        Best Film Plays of 1943-44

New York: Crown Publishers, 1945. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED on the front endpage "For Bill Hays With the hope that he writes a million of im, Lamar Trotti Sept.19, 1945" Screenwriter and producer Lamar Trotti wrote films in many different genres: westerns, such as The Ox-Bow Incident (1943); historical epics, such as Drums Along the Mohawk (1939) ; comedies, such as Cheaper by the Dozen (1950); war films, such as Guadalcanal Diary (1943) and A Bell for Adano (1945); musicals, such as Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938) and With a Song in My Heart (1952); and biographies, such as Young Mr. Lincoln and The Story of Alexander Graham Bell (both 1939). He won an Academy Award for his screenplay Wilson (1944), a biographical treatment of Woodrow Wilson's presidency, which is among the film plays in this book, along with his afore-mentioned The Ox-Bow Incident. Trotti's films were commercially and critically successful; they are seen often on television, and they are studied as classics in film schools across the country. Bill Hays was the son of Will H. Hays, most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies, Hays installed a more formal production code, called the Hays Code( later simply "The Code"), which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. This book also contains the first printing of the Humphrey Bogart - Ingrid Bergman classic, Casablanca, two Preston Sturges scripts Hail the Conquering Hero and The Miracle of Morgans Creek, as well as Watch On the Rhine, Going My Way, Dragon Seed, and The More the Merrier. Lacking the dustjacket, the book is Very Good, spine faded but titles still legible, page block separating at head of spine, A unique piece of Hollywood film history, tieing together a screenwriter with the man Hollywood feared the most ! Inscriptions by Trotti are RARE. Bill Hays (Will Hays Jr.) did go on to become an author, writing 2 novels and Come Home With Me Now.The Untold Story of Movie Czar Will Hays By His Son.         HARRY SECOMBE & SPIKE MILLIGAN Important SIGNED MANUSCRIPT Programme for "OVER THE PAGE" Variety Show in Naples Italy December 1945 Fully Signed by all the Shows Performers, Over 50 Autographs, Pre "THE GOON SHOW", HISTORY and Signed Letters Album Photog

Original Manuscript, Naples Italy 1945 - This is an important archive of Manuscript material relating to Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan and their pre-The Goon Show history, Spike and Harry famously met during the Second World War, with a very funny first encounter involving a runaway Howitzer Gun in North Africa, then later just after the end of the War in 1945, but before demobilisation Harry joined a Variety Show in Naples Italy called "Over the Page", as a Comedian and Impressionist, and as a Singer, also on the Bill was the "Bill Hall Trio", a Musical Comedy act featuring Bill Hall on Violin, Johnny Mulgrew on Double Bass and Spike Milligan on Guitar, a hand written program was produced for the show, which was presumably later copied and printed for audience members. Included in this archive is THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT HAND WRITTEN AND PAINTED PROGRAMME FOR THE SHOW FULLY SIGNED BY ALL THE CAST MEMBERS WELL OVER FIFTY SIGNATURES, each member of the cast signing their name under the act they appeared in. Harry Secombe appeared in three spots in the show and his signature appears three times, the Bill Hall Trio appeared last on the bill, and they have signed their names, including of course Spike Milligan, The Orchestra appeared first on the Bill with all eleven members signing their name including Johnny Mulgrew of "The Bill Hall Trio", who was playing his Bass in the Orchestra as well, other acts include Bob Wayne with his Hat and Cane, The Egyptian Sand Dance and Somersaults by Bob Hutchinson and Bill !! Light Comedy by Kenneth B. Lovell, and more, also loosely inserted in the program is a piece of paper with a hand written list of the acts in order of appearance from a later performance on 11th February 1946, the main Manuscript Programme is dated December 1945 Naples Italy, for many years the manuscript of the programme was in the hands of Kenneth Lovell who appeared in the show with an act called "The Silent Man with Silly Fingers", and included in the archive is an original letter sent on 31st May 1954 from Harry Secombe to Kenneth thanking him for the offer of accommodation at his home while he was on tour in England, and mentioning the recent birth of his son Andrew. After Kenneth's death, the original programme and posters for the show came into the hands of a Norman Haynes, and in 1992 he sent the posters and programme to Harry Secombe to look at, they let Harry keep the original posters for the show which they didn't want any payment for, and in return Sir Harry sent Norman and his wife a Signed Copy of his Autobiography, a Signed Photograph, and a Signed Copy of his latest Album, returning the programme as well, these items are included in the Archive along with the three Letters of Correspondence and a Compliments Slip from Sir Harry, The Autobiography also gives Harry's account of the "Over The Page" show and early meetings with Spike Milligan, soon after the appearance in the show they started a Comedy Act together, and the rest is history as we say . A VERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF PRE-GOONS HISTORY DATING TO THE VERY BEGINNINGS OF THE SHOW BUSINESS CAREERS OF HARRY SECOMBE AND SPIKE MILLIGAN. THE MANUSCRIPT PROGRAMME FOR "OVER THE PAGE" IS A UNIQUE AND VERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF BRITISH COMEDY HISTORY. the Archive includes the 1945 Manuscript Signed Programme for the "Over the Page Show" signed by Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan, along with all the other cast members, over fifty signatures in all, the Hand Written list of the Shows itinerary for a production of the show on 11th February 1946, A 1954 signed Letter from Harry Secombe to Kenneth Lovell, Three Signed Letters from Harry Secombe in 1992 about the programme and posters for the show, a Signed Copy of Harry Secombe's Autobiography, A Signed Colour Photograph from Harry Secombe, A Signed copy of Harry Secombe's 1991 Album "Yours Sincerely Harry Secombe", and a Printed Compliment Slip from Sir Harry Secombe, CBE. , some creasing to the photo, and edge bumps to the album cover and books dustjacket, [Attributes: First Edition]

