NEPWA POLISH 1St year school reader

WINNIPEG: A.HHOMIK, 1950 Known to its aboriginal dwellers as a good hunting and gathering area, Neepawa in fact means "Land of Plenty" in the Cree language. Early fur traders and settlers knew Neepawa as an area of stable lcimate, good soils and abundant harvests. When the Province of Manitoba was established in 1870, the Neepawa area lay within what was then known as "The Northwest Territories", just to the west of the postage stamp province. During the next 30 years, a wave of settlers descended upon the area. The feverish activity established the framework on which the present day community was built. The first settlers came from the British Isles and groups of Eastern European settlers soon followed. The most notable of these was the Hun's Valley Settlement, a colony of Polish and Hungarian settlers.

        Some Notes on No. 26

San Francisco, CA: Three Fingers Press, 1950. Soft Cover. Very Good. 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall. Book shows a publication date of 1950, but it was actually released in 1951. Handcrafted, string bound, heavy card wrappers with 14 uncut leaves upon which are mounted a number of original photographs and ephemera relating to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad's heavy Ten-Wheeler locomotive, No. 26. Very nice shape. There are over 20 original photographs and significant pieces of ephemera that "have with loving care been gathered, collated, hand set, pasted, bound up and cursed into book form . . . on the first anniversary of the demise of V & T No. 26." The book includes a signed 3-page essay about the demise of small railroads and a description of the loss of the No. 26 in an engine-house fire in 1950. Photographs include images of the train at work as well as its flaming destruction. The ephemera includes a 1876 V&T bank check, a 1878 invoice, a timetable, and a bill of lading. The author was a mining engineer and research mineralogist who worked for the Aurora Creek Gold Mining Company and at Stanford University's School of Mineral Sciences, where he published a number of scholarly articles and monographs. A rabid rail fan, Beatty focused his hobby on the railroads of Nevada and Eastern California. Although unspecified, the distribution of this work was no doubt quite limited. Very scarce. As of 2016, no examples are listed in OCLC, no auction records are reported by ABPC or Rare Book Hub, and only one other copy is for sale (for $2,000) in the trade.

        Six Modern One-Act Plays

London: University of London Press 1950 - FIRST EDITION, thus. SIGNED BY JOHN LENNON. Octavo, pp.160. Publisher's softcovers. Some soiling and associated reading wear. An interesting school text-book borrowed by Lennon whilst a student at Quarry Bank School, Liverpool. Lennon has signed the lending stamp to the inside cover 'J[ohn] W[inston] Lennon, IVC', and dated this '1955'. The details have been crossed through by the subsequent reader in 1961-2. This signed library book represents an especially early autograph from the future Beatle, at this time aged just 14; 'The Quarrymen' band was formed by John aged 15 and was named after the high school noted within this volume. Music aside, the subject of the book has a clear link to his later career as a dramatist; Lennon co-wrote the play 'A Spaniard In the Works' with Victor Spinetti and starred in the film 'How I Won the War'. An important item, accompanied by a statement of provenence from Paul Wane one of the world's most respected Beatles specialists. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Der zweite Weltkrieg * 10 Bände, jeweils als H A L B F R A N Z B A N D / H A L B L E D E R - H a n d e i n b a n d

Hamburg, J.P.Toth Verlag, 1950. The Chronicles of Narnia Set: The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew, The Last Battle. Copy

Geofrey Bles 1950-1956, London - First British editions of each of the seven volumes in the author's acclaimed Narnia Series. Octavo, 7 volumes. Each is finely bound in full red morocco, raised bands, gilt titles to the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Illustrations throughout by Pauline Baynes. Octavo, seven volumes. An exceptional set. The Chronicles of Narnia is "unforgettable not only for the excitement and suspense of the adventures but also for the strong emotions they describe so well [and they are] further enriched by Lewis' skillful use of language" (Silvey, 406). "Each book has something new and different to offer and there is no weakening of either inspiration or interest" (Eyre, 132). It is interesting that Lewis' inspiration came from a dream: "At first I had very little idea how the story would go. But then suddenly Aslan came bounding into it. I think I had been having a good many dreams of lions about that time[O]nce he was there, he pulled the whole story together, and soon he pulled the six other Narnian stories in after him (On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature, 1980). Lewis was "concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction to re-imagine thestory in an exciting narrative context [The Narnia books are] intoxicating to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative of readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th-century author" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 370).         [Photo Album]: 1950 Automotive Road Trip

[Circa 1950]. Quarto commercial album. Measuring approximately 10.25" x 7.25". A total of 88 leaves with the first 37 containing 123 black and white photographs and photo postcards dry set in corner mounts on the versos and rectos (the final pages are unused). Overall very good plus or better. Album of photographs and real photo postcards chronicling a 1950 road trip, primarily along U.S. Highways 66, 180, and 83 through Eastern New Mexico then South through Texas, following the U.S.-Mexico border capturing scenic views in and around areas including Carlsbad, Pharr, El Paso, and Corpus Christi. Many images taken across the dashboard of a 1937 Plymouth Coupe, in a classic "through-the-windshield" style, beautifully capturing life on the road in the American Southwest. A quintessential album of postwar automotive Americana, embodying the spirit of the open road and eerily evoking Kerouac's On the Road, written at roughly the same time and inspired by many of these same highways. .

Autograph letter signed "Benjamin [?]Br" to the noted English composer, broadcaster, and writer on music Antony Hopkins.

2 pp. Octavo (ca. 176 x 137 mm). Dated July 6, 1950. In ink on stationery with "4 Crabbe St. Aldeburgh, Suffolk" printed at head. Britten warmly thanks "Tony" for writing an overture for the Aldeburgh Festival, which Britten, Peter Pears, and Eric Crozier had founded in 1948. He apologizes for not writing sooner, and for not spending more time with Hopkins and his wife, Alison, during the Festival. "... [the Overture] made an extremely brilliant effect, and was a perfect opening piece for what, I think, turned out to be a nice concert. I especially admired the restraint & skill in writing for the small body of performers. The performance seemed fine - I hope you were pleased... I was sorry not to see more of you & Alison - but the whole social business of the week gets a bit out of hand... Thank you again for your kindness, promptness & skill in writing the overture." Slightly worn and soiled; creased at fold and slightly overall; minor foxing to small area of verso. / Hopkins's Festival Overture was first performed at the Aldeburgh Festival on June 24, 1950, in Aldeburgh Parish Church, conducted by the composer. Of the work, Hopkins writes: "Judge of my surprise when I received a letter from Benjamin Britten asking me to write a short Festival Overture for the then comparatively new Aldeburgh Festival. It was to be for a tiny band - just 11 strings and 2 trumpets. I had earlier dedicated my first opera to Britten and this may have been a kindly reciprocal gesture. I duly wrote this piece and tried to finish it triumphantly, despite the small resources. My 'triumph' was received in total silence - I had forgotten that the performance was given in the local church, and in those days applause wasn't allow in churches. Surely the angels wouldn't mind? Anyway, to this day, it was the biggest anti-climax of my life, and I slunk out of the building a broken spirit." From Goodmusic Publishers online. After its first publication, the Festival Overture was named Aldeburgh Festival Suite. "[Britten] and his contemporary Michael Tippett are among several pairs of composers who dominated English art music in the 20th century. Of their music, Britten?s early on achieved, and has maintained, wider international circulation." Philip Brett et al. in Grove Music Online.

A quintessential album of postwar automotive Americana, embodying the spirit of the open road and eerily evoking Kerouac's On the Road, written at roughly the same time and inspired by many of these same highways. .
