Detection and Generation of Gravitational Waves" in Physical Review 117 No. 1, January 1, 1960, pp. 306-313

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE INVENTION OF THE FIRST GRAVITATIONAL WAVES DETECTOR. "The detection of gravitational waves is sometimes described as the Holy Grail of Modern Physics" (Blair, Advances Gravitational Wave Detectors, xvi). "The saga of gravitational wave detection goes back a long way: Einstein believed they existed but thought they were not physically detectable. Eddington queried their existence: he suggested that 'they travel at the speed of thought'. But in the 1950's Pirani, Feynman, Bondi and later Isaacson proved their physical reality, and in 1960 Joseph Weber began to develop his famous resonant mass detectors… (Blair, Advances Gravitational Wave Detectors, xvi). Weber's "famous resonant mass detector" "consisted of large vibration-isolated aluminium cylinders constructed with piezoelectric crystals glued on the surface near to the center. These crystals are able to develop a large voltage when they undergo deformation. A low noise amplifier and lock-in amplifier allowed detection of the energy of the fundamental longitudinal resonance of the bar. A gravitational wave applies a time-varying quadrupole deformation and does mechanical work on the fundamental acoustic modes of the test mass. "The absorption cross-section of the mechanical resonator to gravitational waves depends on its mass and sound velocity and is highest at the fundamental resonant frequency. The latter is linked to sound velocity and the resonator's length, since the length must be half an acoustic wavelength at the fundamental longitudinal resonance. Weber chose aluminum because of its high sound velocity, and availability in large pieces, and because it has quite low acoustic losses" (Blair ibid, 61). CONDITION & DETAILS: First edition in original wraps. Lancaster: American Physical Society 117, January 1, 1960. Near fine condition in every way.

        Signed monogrammed handkerchief.

c.1950. Cotton lawn handkerchief ( c.403 × 403 mm, a 16 inch square) with gilt paper die-cut and embossed "L.A." initials. A little discoloured in places, some spots, creases from old folds, lettering starting to lift, but the signature good and strong, overall very good. Remarkable signed example of Satchmo's ever-present handkerchief. We have been unable to trace another of similar design, but it is absolutely authentic, apparently obtained by an admirer after a concert in the early 50s, and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from James Spence, one of America's leading manuscript and autograph authenticators.

        I, ROBOT.

New York: Gnome Press, (1950) First printing. Very good in original red cloth with black lettering in a very good dust jacket (some light foxing to the edges of the textblock and the endpapers, offsetting to the endpapers, small white spot near lower corner of front board, corners slightly bumped, spine of dust jacket sunned to gray as is common with this title, minor edgewear and rubbing) Despite the flaws, this is overall a clean, tight and straight copy. Asimov's second book, a collection of nine interlocked stories tracing the development of robots over 75 years. The final story is "The Evitable Conflict" in which the machines that made the world of the 21st century an economic utopia take control of Mankind's future. Asimov's most influential book, this begins with his postulation of the "Three Laws of Robotics." Basis for the film of the same title. 253 pp.

[Photo Album]: Palestinian Refugees in Jordan

[Circa 1950]. Oblong octavo. String tied green cloth. Blank black leaves with tissue guards for each page. Small label on rear pastedown of "Persekian, Book-Binder / Box-Maker, New Gate, Jerusalem." Near fine with slight wear on the boards; the images fine. 19 glossy gelatin silver photos, each approximately 4" x 6", mounted one per leaf. The majority captioned in English with white album pen. The images depict Palestinian refugees being given aid at Kasr el Halibat [Qasr Al-Hallabat], Jordan by the Near East Combined Committee for Refugee Work (also known by its acronym NECCRW). The images show Bedouin children and adults happily collecting their goats or textiles, Sheiks of the Othman Bedouin meeting with NECCCRW representatives and the desert patrol, and Bedouin camps. While the images are relatively few, they are well-done and show a little documented element of the upheaval in the region. .

Le salaire la peur [The Wages of Fear] (First Edition, inscribed, with signed photo of Yves Montand)

