A pre-publication, uncased publisher's copy with sewn signatures, pictorial endpapers, some uneven toning. Signed by Arthur Miller in a contemporary signature. Housed in publisher's cloth slipcase. We have been unable to find a comparable example, most likely one a few copies published before the last transit stage from manuscript to book. A rare example of one of the highspots of twentieth century literature. When Death Of A Salesman premiered in 1949, it was an instant success and secured Arthur Miller's place as one of the great American playwrights of the 20th century. It was the recipient of the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. The play premiered on Broadway in February 1949, running for 742 performances, and has been revived on Broadway four times, winning three Tony Awards for Best Revival.

Limited edition copy 54 of 110 copies (from a total edition of 123), with an extra suite of black and white plates signed by Jouve and the publisher on the colophon. 13 colored etchings, three are double-page. Text printed with red borders, each with Egyptian-themed headpiece heightened in brownish gold. It blends together the heterogeneous stories of a soldier lost in Egypt during Napoleon's campaign, a wild panther named after a dangerous woman, and a couple in Paris leaving a popular show. It presents the two different locales of Egypt and Paris, yet the two places ultimately harbor the same kind of inhabitants (soldiers and wild beasts). Jouve, French painter and sculptor was notable for his paintings and sculptures of Africa's animals. Contents loose as issued, faux snakeskin board and chemise and slipcase. Modest and minor marginal toning.

Publisher's light green cloth, top edge stained red; in the original green dust jacket designed by Michael Kennard (issued simultaneously in red, without any priority between them), lettered in white. Near fine, with some light toning to the spine and board edges, bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and minor chips to the extremities, some rubbing to the hinges, otherwise bright spine, clean panels. A very good copy. Fenwick A12.a Nineteen Eighty-Four is a novel about a dystopian future in the year 1984. In the future Orwell has created, the totalitarian government controls the civilian population with a detailed system of mental and physical control, including omnipresent two-way TV screens that keep the citizens under constant surveillance. Any criticism of the government is strictly illegal, and independent thought is persecuted as a "thoughtcrime." Even the newly adopted language, "newspeak," which abbreviates many phrases and eliminates words deemed inessential, served "not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view" of the new totalitarian regime, but also "to make all other modes of thought impossible…. that is, a thought diverging from the [state approved] principles…should literally be unthinkable, in so far as though is dependent on words." His column in the New York Post, "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues, however, Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB (Boston, 2000), "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor, it was said, did he ever violate a confidence ... He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants ... " (p. 131); and he counted among his friends celebrities as diverse as Ernest Hemingway (at whose funeral Lyons was pallbearer), Marilyn Monroe, and Orson Welles.Maugham has inscribed the flyleaf: "For Sylvia Lyons / W. Somerset Maugham."