Schatzkammer der Schreibkunst: Meisterwerke der Kalligraphie aus vier Jahrhunderten auf Zweihundert Tafeln

Basel: Verlag Birkhäuser, 1945. First edition of this "treasury" of plates showcasing four hundred years of calligraphy, a presentation copy from editor Jan Tschichold, one of the most influential typographers of the twentieth century. The son of a Leipzig sign painter, Tschichold developed his fascination with letterforms at an early age; before he was twenty, he had studied "calligraphy, engraving, etching, wood engraving, and bookbinding" (Rosen). His calligraphic training set Tschichold apart from most modern graphic designers. He compiled the Schatzkammer as a source book and teaching tool when he was a designer at Birkhäuser in Basel, just before he moved to England, where he pioneered Penguin's iconic postwar paperback design. Featured calligraphers include Giambattista Palatino in sixteenth-century Rome, Jan van den Velde in seventeenth-century Rotterdam, George Bickham in eighteenth-century London, and Ramón Stirling in nineteenth-century Barcelona. This copy is inscribed by Tschichold to the artist Sabine Klemke (later Sabine Kahane), the daughter of Tschichold's biographer and fellow book designer Werner Klemke. Sabine Klemke followed her father into book illustration, and studied under Tschichold. Text in German. A fine copy of a compelling reference, handsomely bound, with an excellent typographical association. Oblong quarto, twentieth-century full vellum, title and author calligraphically hand-lettered in black and red on front board and spine, top edge stained red. Introduction by Jan Tschichold, followed by 199 photographic reproductions of calligraphy from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. Pencil presentation inscription to verso of title page: "Für Sabine Klemke / von / Jan Tschichold / 1967." Touch of offsetting and foxing to endpapers, corner of page 11 clipped, occasional stray mark to text.

Plakat - Gesellschaft Schweiz-Sowjetunion.

Versand D: 20,00 EUR Plakate - Politik

Soviet propanda poster - Great Patriotic War, TASS, 1945.

