        King Richard III

London & New York: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., E. P. Dutton & Co. Inc.,, 1950. Small quarto (129 × 100 mm). Original black limp calf, publisher's red and gilt device to front cover, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. In a suede-lined burgundy morocco drop-back box with gilt-lettered morocco label to spine and front cover by Bayntun-Riviere. Wood-engraved illustrations by Eric Gill. Ownership inscription of H. T. Spencer on front pastedown. Head of spine chipped, head of front panel separating slightly at spine, minor foxing to edges, internally fine. A very good copy. Signed on the front free endpaper by Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson. All three actors appeared together in the film version of Richard III (1955), Olivier repeating his star turn as first seen on stage in the Old Vic London season in 1944. "With Ralph Richardson as a Buckingham wittily described by Paul Dehn as 'a Mr Baldwin who has read Machiavelli' (Dehn, 76) and John Gielgud as an exquisitely lyrical Clarence, the film also had a star power impossible to achieve at the Old Vic" (ODNB). It is more than likely that this book was signed by them during filming. The edition is the New Temple Shakespeare, first published thus in 1935, this impression dated 1950. From the library of John Gielgud, sold after his death.

        [The Novels:]

London: J. D. Dent & Sons Ltd,, 1950-55. Pride and Prejudice; Sense and Sensibility; Northanger Abbey; Persuasion; Mansfield Park; Emma. 6 works, octavo (180 × 117 mm). Near-contemporary red crushed morocco, spines lettered in gilt with gilt motifs, gilt rules to boards and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispiece and 15 colour plates to each volume. Spines sightly faded, internally fresh; an excellent set. An attractively bound set of the charmingly illustrated novels. C. E. Brock (1870-1938) first appeared as an illustrator of Jane Austen within Macmillan's 1895-7 series (with introductions by Austin Dobson), Brock illustrating only Pride and Prejudice, and Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. That series was illustrated in black and white, which better suited Thomson's skilful use of line. A decade later, J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite, this time in colour, and to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. Dent's "Series of English Idylls" thus presents the first Brock illustrations for the complete Austen set and the first in colour. Brock was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908, and certainly his vision of Austen's world, its gentle graces and sharp ironies, is best expressed, as here, in colour. Furthermore, the colourful costumes and interior decor depicted in these illustrations are reputedly accurate to the Regency period, for Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.

Congressman Kennedy uses his influence to obtain a shore assignment for a fellow veteran of the Solomon Island campaign where JFK gained renown for his exploits saving the crew of PT-109

"Typed Letter Signed, ""John Kennedy,"" as United States Representative, 1 page, 7.75"" x 10.5"" on his congressional letterhead, Washington, March 21, 1950 to John H. Artesani, a specialist aboard the U.S.S. Shenandoah responding to a request a shore duty assignment. Usual folds, small toned spot at left margin not affecting text, else very good. Kennedy writes in full: ""Further reference is made to your desire to secure an assignment to shore duty with the United States Navy. I am enclosing, herewith, a copy of the letter [not present] I have just received from Captain W. O. Burch, Head of the Enlisted Detailing Section of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Department of the Navy, Washington 25, D.C., which speaks for itself. I have contacted the Commander, Service Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, in your behalf, and shall keep you posted as to the results of my efforts in that direction."" Artesani (1926-2010), a Boston native, enlisted in the Navy in November 1942 and served on several ships including the U.S.S. O'Bannon, a Fletcher-class destroyer that served in the Solomon Islands at the same time Kennedy was commanding PT-109. In a twist of fate of which Kennedy was most likely unaware, Artesani's ship, the O'Bannon fought in the Battle of Kolombangara (July 12-13, 1943) which, although a tactical victory for the Japanese, proved to be a strategic loss as it forced their naval resupply ships (popularly known as the ""Tokyo Express"") to begin using the narrow Blackett Strait. In response, the U.S. Navy deployed torpedo boats (including Kennedy's) to harass Japanese ships plying the narrow strait between Kolombangara and Arundel Islands. On the night of August 2, the Japanese destroyer, Amagiri, returning from a resupply mission, rammed PT-109, splitting the craft in two. Artesani, aboard the O'Bannon, was more than likely within 50 miles of Kennedy when this occurred, as the destroyer was patrolling the nearby Vella Gulf. Kennedy's bravery in saving his crew garnered him national celebrity and in no small part launched his political career. The O'Bannon later served in the Philippines including engagements at Leyte Gulf, Bataan, Corregidor, and Cebu. The O'Bannon also had the honor of being one of the escorts for the U.S.S. Missouri when she entered Tokyo Bay in September 1945 in preparation for the Japanese surrender ceremonies. (Muster rolls of U.S. Navy ships, stations, and other naval activities, 1939-1949.)"

        THE DROWNING POOL

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1950 - Octavo, boards. The second Lew Archer novel. "A noirish, centrifugal amorality pervades Archer's world and The Drowning Pool does not conclude nicely or neatly. Yet this narrative ambiguity affirms the complexity of Macdonald's fiction, for as Archer observes bitterly at the denouement: "The happy endings and the biggest oranges were the ones that California saved for export." - Lucian Robinson, book review 9/1/2012 for The Guardian/The Observer. Basis for the Paul Newman film, the second in which he plays the Archer character, renamed Harper. Pederson (ed.), St. James Guide to Crime and Mystery Writers, (4th ed.), pp. 676-678. Upper corners gently bumped edges a little toned, a nearly fine copy in a better than very good dust jacket with some overall rubbing to black ink background of the jacket.         Marilyn Monroe boldly signs an attractive early contract for her appearance in a movie

"Document Signed, ""Marilyn Monroe,"" two pages, 8.5"" x 21.5"", [Beverly Hills, California], January 5, 1950, a yellow Screen Actors Guild freelance contract between Monroe and Thor Productions for her appearance as the character ""Polly"" in the 1950 film, The Fireball starring Mickey Rooney and Pat O'Brien (described in this document under the working title, ""Dark Challenge""). Countersigned by producer, ""Bert Friedlob"". File holes at top, light soiling at margins, horizontal crease, else very good to fine condition. The Fireball was the story of an orphan, ""Johnny"" (played by Rooney), who runs away from Father O'Hara's orphanage to become a roller-skating star. As his fame rises, he is chased by numerous women (including Polly) who he realizes love him only for his fame. Johnny then contracts polio and spends the balance of the film recovering. Monroe signed the contract at a relatively low point in her career. Just the year before, financial concerns prompted her to pose nude for a photo session. However, soon after The Fireball's release, Monroe's career began to gain momentum and she began booking roles in more serious films. That same year she auditioned for John Huston who cast her in Asphalt Jungle. Her performance brought strong reviews, as well as the the notice of Joseph Mankiewicz, who cast Monroe in All About Eve."
