        L'Honneur des poètes. Manuscrit autographe.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] A manuscript autograph appeared in the Ark No. 18-19 of 7 August 1946 against dishonor poets Peret. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Our Destruction in Pictures

Our Voice, Bergen-Belsen 1946 - Oblong Quarto. 38 leafs. Bound in three quarter black Moroccan with marbled boards, original, color illustrated wraps bound in. Marbled endpapers. Ribbon marker. This rare, disturbingly poignant gathering of Holocaust images, predominantly taken in the ghettos of Beldzin and Lodz and the camp in Bergen-Belsen by captured Nazi soldiers, might best be described in the words of the editors: "The incentive to produce this collection gave us our deepest desire to show the world the crimes of Germany, to give expression to the throttled cry of pain of the Jews, to the sighs of our fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, during the frozen nights of winter and the overpowering heat of the summer which was spent in sealed railway trucks, the desire to bring back to our memories of the Jewish settlements which were drowned in torrents of Jewish blood". Prepared in advance of the Nuremberg Trials as a further evidence of Nazi crimes. Features 115 striking b/w photographs with captions in Yiddish, Hebrew, English, and German. Separate title pages in all four languages. Some creasing of front endpapers. Repairs to bound in front wraps with residue of the glue on first title page and some offsetting of b/w images to opposing blank pages. Overall in very good condition.         NIGHT AND THE CITY

Simon and Schuster, [1946]., 1946. First U. S. edition. Fine in dust jacket with light wear to the foot of spine and along the top edge of the front cover panel. Laid-in to this copy is a card from the publisher asking the reader if they enjoyed the book. If so, why? And if not, why not? "The novel tells of the little-known behind-the-lights-and-glitter goings on in big city night life. It is often shocking and always fascinating. The central character is Harry Fabian, possibly the most completely loathesome character in modern fiction. Born in a Cockney slum, merciless, shrewd, vicious, he lives in a fantastic dream world fired by American gangster films. He is the archtype of the petty underworldling and his story is an odyssey of evil, peopled with a wealth of original characters and written with profound psychological insight." Made into the 1950 movie of the same name, directed by Jules Dassin and starring Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney, Googie Withers, Hugh Marlowe, Herbert Lom, Mike Mazurki, and a host of others.

Signed Letter - REVIEWING A BANNED BOOK BY EDMUND WILSON

Typed manuscript signed ("Thomas Mann"), 1 page, on personal letterhead, 10 7/8 x 7 in., Pacific Palisades, California, August 22, 1946. With one word correction in Mann's hand. Signature faded. Mann defends Memoirs of Hecate County against its suppression. "A novel by so literary an author as Mr. Edmund Wilson is obviously not meant for mass-consumption but for a circle of readers spiritually equipped to cope with its contents. Curiously, it is often works of artistic value that are being suppressed, whereas more popular products, fit to contribute to the brutalisation of the masses remain uncontested. The virtuous lust for suppression constitutes a feature of world fascism which - it is to be hoped - has not yet taken sufficient root in this country to determine the course of its intellectual life."Mann (1875-1955) won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1924) after publishing The Magic Mountain. He was one of many German writers and intellectuals who left Germany when Hitler came to power, fleeing to Switzerland in 1933, and when the war began in 1939, moving to the U.S. He lived there until 1952, when he returned to Switzerland. American writer and literary critic Edmund Wilson's (1895-1972) Memoirs of Hecate County was first published in 1946, but was banned in the United States until 1959.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, , 1946. With an Essay by Robert Penn Warren. Large square octavo. Original red cloth. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom-made solander box. Illustrated throughout by Alexander Calder. Nicks, chips and tears to jacket, vertical abrasion on back panel, book a little shaken, spine slightly rolled and sunned. First edition illustrated by Calder, first printing. Presentation copy, flamboyantly inscribed on the front free endpaper by the artist: "With much love to Peter & Ebie Blume (the petals of a flower forming the "B" in Blume) from Sandy, (in a slightly punctured condition) Xmas 1950", Calder makes a reference here to the fact that he had recently been involved in an automobile accident; also inscribed below this by Robert Penn Warren: "To Peter and Ebie - all love & thanks for the privilege of writing the fact here - Red. April 24, 1985". The dedicatee, Malcolm Cowley, has inscribed below his dedication portrait: "No, no, for Peter and Ebie! Malcolm, April 1985". The recipients were the Russian-born American painter and sculptor Peter Blume (1906-1992) and his wife Ebie, who were part of a small artistic community in Connecticut after the Second World War, and which included Arshile Gorky; "during the 1930s and 1940s the popularity of Blume's dreamlike paintings, filled with obsessive detail, made him one of America's best-known artists" (MoMA online). Calder's lithe line illustrations have been described as "elegantly detached, playful, and almost New Yorker cartoon style" (J.C.C. Mays, Coleridge's Experimental Poetics, 2013). A wonderful association copy linking four major cultural figures of mid-century America.

