Illus.. 1949?-52 Complete set of the => entire 15-volume run of the Evergreen Tales, the Limited Editions Club's only books specifically produced and labelled as being for children — the Club's gathering of what they considered to be the most beloved and time-honored of classic children's stories. Edited by Jean Hersholt, these lovingly prepared renditions were illustrated by some of the LEC's biggest names, including Arthur Szyk, Edy Legrand, Raffaelo Busoni, Fritz Eichenberg, et al. Many of the volumes are signed at the colophon by Hersholt, and => illustrators who signed are: Edward Ardizzone, Everett Gee Jackson, Ervine Metzl, Robert Lawson, Henry C. Pitz, Busoni, and Eichenberg. These examples are numbered copy 238 of either 2000 or 2500 printed depending on the set (except for one trio out of the five, which is numbered 236); the appropriate LEC newsletter is present. Publisher's cloth of various colors, eight volumes in the original glassine dust wrappers, all in publisher's red paper?-covered slipcases with printed paper spine labels; some wrappers with tears or chips, slipcase spines gently sunned, slipcases showing light shelfwear overall with Aladdin case dust-soiled, Emperor's New Clothes' spine lettering rubbed. Ali Baba and a few other volumes with scattered spots of light foxing, overall most pages clean. Newsletter moderately worn. Complete sets are uncommon; this one shows no signs of having been in the hands of any actual child.

        The World Crisis

      New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1949. First edition, third printing. Hardcover. This is a collector grade copy of the first abridged and revised edition, third and final printing of Churchill's history of the First World War in the dust jacket unique to this printing. Churchill's history - which he titled "The World Crisis" - was originally published between 1923 and 1931. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915. After the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his masterwork - originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931 - far exceeds this purpose. This important edition covering the war years 1911-1918 is not just an abridgement. It incorporates revisions by Churchill with new material, including a whole new chapter on the Battle of the Marne, as well as a new introduction. The U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition. There were three printings of the U.S. first abridged and revised edition - 1931, 1942, and 1949. All three are quite scarce in the original dust jackets. Here is the third printing, with a black dust jacket unique to this printing that prominently features a famous wartime photo of Churchill by Yousuf Karsh on the front face. A large book and quality production, it is 866 pages with fold-out maps and illustrations, bound in an attractive, vertically scored red cloth. This is a beautiful, near fine plus copy in a near fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square, tight, and immaculately clean with nicely rounded spine. The only exterior flaws noted are lightly bumped upper corners. The contents are notably bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. All fold-out maps and illustrations are present and pristine. We note only a trace of barely discernible soiling to the otherwise bright page edges. The black dust jacket of this edition proved particularly susceptible to wear and scuffing, perhaps owing to the thin paper of the dust jacket (which was printed black on white paper), and the size and weight of the book. This dust jacket is near fine with perhaps the best spine presentation we?'ve seen; the red spine lettering remains vividly bright with no trace of sunning and there is only minor wear to the spine ends and rear hinge. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original front flap price. The illustrated front face shows only light scuffing with no loss. The sole trivial losses are a .5 inch chip to the upper edge of the rear face and a closed tear with some wrinkling and small chip losses to the rear flap fold. Withal, an exceptionally well-preserved example of a striking and notoriously fragile dust jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival clear cover. Extensive autobiographical essay written by Mann during the creation of what is, arguably his seminal work. Covers his work from 1943 to the 1947 publication of the novel. 203 pages. Dust Jaclet - Paper dust jacket is clean and bright but missing a rectangular chunk that is the lower 2/3 of the spine. Front and rear covers and inside flaps present in their entirety. 