        Jazz News. Revue Mensuelle

Paris: Jazz News,, 1948-50. Nos. 1 -11, complete. Octavo. Wire-stitched in the original pictorial wraps. Housed in chemise in a black flat back cloth solander box. Profusely illustrated. A little rubbed on the wraps, a few minor edge-splits, staples rusted, but overall a very good set. First edition. Short-lived, but highly influential French jazz magazine of the immediate post-war years. Early enthusiasts for bebop. Founded by legendary promoter and producer Eddie Barclay, it counted amongst its contributors some of the most prominent figures on the French jazz scene, Claude Abadie, Eddy Bernard, Hubert Rostaing, and the editor-in-chief for the last four issues, Boris Vian, trumpeter, author, friend of Sartre and de Beauvoir, and 'pataphysician. The numerous photographs which illustrate each issue seem particularly stylish and well-chosen. Complete sets are uncommon.

The Second World War, full set of six British first editions

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1948. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Here is a premium full set of British first editions of The Second World War, Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. As with so much of what Churchill wrote, The Second World War is not "history" in the strictly academic, objectivist sense, but rather Churchill's perspective on history. In his March 1948 introduction to the first volume, Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history... it is a contribution to history..." Nonetheless the compelling fact remains, as stated by Churchill himself, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office... I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Certainly The Second World War may be regarded as an intensely personal and inherently biased history. Nonetheless, Churchill's work remains seminal, iconic, and a vital part of the historical record. Richard Langworth calls the six-volume epic "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. Consequently, superior jacketed sets have become scarce. Here is such a set for collectors, fine first editions in near fine or better dust jackets. The coarse black cloth bindings are immaculate, tight, and square with nicely rounded spines, sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and almost no discernible wear. The contents are crisp and bright. We find no spotting whatsoever and no previous ownership marks of any kind. The red-stained top edges all retain strong color, uniform in appearance across the volumes. The fore edges remain bright and show no soiling. All six dust jackets are clean, unclipped and entirely complete, with no losses. We note only fractional wear at a few spine ends. All six dust jackets have been spared the typical pronounced spine toning and shelf appearance is excellent. The red subtitles are still clearly legible with only minor fading to a few. All six dust jackets are protected with removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this set may require additional postage.         The Second World War, full set of six British first editions

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1948. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Here is a superior full set of British first editions of The Second World War, Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. Consequently, superior jacketed sets have become scarce. This set is better than most, featuring near fine first printing volumes in very good or better dust jackets. The black cloth bindings remain tight and clean with bright spine gilt and sharp corners, with the sole exception of a bump to the Volume III lower front corner. The contents remain unusually clean. We find no previous ownership marks. The red stained top edges retain deep, unfaded color uniform across all six volumes. A trivial hint of spotting and soiling is confined to the fore edges. The dust jackets are complete with no losses and retain the original front flap prices. We note light wear to a few spine ends and hinges and a few small marks to the lower Volume III & IV spines. The jacket spines of the first four volumes show modest toning but the red subtitles remain legible. All six dust jackets are protected with removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A240.4(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A123(ba), Langworth p.264.

BEYOND THIS HORIZON (FLAT SIGNED TO TITLE PAGE)

