Official Admiralty Second World War photo of General Bernard Law Montgomery and Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser on the Flagship HMS Duke of York, signed and annotated by Montgomery as Commander in Chief of the British Group of Armies one month before the Normandy landings

H.M.S. Duke of York: British Admiralty Press Division, 1944. This striking Second World War photograph is remarkable for location, time, subject, and signature. General Bernard Law Montgomery and Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser are captured striding on the deck of the Flagship H.M.S. Duke of York on 6 May 1944, one month before the D-Day Normandy landings. In the background is one of the 14 inch guns that Fraser himself designed. Measuring 10 x 8 inches, the photograph is annotated and signed by Montgomery in black ink in seven lines. At the top center, Montgomery wrote: “Visit to Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser | C-in-C Home Fleet | 6 May 1944.” At the lower right, adjacent to and below his own feet, Montgomery signed and wrote “B. L. Montgomery | General. | C-in-C British Group of Armies.” A final line at the bottom center between Fraser and Montgomery reads: “H.M.S. Duke of York.” There are two British Admiralty stamps on the verso. At the upper right, stamped and bordered in purple ink, is “OFFICIAL ADMIRALTY PHOTOGRAPH | No.” and hand-inked in blue is “23232 Mas”. A second, five-line Admiralty stamp at the center reads: “Suitable for transmission | through the post not for, | publication | Press Division | Admiralty.” Pencil notation at the upper left reads: “MONTGOMERY, B. SPN9034”. Condition is excellent, with no loss, tears, apparent toning, or appreciable wear or soiling. Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976) passed through Sandhurst "without distinction" to begin what became fifty years in the British Army during which he became "the outstanding British field commander of the twentieth century.” The First World War “changed Montgomery from a bumptious, querulous infantry subaltern, constantly at odds with authority, into a decorated company commander, outstanding staff officer—and trainer of men.” Fame came in North Africa during the Second World War. In August 1942, Churchill gave Montgomery command of the Eighth Army. Montgomery famously beat Rommel and oversaw defeat of North African Axis forces. He went on to command the Eighth Army in Sicily and Italy, and Allied ground forces during Operation Overlord – launched with the Normandy landings of 6 June 1944. After the war he rose to Chief of the Imperial General Staff and was elevated to Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. He retired in 1958 as deputy commander of NATO's European forces. (ODNB) Admiral Bruce Austin Fraser, Baron Fraser of North Cape (1888-1981) was a career naval officer who saw First World War action in the Dardanelles. By the early 1920s he was “plainly marked for high rank” and worked “close to the heart of the navy's gunnery development”. As director of naval ordinance Fraser “devised the armament for Britain's last generation of battleships, the 14 inch King George V class” – to which class belonged the Duke of York. All five King George V class ships saw combat, two of them in the action that sank the Bismarck. Fraser began the Second World War as controller of the navy and third sea lord. “Fraser won the confidence of Winston Churchill… and never lost it for the remainder of the war, despite periodic differences of opinion.” On 8 May 1940 Fraser was appointed commander-in-chief, Home Fleet. In late December 1943, the guns of the Duke of York – in which Fraser flew his flag – were “the decisive factor” in sinking the German capital ship Scharnhorst, “ensuring Fraser's perpetual celebrity in the annals of the Royal Navy”. Fraser ended the war as commander-in-chief, Pacific Fleet, and signed the Japanese surrender document for Britain, aboard the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. A barony was conferred in 1946 and Fraser retired in April 1952. (ODNB) In addition to her considerable wartime action, in December 1941, H.M.S. Duke of York transported Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic to meet with President Roosevelt and address the U.S. Congress and Canadian Parliament. Duke of York was laid up in November 1951.

