Independent People [Signed by Author, Thor Heyerdahl's copy with his signature ] [Sjálfstætt fólk / Signet]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing, of one of Halldor Laxness' most important works (spine ends pushed, title to spine rather rubbed, some fading to lower region of rear board, modest evidence of handling, quite small spot to shelf edge of rear board) in a Very Good, price-clipped, dust jacket (moderate edge wear and light chipping at the corners), THOR HEYERDAHL'S COPY, SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS in his full name on the title page and SIGNED BY THOR HEYERDAHL on the front free endpaper. Halldor Laxness won the 1955 Nobel Prize of Literature "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland", the only Icelander ever to have won the Prize. Set in the early 20th Century, and published as a single volume in America, this great epic originally appeared in two volumes, "Landnámsmaður Íslands" (1934 - which, translated, means "Icelandic Pioneers") and "Erfiðir tímar" (1935 - which, translated, means "Hard Times"). The two works together comprise "Independent People", the tale of Bjartur, a poor Icelandic sheep farmer who, only recently freed from a system of debt bondage, struggles to survive in Iceland's harsh environment. In his presentation speech at the Nobel Prize ceremony, about Laxness and "Independent People", E. Wessén, Member of the Swedish Academy, stated: "Individual people and their destinies always move us most deeply in Halldór Laxness' novels.....Even more affecting, perhaps, is the story of Bjartur, the man with the indomitable will for freedom and independence, Geijer's yeoman farmer in an Icelandic setting and, with monumental, epic proportions, the settler, the landnámsman of Iceland's thousand-year-old history. Bjartur remains the same in sickness and misfortune, in poverty and starvation, in raging snowstorms and face to face with the frightening monsters of the moors, and pathetic to the last in his helplessness and his touching love for his foster daughter, Ásta Sóllilja." In the view of many, "Independent People" was of great importance in Laxness' winning of the Prize. Signed copies of this epic and important novel are quite scarce, and signed copies in English translation are even more so. As noted above, the copy offered here previously belonged to the great Norwegian ethnographer and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl, and also carries his signature to the front free endpaper. A Very Good copy of one of Halldor Laxness' most significant works, SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS and SIGNED BY THE PRIOR OWNER, THOR HEYERDAHL. RARE.

        UENO DO^BUTSU-EN [UENO ZOO]

1946 - [WOODBLOCK PRINT] ONCHI Ko^shiro. "UENO DO^BUTSU-EN [UENO ZOO]" Image 24.4 x 18.2 cm. This image, created by Onchi for the Nihon Hanga Kyo^kai, originally appeared in Sept. 1929 in an edition of 50cc., signed and sealed by Onchi, as part of the series SHIN TOKYO HYAKKEI. This impression, however, appears to have been that included in the TOKYO KAIKO ZUE series, which was published by Fugaku for the Nihon Hanga Kyo^kai in 1946, in this case using the original Onchi blocks. It would seem that no signature was called for in the TOKYO KAIKO ZUE series, but this print is signed by Onchi (in Kanji) in pencil on the lower right margin. An interesting example of Onchi's representational style. Refs: Austin, SHINTOKYO HYAKKEI - THE EASTERN CAPITAL REVISITED BY THE MODERN PRINT ARTISTS in "Ukiyo-e Art" #14, 1966.; Merritt & Yamada, pp.268 & 277. Good impression with some slight browning on the reverse.

        The War Speeches 1940-1945

Cassell and Company Ltd., London, 1946. Soft cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This is the first collected edition of Churchill's war speeches, published as a paperback only in 1946. The book measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches, bound in pale blue paper wraps with turn in flaps like a DJ, and with contents printed on cheap pulpy paper. With only one softcover printing, this has proven a scarce and fragile edition - among the most difficult of Churchill's books for collectors to find in respectable condition. Offered here is an unusually excellent example for collectors. The covers are remarkably bright and clean, retaining beautiful blue color and showing no losses, even on the spine. The only exterior flaws to report are a slight lean to the spine, fractional wear to the very ends of the rear hinge, and a small triangular crease at the lower front corner. The contents are age-toned, as is unavoidable given the pulp paper, but otherwise clean and tight. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks of any kind. The front flap is neatly price-clipped. The book is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A224, Woods/ICS A113, Langworth p.241.

