A Short Account of the Life and Work of Wynkyn de Worde, with a leaf from The Golden Legend printed by him at the sign of The Sun in Fleet Street, London, the Year 1527.

Printed by the Grabhorn Press for the Book Club of California, San Francisco 1949 - One of 375 copies. Title in red, printed in red and black throughout in Rudolf Koch's Bibel Gotisch type on French handmade. Seven devices of Wynkyn de Worde reproduced in the text and with decorative initials by Zena Kavin. Folio, original brown cloth backed, decorated paper covered board, printed paper labels on spine and upper cover, in the original plain paper protective wrapper (chipped at extremities). The texts used here on Wynkyn de Worde and on the textual and printing history of the Golden Legend, were compiled from various sources by Robert Grabhorn and is a fascinating story despite the fact that "with Wynkyn de Worde his record forces us to the conclusion that his history was largely one of long and industrious labor, free from any drama other than that provided by his time". The original Wynkyn de Worde leaf in our copy is folio 53 and appears to be of the final words of the first part of the text the first two pages of the index. A very good copy with the booklabel of Clarence B. Hanson on the front pastedown. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Libro illeggibile

1949. MUNARI, [Bruno]. [Libro illeggibile]. Small stampled pamphlet, 105 x 90 mm, comprised of off-white paper covers, the front cover with a hand torn hole, followed by 6 sheets of various coloured tissue paper (purple, green and yellow) each with a hand torn hole, and a silver paper star pasted down on the recto of the back cover, preserved in a new purple cloth folding box. Milan: Muggiani, n.d. ca. 1949. |~||~||~||~| An exceedingly rare ephemeral work by Bruno Munari. This small pamphlet is presented in the style of Munari's Libro illeggibile and was most likely created in a very small edition intended as a gift for friends. This copy comes by way of a friend and collaborator of Munari's who remembers receiving it around 1949. Some minor creasing, overall a fine survival of a fragile work. Not in Maffei's Munari I Libri.

The author's first book, a scarce collection of his often humorous columns from his first ten years with The New Yorker. Hamburger and colleagues at the magazine for nearly sixty years.         The Art of Living [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Harper & Brothers. (1949). The second book by this artist who is perhaps most famous as a New Yorker cover artist and cartoonist: his "View of the World from 9th Avenue" became an iconic and satirical comment on New Yorkers' self-centered view of their place in the world. This book comprises about 300 Steinberg drawings, most published here for the first time. Between the publication of his first book and this one, Steinberg had been selected for the prestigious show "Fourteen Americans" at the Museum of Modern Art, along with such artists as Robert Motherwell, Ahile Gorky, I. Rice Pereira, and others, and is considered to have been the show that "proclaimed the arrival of Abstract Expressionism" in 1946. This copy is inscribed by Steinberg to Peter Matthiessen, "with affectionate greetings" and dated December 25, 1985. Another name in pencil on half title; sunning and staining to illustrated boards; a good copy, lacking the dust jacket but with the front and back jacket flaps laid in. A nice association copy between a notable artist and a notable writer. First Edition. Hardcover.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1949. FIRST EDITION. No. 6 OF 155 SPECIAL COPIES WITH A FLYLEAF SIGNED "S. L. CLEMENS" AND "MARK TWAIN." n. Hardcover. A Virtually Mint Copy of an Edition Signed by Twain 39 Years after He Died. 243 x 165 mm. mm (9 1/2 x 6 1/2"). 5 p.l., 374 pp. Edited and with an introduction by Dixon Wecter. FIRST EDITION. No. 6 OF 155 SPECIAL COPIES WITH A FLYLEAF SIGNED "S. L. CLEMENS" AND "MARK TWAIN." Publisher's black cloth with printed spine label, original green dust jacket with printed spine label. Housed in the publisher's nearly fine slipcase Frontispiece portrait of Twain and his wife, Livia. A FLAWLESS COPY. This is a love story in letters, offered here in one of the special copies containing autographs that had been provided years earlier by Twain (1835-1910) and stored away by Harper's for future use. Olivia Langdon (1867-1904) and Twain met in December of 1867 through her brother, and their first date was to attend a reading by Dickens in New York City. Between then and their marriage in February of 1870, Twain fervently courted Olivia, mostly through letters. The hard-drinking Twain, always yearning to travel, always inclined to invest unwisely, was a difficult spouse, but his wife, even though suffering perpetually from frail health, was an indomitable helpmate, especially as editor of his writings and speeches. The letters here cover the entire span of courtship and marriage, with a few letters included from Olivia, and the affection from both sides is touching. The publication of this collection was a major literary event, and according to a "Publisher's Weekly" article at the time, demand was so high for this special autographed edition that "the publishers decided that the only fair way to give them out to the trade would be a drawing, allowing one chance to each store, regardless of size." There cannot be a nicer copy of this book anywhere.

