AN EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF BOOKS ILLUSTRATED WITH ORIGINAL PRINTS AND DRAWINGS BY MAURICE LEROY. Le bon plaisir, Le malheureux petit voyage, La belle sans chemise, Le Diable amoureux, La Fille aux yeux d'or, etc.

Paris: various publishers, 1939-1948 - AN UNPARALLELED COLLECTION OF ILLUSTRATED BOOKS BY ONE OF THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED BOOK ARTISTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. ALL OF THESE BOOKS ARE ILLUSTRATED WITH ORIGINAL COPPER ENGRAVINGS / ETCHINGS /AQUATINTS / ROULETTES. Maurice Leroy, like many other illustrators of his time, specialized in lightly erotic depictions of feminine beauty. Unlike virtually all the other illustrators of his time, however, he infused tremendous imagination into his prints, and demonstrated absolute mastery of all the major techniques of draftsmanship and copper engraving. The ten books in this collection all come from the height of his career, and most of them are SPECIAL COPIES WITH ADDITIONAL SUITES OF THE PRINTS AND/OR ORIGINAL DRAWINGS. (1) Le Diable amoureux, by Cazotte. One of only a few copies with the prints beautifully illuminated by hand; (2) Another copy of the same, one of 127 copies with a remarque suite; (3) Le malheureux petit Voyage, by Soulages. One of only 25 copies (tete) with an original drawing used for one of the illustrations (signed), a second suite in color, a suite in black, and a second suite of the wood-engraved decorations by Poilliot. Beautifully bound in full leather with original color drawings by Leroy on both covers; (4) La Belle sans chemise, ou Eve ressuscitee. A unique artist's copy, with a stunning original color drawing (signed), a remarque suite, and four (likely unique) color separation proofs; (5) Le bon Plaisir, by Henri de Regnier. One of 36 copies (tete) with an original color drawing used for one of the illustrations (signed), a remarque suite in color, and a remarque suite in black; (6) L'Eloge de la folie, by Erasmus. One of 75 copies with a remarque suite and the "planche refusee"; (7) Le roman de Tristan et Iseut. One of 24 copies with two suites of the etchings and an original watercolor; (8-10) Three other limited-edition books with original prints. 4tos. Except for the bound volume (described above), all loose as issued in board chemises and slipcases. One slipcase damaged, else FINE AND BRIGHT, INSIDE AND OUT. A monumental collection, a testament to the artist's varied and profound talent. OVER 1,000 PRINTS IN ALL. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Second World War

      - London, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney and Wellington - Cassell and Co, 1948. - London, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney and Wellington - Cassell and Co, 1948 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A set of five volumes from Churchill's most famous and popular work, The Second World War. All are first editions, and first impressions. The Second World War is a history of the period from the end of the First World War to July 1945, written by Winston Churchill. It was largely responsible for his being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. Churchill labelled the moral of the work as follows: In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Goodwill. When Churchill assumed office in 1940, he fully intended to write a history of the war then beginning. He said several times: I will leave judgements on this matter to history but I will be one of the historians. To circumvent the rules against the use of official documents, he took the precaution throughout the war of having a weekly summary of correspondence, minutes, memorandum and other documents printed in galleys and headed Prime Minister's personal minutes. These were then stored at his home for future use. As well, Churchill actually wrote or dictated a number of letters and memoranda with the specific intention of placing his views on the record for later use as a historian. These arrangements became a source of controversy when The Second World War began appearing in 1948. Churchill was not an academic historian, he was a politician, and was in fact Leader of the Opposition, still intending to return to office, so his access to Cabinet, military and diplomatic records, which was denied to other historians, was questioned. Churchill's privileged access to documents and his unrivalled personal knowledge gave him an advantage over all other historians of the Second World War for many years. With many folding maps, and several illustrationsthroughout the text. Theseworks had enormouspopularity in both Britain and the United States. While Churchill's name appears on the book's cover as the author, he did not write the book alone: it was put together by young researchers. The Second World War, particularly the period between 1940 and 1942 when Britain was fighting with only the support of the Empire and a few Allies, was the climax of Churchill's career and his personal account of the inside story of those days is unique and invaluable. Allvolumes feature their original unclipped dustwrapper. Volumes oneto five of the originalsix volumes. Condition: In original cloth bindings withtheir original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, dustwrappers are bright, although with chipping andclosed tears to the extremities. As well as someloss to the spine of volume one. Cloth has some damp staining to the spines, and some light rubbing to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean, aside from some spotting to the textblock edges, and the odd handling mark. Neat ink signature tot he front pastedown of each volume. Overall: GOODwith GOOD ONLY dustwrappers.