        ORIGINAL ART: COUNTRY COLIC

      - LAWSON,ROBERT. ORIGINAL ART: COUNTRY COLIC. Offered here is an original pen and ink drawing that appeared greatly reduced opposite the Contents page of Country Colic, published by Little Brown in 1944, both written and illustrated by Lawson. The caption (written on an overlay in Lawson's hand) reads: "When Adam delved and Eve span, Who was then the laundryman?" The image is 6" wide x 4" high on board that measures 8 x 10". Done with his characteristic detail there is a caterpillar walking across a clothes line where 2 leaves are hanging attached by clothes pins. Subtle humor, signed with initials on the right. SOLD WITH 2 HANDWRITTEN LETTERS from Lawson to a noted book collector named William Easton Louttit. In the first letter dated May 15 [1944], Lawson responds to Mr. Louttit's request for this drawing. It reads in full: "Dear Mr. Louttit: Thank you so much for your delightful letter of May 4th. I am so glad that you enjoyed Country Colic and would be very happy to tender the Adam and Eve drawing, but, as you perhaps know, getting original drawings back from the publisher is a rather long drawn out process. They are usually sent out for exhibition in book shops, libraries, etc. and used in various ways for publicity purposes. I will write Little Brown about this particular drawing, but fear it may be quite a long time before it is returned. With many thanks for your interest, I am Sincerely yours, Robert Lawson. Rabbit Hill May 15." It would appear that Lawson was successful in retrieving the drawing, because it accompanies this letter to Louttit. He must have been grateful to receive the drawing as can be seen in the next letter. Written on August 15th, the day after V-J Day when the Japanese surrendered in WWII (this is referred to in the letter): "Dear Mr. Louttit: May I thank you for your overgenerous liquid token, which arrived most opportunely yesterday afternoon, barely two hours before the glorious news was given us. Nothing could have been more timely nor more appreciated by myself, my family and neighbors. We all thank you most heartily and wish you the best of everything at this happy time to which you have added so considerably. Sincerely yours, Robert Lawson. Rabbit Hill Aug. 15th 1945."       Paris: Robert Godet, 1944. Contree. Robert Desnos, with one etching by Pablo Picasso. Robert Godet, Paris 1944. Limited edition of 213 numbered copies of which this copy is one of 200 in Lafuma pur fil paper. With one etching in frontispiece, loose as issued, with inverted signature and date Picasso 23.D.43. The etching depicts a seated figure in both sides, front and back, with millions of fine lines supporting the figure, the drawing acquires volume and intricacy, and questioning our sense of perception of the whole piece. The poems of the collection are highly militant, alluding to the occupation and imminent liberation; Desnos was arrested by Gestapo on February 1944, before the publication of the book, and died 15 months later. In very good condition.

        The Eye and the Finger

Arkham House, Sauk City 1944 - Sauk City, Arkham House, 1944. First Edition. First Impression. Association copy with manuscript material. Signature of Margery Lawrence to the front free endpaper. The manuscript material from Wandrei consists of five single-sided typed sheets comprising the introduction to the book, one single-sided typed sheet comprising the copyright page, one single-sided typed sheet comprising an early draft of the copyright page and a typed sheet outlining the pages needing correction. Numerous minor corrections in pencil by Wandrei. Margery Lawrence was also published by Arkham House (Mycroft & Moran) with the book 'Number Seven Queer Street' in 1959, it was first published in the UK by Hale in 1945. Given that this is one of the earlier Arkham's it does seem a nice association as it would've been one of the books from a publisher who would publish her work some fifteen years later. The dust jacket artwork is by the author's brother. The book itself is in very good condition with some bumping to the spine tips and a little rubbing to the lettering on the spine. The jacket has been reinforced internally with brown tape, and has a little wear, though not too bad given the age. The manuscript material is all in decent shape, with a little toning and a few short tears. Cover art by Howard Wandrei [5973, Hyraxia Books]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Theory of Games and Economic Behavior

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1944. First edition. Fine/Very Good +. A Fine copy of this monumental work in economic theory. Red cloth completely unfaded, appearing unmarked and unused. Retains the original "Corrigenda" slip. In the rare original red dust jacket. Jacket Very Good+ to Near Fine. Chipped at the top of the front and rear panels, a few short, closed tears, but on the whole an excellent example of the jacket (and completely untouched by any repairs). Due to the type of paper used, the jackets became extremely brittle and rarely survive intact (or are marred beyond recognition with restoration). One of the first, cohesive descriptions of "Game Theory," the branch of economics that finds equilibrium points among dynamic actors, with each actor pursuing an independent strategy. Game theory is one of the most important theoretical developments of the twentieth century, with several other disciplines finding applications of its method. Eight Nobel prizes have been awarded for advances and developments of the theory. "The impact of von Neumann's Theory of Games extends far beyond the boundaries of this subject. By his example and through his accomplishments, he opened a broad new channel of two-way communication between mathematics and the social sciences. These sciences were fortunate indeed that one of the most creative mathematicians of the twentieth century concerned himself with some of their fundamental problems and constructed strikingly imaginative and stimulating models with which to attack their problems quantitatively." (Kuhn & Tucker, 'John von Neumann's work in the theory of games and mathematical economics,' Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society 64 (1958), pp. 100-122). Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

