Tiger im Schlamm / Die 2./ schw. Pz.-Abt. 502 vor Narwa und Dünaburg

Neckargemünd, A. Schumann´s Verlag, 1950. (noch zu Nr.3354:) \". .

A large, well designed poster map shows plane, train and boat connections between resorts on the Croatian Dalmatian coast, Alps in Slovenia and a spa resort Aran?elovac in Serbia. The map was made to advertise low cost, high quality holidays for all the workers of post World War II Yugoslavia under the new government. The map can be dated around 1950, when the north west part of Istria still belonged to the Free State of Trieste since the end of WWII in 1945, before it was divided between Italy, which got Trieste, and Yugoslavia.

[Photo Album]: British Expatriates in India and Pakistan 1930-1950

India and Pakistan, 1950. Near Fine. Oblong folio measuring 11" x 14". String-tied blue cloth over paper boards with "album" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 147 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 4" x 6" with some captions. Very good photo album with rubbing and worn corners with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a family of British expatriates while living in India and what is now Pakistan from 1930 until 1950. The family lived on a large estate and bred horses, dogs, and other small animals during the years they spent in India. The horses were the prize possessions of the home with numerous photos showing the beautiful animals owned by the family, including Seagull a 15 year old white horse, George, and Koppa, who can be seen throughout the album performing jumps. A handful of the photographs have been handcolored by the young woman who kept the album and show the Taj Mahal, as well as locals helping retrieve a car from a ferry. Many of the photos show the family hiking around the mountains of India and boating on its many rivers. A group of 10 laid in photographs show a number of men in uniform speaking to a group with images of planes on an easel and the American flag behind them. It is probable they were part of the American Air Force showing off new technology to the upper class British in India to garner support for projects in World War II. In the album a few military men are mentioned and seem being friends of the family including a Major Kilroy, who is seen horseback riding, as well as a Major Trafford. It also appears from a photo captioned "Daddy" of a man on a horse in a military uniform that the head of the household was part of the British military.A look into the lives of the British upper class in India over two decades through better than average amateur photography.

KOREA - TURKISH BRIGADE: YURTTA SULH, CIHANDA SULH [PEACE AT HOME, PEACE IN THE WORLD].

[Turkey, between -1953]. 1950 - Black and white photograph with added original manuscript colour (longer old repaired tears, otherwise in a good condition), 45 x 65 cm. A large, originally hand-coloured photograph with a map of Asia, centred on Korea, was made in the early 1950s in Turkey, to commemorate a member of the Turkish Brigade, fighting in the Korean War. A large, unusual photomontage and hand retouched photograph shows a map of Korea, China, Japan, and a part of Siberia, a female figure, a personification of Turkey, wearing a Turkish flag, a torch and a sign Yurtta sulh, cihanda sulh [Peace at Home, Peace in the World], a portrait of a Turkish soldier and an image of a fighting soldier. The photograph was made between 1950-1953, when the Turkish Brigade, with a code name North Star, served with the United Nations Command during the Korean War. The Turkish Army joined the Korean War as a proof of their loyalty to NATO, just before joining it in 1952. Over the course of Korean War Turkey circulated almost 15,000 troops through the country, of which no more than 5,000 troops were present at anyone time. Although the Turkish soldiers proved to be good, stubborn and loyal fighters, there was a large language barrier with other soldiers, as most of the Turks, including their leaders, did not speak a word of English, what resulted in many misunderstandings and unnecessary casualties. The losses for the Turkish Brigade in Korea was 721 killed in action, 2,111 wounded and 168 missing. The phrase Yurtta sulh, cihanda sulh (Peace at Home, Peace in the World) was first pronounced by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on 20 April 1931 to the public during his tours of Anatolia. Since then it became regarded as a central principle of the state administration and any state activities. We could not find any other similar items on the market not in institutions. The photograph was made very expensively in the early 1950s and because of its large size the survival rate of such objects would be very small.

