        Soviet Russia Since the War

1947 - (CHAPLIN, Charlie) JOHNSON, Hewlett (Dean of Canterbury). Soviet Russia Since the War. New York: Boni & Gaer, 1947. Octavo, original taupe cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.First edition of Soviet Russia Since the War, inscribed "To """" from Hewlett Johnson / Dean of Canterb. / Los Angeles / Dec "" 49" and signed immediately below the inscription, "Charles Chaplin."Dean of Canterbury from 1931 to 1963, Hewlett Johnson's steadfast championing of Communism, which he considered the best alternative to Fascism, brought him under the surveillance of MI5 and eventually earned him the nickname "The 'Red' Dean of Canterbury." By 1947, Johnson was already well-traveled, having served as chaplain in a camp for German POWs in World War I, visited China in 1932, and gone to Spain in 1937 during the Civil War. In 1945 he was in Moscow during the V.E. Day celebrations and in June of that year met Stalin at the Kremlin where he was awarded the "Order of the Red Banner of Labour." He had written his first book, The Socialist Sixth of the World (1939), at the urging of publisher Victor Gollanz, who asked him to explain Russian Communism to the British public.Charlie Chaplin did not call himself a communist, but rather a "peacemonger." He is known to have attended functions given by Soviet diplomats in Los Angeles, and the FBI maintained a file on him. Though he publicly protested Senator McCarthy's actions against suspected Communist Party members and was subpoenaed to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, he was never called to testify. Chaplin and Johnson apparently met no later than November of 1945 when both attended a talk by Linus Pauling on "Atomic Energy and World Government" for the Hollywood chapter of the Independent Citizen's Committee for the Arts, Sciences, and Professions. In My Autobiography (1964), Chaplin wrote: "There is a strong sense of frankness and sincerity about the English clergy that is a reflection of England at its best. It is men like Dr. Hewlett Johnson". that give vitality to the English Church." Book fine, some chipping to edges and spine of extremely good dust jacket.         Kriath Kodesh [call to Yeshiva students]

1947 - (JUDAICA""ZIONISM). Kriath Kodesh [Call to Yeshiva Students]. (Jerusalem): Kislev, 1947-48. Broadside (measures 10 by 13-1/2 inches), printed on recto. $1800.1947 Jerusalem Orthodox broadside against "the Zionists who wish to uproot the Torah," illustrative of the conflicts among Zionists and other factions in Jerusalem just prior to the creation of the state of Israel. This broadside states that it is the scholars of Torah who are the Neturei Karta, "the protectors of the city." "The forces which were contending over the nature of the new society were divided into three broad groups". Socialist Zionists, known as the Histadrut". middle-class elements [anti-Socialist Revisionists]". and the Orthodox, who could not imagine a Jewish presence in the land which did not exemplify the values and practices of the religious tradition" (Encyclopaedia Judaica). These three factions came to maturity as the Zionist settlement in Palestine increased tenfold, from roughly 60,000 in 1919 to 600,000 in the 1940s. This broadside goes on to claim, "Whomever has any relationship with the Zionists-even enlisting in the Haganah-becomes a partner in actions against Judaism." "[Orthodox elements] were dedicated to the building of an institutional power base for religious Jews, so that they could compete as equals with the other groups and provide equal opportunity in the new country for those who shared the Orthodox religious faith. This body of opinion was deeply concerned that the total temper of the Jewish community should not be secularized. They did not want to become a religious ghetto in a non-religious Jewish society, and they believed that it was their duty to bring religion even to those who opposed it". The struggle between the Socialist and the middle-class elements in Israel's society has been muted in the generation of statehood, for a mixed economy now prevails. The conflict over religion and its relationship to public life has, if anything, become sharper within the sovereign parliamentary life of the Jewish state" (Encyclopaedia Judaica). Text in Hebrew. Faint fold lines. Fine condition. Scarce.

        Scott-King's Modern Europe

Chapman & Hall, 1947 - First edition; 8vo; original cloth and John Piper designed dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "from Evelyn Waugh March 1947." Bookplate of historian Hugh Trevor-Roper to the front pastedown. It is interesting that this copy belonged to Trevor-Roper as Waugh disliked him intensely, referring to him variously as "that blackguard" and "the demon don". In a letter of 1950 Waugh described his writing as 'vulgar'. Their most famous public spat was in the pages of the New Statesman in 1954 over relatively obscure points concerning the history of the Roman Catholic church in England. Waugh thought the appointment of Trevor- Roper as Regius Professor at Oxford as an insult to English Catholics. Waugh does not name the recipient of the inscription (he normally did), and it is interesting to speculate as to whether Waugh presented a copy of this work to a figure for whom he held a strong dislike. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with minor creasing to foot, lower panel and flaps a little spotted. A superb copy of this title with an interesting association.         TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

The Macmillan Company, New York 1947 - Michener's first book and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy with a very early INSCRIPTION dated 27 May 1947 SIGNED by the author: "Dear Jim,/The first serious writing I/did came your way. This one/had a better fortune, thanks to the/passing of time and some millions of/acres of the Pacific. It's been a treat knowing you./Jim Michener." We can only speculate who Jim was, but obviously he was of some importance to Michener very early in his career. Housed in a handsome and recent navy blue half morocco clamshell box. The brittleness of the cheap paper, found in every copy we have seen, is much in evidence with a very short tear at the top margin running through nearly every page of the book. The covers also have short tears near the spine at the top and bottom. The upper front corner is bumped, and a darker shade at the very head of the spine indicates that a dustwrapper was present on this book for quite some time. All that is left is the rear flap which is laid in. Good copy only, but a great, early inscription and housed in a Fine box [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Zanuck, with his holograph pencil initials on the front wrapper and holograph pencil edits and changes throughout. Also included are two color tinted studio photographs from the film.         Jail-Bird Jottings: The Impressions of a Singapore Internee

(Kuala Lumpur, Malaya: The Economy Printers. 1947). First. First (and only) edition. Small square quarto. 84pp., illustrated throughout with reproductions of the author's watercolors (in both black and white, and in color) painted while interned at the Changi prisoner of war camp. Illustrated stiff paper wrappers. Ownership signature of Phyliss White dated in 1948, small tears and some small stains or foxing on the wrappers, a sound, very good copy. Complimentary slip laid in with the letterhead of Malaya House in London.London-born Iris Parfitt was a teacher at the St. George School in Penang at the time Malaya fell to the Japanese (after the War she served for a time as the school's Principal). During the occupation she was an internee at both the Changi and Sime Road Camps. In Changi she was the chairperson of the camp's Entertainment Committee, and "played a key role in staging all kinds of entertainment in the camp. Capitalizing on the variety of ages, races, and nationalities, professions and social backgrounds of the internees she put on magnificent entertainments, that were remembered as a great source of encouragement, joviality and humor." (Michiko Nakahara. "The Civilian Women's Internment Camp in Singapore" in New Perspectives on the Japanese Occupation of Malaya and Singapore 2008). Parfitt's memoir provides one of the the most important eyewitness accounts of daily life in the infamous Japanese internment camps. Her watercolors and sketches, with their accompanying explanatory notes contain an enormous amount of highly detailed observation, and range in tone from the satirical to deeply poignant. Rare. OCLC locates six copies in the U.S. .