Ernst Keller. Karl Hügin. Otto Meyer-Amden und Ernst Gubler in Kontakt kam. Ab 1932 arbeitete Gessner als selbständiger Gebrauchs-/Werbegrafiker und Maler. 1938 wurde er Mitglied der Künstlervereinigung allianz. die ein Jahr zuvor von Leo Leuppi und Richard Paul Lohse gegründet wurde und aus dem Kreis der Zürcher Konkreten hervorging. Von 1940 bis 1956 war Robert S. Gessner an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich Beauftragter für die Ausbildung von Lehrlingen und Volontären. 1944 und 1945 war er Hilfslehrer. von 1957 bis 1963 Fachlehrer für Zeichnen für Zeichnen. Prorektor bei Hans Fischer und Leiter der Lehrlingsbildung. In den Jahren 1957 bis 1963 folgten verschiedene Aufenthalte auf Ibiza. Im Impressum signiert und nummeriert. - 1873 im Privatverlag gedruckt, verblieb die Auflage bis auf wenige Vorab-Exemplare im Lager und galt bis zur Auffindung 1901 als von Rimbaud selbst vernichtet. Louis Favre hatte eine Ausbildung als Landvermesser und machte sich im jungen Alter auf, um in Paris Maler zu werden. In den zwanziger Jahren enteckte er nach langem Experimentieren die alte Technik der ägyptischen Wachsmalerei. Inscribed First edition.Langston Huges? poetry and fiction portrayed the lives of the working-class blacks in America, lives he portrayed as full of struggle, joy, laughter, and music. Permeating his work is pride in the African-American identity and its diverse culture. Hughes stressed a racial consciousness and cultural nationalism devoid of self-hate. His thought united people of African descent and Africa across the globe to encourage pride in their diverse black folk culture and black aesthetic. Hughes was one of the few prominent black writers to champion racial consciousness as a source of inspiration for black artists. His African-American race consciousness and cultural nationalism would influence many foreign black writers, including Jacques Roumain, Nicolás Guillén,Léopold Sédar Senghor, and Aimé Césaire. Along with the works of Senghor, Césaire, and other French-speaking writers of Africa and of African descent from the Caribbean, such as René Maran fromMartinique and Léon Damas from French Guiana in South America, the works of Hughes helped to inspire the Négritude movement in France. A radical black self-examination was emphasized in the face of European colonialism. In addition to his example in social attitudes, Hughes had an important technical influence by his emphasis on folk and jazz rhythms as the basis of his poetry of racial pride. Okt. 1920 in Ihrer Hand sein. Sie sind alle sehr leicht und dankbar zu spielen, mit ganz wenigen Personen, in einem nur ihrer zwei, davon die eine stumm spielt. (Es giebt [!] bei Strindberg eine ähnliche Szene). Ich zweifle nicht, sondern weiß, daß ich mit diesen Dramoletts eine Kunstart anschneide, die mir liegt und mir gestattet, das Dramatische in Essenz zu geben, selbst das verdorbene Kino ‚Publikum’ zu spannen [.]" (a. d. Br. v. 22. September 1920). – „Seien Sie herzlich bedankt für Ihre freundliche Einladung zu den Heidelberger Festspielen. November 1927). – Hermann Strübe, so Burte mit bürgerlichem Namen, studierte in Paris den französischen Impressionismus, war mit einem Volksroman bei einem Preisausschreiben erfolgreich und wählte den Namen des Helden als Pseudonym. Fortan als Schriftsteller und Maler tätig, erschien 1912 „unter dem Eindruck der Vorkriegsstimmung der völkisch-nationalistische Heimatroman ‚Wiltfeber, der ewige Deutsche’, in dem durch die Verehrung eines aristokratischen Führers und das Streben nach Erneuerung des Volkstums wesentliche Elemente der nationalsozialistischen Ideologie vorweggenommen wurden. Willig übernahm er die Rolle eines Propagandadichters und rechtfertigte die Judenverfolgung. Nach dem Krieg wurde sein nationalsozialistisches Engagement weitgehend ausgeklammert, und er blieb in seiner süddeutschen Heimat geschätzt" (DBE), 1957 wurde er gar mit der Jean-Paul-Medaille ausgezeichnet. – Tls. mit größeren Einrissen und sonstigen Gebrauchsspuren; der Br. v. 22. An attractive and richly-coloured image, done as the frontispiece for an early '50s edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales - the title has been written by Baynes in pencil at the foot of the image, whilst it is signed in the bottom-right corner with a spread-eagle device that was not used in her later work. The frontispiece reproducing this image (as often the reproduction is poor when set next to the original) is the only major illustration in the accompanying 1960s edition of the book. Best known for her work for Lewis and Tolkien, this is very accomplished early illustration work by Pauline Baynes whose affinity with the subject-matter is testified to by her returning to the world of Fairy and Folk Tales throughout her career.

