        Four Picture Test.

Four original watercolors, mounted on the inside of a portfolio. Fifteen autograph manuscript stories, all dated and signed, by the writers Belcampo, J.C. Bloem, Gerard den Brabander, Simon Carmiggelt, Jan Engelman, Hella S. Haasse, Lucebert, Adriaan Morriën, Gerard Kornelis van het Reve, Adriaan Roland Holst, M. Vasalis, Hendrik de Vries, and Victor van Vriesland, and the artists Siep van den Berg and Melle (Oldeboerrigter). Thirty-one leaves. 1952-1953. Each manuscript kept in hand-lettered parchment paper folders, all together in custom-made leather-backed clamshell box with giltlettered title on spine ('Van Lennep/ Four Picture Test').l The Four Picture Test ('Vier Platen Test') was developed by David Jacob van Lennep (1896-1982), a Dutch professor in psychological evaluation. This psychological test consists of four watercolors of varied sizes, representing different general situations: '(I) being together with one other person, (II) being personally alone, (III) being socially alone, (IV) being together with many other persons'. Writer, psychologist and graphologist Manuel van Loggem (1916-1998) showed these four pictures to fifteen celebrated or upcoming authors and artists, asking them to look only for one minute and then write a story. The writers, all writing in their own style, came up with all kinds of plotlines, dialogues and details. A recurring theme is conflict, between spouses or business partners. Hella Haasse's story is very dramatic, Lucebert's short story is poetic and Reve's story (written both in English and Dutch) about the relationship between two men ends sad. 'Het begin en het einde zijn ongedifferentieerd. Babies zijn babies, grijsaards & oude vrouwen zijn dat - voor de toeschouwer, zonder meer, in de phase daartusschen gebeurt zichtbaar elk lot', begins Vasalis, who herself was a psychiatrist.Unique and intriguing collection of unpublished stories.

The Sensory Order. An Inquiry into the Foundations of Theoretical Psychology

London, Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1952 [first UK edition; first published in the US in the same year]. Octavo, xxii, 209 pages. Cloth; a fine copy with the unclipped dustwrapper slightly chipped and bumped, with its spine also sunned and a little marked. Friedrich August Hayek (1899-1992) 'made fundamental contributions in political theory, psychology, and economics', the latter for which he shared the 1974 Nobel Prize with Gunnar Myrdal. When this book was published, he was 'Professor of Social and Moral Science in the Committee on Social Thought, University of Chicago'. In it, he 'interprets the nervous system as an apparatus of classification which distinguishes between classes of stimuli on the basis of their joint occurrence in the past. The order of the sensory qualitites [sic] in terms of which we acquire all our conscious experience thus appears as the result of a kind of pre-sensory experience. This principle of explanation is then applied to other mental phenomena such as emotions and conceptual thought' (publisher's blurb).

Various formats, mostly 4to & 8vo. Very good. Various formats, mostly 4to & 8vo. The Origins of the Adlai Stevenson Candidacy, 1952. A small but important archive from the Democratic Party powerbroker from New York and Arizona, BURTON DRUCKER, who played an important role in organizing support for the nomination of Governor Adlai Stevenson as the Democratic candidate for President in the 1952 election. It is clear from the two letters from Stevenson to Druckerin early 1952, that Governor Stevenon was at first reluctant to run. In his letter of February 11, Stevenson writes that "I was touched and delighted to have your thoughtful and flattering letter. I confess I am a little bewildered by the present clamor and I have long since come to the conclusion that Illinois is about all I can handle - and then some! ... " Robert Sherwood's letter of March 22 acknowledges as much when he writes, "It seems to me that the most important thing that anyone can do in Governor Stevenson's favor under present circumstances is to write to him in Springfield urging him to run ... " The Democratic National Convention eventually took place in Chicago, July 21-25, with Stevenson as the leading candidate, and he won the nomination handily over Truman's Vice-President, Senator Alben Barkley. [with:] Autograph Note signed, March 20, 1956, by Stevenson's personal secretary, enclosing a signed photo; and an Autograph Christmas Card, signed and daed "New York - 1962 (when he was Ambassador to the U.N.), with printed quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson: "I send you a favorite and familiar prayer - by a man I wish was a relative!"

The albums begins at Camp Monte Strong in Sapporo, Japan and later moves to Camp Crawford with photos of uniformed men posing around the camp. One page shows the long rows of tents seen throughout the camp as well as a photo of a soldier using a metal detector captioned "testing new 625-H." There are also photos of soldiers with Japanese women at their camp, captioned "the Beer Hall Girls," and in the city of Sapporo. The men are seen working at the camp, doing their laundry, and drilling. Two photos show an explosion in a field and another shows a camouflaged soldier with a machine gun and another shows a test with a flame thrower. A photo taken after a mine demonstration shows the men standing in a crater and is captioned, "good crater." Aside from entertaining local women, the men played baseball on the base and went boating in a local river during their leisure time. One section of photos shows the men at a mountain base in Hokkaido, Japan in December of 1951 posing in the snow. It's captioned, "Shimanatsu Manuver Area -- Worst winter here or there -- snowed sleeted all night. Truck had to be towed all the way to highway...we were attacked only I + R + ATM participated in 'live ammo' problem -- rest of company not there." Following this two photos are artistically shot images showing a solider looking out at the Pacific Ocean in full uniform on a beach. The only color photograph in the album shows a soldier in Hokkaido, Japan participating in "maneuvers." After his time in Japan he was sent to a "reserve area" in Korea in 1952. These photos show tents, bunkers, and a mine field as well as men working at the camp. One photo is captioned, "Korean graves" and shows a large field with distant headstones, another shows an Asian soldier affectionately captioned "Kim." The photographer also captured images of the men in the front lines in and around Army vehicles and setting up encampments. A candid of the compiler of the album sitting on his bunk reads, "Sunday -- shortly before noon chow -- classic?" A group photo taken at a party depicts the smiling faces of the men of the 179th after forgetting their cares with a few drinks. The album ends with photos of the soldier posing in uniform at home when his tour of duty ended.A nice collection of an American soldier's photography from the little documented Korean War.

        Flowering Exile. An Autobiographical Excursion.

London, Peter Davies, [1952]. 8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in cream; pp. 287; minimally spotted in places, evenly lightly browned due to paper stock; presentation copy with a manuscript letter by the author and a portrait loosely inserted. Very rare first edition, the copy presented by the author to the historian and writer on East Asia, Maurice Collis. Dymia Hsiung, wife of Hsiung Shih-I, writer and playwright in Bejing and London was the first Chinese woman to publish a fictional autobiography in Britain. 'She was an intriguing and complex woman. I was fascinated by the different accounts I gathered of her. In the UK and US press of the time, she was continually depicted as an exotic China doll, the picture of childlike innocence and female vacuity. But she was also described to me by those who knew her as an incredibly strong, even dominating character, who knew her own mind. This comes across in her decision to write the story of her life in England' (interview with Diana Yeh, author of The Happy Hsiungs. Performing China and the Struggle for Modernity, online).
