The English - Arabic Cookery Book.

      - [Beirut, Dar-Al-Hayat,] June, 1950. 8vo. Wire-stitched into original green printed wrappers, pp. 239, interspersed with advertisements; wrappers very lightly rubbed, even browning due to paper stock. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author, a very rare bilingual (English and Arabic) cookery book with a fusion of British, Imperial and Arabic/Lebanese recipes. The interesting advertisements are sometimes even trilingual, with the occasional slogan in French. From the culinary point of view several recipes are a disgrace: the English lady manages to eliminate everything which makes Middle Eastern cookery delicious: mint, garlic, chilly, parsley, even the salt in houmus. In the preface, the author states that this book is the product of her 30 years in the Middle East. Axford, English Language Cookbooks p. 134. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Household god with large fan. Traditional coloured Shaman temple hanging painted on paper-board for the adornment of a ‘House of Psyche’, or Shamanic shrine. Folded sheets; rolled paper loops attached to top corners, (100.5 x 75.5 cm).

South Korea circa 1950. - The Household god props up a large fan decorated with 3 seated goddesses and lotus leaves with his left hand, and carries a string of bells with his right; his richly oramented red dress includes a chest panel with 2 cranes; he is accompanied by 2 musicians in coloured robes with traditional instruments. Korean folk paintings on strong paper expressing myths, legends and magic-religious imagery were used in Shamanism, the ethnic religion of Korea. The shamanic deities and their assistants are presented in formal Korean dress. As the worship of Shaman gods and their shrines has much diminished in Korea in the past half century owing to political instability, very few temples and their contents have survived. Shamanic paintings have become sought after and collectable as relics of another era. The hanging is generally well preserved, as also the colouring. Some neat repairs to folds, isolated soot and candle staining, small marginal tears.

        To the voters of Oxford".

[Oxford, Mississippi: Oxford Eagle,, 1950]. [The Beer Broadside.] Single leaf broadside, printed on recto only. In fine condition. Faulkner's infamous and extremely uncommon "beer broadside" was distributed in his home town of Oxford prior to a referendum on the repeal of a local ban on the sale of beer, implemented in 1944. Faulkner refuted four of the claims made by clergymen in favour of the ban, after they had printed an advertisement in the local paper, the Oxford Eagle, "proclaiming the evils of drinking and the potency of four percent beer" (Blotner, p. 521). The Eagle refused to publish Faulkner's response to the clergymen, but agreed to print his broadside for circulation. It went on to be published in The New Yorker, and was described by editors as "the clearest and most concise prose" that Faulkner had ever written. However, to Faulkner's dismay, the ban was not overturned after Oxford voted 480–313 to renew it. In a follow-up letter to the editors of the Eagle, which they did publish, Faulkner wrote "I notice that your paper has listed me among the proponents of legal beer. I resent that. I am every inch as much an enemy of liberty and enlightenment and progress as any voting or drinking dry either in Oxford ... I object to ministers of God violating the canons and ethics of their sacred and holy avocation by using, either openly or underhand, the weight and power of their office to try to influence a civil elelction" (Moreland, p. 414). The ban was partially overturned in 1972: the sale of beer was allowed, but could not be refrigerated, or sold on a Sunday. The remaining restrictions were overturned in 2013.

Printed and Typed Document Signed and also initialed, 2 pages on two separate folio sheets, Beverly Hills, CA, Oct. 26, 1949

This document is a "William Morris Agency" contract between Jolson and the talent agency to represent Jolson, "in the television field throughout the world..." for a period ending on "September 30, 1950." The year was originally typed as "1952," but Jolson changed it to "1950" and initialed the change, "A. J." Also initialed by the agency representative. The document sets the terms of the representation and payment. The contract was prepared in the early years of TV so that the new medium and movies are differentiated in the last paragraph. "The term 'television' as used herein shall be deemed to include all methods and devices of every type or nature...by which likenesses, appearances or performances...may be visually presented to persons not immediately present; provided, however, that the direct viewing of motion pictures not designed primarily...for transmission by television shall not be included in the term 'television'...." Jolson signs above his typed name, "Al Jolson." Our document was prepared and signed about a year before Jolson's death from a massive heart attack he suffered after he returned home from performing for the UN troops in Korea in September 1950. Two double punched holes atop each page, staple holes on upper left corner, and a slight diagonal cut along lower empty margin of each page. Lower margin fold on each page with tear at fold on right margin of second page not affecting text. Otherwise, normal aging.

----------------------- |English description available on request.| [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Axs
