[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First new version of the autograph manuscript of 17 pages, written in 1935. Manuscript writing very dense, full excluding the last 13 lines of printed text, with many erasures, corrections and additions. Complete typescript with a few variations from the manuscript and a copy of the first edition published in 1947 and finally published in 1950 is attached. In 1935, Blanchot has been working for 3 years on Thomas the Obscure (he completed in 1940) when interrupts his writing "that would not stop" to write the last word, a short story he describes as "an attempt to bypass another book underway to overcome the interminable and get a more linear narrative, yet painfully complex, a silent decision . ". In 1983, Blanchot, referring to the motivations of this "innocent text where murderers omens of future time resounded," can not say "how it is written and how unknown requirement, it has the answer." "It was not a text for publication," he says in the afterword of hindsight. The last word will indeed published 12 years later in 550 copies in the collection golden age (although it went bankrupt at the same time, the book will be on sale in 19 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Lucreia Borgia, original pen and ink caracature, from THE DECLINE AND FALL OF PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY

NP 1949 - Original pen and ink drawing, 2-5/8 inches x 4 inches on white laid paper, pencil notation "Lucrezia Borgia" below drawing and "downcast eyes" to left of drawing, in original frame with thank-you note from Phyllis Feldkamp. Preparatory sketch by New Yorker cartoonist, William Steig, for Will Cuppy's THE DECLINE AND FALL OF PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY published posthumously by editor, Fred Feldkamp. Lucretia Borgia is the fourth of five historical personalities covered in Chapter 3, "Strage Bedfellows." The image as reproduced in the book the same as this original piece of art with the exception of Lucretia's eyes which are "downcast" as noted in Steig's hand as a correction to the left of the portrait. A small change was the reversal of the dagger and poison bottle at either side of Lucretia. William Steig (1907-2003) American cartoonist and illustrator of children's books, most notably "Shrek" began drawing for "The New Yorker" in 1930. Humorist Will Cuppy (1884)-1949) was also a "New Yorker" contributor; Fred Feldkamp (1914-1981) was Cuppy's close friend and literary executor. Fred Feldkamp and his wife, Phillys, sorted through Cuppy's files and notes to finish writing THE DECLINE AND FALL OF PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY less than a year after their friend's death. Although known primarily for his 1990 publication of SHREK, William Steig's career as a cartoonist - he was called the "king of cartoons" - started as early as 1930 for "The New Yorker" and lasted throughout the 20th century. The success of THE DECLINE AND FALL OF PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY garnered fame for Cuppy and Steig and went through many printings. It is still a good read.

Death of a Salesman; Certain private conversations in two acts and a requiem

The Viking Press, new York 1949 - 8vo, 139pp; orange cloth. The first printing, with the printer identified and "March 1949" on the copyright page; dust with price of $2.50 on the front flap and photo of Miller on the rear flap. While not a rare book -- there are at any given given moment several dozen copies available, it is a difficult book to find in top condition. This does not quite fit that particular bill, but despite its stated flaws, it is a handsome copy and a good value. Mild dampstain affecting lower edge, especially on rear, slight shelf wear, still an unusually nice copy in an unfaded dust jacket with a pair of small closed tears to the front, loght rubbing to the extremities, and evidence of the aforementioned dampstain to the lower rear panel. A much nicer copy than it sounds. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The British Colour Council Dictionary of Colours for Interior Decoration

1949. BRITISH COLOUR COUNCIL. The British Colour Council Dictionary of Colours for Interior Decoration. 3 volumes (2 of colour samples and a third volume of text). III: xxi, [1], 28, [6, memoranda] pp. Two sample volumes, 255 x 200 mm, bound in matching red cloth bolted binders, together in a matching red slipcase with text volume, 260 x 210 mm, bound in red cloth with silver lettering and emblem on front cover. London: British Colour Council, 1949. |~||~||~||~| As the British Colour Council developed its services to industry it became apparent that the bias in the dictionary towards colours for textiles made it less relevant as a standard reference work for Interior Decoration. Some colours which were suitable for clothes were insufficiently permanent for application to carpets, curtains and upholstery fabric, while others were technically impracticable for use in the pottery and glass industries, in porcelain and vitreous enamel or in the making of paint or other materials used in decorating. In 1949 the Council published the "Dictionary of Colours for Interior Decoration". This work consisted of three volumes, two of colour samples and the other a slim list of names and a history of the colours. The 378 colours illustrated were shown on three surfaces - matt, gloss and a pile fabric (like carpet). One reference name and number was given for the colour shown in three forms, and it was stressed that the surface required should be made clear when the Dictionary was used to specify a colour match. Number 924 of 7500 copies.

Illus.. 1949–52 Complete set of the => entire 15-volume run of the Evergreen Tales, the Limited Editions Club's only books specifically produced and labelled as being for children — the Club's gathering of what they considered to be the most beloved and time-honored of classic children's stories. Edited by Jean Hersholt, these lovingly prepared renditions were illustrated by some of the LEC's biggest names, including Arthur Szyk, Edy Legrand, Raffaelo Busoni, Fritz Eichenberg, et al. Many of the volumes are signed at the colophon by Hersholt, and => illustrators who signed are: Edward Ardizzone, Everett Gee Jackson, Ervine Metzl, Robert Lawson, Henry C. Pitz, Busoni, and Eichenberg. These examples are numbered copy 238 of either 2000 or 2500 printed depending on the set (except for one trio out of the five, which is numbered 236); the appropriate LEC newsletter is present. Publisher's cloth of various colors, eight volumes in the original glassine dust wrappers, all in publisher's red paper–covered slipcases with printed paper spine labels; some wrappers with tears or chips, slipcase spines gently sunned, slipcases showing light shelfwear overall with Aladdin case dust-soiled, Emperor's New Clothes' spine lettering rubbed. Ali Baba and a few other volumes with scattered spots of light foxing, overall most pages clean. Newsletter moderately worn. Complete sets are uncommon; this one shows no signs of having been in the hands of any actual child.

THE CASE OF THE NEGLIGENT NYMPH (Intimately Inscribed)

William Morrow 1949 - Gardner, Erle Stanley. THE CASE OF THE NEGLIGENT NYMPH. New York: William Morrow, (1949). First Edition. A FINE bright copy in a NEAR FINE priced dust jacket (trifling edge wear, a few stray scratches to the front panel, a tiny stain on the rear panel). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Tee Rose, who can find words on a paper that really arouse emotions. My love and best for a rosy 1950. Yours, Erle" Underneath this, he has signed his full name "Erle Stanley Gardner/ Dec 1949." Not much is known of the recipient, as yet, other than she did write a story for Argosy Magazine in the late 1940s that appeared in the same issue as one of Gardner's. Erle Stanley Gardner occasionally signed copies of his books for friends and people he worked with but rarely did he inscribe a book so intimately. See our other copies from the same primary source by using key words Tee Rose. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
