        Angry Penguins Broadsheet.

Melbourne: Reed & Harris, 1946 - 10 volumes, quarto. Original paper wrappers, titles to front covers in black. Housed in a black solander box. Mildly toned; an excellent set. A complete set of ten issues. The Angry Penguins Broadsheet was an offshoot of the magazine, Angry Penguins, which was devoted to modernist writings. The title came from Harris's poem, Mithridatum of Despair: "We know no mithridatum of despair/as drunks, the angry penguins of the night/straddling the cobbles of the square/tying a shoelace by fogged lamplight." The first magazine was founded in Adelaide in 1940 by Harris and his co-editor, D. B. "Sam" Kerr, and was published irregularly, with only nine issues in total. The art patrons John and Sunday Reed, together with Max Harris, published The Broadsheet, along with the later issues of the Angry Penguins magazine itself.

Lincoln's Gettysburg Speech. Together with two TLs from Bernhardt Wall to Natalie Williams and a copy of the Kingsport Press Addresses of Abraham Lincoln

Bernhardt Wall, Sierra Madre, CA 1946 - 34pp. Copy number one of 200 copies, signed by Wall, who etched the entirety of this book, including the text and illustrations, and printed and bound the edition. The book is printed in several colors of ink on a variety of papers and includes numerous illustrations of Lincoln and historical elements around his famous Gettysburg speech. The book is accompanied by two letters from Wall to his close friend Natalie Williams, in their original envelopes. Lincoln's Gettysburg Speech and Addresses of Abraham Lincoln, published by the Kingsport Press in 1929, are referenced in the letters and were included in the envelopes when they were mailed. The first letter, 2ff., dated September 25, 1939, discusses Wall's recent marriage (his second) to a widow, Doris Morey. He talks about his reasons for remarrying and how Doris had helped him in his home and work. He gives his thoughts on the progress of his Following Abraham Lincoln series, and, in a handwritten postscript, he mentions that Dard Hunter had been to visit after MIT had bought his old mill. He closes the letter by gifting a copy of the Kingsport Press Addresses of Abraham Lincoln to Williams, as he was in the process of dispersing his book collection. The book contains a dated gift inscription from Wall to Williams on the front free endpaper. The second letter, 1f., is dated July 5, 1946. Wall gifts copy number one of Lincoln's Gettysburg Speech to Williams and talks about it and its predecessor's unexpected popularity. He goes on to chat about Williams's and his families, writing, "And nearly all of your boys are back from the wars. That's something worth being thankful for, eh? Our boy says he's going to be married in August. He has never told us. The G Is are a queer lot. What the war has done to them cannot be described satisfactorily."Both letters are printed with an etching along with the typewritten text, the first announcing that Wall and his new wife would be at home in Lime Rock, Connecticut after October 1st, and the second acting as a letterhead illustrated with a cowboy on a horse. Aside from fold lines and offsetting on one page from the Kingsport Lincoln, the letters are in fine condition. The two enclosed books are sparkling copies. A fascinating archive from an important miniature book artist. (Lincoln's Gettysburg Address measures 1 7/8 by 1 3/8; 47x35mm. Addresses by Abraham Lincoln measures 7/8 by 5/8; 21x16mm).

A zatím co válka. (Sborník. Svazek 3.) [And While the War. (Proceedings. Volume 3.)]

