        Buchenwald

Den Haag (The Hague): "Het Centrum", 1945. First edition. Softcover. g to vg. Folio (13 1/2 x 8 1/4"). 32pp. Original illustrated paper portfolio. Photo-illustrated title page. A collection of 24 drawings (including covers) by Henri Pieck, a survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp, depicting the atrocities and dreadful conditions in the Nazi death camp.Six of the twenty-four drawings are double-page, and all are signed and dated in the plate. Some age-toning, sporadic creasing and tiny chipping along edges of portfolio. Pages slightly and evenly age-toned. Text in Dutch and English. Portfolio in overall good- to good, interior in good to very good condition. About the artist: Henri Christiaan Pieck (1895-1972) was born in Den Helder, Netherlands. He had a twin brother Anton. Both brothers would have successful careers as artists. Henri's talent was recognized early, and he began drawings lessons while a young boy. In 1912, he moved to Amsterdam where he joined the Communist Party in 1914. Pieck became a painter, with a special interest in portraits of dancers and scenes of working class life. He was also a commercial artist and illustrator. By 1920, he was receiving major commissions, such as a series of paintings for the Scala Theater in The Hague. In May 1940, Germany occupied the Netherlands. They installed a civil administration under the control of the SS, staffed chiefly by German and Austrian born Nazis. As a member of the Communist underground, Henri Pieck helped produce the journal De Vonk. He was arrested by the Germans on June 9, 1941, for resistance activities. He was interned in Scheveningen prison and the German police transit camp Amersfoort. In April 1942, Pieck was deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. His artistic talent gave him some protection in the camp and he did portraits and other drawings and paintings for the SS guards. Pieck was part of the Dutch section of the International Camp Committee, and they provided him with materials to record the atrocities and dreadful conditions in the camp.

1945 ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY ANNA & KING OF SIAM Presentation Copy to HERBERT RYMAN

1945 - ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM. SCREENPLAY by TALBOT JENNINGS. PRESENTATION COPY to HERBERT RYMAN, the Great Disney Imagineer. Handwritten in pencil on the front cover is: "to herbert Ryman / July 7, '45". I don't know who presented this copy to Ryman, whether it was Talbot or?? Carbon typescript. Paper Covers, bound with 2 brass brackets, 8.5x11", printed on one side only (rectos), pages numbered in three parts - 87, 74 and 32 pages (193 total pages). Cover has a typed title and author. The script does not have a printed date, but the written presentation on the cover is dated July 7, 1945, and clearly this is a draft that was written prior to Sally Benson being brought on as a co-writer, so early 1945 is most likely the date of this version of the film script. CONDITION: The covers are very worn, the edges have chips, tears and creases, the covers have some stiff creases and lighter creases from handling, nonetheless the covers are still doing their job well, and the typed titling and written presentation on the front cover are bright and fully legible. Internally, the title page has torn from its upper bracket, is coming loose, and has numerous creases; the next couple of pages have a few crease but are still sturdy and in place; all the pages are lightly toned / browned with age; otherwise the pages are just lightly used and still complete, bright, clean and unmarked. A VERY RARE EARLY DRAFT of ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM with the GREAT ASSOCIATION to HERBERT RYMAN. You can read about Talbot Jennings on Wikipedia and about Herbert Ryman on Wikipedia and many other online sites. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Soviet propanda poster - Great Patriotic War, TASS, 1945.

Soviet propanda poster - TO THE HEROES OF THE SKY!Template painted poster (nr. TASS 1288) after the design by A. Plotnov, made in (August?) 1945.Officers watching air display and parachute landings?Glory to the masters of the high sky,To the brave commanders of military exploits:To the valiant pilots, Stalin?s falconsTo the proud heroes, to the soldierconquerors.??Author: A. Zharov. Artist: A. Plotnov. Dimensions: 159 x 86,5 cm.The major role in Soviet poster art in the war was played by the TASS Windows. They were large, brightly coloured, hand-painted posters, stencilled and produced in runs of up to 1000 copies. They usually were accompanied by a didactic text or often quite lengthy poem. They were the direct descendants of the comparable ROSTA Windows of the Civil War period, so-called because they were displayed in the empty shop-windows of that period. Like ROSTA, TASS was the official Soviet telegraphic agency of the day, and the purpose of the association of this propaganda effort with the agency was both to provide a continuing visual chronicle of the war and to respond immediately, often within hours to the latest telegrams of TASS. M M Chermnykh, who had initiated the ROSTA Windows, also took the lead in the 1941 project. On 24 June the organisational committee of the Union of Soviet Artists established the TASS Window collective and the first poster appeared already on 27 June 1941. The Windows were numbered through to no. 1485 in June 1945. About 1250 were made in the original manner with stencils during the war itself. The theme and the text of each TASS Window were agreed with the leader of the collective, and ultimately with the agreement of TASS. TASS was the official news agency for dissemination of Soviet news abroad and for reception of news from abroad and consequently was strictly controlled by the Party. Most posters were completed and reproduced within 24 hours, the team working in three shifts. After the artist had completed the drawing and painting of the illustration, the poster was cut up into sections and stencils were cut out appropriate to each colour used in the composition. The most elaborate posters used up to 60 stencils. The stencils were then passed to the copy room where each section was copied on a lithographic machine in waterproof oil colours, initially in very few copies but eventually in up to 1000 copies. When all the colours had been applied to each stencilled section, they had to be glued together to make the completed poster and the text was added in a separate operation. The Hallward Library of the University of Nottingham holds a large collection of TASS Posters. For more information, the collection is described in detail here.Price: ?3.000,- (incl. frame, excl. VAT/BTW).

