. Privattryk, Silkeborg 1952. Illustr. med 109 linoleumssnit af Jorn. 96 s. Oplag 109 numr. og af Jorn sign. ekspl. No 59 of 60 trykt pa uglittet papir. Publisher's cased boards with original lithographed sideboards and cloth-back. * PHH 120. Van de Loo 123.
Jorn himself considered this book of great importance and therefore he sent 3 copies (without illustrations) to the Philosophic faculty of the University hoping for having it accepted as a thesis. Professor in philosophy Bent Schultzer was positive and found the book wellwritten, but had to turn it down as it was not a scientific work. Jorn on the other hand was not interested in a doctorate title but wanted to have a dialogue between art and science.
Jorn was personally participating in the printing of the book together with Johannes Gregersen in Emil Stechers printing house in Silkeborg. The book is stated as being printed in 3 different variants: 25 copies on imitated handmade paper, 60 copies on unglazed paper and 24 copies on glazed paper; all 3 "variants", however, are printed on the same type of paper. As Jorn was a poor man at the time and did not have money to cover printing-expenses, he made a first subscriptions-invitation which gave 25 buyers. This was followed up by 2 others which gave 60 and 24 buyers respectively. Moreover the price was doubled at each subscription-invitation..

During the 1940s and 50s they both lived in the South of France and exchanged daily correspondence (over 1200 letters between them survive). The present work is an homage to their mutual friend Guillaume Apollinaire. A very pleased Rouveyre described this as "a work fashioned by the most beautiful, fraternal, tripartite, friendship grounded ... on the same religion of art and poetry" (Rouveyre, quoted in Duthuit). Besides the present collaboration, Matisse illustrated Rouveyre's Repli. Very minor wear to extremities of slipcase, otherwise in excellent condition. Duthuit 31.

Singapore and Hong Kong Photographic Albums

(circa1910).. 4 non uniform photograph albums from a private collection. 13 x 15.5cm; 21.8 x 15.9cm; 26.4 x 16.3cm; 28.5 x 34.5cm. Each in cloth covered boards. Bindings worn with a little loss particularly at corners and some light marking. The cloth on the largest album is heavily flecked. Some browning on card leaves particularly in the largest album. These four albums of snapshots taken by an English resident of Singapore in the late 19th and early 20th century offer a fascinating snapshot of Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau over 100 years ago. Most of the photographs show Singapore and Johor however a visit to Hong Kong and Macau is also included. The photographs appear to have been the work of J. Forbes (his signature appears in one album) and are each captioned by the same hand in English. The smallest of the four albums, titled "Album" on its upper cover, includes a handwritten title on the front paste down "Pictures of Johore Singapore 1/1/10" and is signed "J. Forbes". This delightful little album includes (13 x 15.5cm) features 14 black and white photos (7 x 9.7cm) mostly of Johore (Johor) including views of the coast, the landing stage, a "famous gambling house" in what looks like a residential bungalow, views of the interior - prayer hall, pulpit and "sacred water", and exterior of the Sultan Abu Bakar mosque (described as an Indian mosque in the caption) with its Victorian clock tower-inspired minarets, a large building described intriguingly as "The abode of the Sultan's wifes (one of which is an English girl)". There are also views of a hotel in Johore, Indians sitting in open train carts which are described as "cattle trucks" on their way to Singapore, and a Chinese school in Singapore showing a group of young people in military uniform gathered outside on the playing field, with the school buildings in the distance. Bound in green cloth with an art deco style floral pictorial cover the album titled "Happy Times" (21.8 x 15.9cm) consists of 47 black and white photos (approximately 10 x 7cm/7 x 10cm). Forty two of these photographs are of Singapore, though there is one captioned "A dip in the briny - Hong Kong" and another "A view of the Bund - Macao" and three photographs of other Europeans captioned only with their names. Several show views of "The Gardens", which appear to be the Botanic Gardens in Singapore, including one of "a queer tree" with tangled roots and there are many photos featuring local people - Malay women with their children, a Malay couple, a Malay girl at the village well, a group of Chinese women, Indians with their bullock carts, rickshaw pullers, and a group of children captioned "We are a merry little band". A pretty young woman in a sarong pictured near a pounding implement is titled, rather tellingly, "Oh why can't you change your skin". Various vehicles depicted show that the main modes of transport were the rickshaw, the horse and buggy, and the electric tram for conveying people, and the bullock cart for transporting goods. Other shots show members of the colonial population in various places - several having now changed or disappeared. Examples are the Sea View Hotel at Katong Beach, then on the seashore, the Singapore Cricket Club established in 1952 and still standing in the colonial heart of the city, the building occupied by S. Moutrie & Co Ltd which was a popular music and piano warehouse at the time, a large white building on the seashore captioned "Passive Panjang" which could be a play on the name "Pasir Panjang" situated on the west coast of the island, a view from River Valley Road - a popular residential area for wealthy foreigners, Chinese merchants and Straits Chinese families, and the local railway station then situated in Tank Road and built to more efficiently ferry goods to the docks at nearby Tanjong Pagar. "Sunny Memories", the title on the upper cover of one of the albums, is a collection of 79 photos from Singapore from Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau (and even Margate) placed in no particular order. 3 photographs and surrounding card have been removed. Views of land and seascapes, interesting shots of events such as a coffin on its way to the cemetery handcarried on poles, a young Chinese boy pausing in his game of stick and hoop, views taken in Hong Kong after the typhoon in 1909 showing damaged boats and a one of a Chinese man holding a flying fox said to have had a wingspan of 5 feet. Some of the terms used and the captions depict the bygone era which they represent, for example a Chinese temple called here a "joss house", a photo captioned "A Chinese celestial" and a photo of some young boys captioned "Straits Born Chinks". Several photos feature Europeans in various places or posing for photos for example a young man and his wife as newly-weds standing (in separate photos) with their many gifts, a portrait of a man dressed in traditional costume and captioned "King of the Cannibal Islands", group shots of people such as on a picnic in Hong Kong or "on the shore at Passir Panjang" and several feature three children - Sidney, Bertie and Queenie - singly or together. One photo is titled "Sea View Hotel Passir Panjang Singapore" - in fact the Sea View Hotel was located in Tanjong Katong on the east of the island whereas Pasir Panjang is in the west. Other places featured include the house at 124 River Valley Road, a local Singapore railway station, several joss houses and the gardens in both Singapore and Hong Kong. Six photos have been removed, damaging the surrounding card and there are 12 empty places where it appears photographs were not inserted. The largest album in this collection contains 119 photos of Hong Kong, Canton, Singapore and Johor. Several are duplicates of those found in the smaller albums and many are uncaptioned. The first 15 pages are various views of Hong Kong and Kowloon and feature places including the Catholic Church Canton, the harbour master's residence at Whampoa, the view from Kennedy Road at the Peak, HMS Monmouth in the harbour, a duck farm in Kowloon, and boats and junks. There are also photos of people such as coolies loading and unloading goods onto boats, people transporting water and ice in carts, a laundry man, men hauling coal and people swimming. The majority of the rest of the album features photos of Singapore and Johor, including Malay, Chinese and European style houses and buildings, the mosque in Johor, local people and Europeans. Nine photos and possibly a few more (it is difficult to tell at the rear of the label) have been removed and six leaves remained unfilled. .