Fantastical painting by Robert Riggs, showing two Indian warriors performing the Sun Dance, the first with ropes attached to piercings on his chest, and the second attached by piercings at his eyelids. Buffalo skulls also swing from ropes attached to the dancers, while they hold feather-covered leather shields. Blood streams from all their piercings. In classic Riggs style, each bead on the moccasins of the dancers is picked out clearly, and the painting is thick with Native details. Robert Riggs (1896-1970) was in his heyday one of the best-known artists and illustrators in the United States. After studies at the Art Students League and service during World War I, Riggs settled in Philadelphia, his home base for the rest of his life. In the 1930s and '40s he rose to national prominence as an illustrator, lithographer, and commercial artist, producing well-known images of boxers and circuses (two life-long obsessions), and of soldiers during World War II. In 1940, around the peak of his career as an illustrator, his drawings commanded $750-$1500 each, and his name was as well-known in the trade as that of Norman Rockwell. But Riggs loathed this commercial work, and after 1950 he slid increasingly into obscurity, although revered by those who knew him in the Philadelphia art world. When he died in 1970, he was almost forgotten. Riggs was never comfortable working in oils or watercolor, preferring dry mediums such as pencil and charcoal. For the few large paintings he created, he employed a technique of blending dry pigments with mastic varnish and alcohol, working on panels he had especially manufactured for his use. This technique, which creates a surface similar to the look of egg tempera, adds to the extraordinary character of Riggs' major compositions. Riggs had a particular fascination with American Indians. In his days of affluence during the Depression and World War II, he formed a major collection of American Indian artifacts. According to his biographer, he owned "an odd and unsettling collection of American Indian artifacts...He was a serious and widely read amateur anthropologist, whose hobby, an expensive one into which he happily poured much of his substantial income...was guided in part by Frank N. Speck of the University of Pennsylvania, a friend who was perhaps the foremost authority then on Indians of the Northeast." This collection played an important part in the creation of the present painting, and particular artifacts depicted are probably based on items in his collection. Riggs clearly went to great lengths to make the finely realized details of his painting completely accurate. His own collections and his friendship with Speck aided him in this (Riggs did small drawings of artifacts for several of Speck's publications). Thus, such details as the figures' elaborate body paint are based on Riggs' understanding of the Native American traditions and practices at work in the ceremony. At the same time, the distortions of scale and perspective typical of Riggs' flamboyant paintings are fully in evidence.

With its original light green boards and red lettering to the spine, the only flaws to speak of are a slight lean and fading to the spine, very slight bumping to the base of the spine and some minor ageing and spotting to the pastedowns and the free endpapers. Otherwise, the pages remain bright and clean. The book is encased in its original, unclipped  red dustjacket, which is in Very Good + condition. There is some wear to the edges of the wrapper, fading to the spine and a small tear at the base of the front cover. The jacket is worn at the spine ends, predominantly at the top, with a small section torn away. The back panel of the jacket has been smudged with red ink. The second book by this artist who is perhaps most famous as a New Yorker cover artist and cartoonist: his "View of the World from 9th Avenue" became an iconic and satirical comment on New Yorkers' self-centered view of their place in the world. This book comprises about 300 Steinberg drawings, most published here for the first time. Between the publication of his first book and this one, Steinberg had been selected for the prestigious show "Fourteen Americans" at the Museum of Modern Art, along with such artists as Robert Motherwell, Ahile Gorky, I. Rice Pereira, and others, and is considered to have been the show that "proclaimed the arrival of Abstract Expressionism" in 1946. This copy is inscribed by Steinberg to Peter Matthiessen, "with affectionate greetings" and dated December 25, 1985. Elegantly matted and framed to 26.5"" x 20.75"" with a large color portrait of Ledbetter playing guitar.Ledbetter writes, in full: ""Dear mrs Fairbanks[,] i rec[eived] som[e] money From my Bass [player] He is all right But He was slow[.] i did[']n[t] [kn]ow whot [sic] was the mat[t]er But now i [kn]ow so Don[']t warrie [sic] we got every thing in front of us Take care of your Self and say Hello to Clif[f]ord [Manz] for me and martha H Ledbetter"" Although he is identified primarily with his solo-guitar work, in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Ledbetter began playing with jazz ensembles?"part of the burgeoning New Orleans jazz revival. Huddie discovered that he was being credited as an important source in the development of jazz when music historians Charles Edward Smith and Frederick Ramsey, Jr. began inquiring into the roots of his music. In the early to mid 1940s, Ledbetter toured with several jazz and blues bands including combos headed by the likes of Bunk Johnson, Brownie McGhee and Art Hodes. Around June 1946, he recorded five songs in New York with George ""Pops"" Foster on bass (together with Willie ""The Lion"" Smith on piano, Sonny Terry on harmonica, and Brownie McGhee on guitar). During January and February 1949 he made several radio appearances on the WNYC Jazz Festival as well as a $75 gig at the Jazz Band Ball in February and in the same month he joined the musicians union (Charles K. Wolfe, Life and Legend of Leadbelly, 1992, pp. 232-244).
