The Second World War: Six Leatherbound Volumes

Cassell & Company, Ltd.. Fine. 1948. 1st UK Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcovers. Complete 6-volume set of the preferred British edition, all six volumes are first printings and all are bound in genuine full-leather by Asprey & Co. LTD, color is black with bright gold spine-titles and gilded borders, five gilt-ruled raised spine-bands, all edges gilt, red and gray marbled end-papers, a fine set for the serious collector, we examined every page of this set and everything is present and in order, including all of the maps, it also includes the "Author's Note" which is tipped-in on the "Theme of the Volume" page following the Preface, for the most part this is a pristine set, we note a few minor flaws which do little to nothing to detract from this set's beauty: a few small scuff-marks to the gilt edges; the spines have a slightly different shade than the covers which is not very noticeable and does not detract at all from this set's appearance, a very small number of pages have a few mildly-tanned spots, most of this occurs in Volume 2 on the half-title page and in some of the margins .

The Second World War, full set of six British first editions

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1948. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Here is a full set of British first editions of The Second World War, Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. As with so much of what Churchill wrote, The Second World War is not "history" in the strictly academic, objectivist sense, but rather Churchill's perspective on history. In his March 1948 introduction to the first volume, Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history... it is a contribution to history..." Nonetheless the compelling fact remains, as stated by Churchill himself, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office... I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Certainly The Second World War may be regarded as an intensely personal and inherently biased history. Nonetheless, Churchill's work remains seminal, iconic, and a vital part of the historical record. Richard Langworth calls the six-volume epic "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. Consequently, superior jacketed sets have become scarce. This is such a set for collectors, near fine first editions in near fine or better dust jackets. The coarse black cloth bindings are immaculate, tight, and square with nicely rounded spines, sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and almost no discernible wear. We note only a single, tiny corner bump among the six volumes. The contents are uniformly clean. We find no previous ownership marks in the set. Spotting, modest for the edition, appears confined to the page edges. The red topstain remains strong across the set, with Volumes I & IV more pink than red but still quite respectable. All six dust jackets are clean, unclipped and entirely complete, with no losses. We note only fractional wear at a few spine ends. All six dust jackets have been spared the typical pronounced spine toning; the red subtitles remain vividly bright and shelf appearance is excellent. All six dust jackets are protected with removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this set may require additional postage.         Oeuvres de Louis Pergaud.

1948Paris, Mercure de France, 1948, in-12, broché, couverture rempliée, lettrage rouge et or, 4 volumes. Oeuvres complètes de Louis PERGAUD (1882-1915) ; vol. I. (De Goupil à Margot, II. La revanche du corbeau ; III. Le Miracle de Saint Hubert) ; vol. II. (IV.

        NAKED AND THE DEAD

New York: Rinehart and Co, 1948. First edition, first issue with Rinehart logo on copyright page, jacket without the Rinehart quote. 8vo, original black cloth printed in white on the spine, printed dustjacket with Mailer’s photograph on the rear panel. (8), 721 pp. Internally a very good and well preserved copy with only minor mellowing and some dusting to the page edges. The cloth good only with the spine panel loose from the front board but still whole and attached to the back, some wear to the board edges and corners, dustjacket in good order with very little wear or aging. NORMAN MAILER’S FIRST BOOK AND ARGUABLY STILL ONE OF HIS BEST. Long considered one of the best novels to come out of World War II, and the best to come out of America. It caused a sensation on its initial publication; critics compared the 25-year-old author to Tolstoy and catapulted him to instant literary celebrity. Mailer uses extensive flashbacks and brutally frank battle scenes to tell the story of General Cummings’ invasion of a Japanese-held island in the South Pacific. Believing that “the morality of the future is a power morality,” Cummings runs into opposition from Lieutenant Hearn, who refuses to fit into the general’s “fear ladder.”

