        Dangling Man [Signed]

London: John Lehmann, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Impression ("First published in England 1946"). Small, slim 8vo: 191,[1]pp. Publisher's finely woven sunflower cloth, spine stamped in brown, in the superb pictorial pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped). Signed by Bellow on front fly leaf. Fine, tight (probably unread) and bright in close to Fine jacket with touch of usual darkening to spine and back panels but front panel still vivid. First book, a slim, quiet masterpiece, from the Nobel prizewinning author of Herzog, Augie March and Henderson the Rain King. Joseph, the novel's protagonist, "is a would-be writer and intellectual caught waiting for the Draft, who romantically believes that intellectual and spiritual enlightenment is to be attained by isolating himself within the confines of a room in a cheap Chicago boarding house while he studies the great writers of the Enlightenment. It also reflects the 1940s preoccupation of American intellectuals with French existentialism and themes of individual freedom, the meaning of moral responsibility, death, and social contract. . . . [In it is] much of Bellow's early life as a young newly-wed intellectual, immersed in literature of all kinds, poor and ambitious, isolated in his in-laws' Ravenswood apartment writing his first novel on a card table in the back room. It is also the lament of a young American artist who does not know how to join the mainstream of Chicagoan or American life without losing the spiritual value of his isolation. Critics hailed Dangling Man as an important novel written with style and genuine mastery." (Literary Encyclopedia) Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors's works. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

The Snow Goose. A Story of Dunkirk.

London Michael Joseph 1946 - Limited edition number 369 of 570 copies signed by author and artist, Peter Scott, slim 4to., four tipped-in colour plates, further monochrome illustrations, head-pieces and vignettes within text, all by Scott, publisher's cloth boards, gilt goose to upper board, top edge gilt and others untrimmed, plain paper dust-jacket, dust-soiled, chipped at extremities and darkened but still doing its job, otherwise and excellent copy. First published in 1940 a short story in a local newspaper, The Snow Goose was then expanded to a novella and republished in 1942. The story is a simple parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war. The hunchback, Philip Rhayader lives alone in an abandoned lighthouse on a desolate Essex marsh. One day a beautiful child, Fritha appears with an injured snow goose. The girl is initially wary of Rhayader but he is gentle and kind and Fritha begins to visit regularly. The snow goose recovers and flies home but returns every winter, as does Fritha until 1940 when Rhayader sets sail for Dunkirk to help the soldiers trapped on the beaches. Fritha never sees Rhayader again but the story of the saviour with the snow goose passes from soldier to soldier and into legend. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Portrait photograph of Phillippa Schuyler with her mother Josephine Schuyler

New York, 1946. Profile view of the girl seated at the piano, her mother standing behind with her hand resting on her daughter's shoulder. 1 vols. 25. x 20 cm. (approximately 9-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches). Fine. Docketed in pencil on verso, giving the name of the sitter, and a reference to negative and print ("IX - cc - 3"). Matted. Profile view of the girl seated at the piano, her mother standing behind with her hand resting on her daughter's shoulder. 1 vols. 25. x 20 cm. (approximately 9-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches). Inscribed by her Mom. Phillipa Duke Schuyler, "the baby genius of the Harlem Renaissance," was a musical prodigy who ... By the time she was four years old, ... was a skilled pianist; by five she was performing Mozart before audiences in concert halls. When she was six, she was touring to perform her own compositions; in 1940, at the age of eight, she performed for thousands of visitors at the New York World's Fair. She was ten when she became the youngest member of the National Association of American Composers and Conductors. To satisfy popular interest, magazines and newspapers including the New Yorker, Time Magazine, and the New York Times, included lengthy features outlining her achievements. "Schuyler's parents, too, were well-known figures in the Harlem Renaissance. Her father, George Schuyler, was a prominent and controversial African-American journalist. Her mother, Josephine Cogdell, a white woman, was a painter and writer. Both believed strongly in the theory of hybrid vigor and felt that children produced by interracial unions would inherit the strengths of both races and that ultimately mixed-race Americans would resolve the country's racial tensions. Schuyler's parents dedicated themselves to her success: Josephine Cogdell coached her daughter, pushed her to work hard, and acted as her agent; George Schuyler promoted Philippa Duke Schuyler in his newspaper columns and actively sought recognition for her successes in the white press. In an effort to keep her from becoming self-conscious, Schuyler's parents didn't allow her to see any of the considerable media attention she received. Nevertheless, both parents promoted Schuyler as an interracial role model and as proof of the theory of hybrid vigor. " - EXTRAVAGANT CROWD Incribed by Josephine, Phillips's mother: "to Saul [Saul Mauriber, Van Vechten's assistant], with many good wishes and much gratitude Josephine Schuyler" From the Estate of Saul Mauriber, Van Vechten's assistant, and the editor/compiler of PORTRAITS: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF CARL VAN VECHTEN (1978); EXTRAVAGANT CROWD: Carl Van Vechten's Portraits of Women (Beinecke Library, Exhibition Catalogue, 2003)

