        Autograph letter signed ("George").

Barnhill, Isle of Jura, Argyllshire, 29 November 1947 - 4to. 3 pp. Printed letter-heading. To the novelist Anthony Powell ("Dear Tony"), giving a detailed account of his health, the treatment available and his hopes of securing a consignment to somewhere warm abroad for a couple of months, all of which has meant that he has done little work for weeks: "have only done the rough draft of my novel, which I always consider as the half-way mark. I was supposed to finish it by May – now, God knows when", and gives his opinion that "in these days besides putting the date of publication in books one also ought to put the date of writing" (".In the spring I'm reprinting a novel which came out in 1939 & was rather killed by the war, so that makes up a little for being late with my new one."), and congratulates Powell on the progress of his Aubrey book; the rest of the letter he devotes to the subject of saddles, hoping Powell can procure one for the farm pony, used for running errands to save petrol, as "it's so tiring riding bareback"; ending with the news that Richard is "offensively well & full of violence", having been through whooping cough without even noticing he had it, and by giving his love to everyone. In fine, fresh condition. - The other novel which he describes as having been "rather killed by the war" is Coming Up for Air, which had been published on 12 June 1939 and which, in fact, sold well and was almost immediately reprinted. The second edition to which this letter refers came out on 13 May 1948, constituting the first volume in the Universal Edition of Orwell's works; the proofs of which Orwell received on 7 October and returned on 22 October 1947. Powell published John Aubrey and His Friends in 1948, and Brief Lives and Other Selected Writings of John Aubrey in 1949. This letter is included in the selected edition, George Orwell: A Life in Letters.

        HET ACHTERHUIS. DAGBOEKBRIEVEN 12 JUNI 1942 - 1 AUGUSTUS 1944

Uitgeverij Contact, Amsterdam. 1947.. Hardcover. Original publisher?'s boards, with the exceedingly rare dust jacket, 12mo, ix 252 pages. First Edition of The Diary of a Young Girl, a book which continues to hold its place at the top of many literary lists: the most famous diary of modern times, the most famous work by a teenager, most famous work on the Holocaust, most famous 20th Century work by a Jew. Primo Levi suggested that Anne Frank is frequently identified as a single representative of the millions of people who suffered and died as she did because "One single Anne Frank moves us more than the countless others who suffered just as she did but whose faces have remained in the shadows. Perhaps it is better that way; if we were capable of taking in all the suffering of all those people, we would not be able to live. " Otto Frank, Anne?'s father spent the remainder of his life after publication of the Diary as custodian of his daughter's legacy, saying, "It's a strange role. In the normal family relationship, it is the child of the famous parent who has the honor and the burden of continuing the task. In my case the role is reversed. " He recalled his publisher's explaining why he thought the diary has been so widely read, with the comment, "he said that the diary encompasses so many areas of life that each reader can find something that moves him personally. " Simon Wiesenthal expressed a similar sentiment when he said that the diary had raised more widespread awareness of the Holocaust than had been achieved during the Nuremberg Trials, because "people identified with this child. This was the impact of the Holocaust, this was a family like my family, like your family and so you could understand this" (Wikipedia, 2012) . Very Good Condition in an attractive Good Condition dust jacket with a quarter size chip at base of spine from the second printing, also from 1947. 1st edition dust jackets are essentially never seen (we have seen one offered for sale in the last 20 years); 2nd printing jackets from dec 1947, which this is, are also extremely rare. An attractive copy of this monumental and rare work, much nicer than usually seen. (kh-2-4) .