        Are There Quantum Jumps?

Edinburgh and London: Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1952. FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Schrödinger?s consideration of quantum jumps and the future of physics. Complete in two parts. ?Throughout his life, Schrödinger sought to discredit Bohr?s concept of quantum jumping. His forceful attacks culminated in the 1952 paper ?Are There Quantum Jumps?? In this paper he also presented some objections against Born?s collision treatment and probabilistic interpretation...?Schrödinger also ?repeated his old arguments, enveloped in a good deal of rhetoric. Physical science is at present in danger, he argued, of being severed both from its glorious history and from its cultural milieu. Physicists must concern themselves, not only with ingenious theoretical constructs and their agreement with experimental data, but also with the suitability of their concepts to be absorbed into a general spiritual culture of mankind: ?Science is not a soliloquy. It gains value only within its cultural milieu, only by having contact with all those who are now, and who in future will be, engaged in promoting spiritual culture and knowledge.??Not all concepts, according to Schrödinger, are destined to survive: ?A theoretical science... where the initiated continue musing to each other in terms that are, at best, understood by a small group of close fellow travelers, will necessarily be cut off from the rest of cultural mankind, in the long run it is bound to atrophy and ossify?. The ?abbreviated language? of quantum jumps, Schrödinger argued, is not a suitable candidate for long-term survival. There were other ?ingenious constructs of the human mind that gave an exceedingly accurate description of observed facts and have yet lost all interest except to historian,? for example, the epicycles of planetary motion. The modern analogue of epicycles, Schrödinger prophesied, are the quantum jumps? (Beller, Quantum Dialogue: The Making of a Revolution).IN: The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Vol III, No. 10 (pp. 109-123); Part II, Vol III, No. 11 (pp. 233-242). Edinburgh and London: Thomas Nelson and Sons, Ltd., August and November, 1952. Octavo, original wrappers. A few marginal (scientific) pencil notations (not in Schrödinger paper). Part I with a little chipping and small ink stain to spine end wrappers and patch of soiling to rear wrapper. Part II fine. An extremely well-preserved copy, rare in original wrappers. Very Good.

The Structure of Synthetic Polypeptides. I. The Transform of Atoms on a Helix" in Acta Crystallographica, Volume 5, Part 5, 10 September 1952, pp. 581-586

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS "A FIRST STEP BY CRICK & WATSON ON THE ROAD TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE DOUBLE HELIX" (Jeremy Norman, History of Information Website). This paper presents "Crick's full mathematical treatment… of the x-ray patterns produced by helical molecules generally" (Judson, Eighth Day of Creation, p. 129). It is the "important precursory work on spiral structures leading to the theory of DNA" (PBA Galleries, 2011 Auction). As this paper went to publication, Crick wrote of it to his colleague Lawrence Brown: We have found "A structure for D.N.A… beautiful that we swoon every time we think of it" (Christies, Autographed letter by Crick, 2013, 1160-65). "In February, 1952 Scottish physicist William Cochran at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, and physicist and molecular biologist Francis Crick also at the Cavendish Laboratory, and Czech-English physical chemist and crystallographer Vladimir Vand of the University of Glasgow submitted their paper on the theory of helical diffraction to Acta Crystallographica. "The paper [this paper]… provided the formulae for the Fourier transforms of a number of helical structures, and presented evidence that the structure of a synthetic polypeptide was based on the alpha helix of Pauling and Corey. [Cochran wrote:] "It was, I believe, the first fairly conclusive experimental evidence for the existence of a helical structure at the molecular level. . . . The main value of this work, seen in retrospect, is that it was a first step on the road to the discovery of the structure of DNA by Jim Watson and Crick" (William Cochran, "This week's citation classic," Current Contents, May 18, 1987, 16. CONDITION & DETAILS: Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaard Ltd. First edition in original wraps. 4to. 10.25 by 7.5 inches (256 x 188mm). Continuously paginated pp. 557- 700. Meticulously re-backed at the spine with the original spine label. Pristine condition inside and out. Fine.