Het Beest is Dood - de Wereldoorlog bij de dieren

      S. Gouda Quint D Brouwer en Zoon Uitgewers, Arnhem / A B G E Uitgewers, Brussel 1946 - 79 pages complete. RARE Dutch translation of the French original, "La bete est morte!". Two parts in one volume: "Het Beest is Losgebroken" and "Het Beest is Verslagen". The story of World War Two set in an animal world. This is Calvo's most famous work. It earned him such esteem that he was invited to work for Walt Disney. He declined. It was published in France before the end of the war, but after the Occupation. This Dutch version was published in 1946 when wartime memories had yet to have the salve of time. A strong, vivid, colourful copy. The board cover is firm, sound with much wear and handling and storage marking. The edges and corners are much worn. The covers are very scuffed and marked by storage and shelving. The cloth spine is fit and healthy. Inside, the guttering along the frontispage is open but the security of the book is not affected. Taking the time of its publication and its eager readership into account the contents are in robust and vivid repair. The pages are clear, vibrant, expressive, memorable and bold. There is a cheeky 'version' of Marie France with a rabbit's head, breasts free, carrying a rifle with fixed bayonet! A delicious satire that still engrosses and thrills. fk [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Angry Penguins Broadsheet : a complete set of ten issues

Editors: Max Harris, nos. 1-10; James McGuire, nos. 1-9; Sidney Nolan, nos. 2-9; Harry Roskolenko, no. 10. [Melbourne : Reed & Harris, 1946]. Ten issues, no. 1 (Jan. 1946) - no. 10 (Dec. 1946), large octavo, staple-bound, pictorial wrappers, illustrated; a very good complete set. The Angry Penguins Broadsheet was an offshoot of Max Harris' modernist magazine, Angry Penguins, which had been founded in Adelaide in 1940 by Harris and the gifted young poet D.B. Kerr. The Broadsheet, along with the later issues of the magazine itself, was published in Melbourne by the small-press firm of Reed & Harris, run by art patrons John and Sunday Reed together with Max Harris. This publishing house was ideologically committed to printing books in the fields of literature, art, politics and social commentary whose ideas might not otherwise have found a voice. With its little magazine, the Broadsheet, it attempted to directly challenge and shock the bastions of conservative culture in Australia. The first issue of the Broadsheet included an essay of international significance by the controversial American writer Henry Miller, Obscenity and the Law of Reflection. At the time it appeared, in January 1946, Miller's novels were banned not only in the United States but also in Britain and Australia (Reed & Harris subsequently published Miller's Murder the Murderer : an Excursus on War from the 'Air-Conditioned Nightmare'). Issue no.3 contains the provocatively titled essays Governor Latrobe's Underpants : a colonial melodrama and Sex life of booksellers; no.4 contains a satirical poem about James McAuley (who along with Harold Stewart created Ern Malley); issue no. 9 is titled simply Jews, and is devoted to articles by Charles Peguy and Jean-Paul Sartre concerned with Anti-Semitism; throughout the issues there are also art, music and film reviews. An interesting figure in the Broadsheet 'constellation' was the American poet Harry Roskolenko, who became the New York agent for Angry Penguins and was responsible for organising the magazine's American contributions. Roskolenko wrote several pieces for the Broadsheet (poetry and essays) and was joint editor of no. 10, Jazz: Australia. The curious fact about this last issue is that it does not have any positive words (in fact, NO words) to say about bebop, the new jazz idiom which emerged in 1944-45 with recordings by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Coleman Hawkins. Although it includes an interview with Duke Ellington, the remainder of the issue is exclusively (and zealously) devoted to Dixieland jazz, with the introduction provided by the purist, ultra-conservative musician Graeme Bell. Why Roskolenko, a native of New York, did not contribute or include any material in this issue that related to what was arguably the most exciting development in modern music up to that point is a mystery, even more so considering that bebop recordings must have been available for Harris and Reed to listen to in Melbourne by late 1946. This final issue is perplexingly reactionary in tone, as if the Penguins have run out of steam and things have come full circle. They are now the Establishment. Then one turns the page and reads, on page 13, the following grim announcement: 'The publishing firm of Reed & Harris, publishers of "Angry Penguins" and "Angry Penguins Broadsheet", has been forced to close down. This firm was founded for the express purpose of providing a channel of expression for the creative artist in Australia and of helping to give him that security and position in the community to which he is entitled; but after nearly 4 years of work and the publication of 14 books in addition to "Angry Penguins Broadsheet", it has now reached the end of its financial resources.'

