Paris Review, Numbers 1-50, Complete [Signed by Matthiessen and Plimpton]

(Paris): (The Paris Review). (1952-1970). A complete run of the first 50 issues of the groundbreaking literary journal started by Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton and Harold Humes, which introduced a large number of the most highly respected 20th century writers to their first readers, including Philip Roth, V.S. Naipaul, Adrienne Rich, and others. Jack Kerouac's first excerpt from On the Road was published within, as was Beckett's Molloy and the first pieces from Jim Carroll's Basketball Diaries. The "Writers at Work" series of interviews included was another unparalleled feature and included talks with such writers as William Faulkner, Vladimir Nabokov, William Burroughs, Joan Didion, and others. The first four issues are signed by one or more of the founders: Issues 1 & 2 by Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton, and issues 3 & 4 by Plimpton alone. Consecutive runs of the early issues, which included so many notable debuts, are difficult to assemble these days, let alone with the early copies signed by the founders, who are now deceased. One of the influential literary journals of the postwar years. All issues are in very good or better condition. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good.

        Mamluk Costume.

Geneva: Albert Kundig,, 1952. A Survey. Quarto. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt. With the plain dust jacket. 20 plates. A superb copy in the clean dust jacket with a couple of short closed tears to the front panel. First edition, first impression of the first monograph on medieval Islamic costume since Reinhard Dozy's Dictionnaire détaillé, published in 1845. Mayer's findings, based on literary and documentary evidence and focusing on the development of court ceremonial under al-Nasir Muhammad, are still authoritative today. The Mamluks were a Turkic slave dynasty who ruled Egypt, Syria and the Hijaz from the overthrow of the Ayyubid dynasty in 1250 to the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517, with Cairo as their capital. Mayer was born in Galicia in 1895, studied in Vienna, Lausanne and Berlin, and emigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1921 where he was employed in Department of Antiquities. He rose to become Director of Archives, before leaving to become the first Sir David Sassoon Professor of Near Eastern Art and Archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1932. From 1943-5 Mayer served as rector of the university, and from 1940 to 1950, he was president of the Israel Exploration Society and was honorary president of the Israel Oriental Society. He died in 1959.

Book is near fine, absolutely no wear to the boards, crisp sharp corners, no bumbs, nice even green cloth color with no fading. Inside, no markings of any kind in the book. The only blemish, common to all copies I have seen, is some darkening of the gutters to a few pages from the printer's glue and just a very tiny bit of foxing on the blank endpapers, also from the glue used. Original mylar wrap is tattered. The faux-wood paper box is split apart and has done its job of protecting the book. Lovely copy.

VIGNETTE FROM NIGHTS OF HORROR - ORIGINAL ARTWORK

NP, np 1952 - 1 drawing. Accompanying was a letter describing the genealogy of the drawing, "The "Nights of Horror" series was drawn by a gifted artist, whom it was my good luck to meet in person in 1952 and who graciously sold me his original drawings, some of which were even inspired by my suggestions. Naturally I spent a small fortune for those drawings, but I have always felt very happy to own them during the past 18 years." Despite the curious note, the art does not resemble the work of Joe Schuster, co-creator of Superman, who drew the Nights of Horror serials depicted in Craig Yoe's 2008 book Secret Identity. 5" X 8", ink and gouache on paper. Very good.
