Skuggorna. Fragment ur ett händelseförlopp på ännu okänd tid och plats. 15 originallitografier.

Stockholm, 1945/1946. Suite of 15 original lithographs, each one in passe-partout and mounted on thick card. The leaves measure 30x22,5 cm, and are signed by the artist and numbered 41/100. Housed in the original printed linen box. There is an extra unnumbered lithograph, called "Aurum", which is probably intended as a title plate. Some of the passe-partouts are a bit toned, and a few cards have a slightly bumped corner. The plates are all fine. Laid-in is a 4-page leaflet with a text about the plates, and with a list of their titles. On back of this leaflet is stated that the plates were printed in 200 copies each, but the plates of all known copies are only numbered up to 100. The title of this work is "The Shadows. Fragments from a chain of events in a yet unknown time and place. 15 original lithographs", and it tells the story of a Spanish woman's sufferings and her final death, which seems to be inspired partly by World War II, and partly by the Spanish Inquisition.

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

"Osvobozhdennaia" ("Liberated") and "Fotokartochka" ("The photograph"). In: Leningrad: literaturno-khudozhestvennyi zhurnal, vol. IV, no. 3

Leningrad: Leningradskoe Otdelenie Soiuza Sovetskikh Pisatelei, 1945. Quarto (28.7 × 21.9 cm). Original decorative wrappers; 16 pp. Illustrated with a full-page drawing by A. A. Kazantsev, photographs, and reproductions of work by A. Pakhomov A. Samokhvalov, T. Shishmareva, and S. Iudovin. Very good. First appearance in print of a short poem by Akhmatova, "Osvobozhdennaia" ("Liberated"), and a short comic story by Mikhail Zoshchenko, both in the February 1945 issue of the journal "Leningrad," published from 1942 to 1946 by the Leningrad branch of the Soviet Writers' Union. During World War II, Akhmatova's poetry experienced a brief revival, after being banned between 1922-1940 for its ostensibly decadent, socially irrelevant character. Famously, she also became the voice of besieged Leningrad after appearing in special radio broadcasts during the German Blockade of 1941-1944. However, this rehabilitation saw a swift end in 1946, when Party functionary Andrei Zhdanov singled out Akhmatova's and Zoshchenko's publications in the journals 'Leningrad' and 'Zvezda': "A Leningrad journal has opened wide its pages to Akhmatova and given her full freedom to poison the minds of our youth with the pernicious spirit of her poetry" (in Poems of Akhmatova, ed. Stanley Kunitz and Max Hayward, p. 23). This report led to her expulsion from the Writers' Union and to unabated harassment by secret police. Akhmatova was unable to publish until the late Thaw period, with a selection of poems appearing in print in 1958. Zhdanov also singled out the satirist Mikhail Zoshchenko as a "literary swindler," plunging the once extremely popular writer into years of dire poverty.

        David Ben-Gurion

September 4 1945. Historic printed document, one page, 4½" x 7", September 4, 1945, imprinted Ministry of Food National Registration", London, England, accomplished by hand <i>"To David Ben-Gurion, 76 Chatsworth Road"</i>. Fine condition.<div><br></div><div>The text reads: <i>"Referring to your recent notification of removal to this area I am directed by the Registrar General to request you to forward your identity card and Aliens' Registration Certificate to this Office in the enclosed registered envelope for inspection. This letter will cover you against any demand for the production of these documents during the time they are not in your possession"</i>.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Ben-Gurion encouraged Jews to join the British military at the same time he helped orchestrate the illegal immigration of thousands of European Jewish refugees to Palestine at a time when the British sought to bar new Jewish immigration. He is also considered the architect of both the Federation of Jewish Labor, the Histadrut which created a Jewish state within the British state and the Haganah, the paramilitary force of the Labor Zionist movement that facilitated underground immigration, defended kibbutzim and other Jewish settlements against attack and provided the backbone of the future Israeli Defense Forces. Both of these developments put pressure on the British to either grant the Jews a state in Palestine or quit the League of Nations Mandate - they did the latter in 1947 on the heels of a United Nations resolution partitioning the territory between the Jews and Arabs. A unique document worthy of further research.&nbsp;</div>

[PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF ORIGINAL IMAGES, RECORDING AMERICAN SCENES AND EXPERIENCES IN OCCUPIED JAPAN JUST AFTER WORLD WAR II]

[Various locations in Japan, 1945. 124 silver gelatin photographs, mostly 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches, 106 of them in corner mounts. Contemporary blue cloth photograph album. Moderate edge wear and rubbing. Photos in generally nice shape. Very good. A fascinating vernacular photograph album capturing scenes in American-occupied Japan just after the Second World War. Most of the photographs are captioned in white ink on the black album pages, and organized in sections such as "Landmarks," "The People," "The Cities," "The Military," and "Personalities." "Landmarks" include views of sites in Kokura, Yakata, Okayma Prefecture, picturing shrines, country homes, water works, the "International Military Tribunal Far East," and more. "The People" shows Japanese residents of all ages, some in Western dress, others in traditional Japanese garb, standing in front of structures, on the streets, at a military checkpoint, playing "yakkyu national game" [baseball], swimming, and other activities. The section on the cities comprises street views in Okayama, Kokura, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Yakata, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Yokohama. Surprisingly, the four shots of Hiroshima do not contain much evidence of destruction, and provide a rare, contemporary glimpse of areas of the city not leveled by Little Boy. Views of Tokyo include the Dai Ichi Building, the Imperial Museum, and an image of an American soldier "on the Ginza." The various views in the other cities show Japan's largest steel works, a partially-demolished department store, temples, and the Yokohama wharf. The military section includes photographs of Okayama Post, the "A.G. Office," barracks, headquarters of the 24th Division in Kokura, Kyushu, the Kokura Arsenal and Post Exchange, Fukuoka's 118 Station Hospital, and more. The "Personalities" section is comprised of shots of American soldiers in and out of uniform, almost all of them identified by their first names or nicknames. This section also includes photographs of "A.G. Girls," a few Japanese people identified by name, American soldiers at the War Ministry Hotel in Tokyo, U.S. soldiers at the "4th Repl. Depot" in Sobudai," and more. A handful of the captions, and some of the loose photographs, are captioned in Japanese. Some of the loose photographs are stamped on the verso "Jack Woytych" with his Wisconsin address, though it is unclear whether this refers to the owner/photographer of the album or the printer of the photographs. Most of the loose photos emanate from Okayama. A noteworthy collection of personal images from an American serving in Japan at the end of World War II.

Een Oorlog trok over Rotterdam / A War Drew Over Rotterdam 10-14 Mei 1940 A photographic record of the Blitz of Rotterdam.

