        Kon-Tiki.

Chicago: Rand McNally & Company,, 1950. Across the Pacific by raft. Translated by F. H. Lyon. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blind-stamped design to front cover. With the dust jacket. With 20 leaves of photographic plates. An excellent copy in the dust jacket, spine panel lightly faded, extremities very slightly chipped. First US edition, originally published in Norway in 1948. The Kon-Tiki expedition was undertaken by the explorer Thor Heyerdahl to prove that Polynesia was settled from South America by a mixed race who travelled by raft. Their replica raft, named after the Incan sun god Kon-Tiki, was wrecked on a reef 98 days later. "A dramatic, designedly primitive, and adventure-filled voyage, this was the prototype for other voyages designed to prove various things about ancient people and voyages" (Toy). As the author observes, the trip proved that the journey by raft was possible, even if it does not irrefutably prove that it was by this means that the Pacific islands were settled. His account has since become a classic, and the raft is now preserved in the Kon-Tiki museum of Oslo. Lyon's translation was also published the same year in Britain by Allen & Unwin, without known primacy. With a tipped in 16 page magazine special feature on the voyage.

        Canals, Barges and People.

Art and Technics 1950 - FIRST EDITION, 24 full-page wood-engravings colour-printed in two or more colours, and 22 other wood-engravings, placed as vignettes or head and tail-pieces, a few spots to half-title, pp. 96, 8vo, original quarter maroon cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt, patterned pink and white boards, top edge red with a few pinprick foxspots to other edges, endpaper maps with some very faint browning and foxing, bookplate of John Lewis to verso of flyleaf, dustjacket bright with a few spots and handling marks, chipping to corners and ends of backstrip panel, very good. One of only 1,000 copies printed, this inscribed by the author on the half-title: 'To ABO'C from JO'C and in memory of VFO'C, 1950'; the recipient was his mother, Annie Besant O'Connor, and the remembered his father (posthumous dedicatee of O'Connor's 'A Pattern of People') Vernon Feargus O'Connor. An excellent and poignant association. This was latterly the copy of typographer and author John Lewis, with a typed copy of his contemporary review loosely inserted.

Walk Softly, Stranger (Original Film Poster)

Los Angeles: Dore Schary Productions / RKO Radio Pictures, 1950. Original one sheet poster for the 1950 film noir. An off-beat, low-key story that exists somewhere between crime story and romance, with a typically restrained Joseph Cotten as a petty crook with a heart of gold, trying desperately to reform, and Alida Valli (who shared an earlier bill with Cotten in "The Third Man") as a wheelchair-bound girl he meets at exactly the wrong time. One last heist awaits, and decisions have to be made. A striking poster from the classic noir cycle, a film completed in 1948 but not released until 1950. 27 x 41 inches (105 x 89 cm), linen-backed. Near Fine. Neibaur 952. Selby US.

Reflections in a Golden Eye. Introduction by Tennessee Williams

1950 - The New Classics Series. Small 8vo., original buff cloth, dust jacket. New York, New Directions. Signed by Williams and McCullers on the front free endpaper. The friendship between Williams and McCullers began as a correspondence, but they soon became close friends after Williams had invited McCullers to stay with him at his secluded writing retreat in Nantucket. Williams described this period in a piece for Saturday Review of Literature : ? . for the first time I found it completely comfortable to work in the same room with another writer. We read each other our day's work over our after-dinner drinks and she gave me the heart to continue a play that I feared was hopeless. When I told her that I thought my creative powers were exhausted, she said to me wisely and truly, an artist always feels that dread, that terror when he has completed a work to which has been so totally committed that the finishing of it seems to have finished him too, that what he lives for is gone like yesteryears snow?         [Photo Album]: Alaska

Alaska, 1950. Very Good. Oblong quarto. String-tied red leather over paper boards with a flower illustrations and stamped decorations measuring 11.5" x 15". Assembled within the album are 64 black and white photographs measuring 4" x 5" to 10.5" x 7.5". Very good plus with some wear on the album edges and short tears. A collection of 64 photographs from the Alaskan territory in the late 1940s, less than a decade after completion of the Alaskan highway. Present are images of white Americans and military men, along with native Alaskans in traditional clothing posing in the snow with sled dogs and various snow equipment including a snowcat. Most of the photographs are full page images showing life in the Alaskan wilderness complete with close ups of native embroidery, the arctic landscape, and strange ways of bundling up entirely from the cold, seen here with a man dressed in an unusual face mask and full winter gear. Between 1930 and 1950 air travel had become increasingly important to the citizens of the territory; at least five pictures show pilots and engineers working on planes parked on a snowy run way. A wonderful group of images from early in the state's history.