Edice Ra - Rovnost, [Brno] 1946 - Illustrated with 24 full page photographic reproductions. First edition. In publisher's hard paper. With illustrated dust jacket, designed by Vaclav Zykmund. 60, (4) p. First postwar edition of the Czech surrealist RA Group with several full page photographic reproductions. The Ra Group evolved from the circle of the younger surrealist artists around Karel Teige in the pre-war Czechoslovakia. Their first publication - though not yet as "RA" - is considered the 1942 photo book "Roztrhané panenky" (The Dismembered Dolls) by Josef Istler, Milo? Kore?ek, Ludvík Kundera, Vilém Reichmann and Vaclav Zykmund. Their next publication was another book of photographs, the recordings of their private events and happenings, the "Výhru?ný kompas" (The Menacing Compass) in 1944. This brochure "A zatím co válka" (And While the War), is their first post-war publication also the introduction of the group, however not a manifesto, with several illustrations and texts by Ludvík Kundera, Hans Arp, Zden?k Lorenc, Tristan Tzara and Václav Zykmund. It was prepared for their exhibitions within the country, but with its twenty-four, high quality, full page, photographic illustrations (the works by Josef Istler, Milo? Kore?ek, Bohdan Lacina, Otta Mizera, Jaroslav Puchmertl, Vilém Reichmann,Václav Tikal and Václav Zykmund) it was also useful at the International Surrealist Exhibitions in Paris 1947 and in Prague where "RA" exhibited. The Group was soon banned by the Communist authorities and it was dissolved in 1948. With a tiny damage to the tail of the spine. Otherwise in fine condition. In publisher's hard paper.         Photo Album]: Young Woman in China 1926-1946, Three Volumes

China 1946 - Three volumes. Octavo measuring 6" x 8.5"; quarto measuring 8" x 10", oblong quarto measuring 8.5" x 11.5". Two of the volumes are string-tied cloth, one with an embroidered dragon illustration on the front board, the other is textured leather over paper boards. Contains 455 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 6" x 8" with some captions. All volumes near fine with slight edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by Noelie Frances Gutierrez between 1926 and 1946 while living in China. The albums are a collection of family, school, and later military photos compiled by Noelie during her childhood and early adulthood. All the captions are written in English and it is assumed they were Americans stationed in China or that she moved to America after the war. The photos are not kept in complete chronological order but cover two decades of Noelie's life. A large part of her young life was involved with the Coy Guides, a Chinese version of the Girl Scouts. There are photos of the girls in uniform, picnicking, and camping. The girls are seen in group photos in uniform with the 4th Company of the Coy Guides. Noelie's father, who is seen throughout the albums, was a military man sometimes referred to as "Captain Daddy" by Noelie. There are photos of a military base, a few portrait photographs of Mr. Gutierrez, and one of a uniformed man in a bike taxi. The family photos show Noelie and her family around their family homes. One section of photos shows Noelie's first communion in 1936 with photos of her in her white dress and a procession with a statue of the Virgin Mary. In one album a trip to Shanghai is documented with photos of Noelie standing by the Embankment building and a group posing in a garden. The last few pages of one of the albums contains a collection of photostrip portraits of Noelie's family and friends with some signed and dedicated to her. One photo of a destroyed city street has a stamp on the verso saying it is property of "North China Daily News."The final album shows Noelie, with her family apparently still stationed in China, posed with a young soldier during World War II. The album focuses on war related imagery including barracks, an airstrip, ships in a harbor, and soldiers surrounding the 701st MP, Provost Marshals, HQ 5. A series of sweet portrait photos of Noelie and her soldier beau is featured here with the two of them looking cute and in love. The album shows photos of Noelie posing on a mini-golf course and with friends. Later in the album there are photos of a military medal ceremony with soldiers standing at attention and being presented with accolades. After these there is a section of photos showing a fire with images of men on ladders and with water hoses trying to abate the crisis. Men are seen posing around the barracks with military jeeps, enjoying leisurely activities such as playing games in the yard, and working on equipment. One photo shows a man working at a large desk in an office in the barracks. The men are photographed in candids as well as portraits and in group shots. An interesting collection of a young woman's life in China beginning in the 1920s and going through World War II.         Correspondance Morandi - Mino Maccari

