Troubled Island. An Opera in three Acts by William Grant Still. Libretto by Langston Hughes.

1949 - 8vo., original; printed wrappers. A fine copy. First edition of the libretto alone. Signed by Langston Hughes. Still and Hughes began writing Troubled Island in 1936, but Hughes left the project the following year to cover the Spanish Civil War for the Baltimore Afro-American. Arvey, a pianist and writer who had never written a libretto before, completed the project in Hughes’ absence. Troubled Island was completed in 1939, but Still faced problems in arranging for a production. Planned premieres in 1945 and 1948 at the New York City Opera were withdrawn, but the company presented the world premiere of Troubled Island on March 31, 1949. It was the first time that the work of an African-American composer was presented by a major American opera company. Although the leading roles of Dessalines and his wife Azelia were based on black Haitians, the opera company cast white opera stars Robert Weede and Marie Powers, who work dark make-up for the 1949 premiere. African-American bass-baritone Lawrence Winters took over the role of Dessalines from Weede for the second performance of the opera and continued in the role for the remainder of the production's run. The premiere performance was greeted with 22 curtain calls. Critical reaction to the work ranged from mixed-to-negative. Time Magazine said, “Composer Still's music, sometimes lusciously scored, sometimes naively melodic, often had more prettiness than power. In all, Troubled Island had more of the souffle of operetta than the soup bone of opera.” John Briggs of the New York Post opined, “one was never sure one was hearing a first-rate performance of an inferior work or a second-rate performance of a good one,” while Miles Kastendieck, writing for both the New York Journal-American and the Christian Science Monitor, said of Still’s music: “the result is a mixture of styles signifying talent and a feel for opera but achieving little more than a suggestion of it.” Years later, Judith Still, the daughter of Still and Arvey, said that the New York critics intentionally panned Troubled Island due to racism. “Howard Taubmann (a critic and friend of Still) came to my father and said ‘Billy, because I’m your friend I think that I should tell you this â€" the critics have had a meeting to decide what to do about your opera. They think the colored boy has gone far enough and they have voted to pan your opera.’ And that was it. In those days, critics had that kind of influence.” Following its premiere, New York City Opera staged two additional presentations, on April 1 and May 1 of 1949. To date, New York City Opera has never revived the work in full; however, a 60th-anniversary concert production of excerpts was presented by the company in March 2009 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The opera has not been seen widely outside these two productions until October 19, 2013 when the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago presented the opera in full with a black cast, black chorus and black conductor. The opera was held at the Paul Robeson Theatre of the South Shore Cultural Center. (Wikipedia) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Patzcuaro en el año del mil novecientos treinta y seis

Mexico City: Enrique Cervantes, 1949 two printed introductory leaves, including title, followed by 50 leaves, each with a mounted original photographic print (approximately 6 1/2" x 4 1/2") and printed caption, contents loose as issued in original quarto (11 1/2" x 9") checkered cloth chemise with pictorial paper label to upper board and spine and three cloth ties. First edition. An excellent visual survey, with artfully printed original photos, of the colonial architecture of Patzcuaro, a lovely mountain town, is colonial Mexico at its most enchanting. It is the most important town of the lake region of Michoacán in central Mexico. The town was founded sometime in the 1320s, at first becoming the capital of the Tarascan state and later its ceremonial center. After the Spanish took over, Vasco de Quiroga worked to make Pátzcuaro the capital of the New Spain province of Michoacán, but after his death, the capital would be moved to nearby Valladolid (today Morelia). Pátzcuaro has retained its colonial and indigenous character since then, and has been named both a "Pueblo Mágico", and one of the 100 Historic World Treasure Cities by the United Nations. Pátzcuaro and the lake region it belongs to is well known as a site for Day of the Dead celebrations. The center of the city is remarkably well preserved and many of these photographs document the area and its fine buildings. Images include the Pila del Torito, the Plazuela y templo de San Agustin, the Plaza principal, the Casa del Portal Chaparro the Fuente de los Pescaditos in the Plaza principal, the numerous street views, numerous views of the Templo de la Compañía.Enrique Cervantes was a well established photographer, historian, bibliophile and researcher in the tradition of Rafael Garcia Granados, Manuel Romero de Terreros and Gerardo Murillo (Dr. Atl). His work focused on the recovery, preservation and dissemination of Mexican architectural past.Condition:Spine label chipped, front paper label with traces writing, corners bumped and rubbed, some light edge wear to photographic leaves else a very good copy of a scare item.

This book was written during the last several years of Orwell's life -- in February 1946 he suffered a tubercular haemorrhage which he hid from friends and family before setting off for the Isle of Jura in the Hebrides to work on the basics of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Over the next two years, and traveling back and forth from England to Jura, Orwell completed the novel as he was able, but his heath was in major decline. He completed the novel in December 1948, but by January 1949 he was seriously ill with Tuberculosis. He lasted one more year and died of the disease on January 21st, 1950. This book is considered one of the best dystopian novels of the 20th century. .