1/4" chip in the tip of each of the corners. Head of the spine has some chipping, the deepest of which is 1/2" deep. Rare. Simulated leather, dark-blue pebbled cloth lettered in gold on front. The Rosalind and Alfred Perlman copy, with their names stamped in gold on bottom front corner. Original printed wrappers bound in. Rosalind Perlman, born in Chicago in 1911, was educated at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and later at St. Louis Teachers College. She is the author of THE BLIND DOCTOR, a biography about Jacob Bolotin, a blind physician who lived and practiced in Chicago in the early part of the twentieth century, She and her husband established, under The National Federation of the Blind, the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award Program, to recognize individuals and organizations working in the field of blindness that have made outstanding contributions. We assume they were contributors to the Truman campaign and had Truman sign their copy at the later date in May 1967. Magazine size, 74 pages including covers; illustrated with photographs. An archive of 10 scripts and supporting materials for the 1948 film, "Portrait of Jennie," directed by William Dieterle, based on the 1940 novel by Robert Nathan, written for the screen by Peter Berneis, Leonardo Bercovici, and Paul Osborn, and starring Joseph Cotten, Jennifer Jones, Ethel Barrymore, and Lillian Gish. Painstakingly developed by Selznick International and then released under the auspices of Vanguard Pictures (to whom Selznick International was sold),"Portrait of Jennie" is a romantic fantasy so strange and concept-driven that it has always eluded mass popularity. Joseph Cotten portrays a struggling artist who becomes enamored with a little girl named Jennie who inexplicably begins to grow to womanhood over a period of weeks. The archive includes 9 documents related to the film, 6 of which are pre-production, and 4 post-production: Synopsis by Paul MacNamara. There are 5 watercolors on three 10-1/2" x 13" sheets mounted to boards, along with what appears to be two slightly different colored drawings of the endpapers for the volume which featured a number of small drawings. A few very mild creases, else extremely fine condition.The recipient, Henry De Wolf Smyth (1898-1986), was an accomplished physicist and diplomat. Smyth received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Princeton, and was a member of the university's faculty for much of his career. During the Second World War he was a member of the National Defense Research Committee (1941-1943) where he proposed the electromagnetic methods that were used to enrich early samples of U-235 used in early work on the atomic bomb. From 1943 to 1945 he was a consultant to the Manhattan Project heading research on heavy water while also serving as director of the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory. In 1945, in the wake of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he authored A General Account of the Development of Methods of Using Atomic Energy for Military Purposes (popularly known as the ""Smyth Report"") which was the first official, public account of the development of the atomic bomb.In 1949, Harry Truman nominated Smyth to become a member of the Atomic Energy Commission. Following the first successful Soviet atomic test the same year, he argued against Truman's proposal to pursue the hydrogen bomb. He resigned from the Atomic Energy Commission in 1954 over Lewis Strauss' campaign to revoke Robert Oppenheimer's security clearance, despite his personal antipathy toward the former head of the Manhattan Project. In 1961, John F. Kennedy appointed Smyth the United States Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, where he played a crucial role in the adoption of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1970. He retired from the IAEA the same year, but remained active in public affairs, most notably in his opposition to Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Imitative (a.k.a. ""Star Wars""), calling instead for joint reductions in nuclear arms stockpiles. "

        Jour de fete (Original French Film Program)

      Paris: Cady Films, 1949. Original French program for the 1949 Jacques Tati film, "Jour de Fete," the director's first feature-length movie, about a day in the life of a rural French postman, illustrated throughout in color by Rene Peron. Rather than being a typical program with biographies, photographs, film stills, and essays, Tati's approach is to introduce the film's cast and crew details, then tell its story along with illustrations, in the manner of a children's book. "Jour de fete" was shot in both Thomson-Color and black-and-white, and due to processing difficulties with the former, only the black-and-white version was seen for decades, until 1995 when the color version was restored. Fascinatingly, this rare program clearly illustrates the vivid color that Tati intended audiences in France and Europe to see--though no one did. Tall card wrappers in full color, saddle-stitched, with full-color illustrations throughout and photomontages from the film printed on the wrapper verso. 12 x 8 inches. About Near Fine. A semi-documentary film about the Berlin Airlift during World War II, told through the eyes of two soldiers, one with a seething hatred of Germans, and one who falls in love with an attractive German war widow. Original-Halbpergamentbände im Großformat 28 x 20 cm mit goldgeprägten Rückentiteln. Buchdeckel mit braunen Bezügen und Pergamentecken. Pergament ist ein historisches Einbandmaterial, das im Besonderen vom 15. bis 17. Jahrhundert Verwendung fand und sich durch eine außerordentliche Festigkeit und Langlebigkeit auszeichnet. Unversehrte Bände aus der genannten Zeit zeugen noch heute davon. Die etwas \"schmutzig\" erscheinende Oberfläche sowie bei manchen Bänden dunkle Verästelungen oder Maserungen sind typisch für dieses Material und verleihen jedem Band eine besondere Individualität.         Schriftsteller (1913-1960): Druckfahne (unterer Teil, 14 x 14 cm) einer zentralen Stelle seines Romans "Der blaue Kammerherr" mit sehr zahlreichen eigenh. Korrekturen, Einfügungen u. Ergänzungen in Blau, Schwarz und Rot.

