THE TRAVELLING GRAVE AND OTHER STORIES

Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House,. 1948. Octavo,. cloth.. Mild bump to upper spine end, a fine copy in fine dust jacket with. touch of rubbing to upper spine end. A very nice copy. This book is. rarely found signed or inscribed by Hartley. (#132179). First edition. Signed by Hartley on the front free endpaper: "With the best wishes of the / the writer, / Leslie Hartley." 2047 copies printed. Hartley scattered supernatural material throughout his short story collections, as well as the mainstream novels, such as THE GO-BETWEEN, for which he is better known. The present volume concentrates most of this material in one collection. The author worked mainly as a critic and reviewer, writing fiction on the side and bringing to it a sensibility that fused "a Hobbesian view of human nature [and] a childlike rapture ..." (Sullivan, The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 193) Such a fusing of horror and humor shows up in many masters of the fantastic, such as Dickens, Bierce, M. R. James and W. W. Jacobs. "Stylistically, Hartley is peerless, bringing to his genre fiction the same elegant precision that characterizes his major novels. The ghost story, he once wrote, is 'if not the highest, certainly the most exacting form of literary art.' No one was more exacting in the genre than Hartley himself." - ibid, p. 192.         Roads ---a Copy Signed By Seabury Quinn and Virgil Finlay ( Signed Twice By Finlay )

Sauk City, WI.: Arkham House, 1948, 1st Arkham House Edition, 1st Printing - -----------hardcover, The condition of the book is a solid Very Good with just a wee bit of age toning to paper and endpapers. This copy was exposed to smoke from a fire and has resulted in the page edges being darkened. I should mention though that there is no smoke smell. The dustjacket is one of the nicest that I have seen. This dustjacket is prone to rubbing to the black and gold stock. This copy has very minimal rubbing, with the rear white panel being nice and bright. Clearly a mylar protector was on the book at the time of the exposure to the smoke, this is a dandy copy of this classic Santa Claus story, this is one of the truly rare copies as it is signed by Seabury Quinn on the half-title page without inscription, as well this copy is signed and inscribed by Virgil Finlay on the half title page -----and, Finlay has also signed and inscribed the Finaly designed dustjacket, he signed the dustjacket on the front flap at the top near the price (Finlay's inscription is to a past Worldcon chair, and well known bookseller), a truly one of a kind item, anything signed by Quinn is rare, signed copies of the Arkham House edition of Roads is VERY RARE and to be combined with the signature of one of the truly great pulp artists ---- well, this is THEE copy , any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

To Say if You Love Someone

Prairie City: Decker Press. (1948). An unrecorded variant of this uncommon title. Gray cloth with the same design as that of the apparently first issue yellow cloth, in a blue dust jacket with gold and black lettering, a price of $1 and the words "THE ARCHIVE of Duke University" in place of "Louis Untermeyer" on the dust jacket copy. According to Morgan, Decker printed about 200 copies of this title, about 20 of which were the first issue, although Morgan doesn't account for all known variants. Shortly after printing this book, Decker disappeared and his car was found abandoned, a mystery that was never solved. Fine in a mildly sunned, else fine dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover.

        HELLENIC NATIONAL COSTUMES

Hadzimichali, Angeliki & Nicolas Sperling. Antony E. Benaki, Editor. HELLENIC NATIONAL COSTUMES. Athens, GREECE: Benaki Museum, 1948. First Edition 1/300. Elephant Folio. Loose Plates in Portfolio. Costume Monograph. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. 28pp, 55 color plates. Text in Greek, English and French. Limited to three hundred copies only, this exquisite undertaking issued by Athens' Benaki Museum features fifty-five full page color illustrations by Nicolas Sperling housed in its original full tan linen over boards portfolio with ties. It was the first of two independent volumes (the second was published in 1954) and a supplement that totaled one hundred and eleven reproductions in all. Divided into the categories of "Gala Dresses and Town Dresses", "Dresses of Continental Greece", and "Dresses of Peloponnesus, Thessaly, the Island of Euboea, Epirus, and Macedonia", it artfully surveys traditional Greek folk costume of the early twentieth century. A handsome example of this enormous, uncommon standard work on the subject showing some creasing, soiling, and staining to the portfolio, while the plates themselves are fresh and bright with just a tiny crease and/or a bit of age toning here or there.

Borgers aan Lekkerkerker, 9 december 1948: 'Fusie Criterium-Libertinage: prachtig man.