Collection of Autograph Letters from Robbins to Kirstein

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Group of autograph letters from the great dancer/choreographer, Jerome Robbins to Lincoln Kirstein, the American writer, impresario, art connoisseur, and cultural figure in New York City who, with George Balanchine, founded the New York City Ballet (first known as the "Ballet Society") in 1948. Two postcards, three notecards on his stationery, a typed letter signed, and a photocopy of a magazine article with an autograph annotation at the head, various dates, all addressed to Lincoln Kirstein and signed "Jerry." An interesting record of the friendship between these two important cultural figures during the later years of both their lives. In fine condition overall.<br>A postcard from Vienna (n.d.) sends Kirstein the cheery message: "lots of Kultur, lots of Schlag, lots of deutsch, lots of love - Jerry." On another postcard with a drawing of a dancer by Toulouse-Lautrec, Robbins writes: "By the looks of this, it was never easy! [...] Thank you Lincoln for your last letter. As always you fire me up, and your enthusiasms for the Copeland [sic] give me a lot of steam. It also helped me get out of a terrible funk I'd been in since early June. It will be good to see you soon..." With the note, "Lincoln - maybe we're on the wrong track!", Robbins sends Kirstein a photocopy of an article on a modern Nutcracker, titled "Revolutionary Tidings" (December 18, 1987). A postcard from Paris (postmarked November 14, 1989) mentions that Robbins has read a piece on Kirstein by [John] Russell, and continues: "The 'organization' of the Opera has done a complete swing around since last week, turning from total obstruction to fawning attention: don't know if it's because of my leaving our company, [or] my blasting them in the press -- probably neither -- they just want another ballet."<br>A later typed letter (2 pp., December 28, 1994, with original envelope) thanks Kirstein for the gift of his book on Pavel Tchelitchev and describes his enjoyment of reading about the 1928 ballet Ode, whose scenery was designed by Tchelitchev: "I burrowed right in. It has been a long held fixation of mine, to delve into it and to try to fathom out, among other things, what that lineof diminishing dolls suspended over the heads of the dancers meant..." Two final notes on Robbins' letterhead notecards (May 9, 1995, and September 14, 1995, with original envelopes) send best wishes to Kirstein near the end of his life, and mentions his West Side Story Suite ballet ("W. S. S. S."): "If you don't want to come to the opening, I'll arrange a showing for you."<br><br>

Typed Letter Signed to Speaker of the House Joseph Martin and "an open letter to Premier Stalin"

Henry A. Wallace, New York 1948 - Typed Letter SIGNED on his personal stationery, dated May 17, 1948 - "Dear Mr. Martin, I am taking the liberty of sending you a copy of an open letter which I have addressed to Premier Stalin, outlining the basic principles and practical steps which I believe make possible a general settlement of outstanding differences between ourselves and the Russians by conference and peaceful negotiation." The next 2 paragraphs speak of Wallace's hopes for an end to the Cold War following the recent exchange between Ambassador Smith and Foreign Minister Molotov, and the tragedy that would result if the Administration rejects the Russians offer to negotiate. He finishes - " I am therefore addressing you and other members of Congress to ask that you urge the President to act in good faith upon Ambassador Smith's statement that "the door is always wide open" to Soviet-American discussions by accepting the Molotov proposal for a conference to settle outstanding differences. Only if that proposal is accepted, and our representatives sit down with the Russians to arrive at a peaceful understanding, can America regain the moral leadership in world affairs that alone can make peace possible. Sincerely yours, Henry A. Wallace Enclosure". Enclosed is the original 11" x 17" open letter, 3 folds, Near Fine, tiny corner crease. The typed letter also Near Fine, paper clip indent top edge. Henry A. Wallace was the 33rd Vice President of the United States (1941-45), the Secretary of Agriculture (1933-40), and the Secretary of Commerce (1945-46). He ran for President in 1948 as the Progressive Party candidate, finishing 4th behind Harry S. Truman, Thomas E. Dewey, and Strom Thurmond. Joseph W. Martin, Jr.(R) Mass. was Speaker of the House in 1948. By 1948 Wallace, who had been replaced by Truman as Roosevelt's Vice-President, had come to believe that the Cold War was Truman's fault. His open letter to Stalin was met with approval from the Russians, but his belief that communists and non-communists could work together, and his acceptance of Communist Party help in organizing his Progressive Party bid, at the height of the House Un-American Activities Committee, doomed his candidacy. An outstanding Cold War letter and archive of American history. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