        The War Speeches 1940-1945

This is the first collected edition of Churchill's war speeches, published as a paperback only in 1946. The book measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches, bound in pale blue paper wraps with turn in flaps like a DJ, and with contents printed on cheap pulpy paper. With only one softcover printing, this has proven a scarce and fragile edition - among the most difficult of Churchill's books for collectors to find in respectable condition. Offered here is a well-preserved example, protected in an accompanying, custom clamshell presentation case. The binding is square and sound. The front flap is unclipped, still bearing the "5s. net" price. The wraps are highly complete, with fractional chipping at the spine ends and wear along the hinges. Spine presentation is quite respectable, with all lettering intact and clearly legible and the bright blue color unfaded. There is a "7/6" bookseller price notation in pencil at the top right corner of the front cover. The contents are age-toned, as is unavoidable given the pulp paper. No inscriptions. Light spotting appears only on the blank verso of both covers and the top edge of the text block. The custom clamshell preservation case is in maroon cloth with black leather spine label and acid-free interior lining. As an added preservation precaution, the book itself has a removable, clear archival mylar cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A224, Woods/ICS A113, Langworth p.241.

Robinhood, Me., ca. 1946. Watercolor. 21 x 25 inches. Signed.& Provenance: Estate of the artist. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919, Jason Schoener came from a family of distinguished American artists. He was the nephew of sculptor/painter William Zorach and his wife, painter Marguerite Zorach. Beginning in 1939, Schoener spent his summers at the Zorach family farm in Georgetown, Me., where he studied art with his Uncle William. After service in the Pacific during WWII, Schoener served as an instructor, department chairman, and dean at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA.         Tomorrow on the March

Los Angeles: The Time-Binder Press, 1946. Stapled quarto sized sheets. (i) (15) pp. First edition. Reprints the text of van Vogt's speech, which he delivered as the guest of honor at the 1946 Pacificon. The speech was delivered on July 4, and presumably published shortly thereafter by E. Everett Evans's Timebinder Press -- a point which has led to the assertion that this is actually van Vogt's first separate publication, as Slan was published late in 1946, according to the Arkham House bibliography. Minute tear to outer front margin, light uniform browning to paper, else an extraordinarily fine copy of a fragile, ephemeral item.

SAIGOKU SAN-JU^-SAN-SHO JUNREI EMAKI

1946. [SKETCH TOUR GENRE] NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu, artist. SAIGOKU SAN-JU^-SAN-SHO JUNREI EMAKI. Kyoto, Kanao Bun'endo^, publisher. Sho^wa 21 [1946]. Oblong folio of o^ban size woodblock prints after designs by Hiromitsu, detailing the famous pilgrimage sites (and sights) in western Japan. The blocks were cut by Okada Seijiro^ and the printers were Nishimura Kumakichi and Takagi Kiyomitsu. This portfolio project was initially completed and printed in 1925. This edition, printed from the same blocks at the very end of Kanao's life, was obviously issued as a companion piece to the THIRTY-SIX VIEWS OF OSAKA, which Kanao also published in 1946. The colors of the original 1925 edition were quite a bit more light and "crumbly" than the bolder colors used in this printing, which accord with that used in the Osaka series. (I personally like this bolder approach to Hiromitsu's work.) There are eleven color woodblock printed preliminary pages, a table of contents page, 37 pilgrimage views, a final portrait of Hiromitsu by an artist friend, and eleven typeset caption pages, explaining the pilgrimage sites, (in Japanese). A lovely and very important series of images, produced by the most important publisher of the "sketchtour" genre. A set in very nice condition, bound into the original printed covers (approx. 25 x 36.7 cm). Complete, in a tied chemise case.