The Member of the Wedding (First Edition)

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1946. First Edition. First Edition. Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket without a trace of the usual spine fading, only a little rubbing and a couple of tiny short closed tears. McCullers adapted this novel into a play that opened on Broadway with Julie Harris and Ethel Waters and won numerous awards. Waters and Harris then recreated their Broadway roles in the 1952 Fred Zinneman film, with Harris nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. A not uncommon title in mediocre condition, this an unusually sharp example.

        ANIMAL FARM

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1946. Printed wrappers. Publication information and date stamped on front wrapper. Spine and extremities of wrappers darkened, two small nicks to upper joint, soft corner crease, otherwise very good. Advance "confidential" reading copy of the first American edition. The number of recipients who shared in the "confidentiality" of receiving copies is not readily accessible, but experience suggests there were quite a significant number of them. Not in Fenwick in this format, where such advance formats are not always noted. MODERN MOVEMENT 93.

Original ticket and invitation letter to Churchill's famous 5 March 1946 "Iron Curtain" speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri

Fulton, Missouri: Westminster College, 1946. This is an original ticket and letter of invitation to Churchill's famous "Iron Curtain" speech delivered at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri on March 5, 1946. There, Churchill coined the phrase that described the division between the Soviet Union's sphere of influence and the West. This speech incisively framed the Cold War that would dominate the second half of the Twentieth Century: "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent.... I repulse the idea that a new war is inevitable; still more that it is imminent... If we adhere faithfully to the Charter of the United Nations and walk forward in sedate and sober strength seeking no one's land or treasure, seeking to lay no arbitrary control upon the thoughts of men... the high-roads of the future will be clear, not only for us but for all, not only for our time, but for a century to come." Then-President Harry S. Truman traveled with Churchill by special train from Washington D.C. for the twenty four hour overnight journey to Jefferson City, Missouri specifically to introduce Churchill in Fulton. With them was Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy. During the journey, the three men discussed recent Soviet provocations in northern Persia and Turkey. "During the morning of March 5, as the train continued westward along the Missouri river, Churchill completed his speech for Fulton. It was then mimeographed on the train, and a copy shown to Truman" who told Churchill that he “thought it was admirable” and “would do nothing but good, though it would make a stir.” (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, pp.196-197). Upon arriving in Jefferson City shortly before noon on March 5, Churchill, Truman, and Leahy drove to Fulton, where they met and lunched with Dr. Franc L. McCluer, the College president, before the academic procession and delivery of the speech. Though the subject of the speech was of utmost gravity, Churchill began with characteristic wit: “The name ‘WestminsterÂ’ is somehow familiar to me. I seem to have heard of it before.” The speech was broadcast throughout the United States. We have never before offered an original ticket and this is no surprise. In the invitation letter from the Westminster College McCluer specifically stated: "Every seat in the Gymnasium and in the Chapel at the College will be reserved. Seats are non-transferable. Since we have a long waiting list, if for any reason you are unable to use your ticket, please return it to us, or if your plans are changed at the last minute, wire us." Though it is difficult to understand how the holder of this ticket could choose to leave it unused, we can be glad that he did. The ticket is printed on one side in dark blue ink on medium blue heavy card stock and measures 3 x 5 inches. The bottom of the ticked is printed "No. 438" at the bottom center. Typed at the top of the ticket is the name of the recipient, a "Mr. Henry N. Oliver". Condition of the ticket is near fine, clean with unfaded color, marred only by mild creasing to the lower corners. The ticket is protected in a clear, removable, heavy mylar sleeve. The accompanying TLS of 18 February 1946 is printed on Westminster College stationery, measures 9.375 inches by 5.875 inches, with a typed message signed by Westminster College President Dr. Franc L. McCluer. The letter is in fine condition, with two horizontal creases ostensibly from the original mailing, but otherwise clean, bright, and without wear. The letter is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve.