      Ohne Dat. u. U., - "Der blaue Kammerherr. Galanter Roman in vier Bänden" erschien 1949 erstmals bei Suhrkamp und entwickelte sich zum "Longseller". Dieses Hauptwerk von Wolf von Niebelschütz ist zwar nicht so berühmt wie Tolkiens "Herr der Ringe", aber brillanter. Es spielt auf einer fiktiven griechischen Insel zur Zeit des Barock, die antiken Götter sind aber noch aktiv. - Unsere Druckfahne ist der untere Teil des mit "48" bezeichneten Druckbogens, der in der EA zur S. 102 in Band I wurde. - // - Es geht es um das letzte Gespräch des venezianischen Botschafters Don Giovanni von Legua, bevor er von Attentätern niedergestochen wird. Er weist die Warnung des ihn verehrenden Hofnarren Pulcinello zurück und erinnert ihn daran, die verabredete Zusammenarbeit vorzubereiten. Pulcinello ist eigentlich ein in Verbannung lebender Venezianier aus bester Familie und ein Abate, dessen Herkunft und Name schon kurz zuvor im Roman genannt waren. Deshalb hat der Autor in der Druckfahne diese und einige andere bereits bekannte Einzelheiten wie die "klingenden Schnabelschuhe" wider gestrichen und so den Text verdichtet. Dies gilt für weitere Korrekturen, wie z. B.: "`Sie sind ein Narr`, sagte Giovanni und legte ihm flüchtig die Hand auf die Schulter, [gestrichen: ‚aber ein freundlicher"]. ‚Andate, amico, e preparate ["preparate" gestrichen und von Hand ersetzt durch: "fate le preparative" - so gedruckt in der EA. - richtig wäre preparativi]. Don Giovanni [von Hand gestrichen und von Hand ersetzt durch: "Ein Legua"] schleicht sich ungern durch Hintertüren [gestrichen: "davon. Er liebt die Freiheit"]". - Weiter über die letzte Begegnung mit Prinzessin Danae im Pantherfell vor dem Attentat, das tragischer weise gerade durch die Befolgung des Rates des Hofnarren gelingt. In diesem Abschnitt ist z. B. die Amtsbezeichnung "der Botschafter" von Hand durch dessen Name "Herr von Legua" ersetzt, da er schließlich persönlich in die Prinzessin verliebt ist. - Schoner Einblick in die Werkstatt des Autors.       - Detailed map shows the area of west Russia, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia with in-set bird’s eye view of Moscow and a view of Arkhangelsk. Very rare map of Russia by Hessel Gerritsz. Gerritsz was a Dutch cartographer and publisher, considered by some experts „unquestionably the chief Dutch cartographer of the 17th century" (Johannes Keuning "Hessel Gerritsz" (1949) Imago Mundi Vol. 6, pp. 46-66). In the first years of the 17th century he started cooperating with Willem Jansz Blaeu in Amsterdam and in 1610 he opened his own printing shop. His maps were published in atlases by Janssonius and Blaeu, amongst others. As an indipendant publisher he issued his famous map of Russia. The map has a very important place in the history of Russia. As mentioned in the cartouche, the draft was made personally by the Czar of Russia Feodor II Godunov (1589 – 1605), while he was only in his mid-teens. Feodor, a son of Czar Boris Godunov, was a highly intelligent and promising young ruler of Russia, known for his fine education. He was murdered by his opponents in 1605 when he was only 16 years old, during the period of the Russian history known as „Time of Troubles". This turbulent era lasted from the death of the last Russian Csar of the Rurik Dynasty, Feodor Ivanovich, in 1598, to the establishment of the Romanov Dynasty in 1613. Feodor’s manuscript map was brought to Amsterdam by a Dutch merchant and "Kremlinologist" Isaac Massa (1586 - 1643). Massa came to Russia in 1601 and witnessed the civil war in the „Time of Troubles". He left the country in 1609 accompanied with numerous documents including (allegedly) Feodor’s draft. Massa’s bringing the documents to Amsterdam was very risky and could be fatal for his Russian sources. For a long time his map of Siberia was the only printed map of the area and was copied by numerous other authors. In the years after moving back to the Netherlands Massa published texts about the events in Russia, including an almanac with a map of Russia in 1612-1613. The editor was Hessel Gerritsz. Gerritsz published a separately issued map of Russia, based on Czar Feodor’s draft brought to Amsterdam by Massa, in the same year, that was also a year of enthroning of the Tzar Michael I of Russia (Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov, 1596 – 1645), to whom the map is dedicaded. The family Romanov was reigning the country until the February Revolution in 1917. The bird’s eye view of Moscow, also based on Czar Feodor’s draft, first engraved as an in-set map on Gerritsz map became one of the most reproduced views of the city. In 1618 Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg replaced their older view of Moscow, based on 16th century Herberstin’s print, in their famous work Civitates Orbis Terrarum with Gerritsz-Massa’s view. Among other famous publishers Matthäus Merian copied this view as well as Gabriel Bodenehr as late as in the early 18th century. The second city on the map, Arkhangelsk, was the most important trading port for Moscow. As the Baltic sea was controlled by Sweden in the 16th century, Ivan the Terrible founded this city on the river Northern Dvina with the exit to the White Sea in 1584. The first state of the map by Gerritsz is extremely rare. A year later, he published a second, corrected state, present here, which is today also rare on the market. When Death Of A Salesman premiered in 1949, it was an instant success and secured Arthur Miller's place as one of the great American playwrights of the 20th century. It was the recipient of the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. The play premiered on Broadway in February 1949, running for 742 performances, and has been revived on Broadway four times, winning three Tony Awards for Best Revival.