PROOFS OF SOME EARLY NINETEENTH-CENTURY WOODBLOCKS FOR TEA AND TOBACCO PAPERS WITH A NOTE ON THEIR USE

Kensington, England: Privately printed, 1948. quarter cloth, gilt-decorated paper-covered boards, label with title on spine. 4to. quarter cloth, gilt-decorated paper-covered boards, label with title on spine. (ii), 51, (3) pages. Limited to 50 copies. Original wood blocks from the author's collection used for tea and tobacco wrapping papers, mostly from the 19th century, were used to print specimens in this scarce book. Tea and tobacco were two of Britain's most noted imports through the 18th and 19th centuries. A brief introduction explains the historical context noting that factory packed products had supplanted packaging by local grocers or tobaccanists. Brief descriptions of both tea and tobacco paper blocks also included, with references. Tipped in specimens of both tea and tobacco papers, showing their various sizes and colors. An important look at papermaking and advertising. Spine sunned.

        (1) UNIVAC summary report. Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation, chapters 1 &#150; 4. (2) UNIVAC instructions code C-7

1948. <p>UNIVAC. (1) UNIVAC summary report. Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation, chapters 1 &#150; 4. Mimeographed typescript. [1], 28ff. N.p., n.d. [1948]. 268 x 200 mm. Original printed wrappers (wrappers measure 280 x 216 mm.), edges a little frayed, a few rust-stains. Some marginal pencil annotations by a former owner. (2) UNIVAC instructions code C-7. Mimeographed typescript. 9ff., including full-page mimeographed diagram. A few tiny marginal tears; a few pencil annotations by former owner. Together 2 items. Very good.</p> <p>First Editions. In late September 1946, Eckert and Mauchly&#146;s fledgling Electronic Control Company formally contracted to supply the United States Census Bureau with an electronic digital computer, an event that marks the beginning of the commercial computer industry. Since the Census Bureau was forbidden by law to enter into any research and development contracts, a complex financing arrangement was worked out between ECC (renamed the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation in 1947), the Census Bureau, and the National Bureau of Standards in which the money was funneled via the Census Bureau to the NBS, which then used it to fund the development of the machine. The design and construction of this computer&#151;the first UNIVAC I&#151;took longer than anticipated, largely due to the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation&#146;s continuing financial difficulties. The Census Bureau did not take possession of its computer until 1951, by which time the EMCC had become a subsidiary of Remington Rand. </p> <p>No. (1) &#147;is a summary of a report on the UNIVAC prepared by the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (Electronic Control Company) and transmitted to the National Bureau of Standards in November, 1947&#148; (first leaf). The present summary, prepared by the NBS&#146;s Machine Development Laboratory, includes descriptions of the UNIVAC&#146;s equipment and basic engineering design principles, as well as a copy of version C-6 of the UNIVAC&#146;s instruction codes &#147;valid as of April 1948&#148; (p. 7). As the name indicates, C-6 was the sixth revision of the machine&#146;s initial instruction code C-1, devised in 1947. The code went through at least one more revision&#151;C-7&#151;in 1948, which is included here (no. [2]). &#147;Code C-7 differs from C-6 in only two respects; (1) the number of words in a block have been reduced to 60 from 100, and (2) a few of the character assignments in the pulse code have been altered&#148; (p. 1). Origins of Cyberspace 1135 (C-7). </p>

[Buenos Aires, 1948] - Inscribed on the mount by Perón in Spanish, on December 23, 1948, to the internationally renowned dentist, Dr. Stanley D. Tylman, "in gratitude for his services to Argentina and the friendliness he has shown me with his exquisite delicacy . " "Born in 1893, dentist Stanley D. Tylman not only taught more than 1,000 students at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in his long career as a Professor of Dentistry (1920-1962) and head of the Department of Fixed Partial Prosthodontics, but he influenced countless dentists internationally as well. "Tylman was particularly effective as a global educational force because he spoke four languages. His international lecture schedule took him to Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and South America--including Argentina, where he performed dental work for President Juan Peron and First Lady Evita Peron.         La Lampe dans l'horloge. Avec une lithographie originale de Toyen.

Robert Marin, Paris 1948 - Paris, Robert Marin, 1948. Coll. Two staples near the top of the letter have been pulled through resulting in modest chips, penciled note about the release, presumably in the hand of Norton, else very good.         THE TRAVELLING GRAVE AND OTHER STORIES.

Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1948 - Octavo, cloth. The author worked mainly as a critic and reviewer, writing fiction on the side and bringing to it a sensibility that fused "a Hobbesian view of human nature [and] a childlike rapture ." (Sullivan, The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 192. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-80. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 4-113. Mild bump to upper spine end, a fine copy in fine dust jacket with touch of rubbing to upper spine end. A very nice copy. This book is rarely found signed or inscribed by Hartley. (#132179) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
