Normandy Invasion D-Day Landing archive: Liberty Ship’s log, photograph album, and assorted ephemera

France and the United Kingdom, Primarily 1944. This collection of material was authored/compiled by a Signalman aboard the American Liberty Ship, S.S. William A. Jones. It contains a “Signal Log” kept by George A. Lille and William E. Mixon, a photograph album, General Eisenhower’s D-Day Letter, the transcript of the 5 May 1945 message announcing that although reports of a formal German surrender were premature, “Fuehrer Karl Donitz . . . read [an order] over the Flensburg Radio” that ended all offensive U-boat operations, a 1990s mimeograph guide and postcards from the Normandy invasion site, and a magazine clipping announcing the end of the Navy’s Signalman (SM) rating in 2003. All of the items are in nice shape. The front cover and first two leaves are little loose and have been reinforced with now-yellowed cello tape. Eisenhower’s invasion letter has folding creases and an ink annotation at the top margin reading, “June 6, 1944.” The photograph album (5” x 8”) contains 55 pages with 109 4.5” x 3.25” photographs of convoy operations, firing practice, and life aboard ship. The highlights are 29 images of the Normandy Invasion including the ship at anchor on D-Day +1, allied soldiers and equipment on board awaiting landing craft, warships off the coast, Sherman tanks being off-loaded and going ashore, tanks advancing up Gold beach, sunken vessels used as a breakwater, a ship laying smoke, etc. The signal log (5” x 8”) contains over 120 pages recording every signal sent or received by the Jones between 6 March and 7 September 1944 as well as 43 pages of narrative entries for the same dates. Highlights include: * June 7, 1944: Convoy left Southend 0545. 28 ships, speed 9 knots. . . . Destroyers laid smoke screen and Swordfish aircraft dropped smoke pots to shield convoy from enemy at 1015. Enemy shore batteries opened fire at convoy at 1028. One near miss. Convoy was off the White Cliffs of Dover. Air raid siren heard on shore and General Alarm was sounded at 1048; * June 8, 1944: Arrived at invasion coast 0700 waited for orders. Moved to discharging anchorage, dropped anchor 1500. Continuous barrage by allied warships throughout day; * June 9, 1944: Warships continue barrage. Air raids during which 2 planes were brought down. We fired starboard 20mm, also used smoke apparatus. Two landing craft that were lost in smoke tied alongside for night. General Quarters for air raid at 2305. Port 20 m.m.’s opened fire. All clear at 2403. No planes downed as seen from here; * [June 10, 1944]: Air raid warning received at 0510. All ships used smoke apparatus. . . . Three LCT’s alongside at 0945 to unload cargo. L.C.T.’s come alongside all day. Number 4 and 5 hatches are finished at 1700. Troops are leaving with lorries; * June 11, 1944: At 1145 the forword (sic) boom broke and fell into landing craft. A truck was on the boom. . . . One man was injured. . . . We moved to a new position at 1600 and dropped anchor at 1745. . . . Still in section “G”; * June 20, 1944: Through the Straits of Dover at 0230. They fired about 25 shells at us. One ship in the convoy was hit. Damage unknown; * June 23, 1944: One British L.C.T. came alongside at 1330 to start unloading. Landing craft alongside all afternoon. Underwent air raid. . . No damage but near misses; * June 25, 1944: Pilotless plane shot down by one of our gunners at 2046; * June 29, 1944: Three ships reported mined close by at 1532; * June 30, 1944: Two L.C.T.’s alongside at 0855. L.C.T.’s alongside all day; * July 13, 1944: 6 Depth charges dropped near our starboard bow at 1655; and * July 22-23, 1944: Underwent an air raid. Mine believed to have been dropped close to us. . . . Mine blown up by minesweeper. . . . Ship mined close on our port bow at 2115. Very scarce. As of 2016, no similar collections of D-Day naval material are in the trade, and neither ABPC of the Rare Book Hub contain any auction records. OCLC locates one institution holding a similar diary of the invasion, but no accompanying photographic record. This is a unique first-person record of one of the most significant events of the 20th century The William A. Jones was an active participant in the Normandy invasion. She left Firth-of-Forth, Scotland on June 6, 1944 transporting Canadian forces to Gold Beach. Following the initial invasion, the Jones returned to Britain and continued to shuttle forces to the beachhead until the end of July including elements of the British 43rd Wessex Division, which captured Mount Pincon, tying up two German panzer divisions and facilitated the breakout of the General Omar Bradley’s First United States Army which was then exploited by Lieutenant General George Patton’s newly formed Third United State Army.

