        SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952)

MGM 1952 - Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) glossy title lobby card, USA. Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell, Cyd Charisse, dir: Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen; MGM. The quintessential MGM musical, the favorite of many with its lighthearted look at the movies' transition to "talkies." Great songs of that era highlighted the film. So popular has it become that it is now a major stage musical. Nice glossy paper card captures the spirit of the film. There is a bit of edge wear and slight creases at corners. ABOUT FINE

The Old Man and the Sea

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. Book Near Fine with a previous owner's name on the front paste-down, top edge dusty and a trifle cocked. In a Very Good+ dust jacket with a few short tears at the top edge of the front and rear panel and some toning, noticeable at the spine. The final work of fiction published in the author's lifetime, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and cited by the Nobel Prize Committee, "The Old Man and the Sea" cemented Hemingway's legacy as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century and would turn him into a household name. The story follows the tribulations of an aging and suddenly unlucky fisherman, Santiago, as he tries to catch a gigantic marlin in the Straits of Florida. Hemingway wanted to show the simple dignity and biblical nature of Santiago's trials - and succeeded mightily. The book was originally published in full in an issue of Life Magazine, which subsequently sold 5 million copies in less than a week. "No outbursts of spite or false theatricalism impede the smooth rush of its narrative. Within the sharp restrictions imposed by the very nature of his story Mr. Hemingway has written with sure skill. Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Near Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

John F. Kennedy Seeks to Set the Historical Record Straight on Munich

1952 - Draft Typed Letter (unsigned), to the Editor of Time Magazine, June 13, 1952, with handwritten emendations. 4 pp. 8 1/2 x 11 in, but for p. 4 which is cropped at bottom. "Randolph S. Churchill denounces the 'holier-than-thou' attitude adopted by some Americans towards the English in regard to Munich and states that England 'had no more moral or legal obligation' to defend Czechoslovakia than had the United States. Three days before the Munich Conference (September 26) the French received Chamberlain's solemn pledge of absolute and immediate, as opposed to probable and eventual military action if France went to the Defense of Czechoslovakia. That the British chose peace at this time rather than war is not, in my opinion, to their discredit, considering the poor condition of their armaments. As I stated in my book, While Why England Slept, the criticism directed against Munich could have been directed with more accuracy at Britain's tardiness in rearming than against the pact itself." Complete Transcript [Bolded additions made in Kennedy's hand; bracketed additions from the retained copy.] [June 13, 1952EditorTIMETime & Life Building9 Rockefeller PlazaNew York, N.Y.Dear Sir:]In your June 9th issue, Randolph S. Churchill denounces the "holier-than-thou" attitude adopted by some Americans towards the English in regard to Munich and states that England "had no more moral or legal obligation" to defend Czechoslovakia than had the United States. Mr. Churchill implies that the respective positions of Great Britain and the United States towards Czechoslovakia were on a par. As a member of the League of Nations, England had an obligation towards collective security that the United States had not seen fit to assume, although it must be admitted that by 1938 the League was almost defunct, the major powers having no small responsibility for its failure.More important was Britain's military alliance with France under the Locarno Pact of 1925, which although it did not guarantee Czechoslovakia against aggression as it did Belgium, made it inevitable that if France went to war to fulfill its own direct obligation under the Franco-Czech Treaty of 1924, England would be drawn in. Prime Minister Chamberlain described this position clearly in his statement to the House of Commons on March 24, 1938 when it was apparent that a crisis was brewing in Czechoslovakia, and his warning that Britain would become involved in any war that France fought was echoed a few months later by Sir John Simon, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in his Lanark speech (August 27, 1938). Three days before the Munich Conference (September 26) the French received Chamberlain's solemn pledge of absolute and immediate, as opposed to probable and eventual military action if France went to the Defense of Czechoslovakia. The British Government projected itself into the Czech affair by sending the Runciman Mission to Prague in July, 1938. Although it was announced (by Lord Halifax, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to the House of Lords, July 27th) that Lord Runciman would act as mediator in "a private capacity", he clearly had an official status; his mission was staffed by experts lent by the government and its expenses were paid by the Foreign Office. Moreover, when he submitted his report of September 21st, advocating the transfer of the Sudeten areas to Germany, it was printed as one of the documents in the White Paper on the Czech crisis. Thus England was deeply committed, by her treaty ties with France and by her official actions, to the settlement of the issues at stake. The illustrious father of Mr. Churchill has admitted that Great Britain was deeply involved and that "it must be recorded with regret that the British government not only acquiesced but encouraged the French government in a fatal course." (Churchill, The Gathering Storm, 321.)That the British chose peace at this time rather than war is not, in my opinion, to their discre. (See website for full description)

        Picture: A Story About Hollywood.

New York: Rinehart & Company, 1952. First edition of Ross' classic account of the making of John Huston's The Red Badge of Courage. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author in the month of publication, "To Brendan, a mysterious and delightful continent, With my warmest affection. Lillian December 2, 1952." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some toning to the spine. In the spring of 1950, when New Yorker staff writer Lillian Ross heard that John Huston was planning to make a film of Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, she decided she would follow the movie's progress "in order to learn whatever I might learn about the American motion-picture industry." What resulted was Picture, which Newsweek has called "the best book on Hollywood ever published." Picture received raves from the worlds of film and literature in equal measure for its unforgettable portrait of the language, the ways, and the preoccupations of Hollywood: Charlie Chaplin called Picture "brilliant and sagacious" and legendary editor William Shawn termed it "the definitive book on the Hollywood community." Chosen as one of the Top 100 Works of U.S. Journalism of the Twentieth Century were chosen by the New York University Department of Journalism.

        The Decisive Moment

New York: Simon and Schuster in collaboration with Editions Verve of Paris, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. First American edition. In publisher's paper-covered boards decorated by Matisse, in a price-clipped dust jacket replicating design on boards, with captions book laid in. Good. Binding weak and fragile with pages pulling from binding, and with exposure to multiple hinges. Paper covered boards toned at the spine and edges, lightly worn at spine ends. The dust jacket is toned and lightly soiled, with spine joints completely reinforced with tape to the verso and occasionally to the front side as well, spine panel is toned and lightly water stained. A mediocre survival of a notoriously fragile book and dust jacket.

        A Buyer's Market.

Heinemann. 1952. 8vo., original cloth in second issue dust wrapper with quite a large price-clip, the small red panel on the spine of the wrapper is a little faded as usual, otherwise this is a very good copy indeed. First edition. The dustwrapper differs from the first issue in that the front flap has been clipped along the edge to remove the original price and has then been printed with ''cheaper edition 6s net''; on most copies seen this price has also been clipped as here.