1946 - 1957 1946 - The batch contains 3 autograph letters addressed to the painter Mino Maccari: -L.A.S Bologna, June 29, 1949, (28x22cm), perfect state. -L.A.S Bologna, July 14, 1946, (22x30cm), perfect state. -L.A.S Levico, July 12, 1957, (28x18cm) with envelope (14.5x9.5cm) and postmark. Morandi's engraving, always drawn in a limited number of prints (up to a maximum of 75 copies) was supported by the magazine "Il Selvaggio" directed by Mino Maccari. Not only the magazine published many of the artist's etchings, but also the Morandi's name was one of the tops in exhibitions organized by the magazine: the inaugural exhibition (February 1927) of the 'Stanza del Selvaggio', the gallery opened by Maccari in Florence (in this occasion Morandi knew Giuseppe Bottai, who bought two sheets), and the II Esposizione (April 1927). Morandi's success as an engraver was sanctioned with the invitation to introduce a series of bottles at the XVI Venice Biennale (1928): on this occasion the sheets on sale were purchased from the cultural and political elite of Fascism and some museums (The Galleries of Rome, Piacenza and Vienna). The alliance created by Maccari, Longanesi and the secretary of the union of fascist artists, the roman Cipriano Efisio Oppo, with the help of Bottai, allowed Morandi to get the famous engraving chair in January 1930. At the same time with the decrease of his public visibility, Morandi grew in importance as a cultural reference and began to be considered the greatest Italian artist by a group of intellectuals such as Brandi, Longhi, Giulio Carlo Argan, all close to Minister Bottai and protected by him: in 1941, in his critical writing Fronte dell’arte, Bottai pointed to Morandi as the most significant example of the fascist twenty-year art for his ability to re-establish the "weight of the ethical factor in the artistic fact." The object may be located and shipped from Italy, France or UK. Il lotto comprende 3 lettere autografe indirizzate al pittore Mino Maccari: -L.A.S Bologna, 29 giugno del 1949, (28x22cm), perfetto stato. -L.A.S.

POST WWII CARICATURE - YUGOSLAVIA: [GDE JE HITLER? / WHERE IS HITLER?].

4°, [54] with a printed title page, index, 51 full page illustrations, printed recto, and a blank page, original tan illustrated wrappers (Very Good, slightly age-toned, tiny tears in margins and in the spine). - Beograd: Borba 1946. This is a very unusual collection of caricatures, published one year after WWII in Yugoslavia, by a Belgrade based newspaper Borba (Fight). It includes caricatures of people, politicians, religious figures and nations, showing their reactions after the collapse of Hitler’s regime. The caricatures, accompanied by Serbian text in Cyrillic, were inspired by the Balkan humour. The illustrations were made by three famous Yugoslavian academic artists, who were also active in the underground press during WWII: Milorad Ciric (1912 - 1994) was a Serbian painter and journalist and caricature illustrator at the Belgrade newspaper Borba. Nikolaj Pirnat (1903 - 1948) was a leading Slovenian Partisan artist. He studied sculpture in Zagreb and Paris, and made a living before the war illustrating children’s books. Early in the war Pirnat was arrested by the Italian fascists and imprisoned at the concentration camp at Gonars, Italy, but was released upon the capitulation of Italy in September 1943. Thereafter he joined the Partisans, drafting many of the movement’s most iconic images. Following the war, he became a professor of illustration at the Art Academy of Ljubljana. Vlado Kristl (1923-2004) was a filmmaker and artist, best known for his animations and short films, who won many international awards. During WWII he was active as a poster maker for the Partisans.

        The Iceman Cometh. A Play.

