Nuremberg Trials: Allied Opening and Closing Speeches

1946 - (WORLD WAR II) (NUREMBERG TRIALS). Nuremberg Trials: Opening Speech, Soviet Union; Closing Speech, Britain; Closing Speeches United States, France and Soviet Union. Nuremberg: no publisher, August 1946. Three volumes. Folio (8-1/2 by 13 inches), original half blue linen, manuscript title labels affixed to front covers, mimeographed typescripts. $6500.Dramatic collection of opening speeches and closing arguments made by the Allied prosecutorial teams during the 1946 Nuremberg Trials, including the Opening Statement of the USSR, the final speech by the British prosecutor against Nazi Organizations, the closing statement by the United States against the German General Staff and High Command, the Final Argument for the United States by Thomas Dodd, and final statements against Nazi organizations by France and the USSR. From the working library of Eric Bourne, head of the Reuters team covering the trials, with his owner signatures and annotations in shorthand, almost certainly used by him and his team to file stories and convey the drama and consequences of the Nuremberg Trials to the world. At the Nuremberg Trials the prosecution entered indictments against 24 major war criminals and six criminal organizations: the leadership of the Nazi party, the Schutzstaffel (SS) and Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the Gestapo, the Sturmabteilung (SA) and the "General Staff and High Command," comprising several categories of senior military officers. Volume I records the Opening Statement of the USSR Chief of Counsel, Lieutenant General R.A. Rudenko, "Crimes Against Peace" by Deputy USSR Chief of Counsel, Colonel W.V. Pokrovsky, and "Aggression Against the USSR" by M.D. Zorya. Volume II records the Final Speech by the British prosecutor Maxwell Fyfe, against Nazi Organizations and the Final Argument for the United States of America by Thomas J. Dodd. Volume III records the Closing Statement for the USA by Telford Taylor, et al., against the General Staff and High Command and final statement on the Organizations by R.A. Rudenko on behalf of the USSR and the final statement on the Organizations by Auguste Champetier de Ribes on behalf of France. The closing arguments by the prosecutors at the Trial concluded on August 20, 1946, and the following day the defendants were given a chance to make final statements before the Tribunal. All 21 defendants elected to address the Court. The Tribunal was adjourned for one month while the Judges considered their verdicts. Owner signature of journalist Eric Bourne, head of the Reuters team covering the Nuremberg Trials, to five of the part titles, together with sporadic shorthand notes by Bourne in pen or pencil, plus occasional pencil marks, underlining, and word corrections. It is not clear from Bourne's notes in these three volumes when he made them, or what the shorthand says, though presumably they were all made around the time of the trials and to aid him and his team in filing stories. Bourne later recorded that when Rudolph Hess was brought in for sentencing, he produced a "torrent of gabbled words""having earlier declined to accept the Court's jurisdiction. Bourne recalled getting the entire rant down in shorthand and sending the story to Reuters with ample direct quotes, skipping the other reporters. "Once sure his story was through, he shared his notes with the rest" (Guardian, March 18, 1999).The first volume is slightly browned and dampstained at front, affecting covers and first few leaves, with frayed boards; the other two volumes are lightly rubbed only. A very good, scarce, and important contemporary record of major speeches and arguments from the Nuremberg Trials. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        KZ Mauthausen

1946 - (HOLOCAUST) WIESENTHAL, Simon. KZ. Mauthausen. Linz and Wien: Ibis-Verlag, 1946. Quarto, original tan paper wrappers printed in red and black. $2000.First edition of Simon Wiesenthal's rare first book, published only one year after his liberation from the brutality of Mauthausen death camp, one of the first published narratives of the Holocaust, with his text in German, a full-page duotone of Mauthausen, red-and-black front wrapper and 25 full-page duotones after striking original drawings and photo-montages by him, in original wrappers. This scarce first edition of KZ. Mauthausen, the first book by Simon Wiesenthal, is one of the first published narratives of the Holocaust. In this work's text and its 26 powerful duotone plates, including 25 after drawings and photo-montages by Wiesenthal, he records the horror of Mauthausen, which "had the highest death rate of all the concentration camps". Of the 335,000 prisoners estimated to have passed through Mauthausen and its satellites, 122,767 were murdered" (Encyclopedia Judaica). Imprisoned in the Janowska camp, Wiesenthal was among those forced on a brutal death march in the face of the advancing Red Army, "with stops at the camps in Plasgow, Gross-Rosen and Buchenwald and ending at Mauthausen in Austria. There Wiesenthal, weighing 97 pounds, was liberated by Americans on May 5, 1945. Almost as soon as he could stand, he began collecting evidence on the atrocities for the War Crimes Section of the United States Army" (New York Times). To Wiesenthal, "the Holocaust was not only a Jewish tragedy, but a human one". he deserves to be remembered for his contribution to the culture of memory and the belief that remembering the dead is sanctifying life" (Segev, Simon Wiesenthal, 7-10). His lifelong work in tracking down Nazis famously led to the capture of Eichman and he also found the man "responsible for arresting Anne Frank and her family in their secret annex in Amsterdam, a feat of sleuthing that buttressed the credibility of Anne's diary in the face of neo-Nazi claims that it was fabricated". Governments, security agencies and lonely survivors turned their eyes to him when no one else had hard information or a sympathetic ear" (New York Times). Text in German. OCLC lists 35 copies worldwide, including the U.S. Holocaust Museum, Stanford, Princeton, Museum of Jewish Heritage, Brandeis, Ben Gurion University, Tel Aviv University and the National Library of Israel. A fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

