The Little Steamroller. A Story of Adventure, Mystery and Detection

Max Parrish, London 1953 - Small quarto. (36)pp. First edition. Publisher's production file copy, as noted in ink on the front endpaper and the upper front panel of the dust wrapper. At the top of each page, the color register is written out with a double set of check marks. The dust jacket encapsulates this volume's unique usage as a display copy; at its rear fold it calls itself a "brilliant little companion" for another of Greene's children's books and states that it "can be obtained from any bookseller". Thus, the volume not only acts as a testament to Greene's foray into the world of children's literature, but also exemplifies a particular stage in its publication history. This is Greene's fourth and final book for children, telling the story of a hard-working steamroller that interrupts a Christmas-time smuggling operation at the airport in London, for which it receives an award from the Queen. All of Greene's children's books were done in collaboration with the illustrator Dorothy Glover, who worked under the pen name Dorothy Craigie. Greene and Glover met in 1938 while she was working as a costume designer for the theater, and they began an affair that ended in the late 1940s. This volume marks the end of Greene and Glover's professional relationship, which had only begun out of Greene's guilt at ending their romance. Glover's artwork features a creative use of a limited color palette, rendering entire scenes in five basic hues. A fine copy in blue gilt-stamped cloth, with dust wrapper that shows light wear to spine ends. (Wobbe A30a). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Generalization of Gravitational Theory.

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1953. First separate edition of Einstein's attempt to reconcile his own gravitational equations with Maxwell's electromagnetic equations, building toward a unified "field" theory of energy. Octavo, original wrappers. In fine condition. Exceptionally rare. General relativity is the geometric theory of gravitation published by Albert Einstein in 1915 and the current description of gravitation in modern physics. General relativity has been described as the most beautiful of all existing physical theories. General relativity generalizes special relativity and Newton's law of universal gravitation, providing a unified description of gravity as a geometric property of space and time, or spacetime. In particular, the curvature of spacetime is directly related to the energy and momentum of whatever matter and radiation are present. The relation is specified by the Einstein field equations, a system of partial differential equations.

        Nine Stories

Boston: Little Brown, 1953 Original cloth and dust jacket, price-clipped. Very slight rubbing to jacket. Fine FIRST EDITION. Advance review copy with publisher's slip giving the date of publication. This is a beautiful copy of what many consider Salinger's most important book. This landmark collection of short stories includes "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," "For Esmé with Love and Squalor," and "The Laughing Man." In her review of Nine Stories in the New York Times, Eudora Welty wrote, "J. D. Salinger's writing is original, first rate, serious and beautiful. Here are nine of his stories, and one further reason that they are so interesting, and so powerful seen all together, is that they are paradoxes. From the outside, they are often very funny: inside, they are about heartbreak, and convey it; they can do this because they are pure. The whole nine have an enchanting ease about them, a deceptively loose-appearing texture, a freshness and liveliness which might bid fair to disarm the reader, as he begins, say, the remarkable 'For Esme with Love and Squalor.' Nothing could be further from what Mr. Salinger is about to do to him. ... Mr. Salinger is a very serious artist, and it is likely that what he has to say will find many forms as time goes by-interesting forms, too. His novel, 'The Catcher in the Rye,' was good and extremely moving, although-for this reader-all its virtues can be had in a short story by the same author, where they are somehow more at home.".

        The Price of Salt

-Bantam (1953)-. Published only two years after Strangers on a Train, Highsmiths openly lesbian novel, rejected by her first publisher, and only in the 1990s published under her own name as "Carol", followed in the 2000s by the film. Second printing of the Bantam paperback edition in September 1953 at 25 cents, following the first Bantam edition of August the same year (at 35 cents). Number 1148. Some minor creasing at the top right, spine a little worn at the base with some creasing and rubbing, final page block looks a little tender and is slightly offset, a little creasing to the rear head edge corner, and some very minor loss of laminate at the rear head edge. Otherwise a very serviceable, and collectible copy of a scarce item. More pictures can be made available. I have just catalogued 49 Patricia Highsmith first editions and proof copies from my own collection. Please ask for a list if you are also a collector.

[Photo Album]: Korean War: Homefront and Front-Line (including Heartbreak Ridge)

, 1953. 1953. Very Good. Plastic spiral-bound with flexible plastic wrappers. Front cover and a couple of leaves detached, but otherwise both album and images are near fine. The album contains 170 black and white gelatin silver photographs mounted using paper corners. Most photographs are 3" x 3.5" or 4" x 3.5". A few photographs are lacking, but the album doesn't appear to have been pillaged. Streeter's dogtag is laid into the album. Approximately the first two-thirds of the album documents the stateside, married life of a 1950s army officer, the final third documents Lt. Streeter's service as the Pioneer and Ammunition Platoon Leader in the 3rd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division in 1952. The album, particularly the Korean photographs, are very well captioned in white album ink.. The beginning of the album follows both Streeter's prosaic family life, and military and base images, mostly at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky, but also with images of vacations in Pennsylvania and at the New Jersey shore. Once Streeter is shipped to Korea, the regiment was in almost continuous combat along the 38th parallel, where it earned five campaign streamers and a Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Streeter's photographs were taken while the regiment defended Heartbreak Ridge and the Punch Bowl. Among the photographs are images of defensive positions along Heartbreak Ridge, a dedication ceremony for a command post named in honor of two men killed in action, equipment assigned to the Recoilless Rifle Platoon (75 mm Recoilless Rifles, 50 caliber Machine guns, and 3.5 inch Rocket Launchers), the Mortar Platoon (81 mm Mortars), and the Machine gun Platoon (heavy and light machine guns), Lt. Streeter using a Flame Thrower, the P&A Platoon in formation and at work, sandbag bunkers built by Lt. Streeter's platoon, Lt. Streeter with captured Russian weapons, the command group conducting reconnaissance for Operation Slash, a Korean Service Corps worker and a South Korean infantry patrol, and a helicopter evacuating two seriously wounded men. A nice selection of front line images from the Korean War.
