Chemical Studies on the Structure of Insulin.

Cambridge: Emmanuel College,, 1952. A Dissertation Presented for Examination for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Tall quarto. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Typescript, text on the rectos only. 28 pages of plates. Dampstain and partial fading of boards, contents tanned, slight dampstain affecting upper edges of contents and more significant dampstain along lower edges of first third of volume, a good copy. Dissertation of the molecular biologist Ted Thompson, from the library of his supervisor Frederick Sanger whose first Nobel Prize was awarded for their joint work on insulin of which this dissertation is a portion. Inscribed from the author to Sanger on the title page, "To the Chief with best wishes, Ted". Thompson was born and primarily educated in Australia, but moved to the UK to undertake his PhD in Fred Sanger's lab at Cambridge. "Sanger had set out to determine the amino acid sequence of insulin and Thompson's task was to finish this technically demanding work. Thompson succeeded and insulin became the first protein for which the amino acid sequence was known. Sanger, who was awarded a Nobel Prize for this work, has written in glowing terms of Thompson's experimental abilities, skill and ability to get things done. Until this work, many people doubted that proteins consisted of specific sequences of amino acids. The insulin sequence was published in March 1953 and the following month Watson and Crick, also at Cambridge, published the double helix structure of DNA while, next door, Perutz and Kendrew were perfecting the X-ray diffraction techniques that would reveal the three dimensional structure of proteins" (Sydney Morning Herald obituary).

Group portrait showing Einstein standing between Talmudic scholar Tamar de Sola Pool and Hadassah National President Rebecca Beldner Shulman at his Princeton home in June of 1952 during a celebration marking the commencement of building of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem. The photograph measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 13.5 inches by 15.5 inches. An exceptional photograph of Einstein, rare and desirable signed.         The Old Man and the Sea

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good. Book Near Fine with a previous owner's name on the front end paper and signs of gentle use at the extremities. In a Very Good dust jacket with some small chips and tears and a bit of overall soiling. The final work of fiction published in the author's lifetime, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and cited by the Nobel Prize Committee, "The Old Man and the Sea" cemented Hemingway's legacy as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century and would turn him into a household name. The story follows the tribulations of an aging and suddenly unlucky fisherman, Santiago, as he tries to catch a gigantic marlin in the Straits of Florida. Hemingway wanted to show the simple dignity and biblical nature of Santiago's trials - and succeeded mightily. The book was originally published in full in an issue of Life Magazine, which subsequently sold 5 million copies in less than a week. "No outbursts of spite or false theatricalism impede the smooth rush of its narrative. Within the sharp restrictions imposed by the very nature of his story Mr. Hemingway has written with sure skill. Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket.

La Nappe du Catalan, soixante-quatre poemes et seize lithographies en couleurs de Jean Cocteau et Georges Hugnet [The Tablecloth of the Catalan, 64 poems and 16 lithographs in color. By Jean Cocteau and Georges Hugnet].

1952: Aux depends des auteurs, Paris. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION, NUMBER 11 OF ONLY 20 DELUXE COPIES WITH EXTRA SUITE OF PLATES. In line with the Surrealist tradition "cadavres exquis" (exquisite corpses)--a practice centered around the idea of complete collaboration--Cocteau and Hugnet worked together on both the illustrations and poems.  The two originally wrote the text (in French) on the tablecloths of the restaurant Le Catalan. The origin story of the poems served as inspiration for the title of the book. The creation of the lithographs was also collaborative; the drawings were outlined by Cocteau while Hugnet added color to the backgrounds. La Nappe du Catalan is the only collaboration between the two iconic artists.  A short preface to the book reads (translated from the French):These poems, written simultaneously, have been arranged on the tablecloths of a restaurant over the course of some lunches. Each of the poets left gaps in his verses which the other one filled. For the illustrations, one artist added colour while the other drew the outlines.Number 11 of 20 deluxe copies on vélin de Montval and with an extra suite of 32 plates. (Out of a total edition of 113 copies.)There are 16 color plates included in the main text; the extra suite (actually two suites together) contains 32 additional plates - 16 in color and 16 in black-and-white - showing the work of each artist separately (black-and-white for Cocteau; color for Hugnet) before the work was merged. 48 plates in total.Signed by both Cocteau and Hugnet in the colophon.Provenance: From the collection of the legendary surrealist art collector (and model to the artist Balthus) Helene Anavi, with her small embossed stamp on the front free endpaper.Paris: Aux Depends des Auteurs, 1952. Quarto (11 x 9 in; 277 x 225 mm). Two volumes in original wrappers. Small tear and very mild toning to the spine of the main book; plates in fine condition. RARE. Very Good.

        Foundation and Empire.