In very good condition, the image bright and sharp, some folds & closed tears evident on close examination! Frank Sherwin was born in 1896 in Derby and trained first at the Derby School of Art and then the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London.         An Elementary Derivation of the Equivalence of Mass and Energy.

Haifa, The Hebrew Institute of Technology Haifa, (1946). 4to. Offprint from "Technion Journal. A Yerabook Devoted to the Advancement of Technological Training and Research in Palestine and the Middle East". (4) pp. Clean and fine. First edition in the scarce offprint of an importent paper as it represents Einstein's last and most simple derivation of the energy-mass relation, the famous equivalence expressed in the equation E=mc2.Einstein was never satisfied with his 1905 (and later) derivation(s) of the mass-energy relation. In spite of many strenous efforts he did not succeeded in establishing a general proof of the relation. "That he also always strived for greater generality by narrowing down the range of the postulated premises, can be gathered from the introductory remarks to his last published derivation of 1946 (the paper offered)"(Max Jammer): "The following derivation of the law of equivalence, which has not been published before, has two advantages.Although it makes use of the principle of special relativity, it does not presume the formal machinery of the theory but uses only three kown laws: (1) The law of the conservation of momentum. (2) The expression for the pressure of radiation; that is the momentum of a complex ofradiation moving in a fixed direction. (3) The well known expression for the aberration of light (influenceof the motion of the earth on the apparent location of the fixed stars - Bradley)" (Einstein in the foreword to the offered paper).Weil: 218 - Boni: 253.- Not in Shields. The paper was reprinted in "Out of My Later Years", 1950.

        Collection of Skupina Ra Material

Group of books, manifestos, exhibition catalogs, and original work related to the Czech post-war surrealist group Skupina Ra (Ra Group), approximately 17 items total, several duplicates, including the group's two 1946 anthologies, "A Zatím Co Válka (And While the War)", and Skupina Ra, which contain their manifestos; individual exhibition catalogues by Josef Istler and Bohdan Lacina; examples of book design and illustration by Istler and Václav Tikal; and literary works by other members of the group, especially Ludvík Kundera. Illustrated throughout. Various sizes and formats, mostly 8vo. Most volumes with orig. wrpps. Various cities (Czech Republic) 1946-1987. Some volumes signed and inscribed. Skupina Ra was a group of painters, graphic artists, photographers, poets, writers, and translators that became active in the late 1930s, continued to exist illegally during the German Protectorate, and held public exhibits in the late 1940s before being banned by the Czech Communist goverment in 1948 as a hostile movement. Its core members included Zden k Lorenc, Ludvík Kundera, Josef Istler, Miloš Ko e ek, Bohdan Lacina, Vilém Reichmann, Václav Tikal, and Václav Zykmund. Although Surrealism was forbidden by both the Fascist Protectorate and the Communist goverment, it was a strong influence in Czech post-war art and literature. As of November 2016, most titles appear to be held by very few North American institutions or not at all.