Mississippi, 1950. Near Fine. Oblong quarto. String-tied brown leather over paper boards with an illustration on the cover measuring 10" x 13". A collection of 140 black and white and one color photographs most measuring 3.5" x 5.5" with a few 8" x 10", with captions. Very good minus with spotting, wear on the edges, tears, and a few missing photos. An extensively captioned photo album from a boat cruise on the Mississippi up to the mouth of the Ohio river during the 1950s via the Union Barge Line. Every page includes a detailed description of the sites such as, "the smallest park in the world where Father Hennepin first saw the St. Anthony Falls," next to a photograph of Lucy Wilder Morris Park. Under a photo of the captain is says, "he gave us a lot of information about 'Old Man River.'" The banks of the Mississippi are carefully cataloged, construction, damns, and bridges all documented. The trip took the tourists up to the mouth of the Ohio River which can be seen here. "At a bend in the Ohio River where we could see a long view up stream, the tower dam waking, it's more like a long lake than a live river. It was fascinating." A complete and well organized documenting the Mississippi and it's landscape.

        Kon-Tiki.

Chicago: Rand McNally & Company,, 1950. Across the Pacific by raft. Translated by F. H. Lyon. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blind-stamped design to front cover. With the dust jacket. With 20 leaves of photographic plates. An excellent copy in the dust jacket, spine panel lightly faded, extremities very slightly chipped. First US edition, originally published in Norway in 1948. The Kon-Tiki expedition was undertaken by the explorer Thor Heyerdahl to prove that Polynesia was settled from South America by a mixed race who travelled by raft. Their replica raft, named after the Incan sun god Kon-Tiki, was wrecked on a reef 98 days later. "A dramatic, designedly primitive, and adventure-filled voyage, this was the prototype for other voyages designed to prove various things about ancient people and voyages" (Toy). As the author observes, the trip proved that the journey by raft was possible, even if it does not irrefutably prove that it was by this means that the Pacific islands were settled. His account has since become a classic, and the raft is now preserved in the Kon-Tiki museum of Oslo. Lyon's translation was also published the same year in Britain by Allen & Unwin, without known primacy. With a tipped in 16 page magazine special feature on the voyage.

Walk Softly, Stranger (Original Film Poster)

Los Angeles: Dore Schary Productions / RKO Radio Pictures, 1950. Original one sheet poster for the 1950 film noir. An off-beat, low-key story that exists somewhere between crime story and romance, with a typically restrained Joseph Cotten as a petty crook with a heart of gold, trying desperately to reform, and Alida Valli (who shared an earlier bill with Cotten in "The Third Man") as a wheelchair-bound girl he meets at exactly the wrong time. One last heist awaits, and decisions have to be made. A striking poster from the classic noir cycle, a film completed in 1948 but not released until 1950. 27 x 41 inches (105 x 89 cm), linen-backed. Near Fine. Neibaur 952. Selby US.

Reflections in a Golden Eye. Introduction by Tennessee Williams

1950 - The New Classics Series. Small 8vo., original buff cloth, dust jacket. New York, New Directions. Signed by Williams and McCullers on the front free endpaper. The friendship between Williams and McCullers began as a correspondence, but they soon became close friends after Williams had invited McCullers to stay with him at his secluded writing retreat in Nantucket. Williams described this period in a piece for Saturday Review of Literature : ? . for the first time I found it completely comfortable to work in the same room with another writer. We read each other our day's work over our after-dinner drinks and she gave me the heart to continue a play that I feared was hopeless. When I told her that I thought my creative powers were exhausted, she said to me wisely and truly, an artist always feels that dread, that terror when he has completed a work to which has been so totally committed that the finishing of it seems to have finished him too, that what he lives for is gone like yesteryears snow? A near fine copy in a slightly rubbed and price-clipped dust jacket, lightly faded on the spine. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
