        Death of a Salesman [Signed]

The Viking Press, New York 1949 - A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing of this highly-regarded Play [copyright page states "PUBLISHED BY THE VIKING PRESS, INC. IN MARCH 1949" on the top, and "PRINTED IN U.S.A. BY AMERICAN BOOK-STRATFORD PRESS, INC., NEW YORK" on the bottom, and the copyright date of 1949 is printed on the title page -- mildly askew, spine lightly sunned, some fading at the board and spine extremities, some light spots to the topstain (the book also contains an intriguing bookplate to the front free endpaper's verso and inscription to the half-title, neither of which have we analyzed)], in Very Good first issue dust jacket [priced at 2.50, Miller photo to the rear flap, the "S" in "SALESMAN" touches the arm of the salesman on the front panel, and no mention of the New York Drama Critics Circle award -- edges rubbed, spine ends and flap corner folds lightly chipped, short split with a tiny hole near the center of the spine's left edge where it folds to the rear panel], SIGNED BY ARTHUR MILLER on a tipped-in free endpaper; perhaps Arthur Miller's best-known work, the Play premiered on Broadway in 1949 and won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1949 Tony Award for Best Play. The Play has since been revived on Broadway four times, winning three Tony Awards for Best Revival (1984, 1999, and 2012 -- the latter two being awarded for the Best Revival for a Play). The work is considered by many to be one of the finest American Plays of the 20th Century and of it the noted Theater Critic and Historian John Gassner, a member of the New York Drama Critic's Circle and a member of the Pulitzer Prize drama jury, stated that "The ecstatic reception accorded Death of Salesman has been reverberating for some time wherever there is an ear for theatre, and it is undoubtedly the best American play since A Streetcar Named Desire." Signed copies in the first state dust jacket are rather uncommon and signed copies in the first state dust jacket are quite scarce. A Very Good + copy in a Very Good first state dust jacket, SIGNED BY ARTHUR MILLER. SCARCE INDEED. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Presidential Oil Painting by Dwight D. Eisenhower of Wilton B. Persons III, grandson of his Chief of Staff and World War II comrade, Major General Wilton B. Persons. The portrait has an uncanny resemblance to Ike himself!

The White House, n.d.. 19" x 23". "Original Oil Painting of Wilton B. Persons III, grandson of Major General Wilton B. Persons, painted by President Eisenhower in The White House, 15.25"" x 19.25"". Signed ""Eisenhower"" in the lower right. Matted and framed to 19"" x 23"". Fine condition. This portrait was painted by Eisenhower as a gift to Persons, his Chief of Staff, during his term of office at the White House. The Eisenhower Administration project at Columbia University refers to this painting and the study on the third floor of the White House where Pres. Eisenhower painted it.Accompanied by a printed image of President Eisenhower painting. In 2014, a slightly smaller 1949 oil painting by General Eisenhower of his wartime cottage south of London was estimated to sell for $100,000 to $150,000. As most of Eisenhower's paintings were of landscapes and buildings, his portraits are highly desirable, such as the oil portrait here offered depicting the grandson of his Chief of Staff. It is interesting to note that the portrait looks like a very young Eisenhower, something artists do at times subconsciously. Also included is an Eisenhower Typed Letter Signed to Major General Wilton B. Persons on gilt ""DDE"" stationery. Fine condition.TLS ""Ike,"" 1 page, 7"" x 10.25"". Gettysburg, Pa., November 30, 1962. To Major General Wilton B. It includes my days at NATO in Paris and the first three years of my Presidency, ending on February 29, 1956, the day I announced I would stand for re-election. Since memory is a fallible thing, I am writing to ask if you would review certain of the chapters ... for me before the manuscript goes to press ...""ProvenanceMajor General Wilton Burton ""Jerry"" Persons (1896-1977) served as the White House Chief of Staff to President Dwight D. Eisenhower from October 7, 1958 until January 20, 1961 and was Eisenhower's representative in the transition of government between the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. A pre-publication, uncased publisher's copy with sewn signatures, pictorial endpapers, some uneven toning. Signed by Arthur Miller in a contemporary signature. Housed in publisher's cloth slipcase. When Death Of A Salesman premiered in 1949, it was an instant success and secured Arthur Miller's place as one of the great American playwrights of the 20th century.         [Photo Album]: Diary and Photo Album of a Camp Fire Girl Troop Leader's trip to Les Courmettes, France