Folio, earlier numbers (1946, Number 1 through 1948, Number 18) bound in half black cloth and boards; remaining numbers (1948, Number 19 through 1951, Number 2) unbound, folded once as issued. $15,000.Scarce, nearly complete run of the earliest issues of the Zionist newspaper Unser Welt, "Our World," the "National Weekly for Jewry in Europe," published in Munich just after World War II and the Holocaust.Unser Welt was a Zionist-oriented publication with a deep respect for the Revisionist wing of the Zionist movement, with editorial offices in Munich and Paris. Initially, for the first two numbers, the newspaper was called Hamdina ("The State"); this collection contains both Numbers 1 and 2 of Hamdina (all published under that name) along with Number 1 of the newly titled Unser Welt, all from 1946. By the late 1940s, however, Unser Welt's circulation reached several European nations besides Germany, namely Switzerland, France, Austria, Belgium, Sweden and Italy, and its sub-title proclaimed it to be the "National Weekly for Jewry in Europe." The very fact that Unser Welt sought to be the publication of European Jewry spoke volumes about a conscious decision of a number of Jews to remain in the continent where two-thirds of their brethren had been murdered. This collection includes from 1946, both Numbers 1 and 2 of Hamdina, then of Unser Welt, Numbers 1, 5, 8-15, 18, 20-21, 23-30; from 1947, Numbers 31, 33-45a, 48-82; from 1948, Numbers 1-18, all of which are bound together in one folio volume. The collection also gathers, from 1948, Numbers 19-49, 51-62, 65-69; from 1949, Numbers 3-13, 15-17, 20-30, 35-42, 44/45-46, 49; from 1950, Numbers 1-50; and from 1951, Number 2. These are all unbound, folded once as issued. Text in Yiddish, with photographic and line illustrations. A few minor closed tears and mild edge-wear to unbound numbers. Exceptionally good condition.       1946 - [BROWN, Margaret Wise]. MACDONALD, Golden (pseudonym) and WEISGARD, Leonard. The Little Island. Garden City: Doubleday, 1946. Oblong octavo, original half blue cloth and pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket. $1600.First edition of this award-winning picture book, with text by Margaret Wise Brown and color pictorial boards and 21 full-page color illustrations, signed by the illustrator, Leonard Weisgard.Kingfishers, butterflies and a little kitten explore the secrets of a beautiful island in this lushly illustrated children's book. "Brown was a prolific writer and used several pseudonyms in addition to her own name, signing books as Golden MacDonald, Timothy Hay and Juniper Sage". The passionate energy with which she wrote and the casual way she selected and used pseudonyms reflect her personality as others knew it. The number of her books, as well as their appeal, contributed to her enormous sales; by the end of 1946 [the year in which this title was published]". some 835,000 copies of her books had been sold". Ironically, Brown's productivity may have delayed formal recognition of her talent" (ANB). "Although Weisgard illustrated stories for numerous authors, he was known especially for his association with Margaret Wise Brown". Weisgard was a runner-up for the Caldecott Medal in 1946 for his illustrations to Little Lost Lamb and won the award in 1947 for The Little Island; Brown wrote both books under the pseudonym Golden MacDonald" (Britannica Online).         Portrait of Jennie (Original screenplay for the 1948 film | October 29, 1946 draft)

Los Angeles: Vanguard Films, 1946. First Temporary Draft script for the 1948 film. One of the great melodramas--veering strongly into the realm of fantasy and ghost stories--of the late 1940s. Painstakingly developed by David O. Selznick and then sold to Vanguard Pictures (to whom Selznick International was sold). "Portrait of Jennie" is a romantic fantasy so strange and concept-driven that it has always eluded mass popularity. Joseph Cotten portrays a struggling artist who becomes enamored--and then obsessed--with a little girl named Jennie who inexplicably begins to grow to womanhood over a period of weeks. Blue titled wrappers. 156leaves, mimeograph, with pink and blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 11/29/46 and 12/12/46. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads. Weldon (1996), p. 437.

Boomerang! (Original screenplay for the 1947 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1946. Revised Final script for the 1947 film "Boomerang!." Brief notation in holograph pencil on one page. Based on a Reader's Digest article (1945) by Fulton Oursler (as Anthony Abbot), in turn based on an actual incident involving a Catholic priest and a mentally unstable homeless man. Henry L. Harvey (Andrews) is a public attorney hired to defend a strange out-of-towner accused of murdering a priest. Producer Louis De Rochemont's innovative documentary-style filmmaking is perhaps at it's best in this film, drawing heavily from his previous film, the 1945 Henry Hathaway noir, "The House on 92nd Street." Set in Connecticut, shot on location there and in New York. Nominated for an Academy Award. Self wrappers. Title page integral with front wrapper, dated September 6, 1946, noted as REVISED Final Script, with credits for screenwriter Murphy and writer Oursler (as Abbot). 162 leaves, with the last leaf of text numbered 155. Mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 9/18/46 and 9/25/46. Near Fine overall, bound with two gold brads. Grant, p. 87. Selby Canon. Silver, p. 55. Spicer, p. 406.

His story The Unloved was made into the film Niekoc ,hana (1966).       1946. 4to. 1 p. In English, to Dr. Andor Klay, on his imprinted stationery: "But isn't it a strange and characteristic phenomenon of the mental condition of the German of today that the author feels he must apologize for me because of my letter to Molo and even because of my broadcast during the war? He says that, after all, one cannot expect me to possess the qualities of a political fighter, - and all the while I had imagined to have indeed been something like a political fighter during the last two decades".
