The Chronicles of Narnia Set: The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew, The Last Battle

London: Geofrey Bles, 1950-1956.. London: Geofrey Bles, 1950-1956. First British editions of each of the seven volumes in the author's acclaimed Narnia Series. Each volume is finely bound in three quarters green morocco. Marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom slipcase. Illustrations by Pauline Baynes. Octavo, seven volumes. An attractive set. The Chronicles of Narnia is "…unforgettable not only for the excitement and suspense of the adventures but also for the strong emotions they describe so well… [and they are] further enriched by Lewis' skillful use of language" (Silvey, 406). "Each book has something new and different to offer and there is no weakening of either inspiration or interest" (Eyre, 132). It is interesting that Lewis' inspiration came from a dream: "At first I had very little idea how the story would go. But then suddenly Aslan came bounding into it. I think I had been having a good many dreams of lions about that time…[O]nce he was there, he pulled the whole story together, and soon he pulled the six other Narnian stories in after him (On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature, 1980). Lewis was "concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction… to re-imagine the…story in an exciting narrative context… [The Narnia books are] intoxicating to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative of readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th-century author" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 370).

        Burning Bright

New York - The Viking Press., 1950. New York - The Viking Press., 1950 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The first edition of this novel from Pulitzer winner John Steinbeck. First edition, first printing. Burning Bright was written as an experiment with producing a play in novel format. Rather than providing only the dialogue and brief stage directions as would be expected in a play, Steinbeck fleshes out the scenes with details of both the characters and the environment. The intention was to allow the play to be read by the non-theatrical reader while still allowing the dialogue to be lifted and performed with little adaptation by acting companies. Condition: In a grey cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, generally smart, with just some slight shelfwear. Dustwrapper is sound, though with some edgewear and handling marks. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signature to front free-endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean, aside from a few patches of foxing. Overall: VERY GOOD in a GOOD dustwrapper..

        The English Eccentrics

London: Dennis Dobson Limited, 1950. London: Dennis Dobson Limited,, 1950. Octavo. Original purple cloth, spine lettered in silver, publisher's imprint on rear board, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy, in the toned jacket that has one short closed tear at the foot of the rear panel, two at the head of the front panel and one at the foot, and a chip to the crease of the front flap. First edition, third impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Gore, with admiration, from Edith." Gore Vidal (1925–2012) was an American writer known for his essays, novels, screenplays, and Broadway plays. A series of witty vignettes on the quirkier side of English society - such as Lord Rokeby, whose beard reached his knees and who seldom left his bath; the irascible Captain Thicknesses, who left to his son Lord Audley in his Will, his right hand (to be severed after his death) and Squire Charles Waterton, who was never happier than when taking a bareback ride on a crocodile.