Angry Penguins: 1944 Autumn Number to Commemorate the Australian Poet Ern Malley

Melbourne; The National Press Pty. Ltd. 1944.. First Edition; Demy 4to; pp. [iii], 109; several b/w. illustrations of artwork, original stiff illustrated wrappers, featured on the cover is a Sidney Nolan painting inspired by lines from Ern Malley's poem Petit Testament, original side-stapled, a few very minor tears to margins of a few pages, one marginal note in ink, otherwise an exceptionally fine copy. Erm Malley, is the central figure in Australia's greatest literary hoax, and this edition of Angry Penguins the most famous and sort after edition of any Australian magazine. The 16 poems printed in this edition, were created in one day in 1943 by conservative writers James McAuley, and Harold Stewart in order to hoax Max Harris, and his magazine. Imitating the modernist poetry of the time, which they despised, the hoaxes deliberately created what they thought was bad verse and submitted the poems to Angry Penguins. Harris and his followers fell for the hoax, and enraptured by the poetry, devoted the Autumn issue to Ern Malley. The hoax was revealed soon after, resulting in a cause celebre and the humiliation of Harris. The great irony is that the poems endured as successful examples of surrealist poetry in their own right, and have continued to inspire generations of artists, writers and imitators. To make matters worse , Harris was successfully prosecuted for publishing "indecent matter' as some of the poems were found to be caught under sections of the South Australian police Act. The rarity of this edition may be because the police impounded a large part of the run because of the obscenity trial.

        Switching Theories in Space Technology

First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by Aiken to fellow computer pioneer Ruth Davis on the front free endpaper, "To Ruth Davis with best regards from Howard Aiken" and also signed by William Main. Trained as a physicist, Howard Aiken was a computer pioneer who designed of IBM's Harvard Mark I to solve the differential equations used in physics research. Installed in 1944, it was first used to solve mathematical problems for the Manhattan Project and was programmed in part by Grace Hopper. The Mark I became the prototype for future supercomputers, including Aiken's follow-ups, Harvard Marks II-IV.Books inscribed by Aiken are rare, and this is an excellent association, as the recipient, Ruth Davis (1928-2012), was "a pioneer in satellites and computers" (The National Academies Press biography). She earned a PhD in mathematics in 1955, the first woman to do so at the University of Maryland, College Park. She then worked for the Navy, where she wrote some of the earliest computer code for Naval nuclear reactors and was a founder of the Navy's Command and Control Technology Organization. Davis served as director of the NBS Institute for Computer Sciences and Technology the HEW National Center for Biomedical Communication. "She rose to become deputy undersecretary of defense for research and advance technology" where she "created some of the earliest computer software for defense and space applications" (National Academies Press). Davis was an early proponent of encryption for non-military uses and initiated important projects on high speed integrated circuits, lasers and particle beams, the first satellite communications system for remote healthcare applications, the first computer network for medical literature, and early automation systems. The present volume is a collection of twenty-five papers on the use of logic circuits in space technology, and would have been of particular interest to Davis. Edited by Howard Aiken and William F. Main. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 1963. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Bookplate of Ruth M. Davis. A superb, fresh copy in the jacket that is lightly rubbed at the edges with a few short closed tears and a longer closed tear along the spine panel.

The complete First Edition set in three volumes; all with dustjackets; signed by Douglas Southall Freeman on the front endpaper. For his part, Eicher considers the set to be "brilliantly written volumes [which] deserve to be red by all Civil War students" [Eicher, 971]. A more than presentable First Edition set.