Physical Principles Involved in Transistor Action

New York and Lancaster, PA: American Telephone and Telegraph Company and American Physical Society. New York and Lancaster, PA: American Telephone and Telegraph Company and American Physical Society. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the first description of the invention of the transistor, published simultaneously in The Physical Review and The Bell System Technical Journal. BOTH JOURNALS INCLUDED. "In the 1930s, Bell Labs scientists were trying to use ultrahigh frequency waves for telephone communications, and needed a more reliable detection method than the vacuum tube, which proved incapable of picking up rapid vibrations... John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley spearheaded the Bell Labs effort to develop a new means of amplification," developing, by 1948, a novel device that would effectively amplify and control electric signals. "At roughly half an inch high, the first transistor was huge by today's standards, when 7 million transistors can fit onto a single silicon chip. But it was the very first solid state device capable of doing the amplification work of a vacuum tube, earning Bardeen, Brattain and Shockley the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956. More significantly, it spawned an entire industry and ushered in the Information Age, revolutionizing global society" (The American Physical Society). The 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded jointly to William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect". In: The Bell System Technical Journal, Vol. 28, No. 2, April 1949 (pp. 239-277). New York: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1949. Octavo, original wrappers. The Heart of the Matter

New York: The Viking Press, 1948. New York: The Viking Press, 1948. First American edition of what many consider the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For Bob Goldstein from Graham Greene Nothing under $200,000." Light wear, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.The Heart of the Matter tells the story of a good man enmeshed in love, intrigue, and evil in a West African coastal town. Scobie is bound by strict integrity to his role as assistant police commissioner and by severe responsibility to his wife, Louise, for whom he cares with a fatal pity. When Scobie falls in love with the young widow Helen, he finds vital passion again yielding to pity, integrity giving way to deceit and dishonor—a vortex leading directly to murder. As Scobie's world crumbles, his personal crisis develops the foundation of a story by turns suspenseful, fascinating, and, finally, tragic. ''Graham Greene was in a class by himself...He will be read and remembered as the ultimate chronicler of twentieth-century man's consciousness and anxiety" (William Golding).

An interesting account of Auguste Piccard's experiments with high-altitude ballooning. In Danish. Illustrated with numerous photographic plates and diagrams. Auguste Antoine Piccard (28 January 1884 24 March 1962) was a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer. In 1930, an interest in ballooning, and a curiosity about the upper atmosphere led him to design a spherical, pressurised aluminium gondola that would allow ascent to great altitude without requiring a pressure suit. On 27 May 1931, Auguste Piccard and Paul Kipfer took off from Augsburg, Germany, and reached a record altitude of 15,785 m (51,788 ft). During this flight, Piccard was able to gather substantial data on the upper atmosphere, as well as measure cosmic rays. He ultimately made a total of twenty-seven balloon flights, setting a final record of 23,000 m (75,459 ft). Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled paper-covered boards. The Heart of the Matter

New York: The Viking Press, 1948.. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Heart of the Matter tells the story of a good man enmeshed in love, intrigue, and evil in a West African coastal town.

        The Second World War

      - London, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney and Wellington - Cassell and Co, 1948. - London, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney and Wellington - Cassell and Co, 1948 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A complete set of Churchill's most famous work. First edition, first impression. Four of the volumes feature their original unclipped dustwrapper. Complete in six volumes. Condition: In original cloth bindings with four original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, dustwrappers are bright, although with chipping, closed tears, and occasional loss. Cloth has some damp staining. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean, aside from a few instances of light marks to the textblock edges, and the odd handling mark. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEEDwithFAIR dustwrappers.
