        AN ALPHABET FOR GOURMETS. Inscribed

New York: The Viking Press, 1949. New York: The Viking Press,, 1949 Fisher, M.F.K. AN ALPHABET FOR GOURMETS. Inscribed Copy. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. First Edition. 8vo., 256pp. Publisher's mauve cloth stamped in black & white (with a charming black & white stamp of a Roman feaster on the upper cover). [Marvin Bileck, illustrator]. Warmly inscribed by Fisher on the ffe.: "For the [____] / Berkeley, 28.V.57 / from a fellow connoisseur of chilis vellanos - / M.F.K. Fisher" A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, mildly faded at the spine as usual - the chocolate brown colour easily subject to sunning. Delightful drawings illustrate each letter of the alphabet: A is for dining Alone, B is for Bachelors, G is for Gluttony, E is for Exquisite, K is for Kosher; P is for Peas, W is for Wanton, Y is for Yak, Z is for Zakuski, "a Russian hors d'oeuvre", etc. In Alphabet for Gourmets, M.F.K. Fisher arranges a selection of her essays in a whimsical way that reveals the breadth & depth of her passion. Fisher alights on both long-time obsessions & idiosyncratic digressions. As usual, she liberates her readers from caution & slavish adherence to culinary tradition - & salts her writings with a healthy dose of humour. Books of the Century, pp. 114-15. Very uncommon Inscribed.. Signed by Author. First Edition.

Photo Album Thailand and Asia including the Funeral of King Rama VII

Europe & Asia 1949 - Bangkok, Bali, Kashmir, China, 1949. Photograph album compiled by a Western European couple on an Asiatic cruise, featuring several exquisite and exotic countries on the Indochina peninsula and throughout Southeast Asia, such as Bangkok and Bali, as well as Kashmir in India, China, Japan, and on the voyage home, a tour of Italy. Contains 162 photographs and 12 postcards from Asiatic nations, plus 39 photographs and 33 postcards from Europe. Neatly mounted to 41 leafs, with locations captioned in manuscript, photographs vary in size, most measuring approximately 5.25 x 3.25, the smallest measuring approximately 2.5 x 3.25 inches. Folio, original album leafs in a recent black cloth binding. Unobtrusive tears to a few leaves, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Mainly highlighting Bangkok in Siam and Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley, a party of four Europeans embark on an expansive care-free Asiatic tour extending from the Himalaya mountain region to East Asia and Indonesia, captured in 174 views. Especially interesting and scarce are the photographs from Bangkok, the travellers' arrival coinciding with a grand public event in honour of Thai King Rama VII, more commonly known as Ratchakan thi Chet by his people, the seventh and last absolute monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri, for the return of his cremated ashes to his homeland from London, eight years after his death. Extraordinary canal scenes illustrate indigenous ways of life and work, including riverside villages of stilt raised dwellings. Two photographs are taken of a modest ceremony for the ordination of a priest taking place within the city, and one observes a snake charmer. There are 30 photographs and 2 photographic postcards from Bangkok; eight photographs capture the large and formal public funeral ceremony.

        NINETEEN EIGHTY FOUR

Secker & Warburg , 1949. Secker & Warburg , 1949. First edition. Original green cloth with red lettering on the spine in maroon dustwrapper. A near fine book, slight ghosting from the dustwrapper to the upper cover. The dustwrapper in the preferred red, which has some light fading and minor wear to the spine top. One of the highlights and prophetic writings of the twentieth century. Orwell began writing Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1945, knowing that he would need to change publisher in order to see it in print. As he had found with Animal Farm, Orwell's novels were now opposed to Gollancz's political principles, and so it was the firm of Secker & Warburg (also the publishers of Animal Farm) who took on the book. The book was due to be finished in early 1948, though when the time came Orwell told his publishers "It is just a ghastly mess as it stands, but the idea is so good that I could not possibly abandon it." It was published in June 1949 and by October had sold over 22,000 copies. Such phrases as 'Double Think', 'Newspeak' and 'Big Brother' coined in the book have since become common parlance and the novel a cornerstone of dystopian literature.         The Tears of the Blind Lions