Troubled Island. An Opera in three Acts by William Grant Still. Libretto by Langston Hughes.

1949 - 8vo., original; printed wrappers. A fine copy. First edition of the libretto alone. Signed by Langston Hughes. Still and Hughes began writing Troubled Island in 1936, but Hughes left the project the following year to cover the Spanish Civil War for the Baltimore Afro-American. Arvey, a pianist and writer who had never written a libretto before, completed the project in Hughes’ absence. Troubled Island was completed in 1939, but Still faced problems in arranging for a production. Planned premieres in 1945 and 1948 at the New York City Opera were withdrawn, but the company presented the world premiere of Troubled Island on March 31, 1949. It was the first time that the work of an African-American composer was presented by a major American opera company. Although the leading roles of Dessalines and his wife Azelia were based on black Haitians, the opera company cast white opera stars Robert Weede and Marie Powers, who work dark make-up for the 1949 premiere. African-American bass-baritone Lawrence Winters took over the role of Dessalines from Weede for the second performance of the opera and continued in the role for the remainder of the production's run. The premiere performance was greeted with 22 curtain calls. Critical reaction to the work ranged from mixed-to-negative. Time Magazine said, “Composer Still's music, sometimes lusciously scored, sometimes naively melodic, often had more prettiness than power. In all, Troubled Island had more of the souffle of operetta than the soup bone of opera.” John Briggs of the New York Post opined, “one was never sure one was hearing a first-rate performance of an inferior work or a second-rate performance of a good one,” while Miles Kastendieck, writing for both the New York Journal-American and the Christian Science Monitor, said of Still’s music: “the result is a mixture of styles signifying talent and a feel for opera but achieving little more than a suggestion of it.” Years later, Judith Still, the daughter of Still and Arvey, said that the New York critics intentionally panned Troubled Island due to racism. “Howard Taubmann (a critic and friend of Still) came to my father and said ‘Billy, because I’m your friend I think that I should tell you this â€" the critics have had a meeting to decide what to do about your opera. They think the colored boy has gone far enough and they have voted to pan your opera.’ And that was it. In those days, critics had that kind of influence.” Following its premiere, New York City Opera staged two additional presentations, on April 1 and May 1 of 1949. To date, New York City Opera has never revived the work in full; however, a 60th-anniversary concert production of excerpts was presented by the company in March 2009 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The opera has not been seen widely outside these two productions until October 19, 2013 when the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago presented the opera in full with a black cast, black chorus and black conductor. The opera was held at the Paul Robeson Theatre of the South Shore Cultural Center. (Wikipedia) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Patzcuaro en el año del mil novecientos treinta y seis

Mexico City: Enrique Cervantes, 1949 two printed introductory leaves, including title, followed by 50 leaves, each with a mounted original photographic print (approximately 6 1/2" x 4 1/2") and printed caption, contents loose as issued in original quarto (11 1/2" x 9") checkered cloth chemise with pictorial paper label to upper board and spine and three cloth ties. First edition. An excellent visual survey, with artfully printed original photos, of the colonial architecture of Patzcuaro, a lovely mountain town, is colonial Mexico at its most enchanting. It is the most important town of the lake region of Michoacán in central Mexico. The town was founded sometime in the 1320s, at first becoming the capital of the Tarascan state and later its ceremonial center. After the Spanish took over, Vasco de Quiroga worked to make Pátzcuaro the capital of the New Spain province of Michoacán, but after his death, the capital would be moved to nearby Valladolid (today Morelia). Pátzcuaro has retained its colonial and indigenous character since then, and has been named both a "Pueblo Mágico", and one of the 100 Historic World Treasure Cities by the United Nations. Pátzcuaro and the lake region it belongs to is well known as a site for Day of the Dead celebrations. The center of the city is remarkably well preserved and many of these photographs document the area and its fine buildings. Images include the Pila del Torito, the Plazuela y templo de San Agustin, the Plaza principal, the Casa del Portal Chaparro the Fuente de los Pescaditos in the Plaza principal, the numerous street views, numerous views of the Templo de la Compañía.Enrique Cervantes was a well established photographer, historian, bibliophile and researcher in the tradition of Rafael Garcia Granados, Manuel Romero de Terreros and Gerardo Murillo (Dr. Atl). His work focused on the recovery, preservation and dissemination of Mexican architectural past.Condition:Spine label chipped, front paper label with traces writing, corners bumped and rubbed, some light edge wear to photographic leaves else a very good copy of a scare item.