New York: Random House, 1946 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt on a red ground, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Spine very slightly faded; an excellent copy in the jacket, small chip to head of spine, a little rubbing to extremities. First edition, first printing. Rare presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Shirlee Weingarten on the front free endpaper: "To Shirlee Weingarten / with affection and gratitude / for all she has done since the / first typing job - all the kindness / in the many small things that only / the sensitive do, as the sensitive appreciate. / I have a guilty feeling I have not / been sufficiently appreciative at times, or have even / been downright rude & taking it for granted / you should light cigarettes for playwrights! I hope / I didn't. If I did, it wasn't meant." O'Neill had Parkinsons from 1943, and copies thus inscribed (at such painstaking, if barely legible, length) are consequently rare. The recipient seems from the inscription to have been O'Neill's amanuensis, making this a touching and close association. Atkinson A35-I-1.a. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

      N. p., apparently March 1946. - 8vo. 1 p. Written on the reverse side of a portion of a 1946 letter written to Gandhi from a young Western follower, George Mammen. Gandhi's has penned some closely-written notes - clearly a draft for a letter. He writes, in fountain pen ink: "Our India will have need of you. You have had your training. You will give India the benefit of that training. It would be sad only if after the trials and suffering ["of war" struck out] that our soldiers have been through, they forget the lessons of their eyes, the moment the peril is lifted. But one thing you should remember, under remunerations and national Govt, you won't be pampered. You won't have all those lavish privileges which a foreign Govt. bribe you with at the expense of India. India is destitute. You can serve her only by showing her destitution and poverty. Otherwise you will earn not the gratitude but the execration of your country. [Now writing at the top of the page:] You will, I know, fully share in this freedom, only to breathe the air of freedom with your countrymen". - Somewhat wrinkled and dust-soiled; small pinhead-sized holes on top.

Solution of Linear Systems of High Order.

[Washington, D.C.]: [n.p.],, 1946. Quarto. Original buff wrappers printed in black, wire-stitched, offset printed typescript. Ownership inscription of R. S. Weinberg to front wrappers. In excellent condition. First edition of this report on computer-oriented numerical analysis, a key document in charting the early development of von Neumann's understanding of the work of Carl Friedrich Gauss. The statistician Harold Hotelling had discredited Gauss's approach to numerical analysis and "advocated using an iterative method to eliminate numerical instability in the solution of large linear systems, a conclusion that von Neumann, Bargmann, and Montgomery supported in the present paper. Von Neumann changed his mind on this a year later ... [He concluded that] he had been overly pessimistic in accepting Harold Hotelling's conjecture that elimination methods such as Gauss's were unsuitable for these types of problems" (Origins of Cyberspace, pp. 477, 479-80). The resulting paper co-authored with Herman H. Goldstine, "Numerical inverting of matrices of high order" (1947), reaffirmed von Neumann's belief in the stability of Gaussian procedure; it is considered to have laid the foundation of modern error analysis. This report was prepared in accordance with Contract NORD-9596 between the Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department and the Institute for Advanced Study.

        All the King's Men

New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1946. First Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine+/Fine-. First Edition (so stated) of perhaps the greatest American political novel and winner of the 1946 Pulitzer prize. 8vo: [6],464pp. Publisher's maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt, second state pictorial dust jacket, with Sinclair Lewis blurb moved to rear flap and six reviews on back panel). Better than Near Fine (minor spotting to boards and gutters, spine slightly faded, but lettering legible and strong); about Fine price-clipped jacket, unusually vivid, fresh and bright. Overall an excellent example of an important novel. Grimshaw A7.a1. Time 100. Modern Library 100, 36. "More than just a classic political novel, Warren's tale of power and corruption in the Depression-era South is a sustained meditation on the unforeseen consequences of every human act, the vexing connectedness of all people and the possibility-it's not much of one-of goodness in a sinful world. Willie Stark, Warren's lightly disguised version of Huey Long, the onetime Louisiana strongman/governor, begins as a genuine tribune of the people and ends as a murderous populist demagogue. Jack Burden is his press agent, who carries out the boss's orders, first without objection, then in the face of his own increasingly troubled conscience. And the politics? For Warren, that's simply the arena most likely to prove that man is a fallen creature. Which it does." (Time 100) Filmed twice, first with Broderick Crawford as Stark in 1949, and again in 2006 with Sean Penn in the starring role. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