FANTASY PRESS 1948 - Stated First Edition, First printing Stunning Near fine book with a Near fine dust jacket. Flat signed by Heinlein directly on the title page. (The trade issue of this title is rarely found signed by Heinlein other than the limited editions) Robert Heinlein signed very few books, other than his few limited editions. (Compare the rarity of his signature to others of his contemporaries such as Bradbury, Asimov or Clarke.) Thus all signed Heinlein books are considered extremely scarce. The book is in beautiful near fine condition with red cloth boards, and unfaded gilt titles to spine. The boards have sharp corners and No edgewear. The book has a tight and square binding. The end papers are clean with no inscriptions, no bookplates and no bookstore stamps. The internal pages are clean, bright, crisp and flat with No stains, No writing, No bent pages, No marks, No age toning and No foxing. Beautiful crisp, clean book appearing as unread. The book is flat signed by Robert Heinlein directly on the title page. Please see images. The original dust jacket has strong, vibrant colors with just a touch of edgewear to the spine tips, otherwise No edgewear, No chips, No stains, No rips and No foxing. The rear panel and inner flaps are still a clean white, and the spine title still maintains the strong red color to the title which is most unusual (the red title is often found faded to a pink tone). Slight rubbing to the jacket as typical for this title. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has a stated price of $3.00. The jacket is now placed in a new clear archival cover. Beautiful jacket presenting the book nicely on the shelf! Please see images. Beautiful scarce signed book which would make a nice addition for a Heinlein collector. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for other SciFi listings, including many others by Heinlein [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Second World War, Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. The six-volume epic has been called "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." The U.S. first edition is not only more scarce today than its British counterpart, but is also the true first edition. Churchill vexed his publishers with seemingly endless corrections and clarifications.  It is often said that the U.S. publisher, Houghton Mifflin, ran out of patience with Churchill first.  However, Churchill's Bibliographer Ronald Cohen attributes the precedence of the U.S. publication to less romantic reasons "legal and financial, and not at all editorial." Irrespective of the reason, the first U.S. volume, The Gathering Storm, was published June 1948, while the British first edition was not published until October 1948. The sixth and final U.S. first edition volume, Triumph and Tragedy, was published during Churchill's second and final Premiership in November 1953. A Book-of-the-Month Club (BOMC) edition was published virtually simultaneously with the U.S. first edition and is quite similar in appearance (often causing confusion for disappointed collectors who think they are buying first editions). Please note these are not the common BOMC look-alikes, but correct first trade editions in all respects: the dust jackets are unclipped and bear the correct, first printing $6.00 price. All top edges are stained dark yellow-orange. Title and copyright pages bear correct first printing indications. All volumes bear the distinctive red and yellow head and foot bands. There are no BOMC indentations on the rear covers. Note that the dust jackets for Volumes I & II are both the scarce first issue jackets, not the more common later issue jackets (with differences to the dust jacket flap text); most dealers do not recognize or distinguish between the two when offering sets. This set features very good or better volumes in very good dust jackets. The bindings remain clean and square with only light wear to extremities. The contents remain uniformly clean; we find no spotting or previous ownership marks. The topstain is distinct and uniform across all six volumes. The dust jackets all retain the original $6.00 front flap prices, confirming first printing. Shelf presentation is quite respectable, with all six jackets showing strong color, with only slight sunning to the red panels of Volumes II & III. All six jackets show modest wear, with occasional shallow chipping to extremities. All six dust jackets are protected with removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this large set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A240.1(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A123(aa), Langworth p.258.

Autograph letter signed "Luigi Dallpiccola" to the French-Romanian composer Marcel Mihalovici

