Meidosems. From the collection of Asger Jorn.

Chemise défraîchie / With 13 original lithographs by Michaux, hereof one the cover. Dustjacket worn. Interior and all the 13 plates fine and very well preserved. More pictures available upon request.. Édition originale / First edition, one of 250 copies , a special copy from the library of AsgerJorn. The book is not signed by Jorn but comes with a letter of provenance and a copy of the Danish Michaux exhibition catalogue from the Michaux exhibition Asger Jorn curated (Henri Michaux. Silkeborg. 1962) with dedication from Asger Jorn to his son. Asger Jorn was fascinated by Michaux' s art and the characters and symbols in Michaux's work and donated a considerable number of his works to Museum Jorn, Silkeborg. On several occasions Jorn bought drawings by Michaux, which - in the 1950s - had not yet attracted much attention and were therefore affordable. Asger Jorn wrote on Michaux: "Language is the most useful set of symbols a human being has at his disposal if he wishes to communicate. But its very unambiguousness limits its artistic wealth of expression unlike, for example, that of music. Michaux has created tremendously musical poetry. But that has not been enough for him. He came up against one of the problems, which is perhaps the most intolerable problem of all in today's culture. The limits of language dividing people. He made a conscious decision to cleanse his poetry by turning to the creation of a graphic poetry, a picture idiom, where letters or characters are not bound to concepts that risk limiting poetic flow. The reason I choose to put so much emphasis on the "letters" or symbols that Henri Michaux has created, and find his work so fascinating is that - in my opinion - they reflect a very special form of humanism ... In Michaux's humanism, man is artistic, Faustian, demonic-divine, homo ludens, a great player, a human being who embraces all other human beings from the beginning of time, in the history of man, a human being who calls nothing "inhuman" that has been done, thought or said by humans - a human being who opens all doors."         The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd,, 1948?-54. 6 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, titles gilt to spines, top edges red, grey endpapers decorated with a design that alternates a lion rampant with the initials "W.S.C." In the typographical dust jackets with background design as per the endpapers. Housed in a Chelsea Bindery custom slipcase. Maps and diagrams, some folding. Contemporary bookplate to front pastedown of Volume I, bookseller's tickets to front pastedown of Volumes II and III. Light foxing to edges, prelims, and endmatter of Volume I, minor spotting to cloth of Volume II. An excellent set in jackets with lightly faded spine panels, all but one volume price-clipped. First editions, first impressions, of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War. Volume I inscribed by Churchill on the half-title: "Inscribed by Winston S. Churchill, 1950." Max Beloff observed that there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking." A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted in his essay in A. J. P. Taylor's Churchill: Four Faces and the Man "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there… [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity."

        THE WRAITH OF GAWAIN

The Press of James Decker, Prairie City 1948 - SIGNED and inscribed by author: "To John L. Potts - who, since he keeps my other books, may as well keep this one too. Sincerely, Erwin H. Tax, 12 October, 1948." A RARE piece of American literary history and a real treasure. In grey boards with silver lettering. The dust jacket has a few very minor nicks and is darkened a little with age on the spine and back panel, otherwise about fine. The Decker Press received national attention when it published works by Edgar Lee Masters, August Derleth, Kenneth Patchen, Kenneth Rexroth, etc. in the tiny midwestern town of Prairie City. Tax, the author of this epic poem, "The Wraith of Gawain" eventually gained ownership of the Press by default, only to have it all end in a murder-suicide over unrequited love. Extremely scarce in jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Naked and the Dead

New York: Rinehart and Company, 1948. First edition of the author's first book. Thick octavo, original black boards. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to journalist Joe Haas, "For Joe Haas in Jamaica after our Lady Norman Mailer May 1969." Some of the usual rubbing to the boards, near fine in a very good first issue price-clipped dust jacket with light wear to the extremities. Norman Mailer claimed to have four books on his desk while he wrote The Naked and the Dead: Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, Wolfe's Of Time and the River, Dos Passos' U.S.A. and Farrell's Studs Lonigan. It was with this tongue partly in cheek that he asserted that the "overspirit is Tolstoy, the rococo comes out of Dos Passos, the fundamental slogging style from Farrell and the occasional overrich descriptions from Wolfe." The Naked and the Dead follows the story of an army platoon of foot soldiers fighting for the Japanese island of Anopopei. "The best novel to come out of the . . . war, perhaps the best book to come out of any war" (San Francisco Chronicle). "The narrative presents, with great accuracy and power, the agony of the American troops in the Pacific campaign It remains Mailer’s best, and certainly the best war novel to emerge from the United States" (Burgess, 42-43).