New Directions 1949 - 1135151156 1949 rare signed and inscribed first edition New Directions (NY), 5 3/8 x 8 3/8 inches tall green cloth hardbound in publisher's unclipped ($1.25) dust jacket, nicely preserved in a clear archival sleeve. Covers mildly sun-faded and edgeworn. Inside, normal age-toning to the paper for this issue. Otherwise, a very good copy in a mildly sun faded and lightly creased dust jacket. All nicely preserved and presented in a Brodart rare book box, made from archival-quality, acid-free, lignin-free stock, securely held in place by Velcro buttons, with the title page reproduced on the front of the box, title to spine, and inscribed half title on the back of the box. Inscribed by Merton on the half title in red ink, 'with my prayers & best wishes,' and signed in his religious name, Fr. M. Louis, O.C.S.O. Underneath, his superior at the Abbey of Gethsemani, Dom James Fox, Merton's abbot from 1948 through 1968, inscribed and signed in blue ink, along with his customary stamp, 'all for jesus thru mary with a smile.' Merton's cloistered existence and accidental death at the age of 53 make inscribed first editions quite uncommon. Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was one of the most influential Catholic authors of the 20th century. He became a Trappist postulent in 1941, and made his temporary profession vows in 1944, the year his first book, a collection of poetry, was published. In 1947, he took his solemn vows, a commitment to live out his life at the monastery, and the following year his autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, was issued to critical acclaim. It quickly became one of the best selling books in America, and later abroad, a first for a 'religious' book. Abbot Frederic Dunne died on August 3, 1948, and his passing was painful for Merton, who had come to look at the Abbot as a father figure and spiritual mentor. Abbot Dunne was replaced by Dom James Fox on August 15, 1948. Dom Fox, who also signed (and inscribed) the book for sale here, was a former U.S. Navy officer, and up to the challenge of sometimes tangling with Merton despite the writer's rising celebrity. On January 5, 1949, Merton, then a French citizen, took a train to Louisville and applied for U.S. citizenship. It was one of his most productive years as a writer. Published that year, in addition to the book for sale here, were 'Seeds of Contemplation,' 'The Waters of Siloe' and the British edition of 'The Seven Storey Mountain' under the title 'Elected Silence.' He was ordained a priest later in that same year. In subsequent years, Merton would author many other books and amass a wide readership. One's place in society, views on social activism and various approaches toward contemplative prayer and living became constant themes in his writings. 'Tears of the Blind Lion' was relatively well received, but his poetry had a much smaller audience than most of Merton's prose. Late in his career, Merton - who could be very self-critical - divided his books into six gradations of quality: 'best,' 'better,' 'good,' 'fair,' 'poor' and 'bad.' He listed none of his works in the top category, 'best.' But he listed this work, 'Tears of the Blind Lions,' in the next category, 'better,' along with two other books of poetry, 'Thirty Poems' and 'Emblems of a Season of Fury.' Merton died in Bangkok at an inter-religious conference on December 10, 1968, having touched a poorly grounded electric fan while stepping out of his bath. His body was flown back to Gethsemani where he is buried. Since his death, Merton's influence has continued to grow. The International Thomas Merton Society was formed in 1987 to study the huge body of scholarship left behind, and today the organization boasts more than 38 active chapters in the US and 19 affiliates abroad.

. Emballages soignes, expedition rapide. Photographies originales du livre visibles sur librairie-solstices .

This edition was being prepared at the time of Yeats's death in 1940. The canny publishers hastened to prepare the limitation leaf and have the great man sign his share. The war then intervened and not until 1949 was this magnificent piece of scholarship and editing was published. It is a noteworthy member of a small band of book - the Posthumous Signed Limited Edition. Yeats of course was a constant reviser of his work which makes this definitive edition all the more important.