Les Courmettes, France. July 23 - August 10, 1949. Oblong small octavo. Measuring 6.5" x 8.5". Prong-bound green wrappers with gilt stamped flowers on the front wrapper and handwritten "Les Courmettes 1949." A collection of 101 black and white and sepia toned photographs measuring 2.5 x 3.5 affixed to white pages and interspersed throughout with a diary of the trip. Very good with some tears and creasing on the wrappers. A diary augmented with snapshots and postcards from a Camp Fire Girls trip to Les Courmettes, France from July 23 until August 10, 1949. The trip is fairly early on in the tenure of the British Association which began in 1921 after the success of the American organization. The detailed journal and photographs provide a complete account of the travels of the girls from the point of view of Eda Banham, one of the young troop leaders with the group. Before leaving the girls saw Oklahoma at Drury Lane which Eda thought was "very futuristic and essentially American but a very good show." After making the crossing, they began their travels on a train to Paris, seeing all the sights of the cities including the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, and Notre Dame after which they were on their way to the South of France. Once there the girls set up an encampment, seen here in some snapshots. Eda writes, "at 9 pm we all gathered on the terrace with the international campers to partake in a camp fire... the French did not care to speak to us in English though we were quite aware that they spoke English better than we could speak French." The photos show the beauty of the South of France as well as girls posing in group photos in uniform, hiking, and performing plays for local children. "It was a party for the colony and we had been asked to entertain. The Rangers were worried and felt shy about performing." Towards the final days the photos are of happily laughing girls, shirtless men, and one particularly interesting photo of the troop hanging out of a jeep traveling along a dirt road in the woods. A wonderful assemblage relaying a complete look at Eda's trip. .

Ohne Dat. u. U.,. .

Domus, 1949

Boldly signed by all parties including Spencer who has used his address as 115 - 11 173rd street St Albans, New York - which was Louie Armstrong's house! Note: Spencer died in 1965, and there is virtually nothing of his on the market. The Schomberg Library, arguably the largest repository of Black historical material in the United States, possesses not a single signed item. Without a doubt, Spencer is much rarer than Charlie Parker and Bix Beiderbecke. Near fine condition. African-American jazz and popular music composer, pianist and singer best known for his songs "Basin Street Blues," "I Ain't Got Nobody," "She'll Be Coming Around The Mountain," and many more. He also collaborated on songs with W.C. Handy, Fats Waller, and Josephine Baker (when both were in exile). Williams was one of the earliest African-Americans to be inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

        Les Fourmis. [Signed / Inscribed]

Paris, Editions du Scorpion, 1949.. 19 x 12 cm. 204 pages. Broche. / Softcover. Bon etat generale. Exemplaire un peu jauni. Interieur propre. Envoi autographe signe de l'auteur:" Pour Jacqueline Lay un bien cordial hommage Boris Vian". / First edition of this collection of short stories by the avant-garde novelist, playwright, jazz musician and cult figure. A very good or better copy in publisher's illustrated wrappers. This copy inscribed by Vian on the half-title, "Pour Jacqueline Zay (?) En tres cordial hommage. Boris Vian." Books inscribed by Boris Vian, who died at the age of 39 during a screening of a film based on his pseudonmyous novel "I'll Spit on Your Grave", are distinctly scarce. His chef d'oeuvre L'Ecume du jours was called by Raymond Queneau, "the most poignant love story of our time.".

        Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist

Evanston: Library of Living Philosophers, 1949. First edition, one of 760 copies signed and dated "Albert Einstein '49." Octavo, original brown cloth, top edge gilt, original slipcase. The book is in near fine condition, with a contemporary gift inscription to the inner gutter; the slipcase is in very good condition shows some of the usual rubbing. Edited by Paul Arthur Schhilpp. Written by the man considered the "Person of the Century" by Time magazine, this is not a glimpse into Einstein's personal life, but an extension and elaboration into his thinking on science. Two of the great theories of the physical world were created in the early 20th century: the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Einstein created the theory of relativity and was also one of the founders of quantum theory. Here, Einstein describes the failure of classical mechanics and the rise of the electromagnetic field, the theory of relativity, and of the quanta. "The greatest physicist of the 20th century" (PMM 408).