2 pp. Large quarto. Dated Florence, May 4, 1948. In black ink on cream- colored paper. With original autograph envelope, ca. 127 x 156 mm., postmarked Florence, May 4, [19]48, with names and addresses of Mihalovici and Dallapiccola written to upper and lower panels respectively. In French (with translation). A intriguing letter, shedding light on how composers arranged performances of their works via a close network of like-minded musicians and patrons. Dallapiccola mentions several musicians (including composer Pierre Capdevielle) with ties to important public radio companies who could potentially secure broadcasts of Mihalovici's third string quartet (op. 52) and Dallapiccola's own Musica per tre pianoforti (1935) and Divertimento (1934). He has just completed the orchestral score for his opera, Le Prisonnier (Il prigioniero), which cost him considerable effort. "... Has your third quartet already appeared? If so, do you have the opportunity to show it to the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano (one of the most remarkable ensembles!), perhaps via Madame de Polignac? If this is not an option, do you want to send a copy to Mr. Mario Salerno... a very good musician (it was he who took care of the performance of your Sonata for violin and cello) and a very good colleague as well, [who] has some opportunities at Radio-Turin. Yesterday I finally completed the orchestral score for my new opera, Le Prisonnier... My best best wishes for Phèdre!... I have already written to Mr. Capdevielle to see if he can arrange a program for me at the Radiodiffusion française with, for example, my Musique pour 3 pianos and the Divertimento for voice and five instruments... " Creased at folds; minor loss to margins not affecting text. Envelope torn at lower edge; upper portion of upper panel away; edges slightly browned. . Dallapiccola, an Italian composer, pianist, and writer, was the principal pioneer of dodecaphany in Italy. "Il prigioniero, [his] second opera, was drafted during World War II, and is clearly a response to wartime events... The bulk of the opera concerns the Prisoner?'s solitary attempts to replace despair with hope, and the fluctuations of his moods are traced with remarkable subtlety in music of great passion and lyrical beauty. The music is based on three 12-note rows, each carrying a symbolic status: prayer, hope and freedom. Following the model of Berg, Dallapiccola uses these to construct a series of closed forms, most notably ricercares. He also incorporates extended extracts from his Canti di prigionia (1938?-41), his first piece of overt protest music, though the opera ends without the optimism of the earlier work." Anthony Sellors in Grove Music Online. The opera was first broadcast by the Italian radio station RAI on December 1, 1949, and premiered at the Teatro Comunale in Florence on May 20, 1950. "A prolific composer who tackled all styles and forms, [Mihalovici] was a strong advocate of neo-classicism and placed great emphasis on melody and counterpoint. His harmonic language ranged from chromaticism to serialism. The imaginative play of instrumental sounds and the constant rhythmic variation (often inspired by Romanian folk music) reveals Mihalovici as a composer who was contemporary in his outlook despite a rigorous, academic background." Viorei Cosma in Grove Music Online.

The letter is accomplished on the second page of a four page bifolium on which his wife, Martha Promise Ledbetter (1904-1968) Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages, 7"" x 7.5"", New York, December 29, 1948, also writes to Austin Fairbanks. Expected folds, very light toning at margins, else fine condition. He writes in full (with his idiosyncratic spellings preserved): ""Hello my Dear Friend How do you do merry xomass - Happy new year to you why Don you call me up sometime i would love to Here from you is so slow im Thinking That i will do a concert in washing ton at the nati[on]al Press Club seats 1500 Peoples there and roug[h] it I will Do the interductory and we will Do another one in Chicago Let me [kn]ow How you feel about it So Long H Ledbetter"" While we have been unable to determine if Ledbetter performed at the National Press Club in 1949, however there are extant photographs of him playing at the club housed at the Library of Congress taken by photographer William P. Gottlieb and dated c. 1938-1948. Martha's letter which appears on pages one and three of the folded sheet (with her idiosyncratic spellings preserved): ""Dear Auston How are you and how are you enjoying Xmas well I am Sure you had a lots of Snow for Xmas as we did Well We Sure would like to here from you and where you are and what you are doing for your self we are just Sitting around Nuthing to do and no place to go if you are in New York during the Halodays Drop in to See us You will all ways find us I call Mrs Malchan[?] and she had not Heard from you either So Long (Martha)"" Letters written by Huddie Ledbetter are prohibitively rare. Only one other letter not from this source from Ledbetter (unsigned) has appeared on the market, and was sold privately some years ago. The only other Ledbetter autographic material that has appeared for sale are a precious few signed programs and a photograph, and assessing authenticity on these items would be an issue. This letter has the unique combination of his beloved wife Martha, the first to be offered. The only other known body of correspondence from Ledbetter is part of the John A. Lomax and Alan Lomax Papers at the Library of Congress and contains only twelve letters (AFC 1933/001)."