The Second World War, finely bound, inscribed and dated by the author in Volume I and signed in Volume II, with a flight log book signed by Churchill, and a presentation letter from Churchill’s private secretary

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1949. Hardcover. This magnificent set of The Second World War is inscribed and dated by Churchill in Volume I and signed in Volume II, with a flight log book signed by Churchill, and a presentation letter from his private secretary.  These belonged to Captain Andrew Cannon Treyer Evans (1923-2000), the former RAF pilot who flew Churchill to England from Madeira on 12 January 1950 for the run-up to the February 1950 General Election. Also included is a 13 January 1950 newspaper clipping about the flight which quotes both Evans and Churchill. The binding is full red morocco with gilt decoration and print, raised spine bands, contrasting morocco spine labels, gilt top edges, and marbled endpapers. All seven volumes are housed in two red cloth slipcases. Volume I is the most current edition available at the time of the inscription ?- the first printing of the second (revised with Churchill?'s many corrections) edition, published November 1949. The signed Volume II, as well as the additional four volumes comprising the set, are British first edition, first printing. A seventh ?"volume?" is a clamshell case housing the flight log book, presentation letter, and newspaper clipping. Captain Evans?' book plates were recovered from the pastedowns of the two signed volumes and affixed to the new pastedowns and protective tissue covers were added preceding the inscribed Volume I page and signed Volume II page. Captain Evans enlisted at age 18 in 1941, earned his RAF wings in 1942, and was demobilised as a Flight Lieutenant in 1946.  During the War he trained in Airspeed Oxford bombers, flew anti U-Boat patrols and instructed in Catalina flying boats, and flew troop transport Liberators.  After the war Evans flew commercially. Evans was piloting a flying boat for Aquila Airways on 12 January 1950 when he flew Churchill back to England from the Portuguese island of Madeira. ?"Churchill had intended to stay in Madeira for several weeks, hoping to make considerable progress on the fourth volume of his war memoirs.  But while he was away, Attlee announced that a General Election would be held on February 23.?" (Gilbert, Volume VIII, p.500) Hence Churchill cut short his trip and returned to London. The flight proved nearly as dramatic and uncertain as the election.  Fog threatened to divert the landing site, causing a scramble for the reception party on the ground. The press quoted Captain Evans: ?"Providence was on our side all the way, and the fog lifted at just the right time.?"  Providence was not so partisan with the election, which left the Labour-led Government with a thin, five-seat majority. Churchill signed Evans?' personal flight log book.  Two and a half months later, on 28 March 1950, Churchill?'s Private Secretary, Cecily ?"Chips?" Gemmell (Private Secretary from 1947-1951) sent Evans signed copies of the first two volumes of Churchill?'s The Second World War. The bindings are superb and pristine, being newly commissioned by us. Within, the post-war economy standards paper remains uniformly bright for the edition. Spotting to the signed volumes is modest for the edition, light and intermittent inside, a bit heavier to the otherwise bright fore and bottom edges.  Spotting to the final four volumes is trivial, confined to fore and bottom edges. We find no previous ownership marks other than the author?'s graffiti and Captain Evans' bookplates in Volume I & II. The signed flight log book is in very good condition, retaining the original binding, previously reinforced at the inner joints. The blank verso of the log book?'s final entry page contains three inscriptions dated June and July 1950, including that of English actor Carleton Hobbs (1898-1978). The accompanying presentation letter on Chartwell stationery is marred only by old cellotape stains at the blank upper and lower margins, where the letter was originally affixed inside Volume I.         The Poems

London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd,, 1949. 2 volumes, tall octavo. Original bright green cloth over bevelled boards, gilt lettered spines, author's monogram in gilt on front covers, top edges gilt. With the original glassine dust jackets and slipcase. Photogravure portrait frontispieces of Yeats by Emery Walker after John Singer Sargent and Augustus John. Prelims and edges of book block a little foxed, otherwise a very good set, with the original publisher's prospectus (foxed). First variorum edition, limited to 375 numbered copies signed by Yeats, and published by Macmillan as the Definitive Edition, beautifully printed in Fournier type on laid paper. The edition was personally overseen by Yeats's widow, George, the publisher Harold Macmillan and the publisher's reader Thomas Mark; as stated in the prospectus: "For some time before his death [in 1939], W. B. Yeats was engaged in revising the text of this edition of his poems, of which he had corrected the proofs, and for which he had signed the special page to appear at the beginning of Volume I [the limitation sheet]". Yeats was, of course, a constant reviser of his work - which makes this definitive edition all the more important.

IL MONDO, settimanale diretto da MARIO PANNUNZIO Rara collezione (1949 - 1966) TUTTO IL PUBBLICATO - , Miano, Mazzocchi Gianni - Edit. Domus, 1949

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1949. First American Edition. First Printing, one of 20,000 copies. Octavo; publisher's taupe cloth, with titles stamped in maroon and red on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 314pp, [2]. Contemporary owner's name and date to front pastedown, with same owner's name rubber-stamped to front endpaper; some light offsetting to rear pastedown and endpaper; Near Fine. Red variant dustjacket is unclipped (priced $3.00), with a hint of sunning to spine panel and some pinpoint wear to lower corners; very Near Fine. Superlative copy of Orwell's towering work of dystopian fiction, the vocabulary of which has become a part of the fabric of our culture. The rather sizeable print run throws out any notion of rarity, but jacketed copies in true collectors condition are genuinely uncommon. Basis for two notable film adaptations: Michael Anderson's 1956 film starring Edmund O'Brien, and the Michael Radford's later picture starring John Hurt and Richard Burton. Fenwick A12b, Connolly 100.