New York: Gnome Press Publishers, 1952. First edition. Octavo, original red cloth, first state. An excellent example in a very good second issue dust jacket. Boldly signed by Isaac Asimov on the title page. Jacket design by Edd Carter Foundation was originally a series of eight short stories published in Astounding Magazine between May 1942 and January 1950. According to Asimov, the premise was based on ideas set forth in Edward Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and was invented spontaneously on his way to meet with editor John W. Campbell, with whom he developed the concept. "The first four stories were collected, along with a new story taking place before the others, in a single volume published by Gnome Press in 1951 as Foundation. The remainder of the stories were published in pairs by Gnome as Foundation and Empire (1952) and Second Foundation (1953), resulting in the "Foundation Trilogy", as the series was known for decades" (Halmad, Spectra). The Foundation Trilogy was given a Hugo Award for the "Best All-Time Series" in 1966.

        THE HOLY PLACES

Queen Anne Press 1952 - First edition. Number 54 of a limited edition of 950 printed on mould made paper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper to friend and fellow novelist, Graham Greene, "Graham from Evelyn Christmas Card 1952". Full red buckram with gilt vignette on the upper cover and titles on the spine, in grey pictorial dustwrapper illustrated by Reynolds Stone. Top edge red, others uncut. A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, which shows a little wear to the spine ends and corners. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts by Reynolds Stone. A monumental association copy between two of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Waugh and Greene were contemporaries at Oxford though not friends at the time. They began a long friendship and series of correspondence in the mid thirties. Both were famous converts to Catholicism, though differed greatly in their interpretation of their religion. Politically they also differed: Greene the staunch socialist whilst Waugh maintained an aristocratic right wing leaning. Despite numerous arguments they maintained their friendship born from a mutual respect of each others work, when both authors found friends hard to come by.         East of Eden

New York: The Viking Pres, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher's light green cloth, lettered in navy, with red-brown spine label lettered in black; original pictorial dust jacket, with an illustration of a farm in a valley surrounded by mountains below a gradient sky, lettered in white and purple. Near fine, just very lightly sunned on the spine, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and minor nicks to the extremities, light toning to the spine, a few faints of light soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a very good, sturdy copy. East of Eden features the intertwining stories of the Hamilton and Trask families. The former is based on Steinbeck's own genealogical lineage, while the latter is a representation of the Biblical Adam and his descendants. Considered by the author to be his masterpiece work, East of Eden is a culmination of the major themes and strengths of Steinbeck's other novels: an affinity for nature, the pervasive struggle between good and evil, familial relationships, and American history. During the writing process, Steinbeck chronicled the development of this novel with letters to his friend and former publisher Pascal Covici, the contents of which were published a year after Steinbeck's death as Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters. A lengthy yet popular tale originally intended by the author to teach his sons about the Salinas Valley in California, East of Eden has been adapted into a film, a musical, and a television miniseries.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Scribner's seal and the letter A on the copyright page. Some rubbing along the edges of the boards. Text-block edges very lightly toned. Overall, a near fine copy in a near fine jacket. An attractive copy of the true first edition of Kurt Vonnegut's first novel. A fascinating and somewhat horrific story of a dystopic future in which automation rules society. Vonnegut gave this book a grade of "B" in a report card on his own books. 1952

London: William Kimber, 1952. First edition in English of this mountaineering classic recounting the 1943 attempt of three escaped Italian prisoners of war to reach the summit of Mount Kenya. Octavo, original cloth, map endpapers. Very good in a very good dust jacket with some chipping to the crown and overall wear, tape repair to the verso. Rare in the original dust jacket. In No Picnic on Mount Kenya, Felice Benuzzi recounts one of the most bizarre and daring adventures of the twentieth century. In 1943, Benuzzi and two fellow Italian prisoners of war escaped from a British camp in equatorial East Africa with one goal to climb the seventeen-thousand-foot Mount Kenya, Africa's second tallest mountain. Filled with suspense and humor, it is an extraordinary story that has earned its place as a masterpiece. A film adaptation The Ascent was made in 1994.         Inscribed Promotional Photo for the film Park Row

Black and white photo, 8" x 10" of film director Samuel Fuller and one of the film's producers, standing and chatting in front of several promotional posters for Fuller's 1952 film, Park Row. Inscribed by Fuller: "To Fred I. Archibald -- with best wishes -- Sam Fuller. 5-5-52." An uncommon signature, and a nice artifact from an early and interesting Fuller film about the New York City newspaper wars of the 1880s. Some consider the film an overlooked-classic -- in particular its tribute to freedom of the press (Fuller began his career as a tabloid journalist) was in marked contrast to mainstream Hollywood's fear of the McCarthy witch hunts. .
