Los Angeles: Selznick International Pictures / Vanguard Films, 1946. An archive of 3 scripts relating to an unproduced film version of "Joan of Arc" developed by Selznick International Pictures and Vanguard Films. The archive includes: Early partial treatment (but complete as issued) for an unproduced film, "Joan of Arc," written for the screen by Ben Hecht. The treatment ends with Joan being brought from her cell, still in armor, to see the judges for the first time. Though incomplete in terms of the story, this clearly the script that was issued, probably for approval toward a more fully developed screenplay (for which Hecht did complete at least two later drafts). Pale green titled wrappers, with title and credit for screenwriter Hecht, rubber-stamped copy No. 15 and dated 10/7/46 on the front wrapper. 9 leaves, mimeograph, rectos only. Pages and wrapper Near Fine bound with three tarnished silver brads. Second Draft script by Ben Hecht. Blue card wrappers, rubber-stamped Copy No. 37, with the title, credit for screenwriter Hecht, and date of November 12, 1946 (Re-run April 11, 1947) on the front wrapper. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page is integral with the first page of text. 150 leaves, all on plain white stock, mimeograph. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, internally bound with three silver brads. Research document for an unproduced film. A separate and rather extensive document translated by Donald M. Frame from the original Jules Quicherat French text for use in development of the film. The document is divided into two sections: (1) a 62-page section detailing the "Exposition and preliminaries of the case" and the first five sessions, and (2) a 135-page section detailing the sixth session, followed by several sessions both in prison and in court. Gray card wrappers, rubber-stamped Copy No. 18, with the title, credit for author Quicherot and translator Frame, and a date of 10/10/46 on the front wrapper. Hecht's first treatment for the film was submitted just three days before, on 10/7/46. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page is integral with the first page of text. 197 leaves, all on plain white stock, mimeograph. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three silver brads.

Manual of Operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator

Harvard University Press, Cambridge MA 1946 first edition; 561 pages, 17 plates, text illustrations;. Good overall, dark blue cloth hardcover, 8x11. Ex-university library bookplate on front pastedown, pocket removed from rear leaving remnants, chipping to spine ends esp. along heel, tape residue on front board, numerals on lower spine. Binding is sound though front hinge is tender and lower third of rear hinge is begining to pull away from the textblock. Internal pages are clean and unmarked. A increasingly scarce book in any condition, this is a sound & clean copy but for the library attributes. A thick large book with fullpage black and white photographs of the Harvard Mark I electromechanical computer. A manual of operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, by the staff of the Computation Laboratory. with an Index, an extensive bibliography of related books & journal articles, and a historical introduction co-written by Aiken & Hopper. The Harvard Mark I was the first programmable calculating machine, and the majority of this volume is devoted to technical descriptions of its components, architecture and operation, and coding examples (some of the earliest examples anywhere of digital computer programs (see Ceruzzi, 1985). This is Volume 1 of the Annals of the Computation Laboratory of Harvard University. 'In May 1944 the staff of the Computation Project began operations with the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator as an activity of the Bureau of Ships. One of the first tasks undertaken was the preparation of a report setting forth the coding procedures of the calculator. This was followed by detailed plugging instructions, which unfortunately were hardly completed before the code book was out of date. In the succeeding months, computing techniques were developed so rapidly that stabilized operating instructions could not be prepared. At the same time, many mathematicians, physicists & engineers requested copies of such data on operating techniques as were available in the laboratory. This general and widespread interest encouraged the Staff to publish this Manual of Operation as the first volume of the Annals of the Computation Laboratory, rather than as a mimeographed compilation of notes as originally intended. Thus the Manual is unusual in that it is an outgrowth of notes prepared by the Staff primarily for their own use.... The Manual is also exceptional in that it represents the work of a great many people whose efforts have been closely integrated as is necessary in the operation of large-scale calculating machines. Chapters I & II represent extensions and revisions by Lt. Grace Murray Hopper, USNR, of the writer's old notes, many of which were written before work on the calculator was begun. Chapter III was written by Lieutenant Hopper with the collaboration of other members of the Staff. Chapters IV and V represent the outgrowth of the original code book and plugging instructions prepared by the writer and Lt(jg) Robert V D Campbell, USNR. Nearly every member of the Staff has made contributions to these chapters b

Adolphe ou le malheur des sentiments. Manuscrit autographe.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Autograph manuscript appeared in Arch No. 20 of October 1946 and Faux Pas.
