Dee Goong An. Three Murder Cases Solved by Judge Dee. An old Chinese detective novel translated from the original Chinese with an introduction and notes

[Tokyo: Printed for the author by Toppan Printing Company, 1949. First edition, unnumbered copy. Illustrated with three reproductions of original Chinese pictures, and with six plates drawn by the author after ancient Chinese models. [8], iv, xxiii, 237 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Pictorial boards from a polychrome woodcut by the author. Foot of spine faintly rubbed, front board a tiny bit faded. Very good copy lacking the plain paper dust jacket. First edition, unnumbered copy. Illustrated with three reproductions of original Chinese pictures, and with six plates drawn by the author after ancient Chinese models. [8], iv, xxiii, 237 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Attractive copy of van Gulik's pioneering translation of Chinese detective fiction, begun during his wartime exile in the mountains and privately printed in Tokyo. Dee Goong An, published in an edition of 1200 numbered copies signed by the author, was the starting point for his successful series of novels featuring Judge Dee. The present copy is not signed, but is in better than average condition."Without scholarly work, I could not have continued my diplomatic career, where one deals exclusively with matters of temporary significance; scholarly research offers a welcome refuge, for there everything one does has permanent value, even one's mistakes, for these will enable other workers to do better. However, if one takes scholarly work seriously, one has to be a slave of the facts, and strictly control one's imagination. While writing fiction, on the other hand, one is the undisputed master of the facts, and one may give the reins to one's imagination. Therefore the writing of fiction has become an indispensable third facet of my work, a relaxation that keeps my interest in diplomatic and scholarly activities alive" (quoted in Evers, p. 57).

      - Ohne Dat. u. U. "Der blaue Kammerherr. - differenzbesteuert.         Poesies Antillaises

1949. MATISSE, Henri. Poesies Antillaises. By John-Antoine Nau. Illustrated with 28 full-page lithographs by Matisse. Folio, loose as issued in the publisher's wrappers and cardboard slipcase. Paris: Mourlot, 1972. |~||~||~||~||~| A superb copy of this magnificent book which is similar in feel to Florilège, published by Skira in 1948. Matisse conceived of this work as an homage to his close friend John-Antoine Nau, and as he had done with Charles d'Orleans and Ronsard, he personally selected the poems that moved him most. As Matisse and the poet shared a common love for Martinique, Matisse worked from Martiniquan models, as well as Malagashan models, for these illustrations. Matisse prepared the illustrations for this book in 1946 and a contract to publish the edition was drawn up with Mourlot in 1947. Matisse worked on and off on the production maquette for Poesies Antillaises from 1950 to 1953. However, due in large measure to the artist's ill health at the end of his life, publication was delayed until almost twenty years after his death. Mint condition. Duthuit 37.         Gone With The Wind

The most popular novel ever, Gone With The Wind, was written as a part-time hobby by a tiny, bored American Housewife who never dreamed it might be published. Bit by bit, over 10 years, she scribbled thousands of barely-decipherable pages that were jumbled up in dirty envelopes and stacked all over her flat, even under the bed. Often she gave up writing for months at a time, plagued by an inferiority complex, convinced the book was terrible, and had to be goaded by her husband to get back to work. Her passionate American Civil War love story of Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler was based on her own disastrous first marriage to a violent, drunken but exiting scoundrel on whom she based the character of Rhett. And when the book finally brought her overnight fame and millions of dollars, the sudden overwhelming success destroyed her peace of mind and creativity. She never wrote another book. ~ CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: This is the rare original dustjacket. Retains price of 12s. 6d. net to the inner front prelim. Has a few chips to top and bottom of the spine and corners, with few small closed edge tears and creasing and rubbing to the extremities. It is fairly soiled to colouring. Now housed in a removable protective archival sleeve for protection. Boards are red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine [on a black coloured box]. Colour has faded to the bottom of the spine, otherwise a nice clean condition. Tightly bound to the inner page block. 1042 pages. Light browning throughout, otherwise pages are clean and all pages are tightly bound. - BONUS ITEM: Photocopy of a newspaper clipping which tells Margaret Mitchell¿s real-life story. The character that Rhett was based on was that of her first husband ¿Red Upshaw¿. In 1949 she read a newspaper clipping reporting Red¿s suicide. At 47, he had jumped from the fifth floor of a sleazy hotel. Tragically, she herself had only seven months to live. ¿I¿m going to die in a car crash¿ she said. ¿I feel very certain of this¿. And so she did, knocked down in the street by a speeding driver. The love story was ended. - Very sad real-life story, behind that of ¿Gone With The Wind!¿¿ - Great addition for any Margaret Mitchell Collector. Small image laid in of Margaret Mitchell, lying in the street after being knocked down. - E N D - POSTAGE OPTIONS: Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it. - Regards from Arabella.         The Le Chatelier principle in linear programming. U.S. Air Force Project RAND report RM-210

Santa Monica, CA: RAND Corporation, 1949. Samuelson, Paul Anthony (1915-2009). The Le Chatelier principle in linear programming. U.S. Air Force Project RAND report RM-210. Offset typescript. 18ff. Santa Monica, CA: The RAND Corporation, 4 August 1949. 280 x 217 mm. Original printed wrappers with author and title of paper supplied in original typescript, three or four small marginal tears, but fine otherwise. Samuelson's copy, no. 25 of most likely 50 copies or fewer, assigned to Samuelson on the title in a secretarial hand.First Edition, the Author's Own Copy, of this rare and important research memorandum, in which Samuelson first applied the Le Chatelier principle of thermodynamics-which he had introduced into economics two years before-to the field of linear programming. Extremely Rare, with only one copy (Duke University) cited in OCLC. This working paper, prepared under the auspices of Project RAND (later the RAND Corporation), was most likely issued in an edition of 50 copies or fewer; a note on the title reads that "RAND Research Memoranda are available to authorized persons or agencies for their use and further dissemination is not permitted." Paul Anthony Samuelson, the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics, has often been called "the father of modern economics" due to the fact that he, more than anyone else, was responsible for incorporating the use of mathematics and the principles of optimization that characterize the modern paradigm of economic analysis. In his magnum opus, The Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947), Samuelson established the method of "comparative statics" by adapting the Le Châtelier principle of thermodynamics, in order to solve the fundamental problem of explaining how the coordinates of an equilibrium point defined by a system of equations shift when one or more of the given determining parameters changes. Le Châtelier's principle can loosely be formulated in the following way: "If the external conditions of a thermodynamic system are altered, the equilibrium of the system will tend to move in such a direction as to oppose the change in external conditions." In the context of economics this principle yields itself as the property that if the quantity of one of the available resources changes, then its shadow price changes in the opposite direction, or in other words, the marginal value of a resource increases if its amount is reduced, and vice versa. Samuelson's method of comparative statics lies at the core of modern economic analysis. In this research paper Samuelson first introduced his principle, which later became known as the Samuelson-Le Châtelier (or correspondence) principle, into the newly born field of linear programming, which is a mathematical method for determining a way to achieve the best outcome in a given mathematical model. The method was first developed in 1939 by Russian mathematician Leonid Kantorovich, and further expanded in the following decade by George Dantzig, who published the simplex method in 1947, and John von Neumann, who developed the theory of the duality in the same year. Linear programming is used most often in business, economics and operations research. Samuelson published numerous works on linear programming, culminating with Linear Programming and Economic Analysis (1958), co-authored with Robert Dorfman and Robert Solow.
