The Little Sister

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company 1949 - First American edition, first printing. Publisher's red-orange cloth, with a dagger illustrations stamped in navy to the front board, spine lettered in navy; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Boris Artzybasheff. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and minor chipping to the extremities, usual toning to the spine, short closed tear to the panel edges, some light soiling to the rear panel, bright spine and front panel. Overall, a very good, attractive copy. Bruccoli A8.2. The Little Sister is the fifth detective novel in Chandler's series featuring his protagonist Detective Philip Marlowe, "the most exciting high-velocity private investigator in the business." Unlike Dashiell Hammett's Continental Op and Sam Spade, who are widely considered the archetypal hard-boiled detective figures, Marlowe possesses a sensitivity underneath his tough exterior that distinguishes him from similar detective characters in the genre. Like many of Chandler's novels, The Little Sister is set in Los Angeles and the novel illuminates much of the day to day life in that city. Specifically, The Little Sister involves Hollywood and the film industry, focusing on the younger sister of a rising starlet. Despite the slightly more sensitive nature of Chandler's detective, The Little Sister is classic hard-boiled detective fiction with all of the austerity and ruggedness that hallmarks the genre. As the dust jacket proclaims, "Chandler is the master is of his own brand of vernacular and sets it down as if he were a divinely appointed recording angel to the tough guy." Primes...calculated by the EDSAC 10 May 1949 AND The coordinating orders (first sheet only)

Cambridge, 1949. Wheeler, David. (1) Primes . . . calculated by the Edsac 10 May 1949. Single dittoed typescript sheet. [Cambridge, 1949.] 255 x 202 mm. (2) The co-ordinating orders. Dittoed typescript. First sheet only (of three). [Cambridge, 1949.] 255 x 202 mm. Together 2 items. Both sheets a little creased, minor text loss on no. (2) due to faulty registration, otherwise very good.
Two examples of the materials issued to participants in the "Conference on high speed automatic calculating-machines" held at Cambridge in June 1949. This was the first computer conference held in England, and the first computer conference at which an operational stored-program computer (the EDSAC) was demonstrated.

"For the demonstration two short programs were run: the first, written by Wilkes, printed a table of squares; the second [no. (1)], written by David Wheeler, printed out prime numbers" (Williams and Campbell-Kelly, The Early British Computer Conferences, xiii).

The EDSAC, designed and built by Maurice Wilkes and his team at the Cambridge Mathematical Laboratory, had become fully operational only a few weeks before the conference. No. (2) is a portion of a dittoed draft of Wheeler's paper, "Planning the use of a paper library," which was published in the conference proceedings in 1950. This is the paper that first described the way in which the EDSAC would deal with subroutines and how information was passed to them and back again to the main program. This subject proved to be of the utmost importance and ranks with the invention of the index register (B-line) at Manchester as one of the fundamental developments which made modern computing possible. From that point of view this draft (obviously passed around during the conference) is a very significant document. See Wilkes 1985, 146-47. Origins of Cyberspace 1020-6 and 1020-8.

HUMAN ACTION A Treatise on Economics

Yale University Press, New Haven 1949 - 904 pages; Book is clean and tight in publisher's gray cloth binding in original dustjacket which has some edgewear and two small chips to front panel and one dime sized chip at head of spine. An extremely nice example of the scarce first printing of this monumental treatise on economics. Ludwig Heinrich Edler Von Mises (1881 – 1973) was an Austrian School economist, sociologist, and classical liberal. A prominent figure in the Austrian School of economic thought, he is best known for his work on praxeology, the study of human choice and action. Von Mises immigrated to the United States in 1940, where his thought significantly influenced the libertarian movement in in the mid-20th century. In this treatise Human Action, Von Mises expounds upon praxeology as a general conceptual foundation of the social sciences and sets forth his methodological approach to economics. He concluded that the only viable economic policy is one of unrestricted free markets and the unhampered rights of private property, with the role of government strictly limited to the territorial defense of persons and property. - Though Kent is better associated with his illustrations for Melville's "Moby Dick" and Voltaire's "Candide," his corespondent has apparently made an intriguing request of the artist that he consider his illustrations for "Bab Ballads" by W. S. Gilbert, and Lewis Carroll's "Hunting the Snark." Kent writes to an English professor referring to books of verses he illustrated. "With the exception of 'The Hunting of the Snark,' the 'Bab Ballads,' and such things which I have over and over again thoroughly enjoyed, I must say that 'enjoyment' is not the term for the deep emotion.that greater poetry has roused in me, I am not telling you what poems I have enjoyed, but what poems have most moved me." He continues to reply to his correspondent's request to suggest a poem for a book. ".there is little sense in mentioning "The Odyssey,' or even 'The Ancient Mariner,'.his final words to the Wedding Guest, beginning, 'Farewell, farewell, But this I tell.'and continuing to the end. These last stanzas, following all the poem that has preceded, are to me a deeply moving and convincing a creed for living as I know." He signs above the typed name, "Rockwell Kent." Fine insight into Kent's literary tastes. Paper clip rust stain on verso shows slightly on upper left margin.

Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo, on printed personalized stationery with an imprint of "Fantasmagoria," Big Sur, California, July 31, 1949.

      - Miller makes reference to German author, Hermann Hesse's ninth novel, "Siddhartha," (1922) published in English in 1951. Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) French poet remembered for his poetry as well as his short libertine life. Miller's work was published as a book in 1952 by Mermod. To Bruno Adriani, Miller mentions French author Arthur Rimbaud and Hermann Hesse's classic, "Siddhartha." "Do you recall ever seeing a photograph of Rimbaud's mother? Mermod in Lausanne are bringing out the (2) parts of my work on Rimbaud in French, this year. Letter from H. L. Mermod advises no photo of the mother in the famous Matarosso Collection. Yet I saw one of her (Vitalie) in an old issue of 'Labyrinthe' (Mastarosso Coll too!). Wonder if this was a mistake of the printer? I suppose Mermod wishes to include some photos in the book. Roger Cornaz is doing the translation. Did you ever know Gerhart Muench (composer & pianist) from Dresden? He's in Altadema now and invites me frequently - rather amazing letters. Just read Hesse's 'Siddhartha' in French.Depresses me tremendously." He signs, "Henry Miller."

37 First Day Covers, opening of new Israeli post offices

, 1949-1952. 1949-1952. Very Good. (STAMPS) Thirty-seven (37) First Day Covers, each commemorating the opening of a new post office in Israel. 1949-1952. Printed in various colors, all highly graphic, many with pioneering scenes. Very Good condition.& & The opening of a post office, or a new mobile post office, was a barometer for population growth in the early days of Statehood. Each new opening was a cause for celebration, for, in most cases, it represented the beginning of a new neighborhood, and increased colonization of the Land. Each postcard, in some sense, serves as a historic document. Among the cities are: Azor, Tel Josef, Gan Shmuel, Ramla, Migdal Asqlon, Elat, Dir El Balah, Beit Yizhak, Caesarea, Kfar Hamakabi, Yavneh, Ganigar, and Beer Sheva.&
