Princeton: Princeton University Press; London: Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, 1944. Princeton: Princeton University Press; London: Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press,, 1944. A Fragment of Life. Translated by David F. Swenson and Lillian Marvin Swenson. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spines gilt. With the dust jackets. A few tiny white specks to boards. An excellent set in lightly tanned jackets with very minor chipping and one small faint green mark to rear panel of Vol. II. A particularly fresh set in excellent condition. First edition in English, first impression. Søren Kierkegaard wrote Either/Or in his late twenties, "under a variety of pseudonyms (all recognizable), the chief advantage of this method seems to have been to give Kierkegaard the opportunity of letting different sides of his mind converse as individuals with each other, in a semi-Socratic fashion. Without disclosing his real beliefs, he confronted his readers with a choice of different possibilities [...]. Choice, as the title of his work suggests, was at the root of Kierkegaard's theory. There can be no system of existence, only a system of ideas. From this he develops his theory of 'Existence' (since taken up by the modern Existentialists), in which human beings considered as subjects not objects are the only real existence: their reflective as opposed to active nature being focused on the 'acts' of making perpetual decisions" (PMM). Originally published in Denmark in 1843, a centenary before its first English translation, under the title Enten-Eller. With the original publisher's invoice laid in.

        The Road to Serfdom

Chicago: University of Chicago, 1944.. Chicago: University of Chicago, 1944. First edition, sixth printing published a few months after the first. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly inscribed by the author, "To Max Palin, Jr. from F.A. Hayek" on the front free endpaper. In near fine condition, the front flap of the dust jacket has been glued to the inner gutter. Hayek has written one of the most important books of our generation. It restates for our time the issue between liberty and authority with the power and rigor of reasoning that John Stuart Mill stated …in his great essay, 'On Liberty'" (Hazlitt, 82). [I]n my opinion it is a grand book. . . . Morally and philosophically I find myself in agreement with virtually the whole of it: and not only in agreement with it, but in deeply moved agreement" (John Maynard Keynes). The Road To Serfdom placed fourth on the list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century by National Review magazine.

Deadline" by Cleve Cartmill in Astounding Science Fiction: March 1944

Street & Smith Pub. Inc, 1944-03-01. Street & Smith Pub. Inc, 1944-03-01. Paperback. Good. FIRST EDITION. New York: Street & Smith Publications, 1944. Vol. XXXII, No. 1. 178 pages. Wraps. Good condition. Clean pages, toned with age. Wear at extremities (especially at foot and bottom corner). Table of contents page torn, missing top fifth or so of page. Tear in pg. 35. Wear spot on back cover. Good condition overall. The extremely rare issue of the magazine Astounding Science Fiction that contained the story "Deadline" by Cleve Cartmill. Although set on another planet, it apparently describes isotope separation and a weapon similar to the (then) top-secret atomic bomb, causing an uproar within the highest levels of the American government. Military Intelligence enlisted Cartmill's mailman as a confidential informant. The FBI investigated the author as well, commanding him to not write about such matters, and the magazine's editor (John Campbell) and other authors connected to the magazine such as Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. Rumor has it that many copies of the magazine were bought up by the government and destroyed to preserve the intense secrecy of the Manhattan Project. Whether or not that rumor is true, today it is quite scarce.

International Monetary Fund and International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Washington, U. S. Treasury, 1944. 8vo. Bound with the original wrappers in later half cloth. White library numbering to top left corner of front boards and front wrapper. "Withdrawn" stamp to front wrapper. Soiling to top right corner of front wrapper affecting first 20 leaves. Front wrapper creased. X, 88 pp.. First announcement of the establishment of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at Bretton Woods in July 1944 - the greatest, most powerful and successful international economic agreement ever made. 44 Allied nations led by The United States and Great Britain sought to rebuild the international economic system while World War II was still going on. The Bretton Woods system obligated each country to adopt a monetary policy that maintained the exchange rate by tying its currency to the U.S. dollar and the ability of the IMF to bridge temporary imbalances of paymentsThe formation of the Bretton Woods system is by many considered the main factor in the economic prosperity experienced in Western Europe and the USA during the 50ies and 60ies thus shaping the world economy for decades. Regardless of the fact that some of the basic traits of the system (the gold standard) was abandoned in 1971 - usually referred to as the Nixon Shock - it is still the most influential economic event in the post war-years, if not the entire 20th century. "The United States and Great Britain took the lead in constructing the postwar international monetary institutions, with John Maynard Keynes and Harry Dexter White drawing up rival designs for the new system. The Charter of the International Monetary Fund provided for a system based on pegged, but adjustable, exchange rates and an institution which would lend additional reserve assets to countries which were having temporary difficulties in maintaining convertibility. Resort to floating exchange rates, competitive devaluations, and trade restirctions to promote domestic employment were explicitly to be avoided, in the light of the problems of the 1930s"

Clarence Nixon, Ethel Moore, Mildred Haun, and Marion Junkin.

The Fugitive poets, also referred to as the Southern Agrarians, was a small group of critics and poets [including both faculty and students such as John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, among others] that came together at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee to publish “The Fugitive,” a literary magazine of poetry and criticism. They were practitioners and defenders of formal techniques in poetry and were preoccupied with promoting the traditional southern values and an agrarian way of life as an alternative to the course of the modern, industrial life they saw developing in the North. Although its published life was brief [from 1922 until 1925], “The Fugitive” is considered to be one of the most influential publications in the history of American literature. The group of writers, poets, and critics continued to publish material [both separately and collaboratively] well into the mid-twentieth century.
