        [Original Manuscript]: Gillian Benedict

[Circa 1947]. Two drafts of the original typed manuscript. First draft: 348pp. Final draft: 334pp. The first draft is heavily corrected, both copy edited, and edited for content, presumably by the author; the second draft is clean and with only minor corrections in pencil, although it still retains the author's original title Gillian Benedict. Housed in folders and worn Bobbs-Merrill manila envelopes, the pages are near fine. A romance novel about a woman living in London, desperately battling alcoholism, and spanning the time between the two World Wars. Wadelton was an Irish woman who moved to the U.S. at age twelve, and published at least four books, including at least two that were autobiographical, The Book of Maggie Owen (1941) and Maggie No Doubt (1943); the Gothic ghost story Sarah Mandrake (1946); and Gay, Wild and Free (1949), which seems to be an autobiographical novel, all of them published by Bobbs-Merrill. One of the envelopes bears a pencil notation Gay, Wild and Free, but a comparison with the text of that novel indicates this is an entirely different work. It may be unpublished. In any event a little known novel by a published woman writer. .

Field Guide of Birds of the West Indies.

New York, NY: Macmillan, 1947.. FIRST MACMILLAN PRINTING. Octavo, pp.xii; 257; [1], blank. With colour plate illustrations and line drawings by Poole. Publisher's brown cloth titled in black to spine and front board, map endpapers, original dust-jacket. Book is very good aside from a bookplate affixed to the verso of the half title page, which has caused some crinkling; jacket a little soiled and torn, price-clipped to foot but showing $3.75 to top of flap. A very good copy. The acclaimed work by the ornithologist James Bond, whose name was famously appropriated for spy fiction's most celebrated hero. The original edition was published by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, in a different format. This eye-catching edition 'has been completely rewritten in a popular style', and is certainly the printing which influenced Fleming; when writing his debut novel in 1952, this version of the book was on his shelf and not the obscure original work; Fleming had purchased land and built a Jamaican home in 1945 and, according to Ben McIntyre, (and re-affirmed by Fleming throughout his life), while pondering his character Fleming 'simply lifted the name from his bookshelves, his eye having alighted upon 'Field Guide to [sic] the Birds of the West Indies' by James Bond, the standard reference book published by MacMillan in 1947'. Due to the connection, the availability of this book has simply dried up in recent years- whilst reprints may be obtained, this 1947 first edition is rather scarce, with no copy appearing in book searches at the time of writing.

        A Collection of E J Oxenham Novels

1966 - London - Collins 1947 - A collection of twenty-five novels by Elsie Jeanette DunkerleyElsie Jeanette Dunkerley (25 November 1880 - 9 January 1960), was an English girls' story writer, who took the name Oxenham as her pseudonym when her first book, Goblin Island, was published in 1907. Her Abbey Series of 38 titles are her best-known and best-loved books. In her lifetime she had 87 titles published and another two have since been published by her niece, who discovered the manuscripts in the early 1990s. She is considered a major figure among girls' story writers of the first half of the twentieth century, being one of the 'Big Three' with Elinor Brent-Dyer and Dorita Fairlie Bruce. Angela Brazil is as well-known - perhaps more so - but did not write her books in series about the same group of characters or set in the same place or school, as did the Big Three.         Typed letter signed

1947 - TRUMAN, Harry. Typed letter signed. Washington, D.C.: White House, August 5, 1947. Original letterhead leaf (8 by 10-1/2 inches) typescript on the recto, matted with photogravure (5 by 7 inches), framed (total 14-1/2 by 19 inches). $2100.August 5, 1947 typed letter signed by President Truman on official White House letterhead to Adele I. Springer, President of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), alongside a photogravure of Truman pictured as he holds up the famously mistaken newspaper with its headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman," together handsomely matted and framed. This August 5, 1947 typed letter on official White House letterhead is signed by Truman, who rose to the presidency after the death of FDR in 1945. Truman's letter to Adele Springer, President of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), reads: "August 5, 1947. My dear Miss Springer: I am pleased to extend greetings to the National Association of Women Lawyers on the occasion of its annual meeting. The increasing influence of women""particularly professional women""in our national affairs is, indeed, reassuring. 'To secure justice for all' is among your high and worthy aims. Your Association is well-equipped to furnish leadership to accomplish this noble objective""not only leadership in the legal professions, but in other fields of American life and human endeavor. Your discussions, I know, will emphasize the need for all to understand the many complex problems that confront us, to participate fully in civic affairs, and to contribute to a better appreciation of the worth and meaning of American citizenship and the needs of our Nation. Your interest in the aims and purposes of the United Nations is most gratifying. May this interest in the work of that great world organization continue, so that you may be an effective instrument in helping to enlighten and mold the opinions of our people in international affairs. In ever increasing measure, we must have leaders of intelligence and good will if our Nation is to fulfill its obligations to the cause of peace. Very sincerely yours, [signed] Harry Truman [typescript] Miss Adele I. Springer, President, National Association of Women Lawyers, 60 Wall Street, New York 5, N.Y." The letter is matted with a black-and-white photogravure of Truman grinning as he raises high the Chicago Daily Tribune with its mistaken headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman." Truman won the 1948 election by defeating Dewey in what is widely considered America's greatest election upset.Springer, who opened her Wall Street law firm in 1938, was NAWL President from 1946-47, a year in which she also represented the NAWL at the State Department Conference on Foreign Policy. In addition, after a survey found less than 50 women on the bench, Springer and the NAWL sent resolutions to President Truman, the U.S. Attorney General and state governors, calling for the appointment of more qualified women to the bench and public office. In his letter Truman's particular reference to the association between the NAWL and the United Nations comes not long after the NAWL was accredited by the State Department as an official observer at the U.N. The NAWL's goal of building "bridges of cooperation beyond the borders of the U.S. is also found in the action of Springer, who enrolled NAWL as a member of the new International Bar Association at its 1947 charter meeting in New York" (Smith, Century of Achievement, 8). A fine framed signed letter and photogravure. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