Soviet propanda poster - TO THE HEROES OF THE SKY!Template painted poster (nr. TASS 1288) after the design by A. Plotnov, made in (August?) 1945.Officers watching air display and parachute landings"Glory to the masters of the high sky,To the brave commanders of military exploits:To the valiant pilots, Stalin"s falconsTo the proud heroes, to the soldierconquerors."'Author: A. Zharov. Artist: A. Plotnov. Dimensions: 159 x 86,5 cm.The major role in Soviet poster art in the war was played by the TASS Windows. They were large, brightly coloured, hand-painted posters, stencilled and produced in runs of up to 1000 copies. They usually were accompanied by a didactic text or often quite lengthy poem. They were the direct descendants of the comparable ROSTA Windows of the Civil War period, so-called because they were displayed in the empty shop-windows of that period. Like ROSTA, TASS was the official Soviet telegraphic agency of the day, and the purpose of the association of this propaganda effort with the agency was both to provide a continuing visual chronicle of the war and to respond immediately, often within hours to the latest telegrams of TASS. M M Chermnykh, who had initiated the ROSTA Windows, also took the lead in the 1941 project. On 24 June the organisational committee of the Union of Soviet Artists established the TASS Window collective and the first poster appeared already on 27 June 1941. The Windows were numbered through to no. 1485 in June 1945. About 1250 were made in the original manner with stencils during the war itself. The theme and the text of each TASS Window were agreed with the leader of the collective, and ultimately with the agreement of TASS. TASS was the official news agency for dissemination of Soviet news abroad and for reception of news from abroad and consequently was strictly controlled by the Party. Most posters were completed and reproduced within 24 hours, the team working in three shifts. After the artist had completed the drawing and painting of the illustration, the poster was cut up into sections and stencils were cut out appropriate to each colour used in the composition. The most elaborate posters used up to 60 stencils. The stencils were then passed to the copy room where each section was copied on a lithographic machine in waterproof oil colours, initially in very few copies but eventually in up to 1000 copies. When all the colours had been applied to each stencilled section, they had to be glued together to make the completed poster and the text was added in a separate operation. The Hallward Library of the University of Nottingham holds a large collection of TASS Posters.         FDR’s Blue Glass Sailboat Water Tumbler

NY/Hyde Park/Campobello, pre 1945. "Blue Glass Water Tumbler depicting three sailboats and 12 seagulls in white. Originally lot 766 in the November 12 to December 3, 1951 Sale at Hammer Galleries in New York City of “Miscellaneous Objects Belonging to the late President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt.” Fine condition. From the FDR Library website: “FDR was always interested in ships and sailing. ‘I love to be on the water,’ he said. Although his love of the sea came from his Delano ancestors who were seafarers, it was his father who taught him how to handle the Half-Moon, the family sailboat, on trips up the Hudson River and in the Bay of Fundy near their Campobello Island summer home. At the age of sixteen, he had his own twenty-one foot knockabout, the New Moon.”Height 3.25”, diameter at base 2.25”, diameter at opening almost 3”. Catalogue description: “766. 12 Tumblers matching #765.” Catalogue description: “765. 14 Blue glass water tumblers, sailboat.” From the catalog: “Affixed to each article is a label ... numbered to correspond with the catalog.” Affixed to the bottom of the tumbler is the circular label, “Collection of President & Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt,” numbered “766” in ink. The circular label also has a “B-127” ink notation. From a letter to Mr. Hammer of Hammer Galleries from Eleanor Roosevelt dated October 25, 1951: “The items which we have consigned to you for sale are all belongings which my husband and I had in our various houses over the years; but, as you know, in this present day one is not able to operate the large households which were part of a bygone era. Inasmuch as we no longer have our house in New York or the large one in Hyde Park, and because we have found it necessary to close down our summer home in Campobello, we have no room for these items. So it is my hope that others will be able to find enjoyment in the possession of these things which have given much enjoyment to my husband, myself and the members of my family.”Photocopies of the appropriate pages of the catalog, including Mrs. Roosevelt’s letter, are present."