Zabákova dobrodruzst-ví. [Wind in the Willows].

[Prague:] Druzstevní práce, 1945. - Czech “Wind in the Willows” GRAHAME (Kenneth). Zabákova dobrodruzst-ví. [Prague:] Druzstevní práce, 1945. Eight full-page black-and-white illustrations + 8 colorplates by Josefa Capka [i.e., Josef Capek]. 8vo, 193[4]pp; original cloth-backed color pictorial boards, printed dust jacket (a bit faded, extremities lightly worn). Bookplate. Second edition of this Czech translation of The Wind in the Willows by Míla Grimmichová originally published in 1933. Interestingly, the verses scattered through Grahame’s text were translated by Jaroslav Seifert, the 1984 Nobel Prize winner. Josef Capek’s delightful pictures had appeared in the first edition; our version was published the same year he died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (he had spent the war in various Nazi prisons). The artist’s brother Karel Capek is famous for inventing the word “robot” (used in his 1921 play “R.U.R.”), but he in fact credited Josef with its creation. Quite uncommon, especially in dust jacket.       Vollständige Ausgabe in 2 Original-Verlags-Handeinbänden der Zeit: feingenarbtes Ganzleder / GLdr / Leder im Format 16 x 21,5 cm mit Rückentitel und Deckel-Liniendekoration in Goldprägung sowie Kopfgoldschnitt, beide Bände mit jeweils ganzseitiger Frontispiz-Fotoabbildung "Der Schirmherr des Hauses der Deutschen Kunst Adolf Hitler." Band 1 mit 143 (Text) + 72 (Abbildungen) Seiten, Band 2 mit 168 (Text) + 64 (Abbildungen) Seiten, die Fotoabbildungen jeweils auf Kunstdruckpapier, mit Verzeichnissen der ausgestellten Werke (Architektur, kunsthandwerkliche Gegenstände) und der Aussteller von kunsthandwerklichen Gegenständen (Adler / Berchtesgaden - Zwengauer Marie / München). - "Warum handgebunden?

Record of the Technical Companies of the 40th County of London (G.L.C.C.) Battalion, Home Guard. 1942 – 194

[London: , 1945]. [With:] Photographs of the Training and Operational Tasks carried out by the Technical Companies of the 40th County of London (G.L.C.C.) Battalion, Home Guard. 1942 – 1945. 2 volumes, folio and landscape folio. Original grey light card wrappers, ruled and lettered in black to front, volume 1 staple-bound, volume 2 with red cloth spine. 10 folding text-leaves printed on india paper; 17 mounted silver gelatin prints, of which 15 approx. 110 x 150 mm, and 2 of smaller dimensions. Text and prints rectos only. Volume 1 spine a little chipped, volume 2 wrappers slightly marked, extremities bumped, rear wrapper a little nicked and creased along top edge, inked number to margin of first leaf, light marginal toning to a few other leaves, the images never affected. Very good condition overall, the contents clean, the prints crisp and fresh. Fascinating mimeographed report on the Home Guard battalion formed by engineers from the Gas Light and Coke Company in 1942, with a volume of fine photographs. Rare, with no other copy traced in libraries or in commerce, except an ambiguous reference in the National Archives at Kew. After repair work from the Blitz eased off in the autumn of 1941, company engineers sought special permission from the War Office to form a "mobile Royal Engineer platoon based at Ilford, in which capacity they could be available to undertake specialist engineer tasks, subject to the prior claims of Civil Defence" (Introduction). Authority was granted in January 1942 and units were formed at Ilford, Westminster, Pound Lane, Seven Sisters, Goswell Road, and Heston. The report comprises a diary of events, summaries of field works, training, and inspections, letters of commendation and details of awards and social events. The photographs depict inspections by Arthur Smith and Charles Lloyd (GOC London District 1942-4 and 1944-7 respectively), bridge construction over the Roding, a Sten gun range at Chiswick, the demolition of various strong points to clear Heathrow airfield, and plans "for work carried out at Becher Street, Kensington, to demonstrate methods of placing groups of houses in a state of defence". "From the very beginning industrial concerns made a considerable contribution to the growth of a voluntary movement Â… The reliance upon industry did bring difficulties even if urban units invariably had greater access to convenient premises Â… Many of the original factory units were not incorporated into local battalions initially but allowed to remain separate with the result that large numbers of men were not fully utilised in local defence plans: their only concern was the defence of their own premises. Similarly, the public utility battalions clearly faced something of a conflict of interest in the event of an emergency and were generally organised on a regional basis unsuited to any active participation in local defence. It was not long before most factory units were integrated into local defence schemes" (Beckett, The Amateur Military Tradition 1558-1945, pp. 278-9).

Original Watercolor Studies for 'A Little Fur Family'

n.p.: n.p., 1945. Fine. Two preliminary paintings for 'Little Fur Family' which was first published in 1946. On paper. Measures approx. 7 by 8½ inches, and each one has additional margin on one side, each with William's signature. While these are separate studies, they seem to be intended as a double spread or a cover as they flow together beautifully. The left hand image is a forest scene with waterfall, and the right image shows the Fur Family with the Little Fur Child playing with his red ball. The images are matted together to form a continuous picture in a mat 16 by 20 inches. Although not used in the first edition of the Little Fur Family, a similar scene was used in the later printings as the cover, after the fur had been discontinued. Images are fine and bright with strong signatures. Accompanied by a copy of a later edition showing the final artwork.