Paris: Julliard, 1950. First French Edition, preceding the British and American editions by two years. Review copy, with the letters "S.P." (Service de Presse) printed on the lower right corner of the rear panel. INSCRIBED by Arnaud to author and literary critic Marcel Arland on the half-title page: "A Monsieur Marcel Arland, cordial homage de Georges Arnaud." Together with this copy is an original black and white photograph of Yves Montand, INSCRIBED by him in the lower left corner: "en tout sympathie - Yves Montand." The story of Arnaud and Arland's association is interesting, and tied to Arnaud's mysterious criminal case. In October 1941, Arnaud allegedly came home to find his father, aunt, and one of the help gruesomely murdered. The circumstances were damning, and a combination of presumptions, public rumor, and a capricious judge appeared to guarantee Arnaud a trip to the guillotine. During the 19 months of incarceration prior to the author's trial, Arland was a fierce advocate for the author's release, writing a number of articles in his defense for the major French newspapers. Six months after the trial opened, Arnaud's lawyer, Maurice Garçon (who had successfully defended Jean Genet at his obscenity trial for "Our Lady of the Flowers") managed to convince a jury that his client was innocent, secured his release, and all charges were dropped. The novel was a huge success in France, selling more than two million copies. The story ultimately served as the basis for the classic 1953 French film noir "The Wages of Fear," directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot and starring Yves Montand and Charles Vanel. A superb historical association. About Fine in wrappers, with a trace of toning to the spine. Photograph Near Fine.

29 autograph messages and one autograph letter signed ("Dix"), two of which have hand drawings.

      N. p., [c. 1950]. - Various formats. Highly perfunctory letter, probably to the violinist Hanni Rocco (1896-1990), whom Dix had met in the 1940s in the Höri artists' colony and who had lived in Hemmenhofen with her friend Maria Proells until 1953. Dix informs her that she can obtain his work from the Klihm Gallery and requests her not to bother him with trifling matters, in view of his laziness and copious correspondence. - The messages, most of them rather short, are probably to Roccos companion, the pianist and painter Maria Proelss (1892-1962), and concern forthcoming visits, various requests, etc. (with occasional references to "Miss Rocco"). Some of these are written on clipped slips of paper (including 3 military letters and 2 fragments of cigarette boxes); one postcard bears the drawing of a little girl with a flower.

Flirtatious note from Ms.Nin to a gentleman who had previously wanted to write a story about her, telling him that, now, the time may be right for that - and including her phone number. Date of this piece not known, but might be deduced from her phone number, by a Nin authority. Such an expert may also know who the gentleman in question is. And, for that matter, it may not even be a gentleman. Near fine condition, just a bit toned from the years, not much, and no other flaws. See scans. A neat and very "that's-so-HER" little piece of manuscript ephemera from the world of, and history of, literature - from a time when there were such things. Today, she would have just texted the guy. You can't collect that. L52 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Physicist Robert Oppenheimer, Father of the Atomic Bomb, asks Polaroid Land Camera inventor Edwin H. Land to once again serve on Harvard's Committee to Visit the Department of Physics - "Our task does not seem difficult to me, but it does not seem to me without importance"

Princeton, New Jersey, April 4, 1950. 8.5" x 11". "Typed Letter Signed ""Robert Oppenheimer"" as Director, 1 page, 8.5"" x 11"". On stationery of The Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, April 4, 1950. To Edwin H. Land, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Tiny staple holes in slightly creased upper left corner. Three file holes in left blank margin. Fine condition. In full, ""At the request of the Executive Committee of the Board of Overseers of Harvard College, I am writing to you to enquire whether you would be willing again to serve on the Committee to Visit the Department of Physics. May I express my personal hope that you will be willing to serve. Our task does not seem difficult to me, but it does not seem to me without importance.""Scientist and inventor Edwin H. Land (1909-1991) was a co-founder of the Polaroid Corporation. He was responsible for many photography-related inventions such inexpensive filters that polarized light, his retinex theory for color vision, and his practical system for in-camera instant photos. His Polaroid Land camera, which went on sale in late 1948, made it possible for a picture to be taken and developed in just 60 seconds or even less.Under Robert Oppenheimer's guidance, the laboratories at Los Alamos were constructed. There, he brought the best minds in physics to work on the problem of creating an atomic bomb. The joint work of the scientists at Los Alamos resulted in the first nuclear explosion at Alamogordo on July 16, 1945, which Oppenheimer named ""Trinity."" After the war, Oppenheimer was appointed Chairman of the General Advisory Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), serving from 1947 to 1952. From 1947 to 1966, Oppenheimer also served as Director of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. There, he stimulated discussion and research on quantum and relativistic physics in the School of Natural Sciences."

        [Calligraphic Artist's Book]: John Gilpin

[No place]: Pamela F. F. Wrightson. 1950. Quarto. P. [3], 21, [1]. Hand bound in half green morocco gilt and decorated papercovered boards. Edgewear at the extremities of the spine and corners, the binding is very good, internally fine. Calligraphic presentation of the poem in black, red, and green, with gilt decorated capital initial, and a small vignette. Colophon reads: "This poem was written out by Pamela F.F. Wrightson during the Summer and Autumn 1950". We can find little about Wrightson, except that she was British and referenced in some textbooks and studies on calligraphy. Handsomely produced, the binding could probably benefit from some simple furbishment. .