Photograph Album Documenting the Initial Occupation of Nagasaki Following the Japanese Surrender in World War II

Japan, 1945. Photograph Album. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. The album measures 12" x 15" and contains 56 pages with over 275 corner-mounted, captioned photographs, most of which are 4.5" x 3.25". Six Japanese newspapers are attached to pages at the back of the album and a number of news clippings are laid in. The album and contents are in nice shape. Cowan's family removed his name from the front cover, but it appears in ink inside the front cover and in one of the newspapers. This is an important visual record of the initial occupation of Nagasaki, Isahaya, Kumamoto, and Sasebo by the 2nd Marine Division. The photos begin with embarkation at Garapan Harbor in Saipan and continue with in route convoy images including destroyed and abandoned Japanese ships, and the remains of the Mitsuibishi Shipbuilding Company at Nagasaki harbor. The Nagasaki photos show the destruction caused by the atomic bomb, Japanese soldiers and policemen still in uniform, ragged children, as well as intact buildings including the train station, prison, and street scenes. There are also five photographs of the 1st Bn, 8th Marines at Isahaya Airfield and a number of abandoned Japanese airplanes. The album continues with images of Kumamoto where Catrow was assigned to a Military Police Company. They include more pictures of uniformed Japanese soldiers, unit buildings, inspections, barracks life, and a number of photographs of many civilians engaged in their daily lives. Catrow's unit departed from Sasebo where his photographs concentrate primarily on the harbor and include a damaged Japanese destroyer and U. S. vessels. He has numerous images of the voyage to the United States including a wrestling match, signing Christmas carols, and bunkmates. His arrival at San Diego is well documented as is his temporary stay at Camp Pendleton awaiting discharge. The five newspapers (The Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimsun) mounted at the back of the album are from November 1945 include photographic images taken by Catrow. A tissue copy translation of one of the articles notes that "Catrow-San . . . keeps a sharp eye on the city as he patrols on his jeep, but he casts another 'cultural eye' on what happens around him." Indeed, Catrow was a talented amateur photographer and his album provides unique and historically valuable record of the occupation of Japan following its surrender after the destruction of Nagasaki.

Leaf by Niggle (Short Story) In a complete issue of Dublin Review, January 1945

Burns, Oates & Washbourne, Birmingham & Dublin, 1945. First Edition. Fine Condition. This is the very rare Tolkien short story, contained in a complete issue of the Dublin Review where it was first published. This edition precedes the later reprint published in Tree and Leaf. It is often described as providing the underpinnings of Tolkien's writings, helping to create his religious philosophy which is for example reflected in the creation of Orcs and Dwarfs by Valas, together with a suggestion that it is an autobiographical allegorical tale based on the writer's own characteristics, though he himself preferred to believe it a mythical tale. The 16 page story (pp46-61) is contained in a whole 96 page issue of the Dublin Review for January 1945 (issue number 432). Original publishers green printed wrappers, which are in excellent condition, with only minimal age wear, no creasing, chipping or losses. Small ink stamp to head of front cover (see picture). pp59/60 has a small defect to the paper, without loss of text (see picture). Wrappers and paper are bright and clean throughout. Quite probably the rarest of all Tolkien's publications, the print run of the Dublin Review has not been established, but it is likely to be just one or two thousand copies, many of which will not have survived, or at best have been crudely rebound by institutions. Very unusual to find in the original wrappers and in such outstanding condition. See photographs for details. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Britain/UK; 1940s; Literature & Literary. Inventory No: 199963. .

A day before the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, George Patton signs an original drawing rendered by an admirer - with his signed letter of enclosure

Drawing bears some light toning from prior matting, minor marginal wear, mounted to a slightly larger sheet; save for a small paperclip mark at the top, the letter is in very fine condition.Patton's letter of enclosure reads, in full: ""I am returning your pencil sketch duly autographed. I very much appreciate your good wishes""A lovely pair of Patton signed items that would make for a terrific display."

Raskens. En soldatfamiljs historia. I (av II).

Stockholm; Bonniers, 1945. (Romaner i folkupplaga). 19,5x12,5 cm. 240 s.

