Dada typography. When the painstakingly produced catalogue was finally received, Duchamp has been reported, took a sheet in his hands, crushed it into a loose ball, and suggested that a trash can full of these paper balls be offered to visitors entering the vernissage. Duchamp, characteristically, did not attend the opening." (Caroll Janis, Art in America June-July, 2006). wlb

        Small Archive of Letters

Seven Typed Letters Signed from Clark to Arthur J. Sussel, from 1953 through 1955. The letters, on Clark's Brevard, North Carolina stationery, are near fine with a few small flaws. A small group of interesting and friendly letters between the important naval historian and author Clark, and the Philadelphia antiques dealer and nautical collector Sussel. Clark was an advertising executive but his interest in naval history transformed from a hobby into a second career, and he became the foremost authority on certain aspects of the American Revolution. He was appointed by the U.S. Navy as the first editor of the multi-volume series Naval Documents of the American Revolution. Clark helped Sussel in researching items in his collection, including an important portrait of James Josiah by Charles Willson Peale. The letters are about individual items in the collection and about Clark's own books. Accompanied by a carbon of a letter from Sussel's widow, dated in 1961, to H.F. duPont suggesting that the White House might want to buy Sussel's collection intact for Jacqueline Kennedy's renovation of the White House interior. .

The Desperate Hours (Author's Original Typescript, with numerous corrections)

Random House New York: Random House, 1953. Joseph Hayes' original typed manuscript for his most famous novel, "The Desperate Hours," with numerous authorial typeovers and editorial corrections. Stamps from the James Brown Agency (author's agent), date stamp of Sept 15 1953 and hand notation "Random House New York" to the title page. The book was published by Random House in 1954, and was so popular upon its release that the author rewrote it as both a play and a movie screenplay within a year of publication. Basis for the classic 1955 film noir directed by William Wyler and starring Humphrey Bogart and Arthur Kennedy, a story of home invasion by a group of ruthless prison escapees, that was in some ways the pinnacle of American urban paranoia in the 1950s. Housed in Hayes' original brown file folder, with his personal return label affixed (indicating a home address in Sarasota, Florida), marked in the author's hand: "ORIGINAL MANUSCIPT [sic] 'THE DESP. HRS' AS SUBMITTED TO RANDOM HOUSE." Unbound pages, Very Good condition overall, with title page and last page of text in lesser condition due to bearing most of the wear, but complete with no missing leaves. In a custom quarter-leather clamshell box.

(WWW in American Art, 1999); some wear and soiling, tears to the mount cardstock; one label chipped at corners, still identifiable; artworks very good and giving a glimpse into the artistic process of creating Billings' work on this historic American cruise ship, breaker and holder of Atlantic speed crossing records and currently still afloat - at dock in Philadelphia.. Very Good.

        En attendant Godot

Paris: Les Editions De Minuit. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY BECKETT on the title page; one of the most influential works of modern drama. "Voted the most significant English language play of the 20th century in a British Royal National Theatre poll of 800 playwrights, actors, directors and journalists... Beckett's naked play about two tramps waiting for Godot has tapped into our 20th-century public consciousness. It seems to express our deepest fears and our deepest knowledge of ourselves and our predicament" (Norman Berlin). Notably, the first edition of the text provided the public with their first experience of the complete play-Les Editions de Minuit published it three months before the play's debut (in French) in January 1953. "The first production of Beckett's own English translation, directed by Peter Hall, was staged at the Arts Theatre Club in London in August 1955. Kenneth Tynan's and Harold Hobson's reviews made it into an intellectual hit which has since been regarded as having transformed the British stage" (DNB). Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1952. Octavo, original wrappers; custom half-leather box. Text in French. Some browning and rubbing to spine. Extremely rare signed.

Creature from the Black Lagoon --- in the Rare Dustjacket

London: Dragon Books, No Date (circa 1953-1954 ), 1st Edition, 1st Printing ----------hardcover, blue cloth, Near Fine but there is a thin line of fading along the upper edge of the boards and a small faded spot on the spine where there has been a wee bit of loss on the dustjacket spine, bit of foxing to the endpapers so lets call this a Very Good+ book, the dustjacket is overall a strong Good example ( bordering on a reasonable Very Good ), small bit of loss on spine of dustjacket not affecting any lettering, light overall wear, ---with brilliant cover art depicting the Creature in his cave, carrying an unconscious woman, ---whilst Dracula and Frankenstein heralded the beginning of the great horror movies, by the 1950's horror movies had really degraded to the point where they were being presented as comedies, a la Abbot and Costello meet the Wolfman ---or Dracula ---.or The Mummy, etc. Creature from the Black Lagoon was a successful last ( aqueous ) gasp at the tradition of real horror movies, proving very successful, this movie tie in edition is rare!, reportedly, a paperback version of this book sold for $1000, I expect that I will never see another copy in my bookselling lifetime, the small bookseller's label in the scan is so the scan cannot be copied (easily anyway) and is NOT on the actual dustjacket, Fearn wrote under the following names: Geoffrey Armstrong, Thornton Ayre, Hugo Blayn, Morton Boyce, Hank Carson, Dennis Clive, Hank Cole, Polton Cross, Mark Denholm, Douglas Dodd, Sheridan Drew, Max Elton, Matt Francis, Spike Gordon, Volsted Gridban, Griff, Malcolm Hartley, Conrad G Holt, Preston James, Frank Jones, Nat Karta, Marvin Kayne, Clem Larson, Herbert Lloyd, Paul Lorraine, Astron del Martia, Jed McCloud, Mick McCoy, Jed McNab, Dom Passante, Francis Rose, Laurence F Rose, Ward Ross, Frank Russell, John Russell, Arnold Ryden, Bryan Shaw, John Slate, Vargo Statten, Earl Titan, John Werheim, Ephraim Winiki, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.         Collage Seventeen