A very good copy. Fenwick A12.a Nineteen Eighty-Four is a novel about a dystopian future in the year 1984. In the future Orwell has created, the totalitarian government controls the civilian population with a detailed system of mental and physical control, including omnipresent two-way TV screens that keep the citizens under constant surveillance. Any criticism of the government is strictly illegal, and independent thought is persecuted as a "thoughtcrime." Even the newly adopted language, "newspeak," which abbreviates many phrases and eliminates words deemed inessential, served "not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view" of the new totalitarian regime, but also "to make all other modes of thought impossible…. that is, a thought diverging from the [state approved] principles…should literally be unthinkable, in so far as though is dependent on words." First American edition. 1 vols. 12mo. Inscribed. Inscribed to the wife of New Yor Post columnist, Leonard Lyons, who was for many years one of New York's most prominent journalists. His column in the New York Post, "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues, however, Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB (Boston, 2000), "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor, it was said, did he ever violate a confidence ... He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants ... " (p. 131); and he counted among his friends celebrities as diverse as Ernest Hemingway (at whose funeral Lyons was pallbearer), Marilyn Monroe, and Orson Welles.Maugham has inscribed the flyleaf: "For Sylvia Lyons / W. In den Jahren 1927 bis 1931 besuchte er die Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich in der Klasse von Alfred Altherr. später erfolgte sein Übertritt in die Grafikklasse. wo er mit den Lehrern Walter Roshardt. Ernst Keller. Karl Hügin. Otto Meyer-Amden und Ernst Gubler in Kontakt kam. Ab 1932 arbeitete Gessner als selbständiger Gebrauchs-/Werbegrafiker und Maler. 1938 wurde er Mitglied der Künstlervereinigung allianz. die ein Jahr zuvor von Leo Leuppi und Richard Paul Lohse gegründet wurde und aus dem Kreis der Zürcher Konkreten hervorging. Von 1940 bis 1956 war Robert S. Gessner an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich Beauftragter für die Ausbildung von Lehrlingen und Volontären. 1944 und 1945 war er Hilfslehrer. von 1957 bis 1963 Fachlehrer für Zeichnen für Zeichnen. Prorektor bei Hans Fischer und Leiter der Lehrlingsbildung. In den Jahren 1957 bis 1963 folgten verschiedene Aufenthalte auf Ibiza. Im Impressum signiert und nummeriert. - 1873 im Privatverlag gedruckt, verblieb die Auflage bis auf wenige Vorab-Exemplare im Lager und galt bis zur Auffindung 1901 als von Rimbaud selbst vernichtet. Louis Favre hatte eine Ausbildung als Landvermesser und machte sich im jungen Alter auf, um in Paris Maler zu werden. In den zwanziger Jahren enteckte er nach langem Experimentieren die alte Technik der ägyptischen Wachsmalerei. Inscribed First edition.Langston Huges? poetry and fiction portrayed the lives of the working-class blacks in America, lives he portrayed as full of struggle, joy, laughter, and music. Permeating his work is pride in the African-American identity and its diverse culture. Hughes stressed a racial consciousness and cultural nationalism devoid of self-hate. His thought united people of African descent and Africa across the globe to encourage pride in their diverse black folk culture and black aesthetic. Hughes was one of the few prominent black writers to champion racial consciousness as a source of inspiration for black artists. His African-American race consciousness and cultural nationalism would influence many foreign black writers, including Jacques Roumain, Nicolás Guillén,Léopold Sédar Senghor, and Aimé Césaire. Along with the works of Senghor, Césaire, and other French-speaking writers of Africa and of African descent from the Caribbean, such as René Maran fromMartinique and Léon Damas from French Guiana in South America, the works of Hughes helped to inspire the Négritude movement in France. A radical black self-examination was emphasized in the face of European colonialism. In addition to his example in social attitudes, Hughes had an important technical influence by his emphasis on folk and jazz rhythms as the basis of his poetry of racial pride.