A wonderful photographic tribute to the people of Rotterdam. This leather-bound album contains over 140 original photographs of Rotterdam before, during, and after the German blitz bombing of the 14th May 1940. Full green leather with the crest of the city of Rotterdam to the front cover. A frontis photograph shows a memorial to the fallen of the blitz. This would seem to place this photograph in circa 1945 - but despite finding postcards and online images, this would seem to have been a temporary memorial pending a permanent one. A title page, shows a ruined church - with the title 'Een oorlog trok over Rotterdam 10-14 Mei 1940.' (all titles and ornamentation has been done with a dark graphite pencil). There are then several large photographs of the docks before the war. The last of these is a beautiful shot of the bridge with the imposing Witte building across the Maas. The following large photograph shows the Witte building standing amidst the smoke and flames, whilst the buildings around it are consumed by fire. A further 15 smaller photographs show smoke and burning buildings throughout the city. Three fascinating photographs follow. The first shows the SS Statendam before the war - following by the flagship ablaze, and finally as a burnt out hulk. The Statendam had the misfortune to be docked in the port when the Germans invaded. They occupied it and set up guns upon it during the invasion, and during a firefight with the Dutch army, it caught fire and was destroyed. The rest of the photographs show buildings, streets and churches before and after the blitz. The photographer was obviously a keen architectural photographer at the time Most of the photographs show a 'before and after' Nearly always from the same point and angle. It seems that after the blitz, he re-visited his previous subjects, to give the two perspectives and to make a unique record. Towards the end of the volume, are a small number of photographs showing the clear up of the damage and debris (including an 'action shot' of one building caught in the act of falling). This is a wonderful and unique documentary record of the blitz of Rotterdam. 139 original photographs (plus another few loose in an envelope). These are in three sizes. Large - (24cm W X 18cm H), Medium (17 cm W X 10cm H) and small (14cm W X 8cm H). Most are large or medium. The album itself is 35cm H x 25cm W.The Germans invaded the Netherlands on the 10th May 1940. Following fierce resistance within Rotterdam, they were unable to secure the centre of the city. Despite giving time for an ultimatum prior to a surrender, at 13.20 on the 14th May, a blitz of the residential parts of the city began. 117 bombers destroyed 25,000 buildings, and almost 900 people were killed.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Funeral ("FDR Funeral 1945") signed by the photographer Ed Clark

Signed and inscribed by the photographer: "FDR Funeral 1945, Edward Clark - Life." Famed Life photographer Edward Clark took this celebrated picture in 1945 at the funeral of Franklin D. Roosevelt in Atlanta. "The area was in front of the building at the polio clinic where Roosevelt had spent so much time, [Clark] saw Navy bandsman, CPO Graham Jackson, playing away on his accordion while tears streamed down his face" (Clark, Decades). "Ed Clark's photograph, meanwhile, of an openly weeping Chief Petty Officer (USN) Graham Jackson playing "Goin' Home" on his accordion as FDR's flag-draped casket passes by in April 1945 has, through the years, come to symbolize not merely a nation's grief, but black America's acknowledgement of Roosevelt's efforts on behalf of civil rights while he was in office" (Life website).         Genshi Bakudan].

      - Tokyo, Domei Tsushinsha September 1945. Octavo printed wrapper; 32pp including wrapper, untrimmed and loose (as issued?). Expected browning of the paper, a couple of corner creases and short tears to the spine. Published as Domei Sosho No.1 by Domei - the national news agency - on 20th September 1945, apparently the day before the US occupation censorship had time to be fully implemented. Domei Sosho no.2 was on the Potsdam declaration and there, I think, the series ended. I have read that 200,000 copies of this were printed. Worldcat locates no copies - though there are copies in perhaps nine Japanese libraries - and it doesn't appear in the catalogue of the Prange collection - the world's largest collection of occupation era documents, collected by the official historian to the occupation. There is nothing much to be found in English on Takeo or his pamphlet. As I can best figure, the story is that Takeo was a scientific and/or political correspondent for Domei and spoke English. He and a colleague listened in to allied broadcasts, translated Truman's statement on the bombing of Hiroshima and was the first to tell the Japanese government that the "new bomb" was an atomic bomb. Takeo's widow and son published a memorial book in 1995 with background and contemporary papers which doesn't seem to have worked its way to writers in English. From my stumbling through a review of that book I get the impression that Takeo was seen as an apologist for the US and their use of the bomb which was unfair. He was attempting to give as objectively as possible as much information as he could and what information he had came only from what could he could scrape together from radio broadcasts. How much of this view of him was long after the fact I don't know. He had been or became - I'm not clear on this - a communist journalist which can't have endeared him to any authorities. There is a modern facsimile of this which may or may not be related to the book published by Mrs Takeo - it seems likely. That should not be mistaken for this. Neither should Takeo Takei the journalist be confused with Takeo Takei the illustrator.