Chicago 1953. [Chicago, 1953].. Collage of cut colored wove papers and woven cloth cord, mounted on four layered planes of glass, signed “Marie Zoe Greene” in black ink on the glass at lower right. 600 x 495 mm. (23 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches). Original massive wood frame. An important abstract collage construction in glass and colored paper by Greene-Mercier, one of Moholy-Nagy's first students at the New Bauhaus in Chicago. Dating from 1953, "Collage Seventeen" was one of twenty "polyplane collages," which represent a breakthrough of sorts in her work, and a fascinating chapter in postwar modernist abstraction. The series occupied Greene-Mercier for a decade. On its completion, the complete series was given an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago in March-April 1955, at the invitation of Carl O. Schniewind, in the Department of Prints and Drawings. We quote at length from an article by Lloyd C. Engelbrecht on "Marie-Zoe Greene-Mercier: The Polyplane Collages," which appeared in "Art International" in 1978: "Marie-Zoe Greene-Mercier is best known for her grandly-scaled monumental sculpture, such as the two French Government commissions at Barcarès and Arras. Less well known is a series of collages in which she explored the spatial relationships created by separating paper and other materials by multiple panes of glass, which she has named 'polyplane collages.' "There are twenty of these collages in all, the earliest dating from 1946. The first ten to be completed were exhibited on numerous occasions as individual works, and all twenty were shown as a group in the Art Institute of Chicago in 1955. Although some were shown again as a group in the following two years in the same city, since 1957 only a few have been exhibited, at infrequent intervals. With the patina of time acquired in the last twenty years they now seem to be part of a whole, much like a musical suite in which the individual movements each make their statement, at the same time complementing one another. "Greene-Mercier first turned to collage in 1945, when she made a series of three collages using the 'traditional' methods involving pieces of paper and glue. She soon yielded to the sculptor's fascination with construction in space and began to experiment with panes of glass, which she inserted between the pieces of paper. The twenty collages with panes of glass were the result, and since they followed the three without glass, she numbered them from four to twenty-three. The first two were made with three panes of glass, and the rest with four panes. Paper was pressed, and patterned Japanese paper, burlap, thread, string and rope were used as well. The panes of glass are bound tightly together with tape, and the glass is set flush with the other materials except in those collages in which parts of the glass panes were cut away for the artist by a master glass cutter…. "Each collage makes a statement in the Constructivist idiom, and the forms suspended in orthogonally defined space go back to the origins of Constructivism; Malevich exhibited a black square hovering over a white ground in 1915. What Greene-Mercier has accomplished is to articulate orthogonally defined space in a new way, although employing traditional materials. (She once remarked that she rejected the idea of using plexiglass because she was attracted to the long tradition of glass as a material for artists.)" Born in 1911, Greene-Mercier first came to Chicago in 1933, shortly after graduating from Radcliffe, and was involved in Constructivist art in Chicago from the time of her arrival. In 1934 she assisted James Johnson Sweeney with an exhibition of abstract art at the University of Chicago which included the first showing of paintings by Mondrian in the city. At the New Bauhaus she studied with Archipenko and Gyorgy Kepes, as well as with Moholy-Nagy. One of her polyplane collages, "Collage Eight" (1946), was included in the exhibition "Abstract and Surrealist American Art" at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1947. Her successful career, later dedicated primarily to work in bronze and steel, was surveyed in a retrospective exhibition at Amerika Haus, Berlin, in 1977.

        En attendant Godot

Les Editions De Minuit Paris: Les Editions De Minuit. Kenneth Tynan's and Harold Hobson's reviews made it into an intellectual hit which has since been regarded as having transformed the British stage" (DNB).Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1952. Octavo, original wrappers; custom half-leather box. Text in French. Some browning and rubbing to spine. Extremely rare signed.

        Prototype Sports Car Concept Art

Boston: circa 1953. Tempera on paper. Initialled "R.S.W." Mounted circular label, lower right. 15 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches. Framed. Handsome 1950's sports car design All of our present information about this drawing comes from a label on the back of the piece, which indicates that it comes from the archives of the A.J. White Motor Vehicle Research Company - designers of exotic cars in the Boston, MA area. We have not discovered any further information about the A. J. White Research Company thus far, nor about the artist, R.S.W. of this particular drawing. There does not appear to be any connection to the great White truck manufacturer. The drawing itself is especially nice, its cool red sportscar positioned diagonally between two details in blue, in a way that makes it appear anxious to move.