        Typed letter signed, with envelope

1944 - HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Typed letter signed, with envelope. Paris: no date [July 21 stamped on envelope]. One sheet of typing paper, 8-1/2 by 11 inches, and original air mail envelope, matted and framed together; entire piece measures 14-1/2 by 23 inches. $18,500.Fascinating typed letter signed by Ernest Hemingway written while covering the Second World War in France as a war correspondent, to his friend and boxing trainer George Brown, discussing his severe head injury, subsequent effects of the concussion, and the D-Day landing. Other than for members of his own family, Brown was likely the only friend for whom Hemingway ever signed letters or books as "Ernie." Framed with the original air mail envelope addressed to Brown at his New York City gym, which Hemingway has inscribed in ink, "Ernest Hemingway, war correspondent."Undated letter listing Hemingway's address as "Ernest Hemingway, War Correspondent, PRO HQ ETOUSA, APO 887, c/o Postmaster New York, NY" reads in full: "Dear George: Have been very bad about not writing you pal but it is because am so damned busy all the time. First got conked on the head with that car going into the static water tank. That is a metal tank set in the road to hold reserve water in case of fires. It wasn't lighted and the driver hit it square and I went through the shatter-proof glass. Kept my head down and didn't even break my glasses but bunged up my good knee and one hand where I braced against it and and [sic] cut the head from above the left ear in a horse shoe shaped cut through that old scar and way back into the scalp straight back from that old scar. Doctor did a swell job; [f]ifty two stitches and there is no welt and it really does not look bad now the hair is grown out. But I lost about two quarts of blood and for a while thought might bleed out. I got out of the hospital four days after it happened by lying about no headache and feeling fine etc. but was awfully weak and wobbly. Had the last stitches out on the attack transport and the life there; no drinking; lots of good chow, salt air and finally lots of salt water on the head the day we went in with the assault boats cured it well. But if you would have seen me, with two bad legs going up and down those landing nets in the dark (we had to go over to another ship after lowering our own boats), you would have had a laugh. I couldn't do that landing net stuff in a heavy sea before I hurt my knees."After the landing, (have a piece on it in Colliers) came back here and wrote the story and since then have been attached to the R.A.F. and have had a chance to do quite a lot of flying. I like flying in the fast planes very much and often wonder why we used to pay out good money to hunt those animals in Africa when you can have this for nothing. Lately, though, my head doesn't feel good all of the time but I suppose that is natural after getting conked like that and not haveing a chance to rest and then workout and get in shape. But am surely grateful to you for putting me in shape so had a reserve to work on."Marty [Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway's third wife, who was also a writer and war correspondent] has gone to another front because on this front it it very hard for a woman correspondent to work."This is a wonderful town, rich and beautiful and I would like to be here some time in peace-time with lots of money. We will have to come over sometime."Take care of yourself kid and I can never thank you enough for how good you were to me. xxxxxx Bumby is okay. Heard from him a couple of weeks ago. The kids are at Cataloochee Ranch, Waynesville, North Carolina. You might write them you heard from me in case they do not get my letters. I wrote them to Key West and again to the ranch but I gave the letter to Marty to mail and more than likely she forgot the hell about it."If you read the piece in Colliers you will have pretty good idea about how it was going in to the beaches. Have some good stories to tell you when we get together again."Could. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Photograph album. WITH: Photographs of Abraham Lincoln