Original stitched cream wrappers, titles red and black and multicoloured decoration to front cover. With the glassine jacket. An exceptional copy. First edition, signed limited issue. This is copy number 1, the only copy in the edition printed on Imperial Japon paper, the tête-de-tirage. The whole edition consisted of 49 copies, of which 40 were printed on vélin, 8 on Vélin Chiffon Bleu, and one (the present copy) on japon imperial. The pamphlet was printed in memory of Saint-Exupéry, whose plane had disappeared off the coast of Marseilles on 31 June 1944, and is a short hitherto unpublished account by Saint-Exupéry of his crash on 30 December 1935, when he and his navigator André Prévot were stranded in the Saharan desert for four days near the Nile Delta until they were rescued by a Bedouin. Saint-Exupéry referred to the episode in his autobiographical work Terre des Hommes (Wind, Sand, and Stars in the US), which won him the Grand Prix du Roman de L'Académie française in 1939, and the National Book Award in America. The opening of Le Petit Prince was in part a reference to this experience. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1945. First edition, ASSOCIATION COPY WARMLY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT FROST TO A FRIEND AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY, SIGNED AND DATED 1945 in the year of publication. 8vo, publisher’s original navy blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket. [6], 23, [1 blank] pp. A fine copy, the book wonderfully preserved, the navy cloth near pristine, the jacket with only very slight age mellowing and a small chip at tip of the spine. FIRST EDITION AND A FINE AND PLEASING SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed by Frost to Virginia Proctor, secretary to Harvard President James Byrant Conant. Though Frost tenure at Harvard was short, his friendship with Mrs. Proctor lasted well beyond his years in Cambridge. It was President Conant who first cited Frost as "The Poet of New England" when Frost was given an honorary degree of Litt.D. in 1937. In 1938 Frost resigned from Amherst and was elected to Harvard's Board of Overseers and that year also saw him placed in the English department at the university. Conant reappointed Frost for the years 1939 through 1942. Though Frost's formal ties with Harvard would end in that year, his association with Virginia Proctor would continue for years following. The inscription on this 1945 publication reads, "To Virginia Proctor / For all her kindness and friendship / Robert Frost / Bread Loaf (VT.) 1945" FIRST EDITION. Published on the occasion of Frost 70th birthday this poem in the form of a verse play was such an extreme departure from Frost’s earlier forms and style that it startled many of his devoted readers. They may have found a challenge in his change of thought and theme, but no loss in the intensity of his feeling or the mastery of his technique.

A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (some marking to the upper portion of the front board, some spotting and soiling to the rear board, some age toning to the cloth edges, front board's upper right corner bumped), in a Very Good dust jacket (sunning to the spine panel, light edge wear with some tiny chips and tears), CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED, PLACED AND DATED BY THOMAS MANN on the front free endpaper as follows: "To Sidney Phillips / Whom I was able to assist, / in my modest way, in the / creation of this beautiful book // Pacif. Palisades // Dec. 8 - 1945 // Thomas Mann. [underscored]"; a collection of Dostoevsky short novels including "The Gambler", "Notes from Underground" (a work which many believe marks the beginning of the modernist movement in literature), "Uncle's Dream", "The Eternal Husband", "The Double", and "The Friend of the Family"." In his Introduction (titled as a "Preface") Mann states, among many other interesting things, that "[i]f Dostoevsky had written nothing else but the six short novels printed here, his name would no doubt still deserve a pre-eminent place in the history of the world's narrative literature." Thomas Mann won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature "principally for his great novel, Buddenbrooks, which has won steadily increased recognition as one of the classic works of contemporary literature". Sidney Phillips was an employee and stockholder of Dial Press. A Very Good copy of this notable collection of Dostoevsky works, with an introduction by Thomas Mann, a volume thus joining two great men of Literature. A Very Good ASSOCIATION copy, CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED, INSCRIBED, DATED, AND PLACED BY THOMAS MANN. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.
