Death of a Salesman (Signed First Edition)

New York: The Viking Press, 1949. First edition. Fine/Fine. Signed by the author on the first blank. Book Fine with a short price code stamped on the final blank, otherwise untouched. In a Fine dust jacket with bright, vibrant colors, including the spine fonts and only the most niggling wear at the crown. A book that is becoming extremely difficult to locate in Fine condition. Arthur Miller's 1949 play - one of the towering classics of the American stage. "Death of a Salesman" follows the trials of Willy Loman, the quintessential American tragic hero. The original production was directed by Elia Kazan, starred Lee J. Cobb, and ran for 742 performances. The role of Loman has also been played by such luminaries as George C. Scott, Brian Dennehy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The play would win a Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the New York Drama Circle Critics' Award, becoming the first play to win all three prizes. It would also be adapted into a 1951 film, directed by Stanley Roberts -- Fredric March would be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. "Arthur Miller has written a superb drama. From every point of view "Death of a Salesman," which was acted at the Morosco last evening, is a rich and memorable drama. It is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted." (Brooks Atkinson in a Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

1949. Book. Fine. No Binding. Art Fine (as new)/Frame Fine (our Top grade). Original Art, Oil on Board. Original Art, Framed. [c.1949]. Image Size: 11 1/4 x 14 inches. Frame size: 15 1/4 x 18 inches. In a gilt frame with dead. Depicts Jupiter's surface with hydrogen flames and "lava" pouring out of the top of a cliff, with a "lake" below of liquid ammonia. Bonestell would often do a smalller, fully realized painting of his subject, then, if he liked it, he would follow up with a larger version that he would sign. This is the first, smaller, unsigned version of the work. For a look at the larger signed version see: THE ART OF CHESLEY BONESTELL by Miller & Durant, p. 153, which was used as an illustration for the book, CONQUEST OF SPACE. Fine (our highest grade)..

Black Incantation. 50 Danseurs et Chanteurs D'Afrique. Direction Artistique Rikar

Paris: S.P.I.C. [Societé Parisienne d'Impression et Cartonnage],, [c.1949]. Grande Semaine de Gala aux Ambassadeurs. Lithographic theatre poster. Framed and glazed, floated on black background mount in a black-stained wood box frame. Striking image in sepia, black, yellow and green by Castelli Aubin. Somewhat browned overall, some small repairs at the corners, and one short tear with a cellotape repair verso, overall very good. Scarce and striking poster for a Black "Ballet" written by the musician/artistic director Fonseca-Nou Ka Sonjé, better known by his "Portuguese" name Louis Vera da Fonseca. Born in the Cape Verde Islands of a Senegalese mother and Cape Verdean father, Fonseca showed early aptitude for music and dance, and after settling in Paris became involved in radio broadcasts of music from the French colonies. The present poster was for a spectacular show first staged at the Casino de Deauville, where reputedly on its première the Aga Khan offered a "tip" of 500,000 Francs, which Fonseca distributed among the cast. Fonseca has been categorized as an early proponent of a populist "world music", perhaps it would be fairer to see him as operating on the fringes of the Négritude movement.

URBANISTICA Rivista dell'Istituto Nazionale Urbanistica - Direttore Adriano Olivetti.

Torino,, 1949-1969.. In-4 p., bross. figur. Cfr. Cat. Archivolto, n. 6, 1993 - Bianchetti 1987, p. 32-39.

        The Sheltering Sky

London: John Lehmann,, 1949. Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to spine gilt on a blue ground. With the pictorial dust jacket. Faint ghosting through the jacket at the spine as usual, but an excellent copy in the jacket with some light rub at tips and a little more at top of spine panel, small tissue repair to top of the spine panel. Very nice. First edition, first impression of the author's first novel and a key title in the development of Beat literature.

Quarto (314 × 249 mm) Later twentieth-century dark blue cloth, green paper label to the spine, abstract in-lay design in green marbled paper to the upper board, original card wraps bound in. 28 colour plates, one full-page map, over 60 full-colour illustrative head- and tail-pieces. Binding clean, wraps a little browned and marked, text lightly browned, a very good copy. Limited edition, number 74 of 1,100 copies on velin. Highly evocative history of the world's oldest endurance race for sports cars, from its inception in 1923 until its suspension due to the outbreak of World War Two. Illustrated by the inimitable Géo Ham, one of the most influential illustrative artists working in the field, rightly famed for his thrilling images of 'planes and cars, capturing the devil-may-care love of speed that characterised the era. Text is by Roger Labric, recognised as the doyen of French autosports journalists of the 30s, who himself competed at Le Mans, as driver and/or team manager, on half a dozen occasions, on three of these partnered by Pierre Veyron in a Bugatti. A veritable GT of a book.

        Parfums Lucien Lelong

Paris: Lucien Lelong, 13, rue Alphonse de Neuville., 1949. Illustrations de A.M. Cassandre. Octavo. Original plain card boards in cream wrapper with the company device embossed within a debossed cartouche in the centre of the upper panel. 10 plates in colour lithography after illustrations by Cassandre, and similarly printed plates from photographs of the perfume bottles themselves by Réné Messager. Wraps a little rubbed and irregularly toned, spine slightly chipped head and tail, repair to short split at the head of the upper joint, contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper, else very good. First edition, no copy of this spectacular promotional brochure traced on line. Largely forgotten today, apart amongst the couture cognoscenti, Lelong was enormously influential in his day. After the First World War Lelong took charge of his parents' small fashion house, which was noted for its espousal of the modern look - the chic, autobiographical heroine of Colette's 1908 novella Les Vrilles de la vigne is dressed by Lelong - and continued their tradition of innovation advancing the concept of the "kinétique", clothes 'constructed in such a way that their true shape would emerge in movement, not at rest'. Not a designer himself, he employed a number of young designers who were later to strike out on their own, Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Hubert de Givenchy all spent time developing collections for Lelong. His contribution to the success of the house was in his vision, and his marketing brilliance; he redesigned his parents' salon decorating entirely in black, so that it was said to resemble a black-lined jewellery box, he offered discounts to society women who agreed to be photographed in his dresses, and was early into the branded perfume market. The first fragrances offered by Lelong were enigmatically named A, B, C, J and N, intending to evoke a sense of mystery and romance. Over 30 years created a total of 27 different fragrances. The artfully designed bottles were largely the work of Lelong himself. This superbly produced "catalogue" features ten suitably mysterious and evocative plates by Cassandre, (né Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron), the Ukrainian-born French painter, illustrator, poster designer and typographer, probably best-known for his magnificently imposing poster for the great CGT liner Normandie.

        Adonais.

Percy Bisshe SHELLEY: Adonais. Buenos Aires, [Imprenta de Francisco A. Colombo], 1949-1959. [128]p.