        Typed letter signed

1947. Signed. TRUMAN, Harry.Typed letter signed.Washington, D.C.: White House, August 5, 1947.August 5, 1947 typed letter signed by President Truman on official White House letterhead to Adele I. Springer, President of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), alongside a photogravure of Truman pictured as he holds up the famously mistaken newspaper with its headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman," together handsomely matted and framed. This August 5, 1947 typed letter on official White House letterhead is signed by Truman, who rose to the presidency after the death of FDR in 1945. Truman's letter to Adele Springer, President of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), reads: "August 5, 1947. My dear Miss Springer: I am pleased to extend greetings to the National Association of Women Lawyers on the occasion of its annual meeting. The increasing influence of women—particularly professional women—in our national affairs is, indeed, reassuring. 'To secure justice for all' is among your high and worthy aims. Your Association is well-equipped to furnish leadership to accomplish this noble objective—not only leadership in the legal professions, but in other fields of American life and human endeavor. Your discussions, I know, will emphasize the need for all to understand the many complex problems that confront us, to participate fully in civic affairs, and to contribute to a better appreciation of the worth and meaning of American citizenship and the needs of our Nation. Your interest in the aims and purposes of the United Nations is most gratifying. May this interest in the work of that great world organization continue, so that you may be an effective instrument in helping to enlighten and mold the opinions of our people in international affairs. In ever increasing measure, we must have leaders of intelligence and good will if our Nation is to fulfill its obligations to the cause of peace. Very sincerely yours, [signed] Harry Truman [typescript] Miss Adele I. Springer, President, National Association of Women Lawyers, 60 Wall Street, New York 5, N.Y." The letter is matted with a black-and-white photogravure of Truman grinning as he raises high the Chicago Daily Tribune with its mistaken headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman." Truman won the 1948 election by defeating Dewey in what is widely considered America's greatest election upset.Springer, who opened her Wall Street law firm in 1938, was NAWL President from 1946-47, a year in which she also represented the NAWL at the State Department Conference on Foreign Policy. In addition, after a survey found less than 50 women on the bench, Springer and the NAWL sent resolutions to President Truman, the U.S. Attorney General and state governors, calling for the appointment of more qualified women to the bench and public office. In his letter Truman's particular reference to the association between the NAWL and the United Nations comes not long after the NAWL was accredited by the State Department as an official observer at the U.N. The NAWL's goal of building "bridges of cooperation beyond the borders of the U.S. is also found in the action of Springer, who enrolled NAWL as a member of the new International Bar Association at its 1947 charter meeting in New York" (Smith, Century of Achievement, 8). A fine framed signed letter and photogravure.

ADMIRAL HALSEY'S STORY (Inscribed By Halsey)

New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1947. A great inscription which adds considerably to the value of the signature. A significant WWII related collectible. The inscription on the half title page below title reads, "To Alan Charles Sanford -- A gallant sailor on the U.S.S. Ward at the time of the treacherous attack on Pearl Harbor. 7 Dec. 1941. W.F. Halsey." Halsy gained fame for his bold leadership of the U.S. Third Fleet in the Pacific during WWII. Halsey had many great sea victories to his credit including the naval battle of Guadalcanal, and he is prominently pictured standing next to Gen. MacArthur in the famous photo of the surrender of the Japanese aboard the U.S.S. Missouri (his flagship). That he refers to the beginning of the war against Japan in this inscription is especially important. The USS Ward he refers to was a battleship at Pearl Harbor that sank a Japanese submarine near Pearl two hours before the attack from the air began. This inscription is in a very decent copy of the book. Just a bit of light wear to the cloth keeps the book from an even better grade. The inscription in dark blue ink is bold and pleasing. . INSCRIBED/SIGNED BY ADMIRAL HALSEY. First Edition. Blue Cloth. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Octavo, 310pp.

Alexis Zorba ou le Rivage de Crete (Zorba The Greek).

Editions Du Chene, Paris 1947 - First French edition of Zorba the Greek, published one year after the first Greek edition and six years prior to the first English translation. Octavo, original wrappers. In very good condition. Kazantzakis traveled to Paris frequently throughout his life and spoke French fluently. From 1902 Kazantzakis studied law at the University of Athens, then went to Paris in 1907 to study philosophy. Here he fell under the influence of Henri Bergson. His 1909 dissertation was titled "Friedrich Nietzsche on the Philosophy of Right and the State." Zorba the Greek is the epic tale of a young Greek intellectual who ventures to escape his bookish life with the aid of the boisterous and mysterious Alexis Zorba. Kazantzakis has made a work of stunning genius. The book is about life. How does one live it? How does one deal with the vicissitudes of it? The tragedies? The failures? Does one stand on the sidelines of life and never jump in? Does one fear getting married or fear having children or fear doing any activity that could fail or come to naught? Zorba tells us what to do. And in the end, when the whole bloody mess comes falling down around us, and all our plans and schemes are for naught, what do you do? Dance. Dance as hard and as wild as you can. Spit and fume and sing and smash your heels into the dirt. And laugh at it all. the absurdity of worry and wondering. Zorba shows us the joy of just "being" and "doing". The novel was adapted into a successful 1964 film of the same name as well as a 1968 musical, Zorba. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