Contains 125 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 3" and 5" x 7" with some captions. Very good photo album with worn edges and tears with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a couple, Johnnie and Elsie, during two separate vacations to the White Horse Ranch in the Adirondack Mountains. The first took place in July of 1946 and begins with the couple posing around their vacation cabin in Wevertown, New York. They spent their time meeting the ranch hands, horseback riding, and watching the horses as they were fed, saddled, and taken care of. Many of the photos show Elsie posing on various horses and around the farm. One photo of a group of men reads, "the cowboys talk it over." The couple also enjoyed canoeing, biking, and hiking in the area. The first trip ends with the caption, "you bet we had a swell time again this summer at Saddle Lake. Hope we see you again next year - so long for now." The second half of the album shows a return trip to the ranch with captions such as "boy, this is the life." One photo shows a ranch hand named Davie breaking in a new horse. On the second trip a horse named "Golden Knight" was an apparent favorite with numerous photos showing Johnnie and Elsie watching and riding the horse. Many of the photos have humorous captions such as "resting between sports," "I hope this spring board will hold me up," and "where's my husband," under a photo of a woman rowing a boat presumably taken by Johnnie, the missing husband. A nice collection of vacation photos featuring activities around a New York State dude ranch in the 1940s. .

UNDZER CHURBN IN BILD, OUR DESTRUCTION IN PICTURES.

Bergen Belsen, Undzer Shtime. 1946.. Paperback. 1st edition. Original cardstock binding, Oblong folio, 38 double-sided leaves. Published under the auspices of the Central Committee of the Liberated Jews in the British Zone. The text is in English, Hebrew, Yiddish and German. Each language has its own title page. Printed on Cardstock. Contains 115 photographs of the destruction of the Jews by the Nazis. Each page contains 3 or 4 pictures. The introduction of the book poignantly describes its purpose: "The incentive to produce this collection gave us our deepest desire to show the world the crimes of Germany, to give expression to the throttled cry of pain of the Jews. The desire to bring back our memories of Jewish Settlements which drowned in torrents of Jewish Blood. May the world have this knowledge and ponder on it. When words are too weakened too poor to convey the destruction and extermination of Jewish life, may these pictures found by accident on arrested SS soldiers, speak for themselves of the bestiality which will forever bring shame on human kind. " Lacks Attached fragile paper front coversheet, as usually found, spine rebacked, very clean and solid, Very Good Condition. (HOLO2-101-36A) .

As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935, and later president of the Jewish Agency Executive, he was the de facto leader of the Jewish community in Palestine, and largely led its struggle for an independent Jewish state in Mandatory Palestine.
