Signed Photograph as Joan of Arc, inscribed during production to special effects assistant

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Vintage doubleweight glossy 8 x 10 inch photo of Bergman in her iconic role as Joan of Arc, signed and inscribed in blue ink in the year before the film's release to a member of the special effects team: "To Milton - Ingrid Bergman / 1947." The photograph by Bud Graybill of Bergman is surrounded by a printed frame signed within the image by most of the cast and crew of the film and inscribed by Bergman to the film's adviser, Pere Paul Doncoeur. After having gone through the trouble of obtaining this remarkable set of signatures, offprints such as this of the whole ensemble were produced for Bergman to sign and inscribe individually to those involved in the production. The present photograph, inscribed to Milton, is sold together with a vintage doubleweight photograph of a group of men standing around a table laden with sticks, tubes protruding, and seemingly ablaze with fire, this evidently being the effects crew with their creation of the burning stake/pyre from the film. The photograph with a gift sticker affixed to the verso reading "Glogg to you from the Joan of Arc company / Christmas, 1947," and inscribed in pencil "Dec. 18, 1947 / Hal Roach Effects Crew / Milton 2nd on Right of the fire." <br><br><br />Filming was done primarily at Hal Roach Studios, with location scenes shot in the Los Angeles area. The movie was first released in November 1948 by RKO. <br><br><br />Bergman won three Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and the Tony Award for Best Actress in the first Tony Award ceremony in 1947. She is ranked as the fourth greatest female star of American cinema of all time by the American Film Institute.

In Changi she was the chairperson of the camp's Entertainment Committee, and "played a key role in staging all kinds of entertainment in the camp. Parfitt's memoir provides one of the the most important eyewitness accounts of daily life in the infamous Japanese internment camps. Her watercolors and sketches, with their accompanying explanatory notes contain an enormous amount of highly detailed observation, and range in tone from the satirical to deeply poignant. Rare. Out of poetic imagination and ordinary compassion he has spun a poignant and luminous story." (Contemporary New York Times review). about Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

Black Narcissus (Complete set of British front-of-house cards for the 1947 film)

The Archers, London 1947 - Complete set of 8 UK color front-of-house cards from the first-run screening of the 1947 film. Each with the contemporary rubber stamp of Girosign, Ltd., on the verso. Front-of-house cards served the same purpose in the UK as lobby cards in the US, but were generally only produced for films shot in color. A very popular format, used in the UK starting in the 1920s and running well into the 1980s. They are distinctive in that their color separation is much finer and the colors more vibrant than what is found in US lobby cards from the same period, and they are produced on a thinner stock.A stone classic from the Powell-Pressburger canon, based on the 1939 novel by Rumer Godden. A visually stunning melodrama, one of the great duo's masterpieces, about the spirtual and melodramatic goings-on at a convent in the Himalayas. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine.

        Certificate of recognition, signed

1947 - MACARTHUR, Douglas. Certificate of recognition, signed. No place, no date. -Original official chromolithographic document with original paper seal, measuring /11-1/2 by 17 inches, matted together with Time magazine cover; entire piece by measures 29-1/2 by 24 inches. $3000.Original official certificate of recognition for the service of PFC Fred Alexander as member of the elite honor guard to Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan, signed by MacArthur and matted beneath the Life magazine cover for September 17, 1945 bearing a portrait of MacArthur captioned "Commander of Japan."&#157;"On the morning of September 8, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur made his way by automobile toward the American Embassy in the heart of Tokyo. One American observer described it as a city "&#152;completely flat with destruction,' where even "&#152;the rubble did not look like much.' As he presided over a ceremony at the Embassy""his home for the next five and a half years""MacArthur ordered General Eichelberger to "&#152;have our country's flag unfurled, and in Tokyo's sun let it wave in its full glory as a symbol of hope for the oppressed and as a harbinger of victory for the right.' This moment was not broadcast throughout the world as the surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri had been six days earlier. Yet in hindsight, it was just as symbolic of the occupation period to follow: optimistic, thoroughly American, and unmistakably MacArthur"&#157; (PBS). Life magazine's September 17, 1945 cover portrait of Douglas MacArthur appeared shortly after he took command of the Japanese occupation. The accompanying certificate, signed by both Captain Warren B. Hodges, Company Commander and General MacArthur, recognizes the service of PFC Fred Alexander as a member of MacArthur's personal Honor Guard. "The General Order establishing the Honor Guard to the Commander in Chief stipulates that members of the Company must have outstanding physique, must be persons of high intelligence with exceptional moral standards and perfect service records."&#157; Minor closed tears and creasing to left margin of certificate, just touching text and signature. A splendid military piece. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Trial Sheets for Poems

Black Mountain, NC: Black Mountain Print Shop, 1947. Loose leaves, letterpress printed in Futura on various types and dimensions of paper. Provenance: from Serendipity Books, with research notes and correspondence by Peter Howard laid in. Mary Caroline Richards, a graduate of Reed College in Portland, Oregon, joined the Black Mountain College Faculty in 1945, and was an important member of the faculty during its heyday, until she moved to Greenwich Village in the early 1950's with David Tudor. She later helped form the commune known as The Land, where she became an innovator in ceramics - the work for which she is best known - and developed theories that would inform her landmark 1964 book Centering in Pottery, Poetry and the Person. We believe these to be trial sheets for M. C. Richard's first book, Poems, which was handset and printed by the author in an edition of 50 copies in 1947 at Black Mountain - one of the earliest, and rarest Black Mountain College Print Shop publications. Most of the leaves (40) are printed on different colors of colored paper stock, similar to construction paper, all printed on the recto only, with duplicate sheets, some on different colors of paper, and in one case typeset differently. There is also 9 x 7" sheet printed on onionskin paper on recto only, perhaps in similar format to that of the finished, bound book, which was approximately 9" tall. Finally, there are also three folded sheets, 5 1/2" tall, which are printed on both recto and verso on watermarked paper and folded once into booklet form. This section prints six poems, only two of which are present in Poems; of the remaining four poems, we find two that are included in Imagine Inventing Yellow: New and Selected Poems (1991), but with different line breaks. The remaining two poems are not included in Imagine Inventing Yellow. All of the text of the finished book is represented, but some of the sheets differ - for example, one sheet prints the same couplet twice on the same sheet, while another prints it once. Given the variance of the sheets and the inclusion of poems which aren't present in the text of the published book, we believe these to be trial sheets rather than proof sheets, perhaps made as Richards was testing out the appearance and look of the pages, and deciding what poems to include in the final version. The sheets are accompanied by faxes, notes and correspondence between Peter Howard of Serendipity Books and others, collating the sheets and attempting to find out what these sheets are. Howard states that he believes them to be proof sheets or a different format. Peter's correspondence also notes also state that one page of the finished book is not present here, which begins with "walking over pulverized mariners. . . " (which Howard refers to as p. 16), but the text is present - because of the larger sheet size found here, that section of the text is present at the foot of the previous leaf. An artifact that illuminates the artistic process of the search for form and exemplifies the experimental approach of Black Mountain College at the time. OCLC locates three holdings, two in 8vo format, and a third, at Stanford, printed on 8 1/2 x 11" sheets such as the majority of these sheets. Sheets slightly brittle, with a couple of wormholes to the margin of several sheets, else very good.