1944 - (LINCOLN, Abraham) MESERVE, Frederick Hill. Photograph album. WITH: Photographs of Abraham Lincoln. No place, no date; New York: Harcourt Brace, 1944. Loose album sheets (9 by 12 inches) featuring 191 photographic images. Housed in a cloth four-fold portfolio binder. WITH: Octavo, original navy cloth, original dust jacket. $22,000.Extraordinary album comprising over 191 photographs, primarily silver and platinum prints, of Abraham Lincoln, his family, and contemporaries assembled by Frederick Meserve. Accompanied by the first trade edition of Meserve's landmark work, accomplished in collaboration with Carl Sandburg, Photographs of Abraham Lincoln, featuring 100 images of the 16th President, in daguerreotypes, cartes-de-visite, stereoviews, and more by photographers including Matthew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and Alexander Hesler.Photographer "Frederick Hill Meserve was an important collector of Lincoln photographs. Sandburg asserts". that 'it is quite probable that certain Lincoln photographs would not have come to light but for Meserve'" (University of Illinois). This unbound photograph album appears to confirm that assertion. In 191 photographs, some of which bear penciled identification in Meserve's hand, Meserve carefully creates a tableau of Lincoln's life in portraiture, capturing both Lincoln and his social circle""the friends, acquaintances, political figures, and social reformers who shaped him. The photographs, primarily silver and platinum prints, each measure 2-1/4 by 3-1/2 inches, and are inserted into double-sided loose album pages, which are housed in a cloth portfolio. The first portion of the album, hand-numbered from 1-100 in pencil, featured 94 portraits of Lincoln arranged chronologically. The subsequent pages house an additional 91 images, which include additional portraits of Lincoln, as well as Mary Todd Lincoln, Robert Todd Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth, John Brown, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Stephen Douglas, Jefferson Davis, General Grant, General Sherman, President Hayes, and many other luminaries of the period. The purpose of the album is unclear, but it may have served as a working set of prints used by Meserve as he prepared the first volume of Photographs of Abraham Lincoln for publication. In 1911, Frederick Hill Meserve privately published his landmark work, Photographs of Abraham Lincoln, featuring 100 photographs of the 16th President that he had collected over many years including daguerreotypes, cartes-de-visite, stereoviews, and other formats by photographers such as Matthew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and Alexander Hesler. Meserve published additional volumes over the ensuing years featuring other portraits of Lincoln and his associates, an endeavor that coincided with the growth of his personal photograph collection, which grew to over 70,000 pieces. It was only recently acquired by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale. This trade edition of Photographs of Abraham Lincoln is preceded by numerous privately printed editions and privately printed supplements that commenced publication in 1911. Album extremely good, with mild toning to page edges and a few corners torn, some photographs lightly silvered. An exceptional photographic archive. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Eigenh. Brief mit U. Kirchstetten, 21. XII. 1944.

Boston: The Horn Book, Inc., 1944 - Small quarto. Original brown and white cloth, titles to front cover red, pictorial label to front cover, red patterned endpapers, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom white cloth folding case. A fine copy in the jacket with a couple of shallow chips to extremities and short closed tear to front panel. Portrait frontispiece and woodcut decorations by J. J. Lankes. First edition in book form, first printing. A limited edition of 100 copies was published in the UK, likely simultaneously, though the exact date is unknown. Potter originally conceived the story "as a pendant to The Tailor of Gloucester – the lonely old man and the lonely old woman, but I could never finish it." It was first written in 1909 under the title "The Little Black Kettle". Potter picked up the unfinished story again in 1929 and rewrote it, intending it as part of Fairy Caravan, but the story was not included in the final text. In 1940, editor Bertha Mahony Miller asked for a story to print in the Horn Book Magazine and Potter set to re-writing the story yet again. Miller was so pleased with the story she decided to hold it for their 20th anniversary edition, where it was finally published in May 1944. Beatrix Potter had died in December 1943, aged 77, and never saw it published. Linder, p. 432; Quinby 32. [Attributes: First Edition]

Reinhard Heydrich. Ein Leben der Tat

Prag, Volk und Reich Verlag, 1944. (noch zu Nr.22640:) . . . Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings - SIGNED SCORE & PROGRAM

Boosey & Hawkes, London 1944 - Miniature score to the important English composer's Serenade, op. 31, signed on the title page by both Britten and Peter Pears, his lifelong companion and the tenor who first performed the work. Dated May 1954 with an ownership signature on the inside front cover. [PN] 8934. 38 pp. Some light overall toning, but otherwise in fine condition. 5.5 x 7.5 inches (13.5 x 18.7 cm). Together with an original program from a 1955 performance of Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings with Peter Pears and horn player Dennis Brain, for whom the piece was composed in 1943. The program, with the Scottish National Orchestra under Karl Rankl, also included Mozart's Horn Concerto no. 3, Mozart arias, and Beethoven's Symphony no. 8. Dated January 21, 1955. A few small scuffs; overall in fine condition. 15 pp. 5.5 x 8.5 inches (13.8 x 21.5 cm)."There was a lull in Britten's flow of composition around this time [1942-50], owing partly to a serious attack of measles for which he was in hospital and then off work in March and April 1943. Several projects were abandoned, but during the months he was resting he composed, at Snape, the Serenade for tenor, horn and strings. In this work he invented his own kind of shadowed pastoralism, not the ideal England of the folksong composers but a place in which the worm finds the bud and a darker side of medieval experience is explored (in the Lyke Wake Dirge); the high ostinato that is also the strophic vocal line enabled a particularly fruitful orchestral dialogue to suggest deeper levels to this poem."

AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED together with a carbon copy of a WORLD WAR TWO TYPED LETTER OF COMMENDATION SIGNED in INK by COLONEL BRUCE C. CLARKE, who was later promoted to General.

Headquarters Combat Command "A", Fourth Armoved Division, October 12th & 17th, 1944.. 1944.. Very good. - A 2-page letter of commendation densely typed in carbon on two 10-5/8 inch high by 8 inch wide sheets of onion skin paper. Annotated as a "Memo", the letter is addressed to "All units that have served with CC "A" during period 31 July 44 to date", Colonel Bruce C. Clarke writes that "Upon this headquarters reverting to support status today, after 75 consecutive days in the command of troops in the front, I wish to express to the officers and men of the units it has been my privilege to command in battle my appreciation for a good job well done. You have accomplished seemingly impossible missions and have made history of which you and yours and our Nation are and will be proud...." Colonel Clarke goes on to elaborately detail 9 particular battles where the 4th Armored Division has distinguished itself, the first being a "Move through Avranches at 1500, 31 July and the breaking out in four columns with tanks leading and by midnight the capture of 4 bridges and dams across the Duay River which made possible the pouring through of the Third Army for the Brest Peninsula Campaign". He goes on to list several events including "The move to and taking of Troyes by a combined direct and encircling attack against 3000 Germans 25 August. The assault on the city led by Lt. Col. West, using tanks and armored infantry in close formation, was a classic example of the close cooperation of Tanks and Infantry". He goes on to relate the establishment of the Nancy Bridgehead following the crossing of the Moselle onf August 13th, describing that "Holding the ground gained required the fighting of the greatest Tank vs Tank Battles of this war wherein Lt. Col. Abrams and the 37th Tank Bn and Co 'C' of the 704 TD particularly distinguished themselves...." He concludes with a list of substantial enemy losses compared to the comparatively small losses suffered by American troops. Signed "Bruce C. Clarke" in ink at the bottom of the second page. <p>An AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED by BRUCE C. CLARKE is stapled to the top of the letter. The note, penciled on a 6 inch high by 4 inch wide sheet of "Fourth Armored Division, Headquarters Combat Command" memorandum stationery personalized with "Bruce C. Clarke / Colonel, Corps of Engineers, Commanding" printed at the bottom, is dated October 17, 1944. The note, simply addressed to "Ralph", simply relates that "This might be of interest", closing with "Regards" and signed "Bruce". Several annotations and initials, apparently from those who have read the note and attached commendation, are present on the note. The note is stapled along the top to the letter of commendation with punch holes along the top edges. Both the letter and the note are folded. There is a crease to the top right corner of the first page of the letter and staple holes as well as a small chip to the top right corner of the second page.<p>Wonderful historical material with superb content.<p>A career officer, General Bruce C. Clarke (1901-1988) served in the first and second World Wars as well as the Korean War. He Commanded the U.S. Army, Pacific from December 1954 to April 1956. He was commander of the Continental Army Command from 1958 through 1960 and subsequently served as Commander, U.S. Army Europe from 1960 through 1962. As a Colonel and subsequently Brigadier General in the Second World War, he commanded Combat Command A ("CCA") of the 4th Armored Division of General Patton's Third Army. In 1944, he led his troops to victory over superior German armored forces at the Battle of Arracourt. Later in December, he led the relief of St. Vith during the Battle of the Bulge, slowing the German attack. His actions were credited by General Eisenhower as the turning point in the battle. General Clarke commanded the I Corps and the X Corps during the Korean War and trained the First Republic of Korea's Army. He held several commands during peace time and, a Mason, he was awarded the third highest Masonic award, the Grand Cross of the Court of Honor by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite for the Southern Jurisdiction.

Housed in a custom red cloth folding case. A fine copy. First UK edition, limited issue. Number 78 from a limited edition of 100 copies only, the only British publication. Potter originally conceived the story "as a pendant to The Tailor of Gloucester &#150; the lonely old man and the lonely old woman, but I could never finish it." It was first written in 1909 under the title "The Little Black Kettle". Linder, p. 432; not in Quinby. [Attributes: First Edition]
